Garnet with fading. Marvelous perfume with strawberry, herb, and a bit of gaminess. Not a big wine at all, but subtle, refined, and exceedingly complex. Red berry and cranberry, soil base, a touch of pepperiness, great acidity, and light remaining tannins. Whereas the 1990 was a mean, charmless wine, this is a magnificent, rather delicate mature Burgundy that should last well for another decade. These Vogüé wines need time-a lot of it.

Shared with Xavier94: liquid concentrate of violets and lavender on the nose; deep black cherry, sage and menthol notes; thick and viscous, turns savory with an hour in the glass; typically overwrought Vogue, no subtlety here. Predictably more cerebral and contemplative than truly enjoyable. Drink now or through the next couple centuries.

Holy cow, guessed this to be closer to 1999 than a ‘91!! As you would expect, this is notably unevolved but unlike the 1988 de Vogue, this shows more of a coated structure of black cherry/licorice/sage/menthol alliance that is less austere than other Vogue vintages under the Millet regime. Big, bold and spicy with smoked lavender scents over the hallmark dark fruit. Shows some dried herb, secondary development. But absolutely no undergrowth/sous bois hints yet. If you open a bottle, be prepared to spend some time with this, as this wines open out slowly over an afternoon-evening. Thank you, Joe. 94+.

I was a little apprehensive bc this was purchased at auction and thought it could be past its prime. I got lucky this time.
On the nose: at first, lots of funk and diaper as noted below. But this blew off after about 30 mins and was replaced by raspberry, liquorice, and a hint of thyme…then about an hour later came Christmas spices…clove and cinnamon, then finally sous bois + black pepper notes. Extremely fragrant! About 2 hours after opening it all came together.
Palate: medium + acidity and relatively firm tannins for a 30+ year Musigny. Dare I say, I think this could go a few more years if stored well! Lots of red fruit with a velvety, long finish. Superb!

Excellent bottle, ideal fill, condition and color.
Drank at event, one full pour drank over an hour. Bottle was opened a while before serving. Drank alongside 1990 La Tache.
Charming yet deep aromas of dried, dark flowers, Gunpowder, aged oolong and macerated cranberry.
Fine tannins on the palate. Iron and mineral spine with a breadth which was better than I would expect for a vogue. Excellent finish - very different from the LT.

Dirty diaper and VA nose, this was a very poor showing. Some nice black cherry fruit if you focused hard and tried to ignore the awful nose. I'm guessing this bottle wasn't the best provenance, what a shame.

Medium ruby center with fading only at the extreme rim. After being open but not decanted for an hour, some stemmy tones, a bit of game, black licorice, and blackberry on the nose. By the second pour, though, some spice burst forth and the fruit seemed redder. Medium weight, great acidity, beautiful sap, and a consistent vein of fine soil. Still a good dose of tannin and a squirt of citrus peel. This sweetened and grew softer over several hours as the acidity folded in. Outstanding if not sublime, and we felt very lucky to have such a positive experience with a wine that has been so variable for others. Bottles of this quality could easily see out another decade.

From magnum. The best experience with this wine in quite some time. Good nose with balanced fruit, spice and floral elements. Earth and tar emerge on the palate to complement the dark fruit and spice. Finish is disappointingly short and the wine recedes to quickly (in this case after approximately one hour after opening). 93-

Bricking, fine deposit. Mushroom, cellar, graphite, licquorice. Ripe red fruit on the palate, powerful tertiary flavours mix with fruit that somehow manages to be fully mature and crisp at the same time. Long, balanced, with fierce acidity still present. As with all de Vogue wines, very powerful and uncompromising, positively begging for some haute cuisine to stand up to it. Drink now

Tasted as a reference wine at Swedish Importer Tryffelsvinets yearly Bonneau du Martry & Comte Georges de Vogûé 2013 vintage event, with Jean Luc from Vogüé hosting. From half bottle: Nose shows lots of maturity, and is very, very intriguing and complex. A very quiet and reflective wine. It has a wonderful message to deliver but you need to concentrate to hear it. Starts off very refined on the nose with subtle red fruits and hints of old leather books but floral notes appear with time. On the palate it is very delicate but is incredibly refined and elegant. Not a knock you over the head WOW wine, but a wonderful haunting experience.

