I didn't have the time or inclination to take formal notes this time around but nearly 2 years after my last tasting, this is still holding up beautifully and should continue to do so for the foreseeable future. It went fantastically with our morel fondue.

Grand Jury du Vin - Republic of Georgia; 11/1/2023-11/9/2023 (Republic of Georgia then stopover in Paris and Dijon): En Jeroboam. Perfectly mature yet youthful nose displaying generous decadent yellow fruit, baked apple, clementine, a hint of peach, brioche, light caramel, honey and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of decadent yellow fruit, still showing generous fine mousse, rich, warm and generous, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral, and a seamless long sweet yellow fruit driven finish with honey and brioche at the end. This is showing so incredibly well in this format.

Retail ~$300. 61% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay. I was cleaning out my father's house and I discovered this bottle. It took me a while, but I eventually realized that I had actually given this to him over 20 years prior. The box was still in good shape (although covered in a thick layer of dust) and the bottle was even better with great ullage and no signs of damage. So I took it home. Today, on the day that he died, I decided to open this beauty since I like to think that he was saving it to share with me some day (it is entirely more likely that he had completely forgotten about it). It opened with first a slight sigh (good sign) and then a broken cork (a pain in the you-know-what). Beyond golden and well into amber with a faint, but clearly present sparkle, this is old champagne at its best. Rich, sherried nose with some candied orange peel, caramel, and that rich, almost unctuous yeastiness that makes those of us who collect it, crave older champagne. Incredible. On the palate, the sparkle is faint but certainly there, determined to hang on until the last glass. Intense tartness, loads of caramel, and yes, that incredibly rich croissant-like intense flavor that makes my hair stand on end (in a good way). Look, I am not going to pretend that my father and I had a good relationship, or even a relationship at all, but this was an awfully beautiful way to say goodbye.
The mouth is ample, with a big attack thanks to a powerful material. One thing is certain: there is grape juice! Nice balance with just a little lack of tension to quibble, although the freshness is not left out since there is no feeling of heaviness. A readable, ultra-drinkable, pleasant wine, the kind that finishes in 10 minutes at 4. Structure without fuss but effective, with a very nice finish on the hazelnut which explodes all in length.
Excellent

From Jeroboam. Refined delicate mousse. A complex and delicate wine at the same time, a wine with fraicheur, fruit, toast. and length. A real highlight in the world of champagne.

A very special birthday dinner (Amsterdam): A jeroboam in pristine condtion; a superfresh flowery bouquet with a superb citrus backbone. The dosage (appr. 8 gr) is perfectly integrated with the firm, but very refined body; the aftertaste is superbly balanced and persistent. The volume of the jeroboam guarantees a long future.

Golden color with sparse, tiny bubbles. Sweet oranges on the nose and and intense lime dominates the mineral wine. Lime calcium finish goes on forever.

Still some life left in this one. Small fine bubbles, interesting notes of butterscotch och brioche. A very good "Grand Dame" while a step behind the excellent 96 in my book. If i had anyh bottles left i would not keep them longer then 2 years. 94 P

Side by side with the '93 and this was the clear winner although I doubt that surprises too many ppl given the difference in years. I remember these mostly coming across as still very young and light and that fresh and almost apple note vs. brioche of champagne but this is starting to get some more heft to it and maybe a bit more toast in style. Nice to see the evolution over time and lovely wine regardless.

Excellent condition - cork firm, moderately tight extraction. Has age on it - v. sl. browning. Great flavours, better after opened for 20 minutes. Long finish. 30 degrees C day; wine warmed in the glass too fast. Good quality smooth deep classic Champagne. Wish i had more....

Definitely way past its prime. I was hoping there would be something left, but there wasn't anything to be happy about. Nonetheless i drank it all. So obviously it wasn't horrible, but certainly way past expiration date.

Bottle was still in excellent condition. It’s been properly cellared since purchase. Enjoyed with the missus and her sister on New Years Eve with her sister’s wonderful pound cake topped with raspberries and whipped cream and her dark fudge. Could not improve on that pairing, no matter how hard I might try.

Nutty, toasty and surprisingly still in excellent shape in spite of its age. This bottle was clearly coddled and well looked after ever since its release. It went spectacularly with homemade flammkuchen.

not blind In good condition, at his peak, maybe just slightly over it. This time no mint chocolate which os often characteristic for GD. Just a hint to dried fruits, still bubbles and acidity. Some vanilla and honey. Balanced. 93-94

In my cellar since release. Lightly effervescent, slightly oxidized, but it actually blew off by about 50% rather quickly. Initially the nose and palate were all green apple and cashew nut, but with air there was more pear and a light yeastiness and some tart citrus, grapefruit pith and baked apples. Nice mouth feel and length on the finish. Probably a bit past its peak. Better with 45 minutes in the decanter actually. Quite complex and interesting with good depth.

Beautiful honeyed straw hue. Ultra fine bubbles remain. Aromas of ripe apple, toasted almond, baked bread, and honey. Still effervescent, alive and bright. Quite enjoyable now and hard to say if it will improve. It’s hanging on nicely thought it has likely lost some fruit and intesnity at this point. Drink now.

