  • Opened at the Victuals in Hong Kong. P&P and enjoyed a small glass.

This was very generously shared by our host that evening, and it was a wonderful CSH. Very fresh but aromatically expressive with lots of fruit, complimented by precise acidity that cut through everything. Great texture on the palate.

This echoes my experiences with the better German GGs (Keller, etc.) that the 2011s are in their prime at the moment. Give it some air and make sure it's at the right temperature and boy you're in for a treat.

Very happy to have tried, and would absolutely revisit soon!

  • Chez JPL: Stony elements, good density and length, but a bit round and missing tension of the best CSH vintages.

  • From magnum. Petrol notes and delicate fruits. Very light and easy to drink. Will age well but lovely right now.

  • My first Clos Ste Hune. My expectations were through the roof. I worried that I was opening it too early at 11 yrs old, but I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer. The bottle isn’t premoxed, but it’s more advanced than it should be. Bottle looked good, but removing the capsule revealed a cork that was sunk 2mm below the rim. I tasted a small bit PnP and the rest of it went into the decanter which we drank slowly over 5 hrs. Some weird funky notes upon opening, which went away after some air.

Aroma is mostly pleasant, but it’s not at the intensity that a top quality Riesling should be- I’d say medium minus. Notes are of a wine that is advancing in years: stewed pears, apple sauce, wilted wildflowers, honey, lemon meringue pie, chamomile tea, and jasmine. Not a hint of petrol. The smells are pleasant but, again, intensity is lacking, and too advanced for a wine with a reputation of being able to age forever.

Pleasant in the mouth, but lacking the high acidity it should have. Even a touch flabby. The texture is soft, smooth, very easy drinking. Tastes of poached pears, pineapple rings out of the can, chamomile and jasmine (again). There is a hint of Juicy Fruit gum note that feels out of place. Finish is reasonably long, emphasizes the fruit.

I haven’t had this wine before, but I’ve had Cuvee Frederic Emile on multiple occasions, as well as other high quality Alsatian Rieslings. This wine is pleasant enough to drink, but no way this is what it’s supposed to be. Strangely, it’s missing the je ne sais quoi typicity of Riesling. Here I am, drinking what is supposed to be one of the top expressions of Riesling in the world, and I’m not sure I could have even identified the grape if blinded. Fun to try, but given the price, a bit fat disappointment.

I've had the bottle for 3 years, stored perfectly. I suspect damage in transit.

  • Chez JPL: A nice elegant Riesling, a bit peppery, middle density and length. Not part of the best vintages of CSH.

  • Medium gold. Quite viscous. Enchanting nose of blossom, lime zest, peach, apple, with light TDN/petrol. Weighty mouthfeel but has enough acidity to dance across the palate. The fruit is very ripe though I do not detect much residual sugar. Impressive persistence and complexity. This is a gorgeous wine that has improved compared to the last bottle I had in 2017. Drink now and over the next 10-15 years. Outstanding.

  • Nose: The nose is deep and refined as it fills the glass with apples, pears, warm oils, yellow flowers, crushed rocks, saline, chamomile, Meyer lemons, and jasmine.

Taste: The feel is Full bodied with razor-sharp, high acidity. The acidity cuts beautifully and with intent, but it doesn’t overwhelm. The feel has so much texture and balance with apples, pears, meyer lemons, warm oils, crushed rocks, saline, chamomile, and jasmine.

Overall: This is entering its zone and it’s flat out gorgeous. There is plenty of time left as it’s really entering an upslope, but it was signing after seeing a few hours in the decanter and air at dinner.

  • 10 years after Riesling tasting - 2011 (Restaurant Waldhorn, Kirchheim, Germany): Glass: Sophienwald Universal
Bottle double decanted about 7h before the tasting. Bought at release, perfectly stored.
Clear, pale golden color. Nose driven by lots of stony mineral and some petrol. Very dense. On the palate very precise and quite lean. Wonderful acidity. Salty, some caraway seeds, ripe fruit. Great tension and extract. This is a sleeping monster at its very early stage and made for the very long run. Keep it for at least another decade. 93-94++

  • Beautiful mix of intense honied stone fruit, minerality/clay/chalk. Wow. A bit of heat and alcohol does show through, but overall it's a beauty!