A wine to celebrate the (close) end of bachelor-hood, contributed extremely generously by SS. The colour was dark red, almost opaque. The nose was absolutely intense. This did not seem like an elegant, floral chambolle. It was ripe, intense, powerful, right in your face (in a good way), this seemed extremely Vosne, like a Noellat Richebourg. There was spice and lots of heat and alchohol on the nose. On the palate, the structure was tremendous. Again, not an elegant wine, but just extremely powerful and dense. Dark berries, ripe intense fruit, some minerals but lots of spice and pepper. It was a hot wine. This is a great contrast to the 1990 I drank sometime back. This was the better wine, with more balance and depth. What a wine!

Imponerende ungdommelig. Spiss, saftig syre. Strukturert med milde, men faste tanniner. Spicy utgang. Super lengde. Flott levert fra en meget ujevn årgang

Library release from magnum. Opened 9 hours before serving, but not decanted. Much like the magnum tasted at the Vogue dinner last May. Lots of dark fruit and power, with delicate floral and spice. Lots of mineral backbone with great density and concentration. A very long finish. I really look forward to seeing how these magnums develop over the years. Based on the power and structure of this magnum, I really don't plan on opening any of mine for at least a decade. Hopefully by then it will show more of the "Musigny elegance" I look for.

Great Wine Dinner with Friends and Wagyu (Western Chicago IL Suburbs): Another of the library release magnums. Very similar to the magnum opened last year at Knightsbridge's Vogue dinner, only this time it got much less air before serving. Dark, dense and chewy, somewhat backward, showing flashes of brilliance. I've experienced this to be a highly variable wine, but all magnums have been great, but bottles that came to the US through normal distribution highly variable.

Comte de Vogue Dinner with Jean-Luc Pepin (Les Nomades, Chicago IL): Domaine Library Release. From Magnum that had been open about 4 hours or so. Wow. So much more structure and power than the 750ml tasted earlier in the evening. Black cherry and berry with crushed stones and a savory herb note. The same fruit on the firm palate. Huge mineral backbones to the wine with great acidity. Incredibly fresh and young! What more could you want from a magnum with this perfect provenance. I plan on saving my magnum from this same case for at least a decade before opening.

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Dinner with Jean-Luc Pepin (Les Nomades - Chicago IL): From magnum, recent Domaine library release. Open and decanted 4 hours before serving. Black fruit aromas with a meaty character that (to me) was more reminiscent of a great Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru, but the palate was more classically restrained, nuanced and mineral-driven. Still very firm tannins, this still requires lots of patience. A wine with lots of bottle variation. Interestingly, this is my second best experience ever with Vogüé 1991 Musigny...the other being also from magnum, with the bottle having moved but once in its existence - from Vogüé to Becky Wasserman's house, where we greatly enjoyed it two years ago!

Ruby red with slight bricking. Expressive and classic Vogue Musigny nose with macerated red cherries, raspberries and fresh cut flowers on the nose, over time hints of hoisin sauce and meaty aromas emerge. A super sliky palate follows through with perfectly integrated sweet-tart red berries, minerals, asian spices and lovely perfume on the long peacock tail finish.

Tasted in vertical Vogue Moose tasting. Similar spice notes on the nose. Some seconday developing. Concentrated and nice structure/depth. Love the texture. Nice lift on the back end. Nice peacock's tail finish. This wine will not develop in the long term like the 93, but should be very enjoyable with a few more years onit.

This wine had very nice stony fruit and black cherry with fine perfume, excellent balance and poise, with a mix of savory , fruit and spice that worked well. There was hint of almost caramel-torrefaction stuff going on that I think detracted form an otherwise strong wine. Good clarity and focus here, drinking at or near peak, and while not my favorite, it was outstanding stuff. 91 pts

Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) (Palm Beach Gardens FL): I have had very incosnsitent experience with this wine, and htis was probably one of its less interesting showing. It came across very tired on the nose, even if classically Burgundy and Musigny. Palate was mostly earthy with some lingering black fruit. Lots of character, but I would have guessed older than 20 years if served blind.