  • Single bottle from a large mixed lot purchased at auction in London in 2020. Clos Ste. Hune is a 1.67 hectare monopole in the Grand Cru Rosacker in Hunawihr, which yields approximately 8,000 bottles per year. Fermented and aged in 100% stainless steel, non-malo, residual sugar 6.6 gr/l, 14% ABV. Like in Germany, 2011 was a warm year in Alsace, and it shows on the mature nose, which is quite petrolly and does not have a lot of definition, but there is some refreshing citrus fruit next to the smoke and earth. The palate is quite full and displays lots of extract, but its stony character is much more driven by the soil (ceratite-limestone, what the Germans call "Muschelkalk") than by the fruit. The finish has lots of tight, zesty, acidity but also noticeable back-end heat. I rarely drink Clos Ste. Hune and I am glad that I got this bottle for a bargain-basement price, because I would be wary of paying the normal price of admission (currently € 150 - €170 per bottle). Very good rather than great.

  • A 1.67ha vineyard in the heart of Grand Cru Rosacker. Avg. yield: 50hl/ha. 100% stainless steel and no MLF. 6.6g of residual sugar. Primary green apples, petrol and intense minerals. Medium bodied with very sharp acidity. Rather lean and doesn’t have the intensity compared to the stunning 2009 Keller Abts Erde. (89/100)

  • Very enjoyable wine and really went perfectly with some Japanese dishes. It's fresh and lively and dry and drinking excellently even if young.

  • This is so dry and firm, hat I was guessing German Riesling, GG from outside of Mosel. But of course it was a grand Alsace-wine, one the greatest, quite forward today, hints of petrol, great minerality, citrus fruit, layer upon layer.

  • Balance and vibrancy. Some beautiful petroleum notes on the nose and fresh acidity. Wonderful wine!

  • Just stunning. Based on some previous comments about low acidity, we chose a food pairing accordingly. On the nose, peach, orchard fruits, a suggestion of petrol, blending into honey. On the palate, quite rich for a riesling, and I could see why some ppl found this low acid, but I think the acidity keeps the soft sweetness in check. Long finish, lovely mouthfeel. Tasted next to an 09 Donhoff Dellchen GG, which made the slight off-dry character of this wine apparent, but also had a 76 Licht-Bergweiler Spat nearby, so it was clear the sweetness was much more restrained.

  • Smells and tastes off dry. Some honey both aromatics and palate. It’s ripe and delicious but perhaps would have preferred more cut.

  • The cork demons had struck. Nose is full of wet dog, hessian sacks and a dirty-ness. Palate is sweet / sour, bitter on the finish. Not great, but not a representative bottle I feel. 14/20

  • Crystalline purity, great length, bone dry with substantial dry extract. This was like a great Chevalier Montrachet, whereas the 09 Frederich Emile was like a great Batard.

  • Terroir-istes International - France, Alsace Riesling Grand Cru (Cape Town Law offices): (Tasted Blind): Mid- yellow in colour. Lifted, lemon cleaner note with a dry dishcloth, fresh linen quality. Certainly floral there is chamomile, mineral and lemons that slowly emerge.
The palate is all floral intensity offering decent fruit concentration, with a bit of that lemon cleaner note coming through. Tight with razor-sharp acidity, dry as a bone that suggests it will ease with some time in bottle. It has a rather abrupt finish that detracts but again, time may heal.
A wine known for its dry profile and mineral saline austerity. Vineyards 50-70 yrs old."

  • Medelintensiv gul färg. Fruktig doft med inslag av citrus, päron, mineral och petroleum. Frisk syra. Medelfylligt. Smak av citrus. Välbalanserat med lång eftersmak.