Slow-ox for 4 hours, then decanted immediately prior to serving. Dark with some bricking. Not as much structure as the 90 and not nearly as ripe. On the nose, there are certainly similarities in both wines…a reductive quality? …perhaps barrel char? This however, really changed as the wine developed over the course of the next two hours. There was subtle elements of the 'reduction' that persisted, but then the sous bois, smoke, dark fruit aromas started to develop into a beautiful melange of smells that was captivating to me. On the palate, the wine had great depth and length. Silky….a true 'iron fist in a velvet glove'. The balance was beautiful with soft tannins, good acid and a wonderful sweet finish. The wine just kept gettting better and better imo over a 2 hour time frame. No hurry to drink the next bottle. I definitely prefer this wine to the 90. And oh yeah….it went perfect with the bacon wrapped meatloaf with homemade glaze, parmesan potatoes gratin and grilled corn off the cob in butter, lime, chive and manchego!

Vogue Musigny Dinner at Charlie Trotter's (Chicago, IL): Served single blind in a flight of Vogue 1986-91 Musigny. Nice balance of fruit and secondary character on the nose and palate. Moderate spice, reasonably good length due to very well integrated tannins and good acidity. Probably the best 750 I recall having, but not quite as good as a magnum at dinner in Burgundy last month. Probably not going to get much better in this format, based on this showing.

Wine with Meals in Burgundy; 9/8/2010-9/15/2010 (Burgundy): From a magnum that has probably moved once - from Vogue in 1993 or 1994 to the cellar in Burgundy from which we drank it tonight. By far the best this wine has tasted in the 3 or 4 times I've had it over the past few years. Mostly primary with elegant spice and some emerging secondary character, but this came across as bright, fresh and energetic, which has not really but the case for the other bottles, even though they were quite good.

Very consistent with a couple of other times I've tried this wine the past few years. Drinking nicely right now, probably not going to improve, so don't cellar much longer.

Second bottle same as the first. Not corked but void of fruit and mouth feel. There's also a weirdness in this wine. Not really bad but not up to the hype and price.

Comte de Vogue Dinner with Jean-Luc Pepin (Les Nomades, Chicago IL): Domaine Library Release. From 750ml that had been open for about 8 hours. Showing very mature on the nose. Dried darker red fruit and rose petals with a bit of damp earth and leaves. Nice texture on the palate, but lacking structure. Low acidity with a somewhat simple finish.

91 pts

Friday after Thanksgiving (Palm Beach, FL): More refined red fruits, with a somewhat aggressive and sharp finish that may show some damage. Enjoyable, but not at the level of previous bottles. A bit disjointed, but certainly not bad.

Earthy red and black cherry and plum on the nose with a touch of orange. Medium bodied palate and although it has a touch of grip remaining on the finish, I really don't see this getting much better, although it will certainly continue to hold.

Agree with Badass on this one, not that much to show for, very earthy but lacking fruit, while this wine was not pre-oxidized the nose was very un appealing. Got better with time, but I 'm being generous with the score.

Burgundy Dinner: Pre-Paulee with Zachys (Quince - San Francisco CA): Nice combination of fruit and mushrooms, with sous bois a bit dominant over the fruit on the nose. Very nice fruit on the palate that seems to take back control from the emerging earthy flavors. Really good spice.

Everyone at the table had the same opinion. Had the 1991 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche a year ago and it blew this one out of the water.

The Brothers Hersh tempt me with Burgundy... (Seattle, WA): This smells like young Burgundy with piercing cherry notes, perfumed and slightly flowery, very fresh smelling. With time in the glass some char and meatiness sneaks out. The palate reminds me of tea, very powerful yet largely monolithic and still undeveloped, very grippy.