  • Trimbach etc. at S.K.Y. (Chicago, IL): A great showing of this wine. I've consistently loved Hune, and this bottle is no exception. There's a slight bit of sweetness (more so than I remember than the last time I had it), but it doesn't seem to add to the weight of this wine. Despite the power and expressiveness here, there is incredible cut and precision here. It's linear and focussed, like one of those green lasers. It's clear, having this next to so many other Trimbach on the table, why this is the pinnacle of their stable.

  • By the glass, €25 at the Restaurant Hotel du Mouton in Ribeauvillé, Alsace.

Multi-layered nose of pear, white nectarine, shot through with minerality, and a tinge of kerosene, pure. Mid-bodied, pure pear and white nectarine on the palate, balanced acidity, slightly slick texture, great length.

Tried the 2012 at the Trimbach cellar door after (a somewhat rushed and generic affair), and the 2012’s acidity is a lot more pronounced in comparison, and is a lot more foursquare. The 2011 (I believe of a warmer vintage) will be ready earlier.

  • Very distinctive in style and very different from Trimbach Schlossberg 2014 tasted at the same time. This Clos Ste.Hune is all about the terroir and less about Riesling. It is rounder, less acid and has a lot more fat than the Schlossberg. Green lemons and notes of petrol on the nose/palate. Medium+ finish. I guess this should be cellared until 2021.

  • No proper notes. Honey, whiff of petrol, white fruits, so much stony minerality. Very nice.

  • Light yellow wine. Super mineral. Pleasant aroma of white fruits and honey. Taste even better with notes of butter, pear, pineapple. Good acidity. Better in the mouth than in the nose. Médium finish. Ready to drink. 93+

  • Agree with the previous note - there is just piles of fruit here and almost a honeysuckle like quality that makes you want to double-check that it is indeed a dry style. Generally well done although I felt like the acidity was missing a bit (could be because most of what we were drinking was champagne and so this came across as more flat than it otherwise would have). Overall liked ok but I do find myself preferring some other in the Alsace region.

  • 2017 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/9/2017-11/14/2017 (Villa D’este, Lake Como and Milan): A hint of petrol, opulent yet fresh white fruit, pear, granny smith, white peach, white flowers, honey and mineral. Very good concentration, good acidity, incredibly mineral and a long pear and mineral driven finish. It starts with a hint of sweetness but the finish is dry. Drinking beautifully already but will improve for at least a couple of decades.

  • Anne Trimbach at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): Another gem from Trimbach. The nose shows delicate sweet fruit, as well as a slight bit of flinty minerality. The palate has a fair bit of fruit, giving this the impression of sweetness even though there really probably isn't any RS. Concentrated and rich, but light on its feet all the same. Dry riesling at its finest.

  • Very fresh. Great acidity. Needs more time but already with the characteristic ‘petrol’ taste.

  • First taste of Clos Ste Hune; reminds me of a certain Finger Lakes Riesling...
Nice underlying acidity, firm fairly unyielding aromas, phenolic structure. I expect it to develop a little more aromatic richness with time. would drink again, but not likely to purchase at current prices...

  • Tasting at Trimbach (Ribeauvillé, France): Medium yellow. Restrained nose. Medium weight for this bottling and clearly lighter than the '08 Frederic Emile. Candied citrus, tons of soil, good but not extraordinary acidity. Fine finish and moderate length, but I'm not convinced this will wind up being a great CSH. This bottle had been opened 2 days earlier.

  • A visit to Maison Trimbach; 3/10/2017-3/11/2017 (Alsace, France): A wow wine for me. More importantly my wife insisted we buy a bottle (and its not inexpensive)! Green gold in color. The nose is very clean with minerals, slight apricot and that same herbal note that runs thru these Rieslings. On the palate, chalk, yellow grapefruit and minerals. Long finish. There is some warmth on the finish but it is not hot and I liked it. This is still young of course for this wine and I would give it a few years more to develop. Certainly one of the great Rieslings in the wine world.

  • Parcela de 1,67 has y suelo argilo-calcáreo.