I'm really happy this was still holding strong. Surprisingly youthful for 30 years, but with plenty of great development and only hints of oxidation. I don't anticipate this holding on for too much longer, so drink up and enjoy its glory while you can.

Found this just a few weeks before my birthday, what a coincidence.
After some spoiled old prestige cuvees I was extremely pleased when the cork came off with a good sploosh.
Pristine condition, color like ripe yellow mango.
Hit this with the biggest burgundy glass I had. At first pretty shy. Some minerals on the bouquet but no fruits yet. Same went for the taste rather flat but rich acidity.
After 4-6 hours oh my god, this started to become very good. Mixed fruit compote, intense pear and mandarine and cherry notes fighting to push through. The body was still a bit flat especially in the middle but the acidity is pleasantly zesty.
After another 24 hours the bouquet didnt evolve anymore but the wine itself finally came through.
Beautiful fruit sweetness at first followed by a very rich anejo tequila flavour which effortlessly mingled with the acidity.
Incredible how a 30 year old champagne can be so fresh. And it would surely go 5-10 years (if in this condition).
Is it worth the price... this one is difficult. I think there might be similar result with many cheaper grower bottles.

courtesy of Dr. Dale to have a champagne this old nose - sherry, butterscotch mouth - regal. gran marnier, orange peel, sherry, and still with great acidity and nice bubbles. All in balance 30 years later. Can still go on, but why wait?
Disgorged in 2003 around 65% Pinot Noir Deep gold colour with some green Bruised apple nose, distinct smell of cobnuts. Yeasty meaty notes. Very fine bubbles. Apple pie rich, touch of cider here (not as a fault, I could just taste it), creamy and full. very very long. Gorgeous.

Birth year wine for me and it was drinking wonderfully. As good as aged champagne gets. loquat, almond, and brioche on the nose. Medium acid and honeysuckle. At least 3-5 years left, but perfect now.

NR. Tasted against the 2008. This particular bottle was tired and frankly, over the hill. Flat, with fallen out fruit. It's linear consistent with the house style, but I have yet to be even close to wowed by VC or its tete de cuvee.

Charleston V - the wooden anniversary; 11/6/2019-11/10/2019 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): By far the winner of the champagne event for me. This was in a perfect spot. Vanilla bean and tart and caramel and maybe a bit of nuttiness. Just drinking in that perfect spot where it still comes across as fresh and vibrant but there's a much broader spectrum of flavors and it's getting a bit more secondary.

Light amber, still plenty of tiny bubbles. Bq w yellow apples, overripe apples, tones of burnt caramel, roasted nuts, touch of orange marmalade. Full body w pleasant acidity, fruit mainly apples. Long aftertaste. Drank from 750 ml. Probably a couple of years past its peak (but still very enjoyable).

A few favourites with coq au vin (Chicago, IL): The great thing about champagne magnums is that the wines seem to age better in them. The bad thing is that when they're corked, you lose twice as much wine.

From magnum. This was drinking very well. Creamy mouthfeel with soft and fine bubbles. There is also a nice acidic spine that adds some bounce to the creamy profile. Drink now and for another 10 years but I don't see this getting any better.

This is always just a straight up great set of bubbles. Nicely aged and yet still going pretty strong. There's just a hint of that oxidized note that I like. A bit more on the toasty side than some of the others. Very well paired with some caviar.

Out of 3L: Unreal. super fresh, creamy, golden hue.... rich but still with that big, tight acid. Only trace amounts of oxidative notes, which really make this an incredible, integrated showing of a 28 year old wine.

From magnum, only 2 left! Definitely time to drink up. Feel at peak and possibly about to be on the downward slope. Regardless, in a good spot. Still has good acidity, floral notes, zesty, sour apple with some cheesy parmesan bubbles, fun, in good shape. All around crowd pleaser as usual.

Litt over toppen for min smak, men leverer fortsatt. 91p

Bordeaux dinner at Ripple with live rendition of the Star Spangled Banner (Ripple Restaurant in DC): Perfectly mature decadent nose displaying baked apple, slightly oxidized apple, fresh orange, cinnamon, brioche, creme brulee, oyster shell and mineral. Perfectly integrated harmonious palate, decadent shy yellow fruit and brioche driven palate impression, very fine slightly shy mousse, bright acidity, strong presence of mineral and a long sweet finish with oyster and brioche as the end notes. Fit for a wine loving Groundhog: Bordeaux back to 1970, by way of a 1982 trio (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): Well, above the average Cellar Tracker score. Why? Smooth, yeasty, crackling apple, citrus, brisk, streamlined - and I was thinking: "Where the hell are the oysters?!" I went back to this bottle several times, and even when it was a bit too warm - having sat through the entire dinner - it was spanking delicious. I recall visiting the estate in Champagne, and it was so marketing oriented. To the max. While the NV is no great shakes, the Grande Dame can kick ass. And so it was this evening with the 1990. A gorgeous bottle of bubbly.

Enjoyed for our 25 wedding anniversary (sorry no 1991 champagnes). Opened with a 2006 Dom and then migrated to this for the main course. Was quite lovely. Fine bubbles and very smooth. Curious how much longer will hold up given the faint bubbles. Throughly enjoyed!

Showed very well. Biscuity, savory, and mature but sufficient fruit and energy to not be too advanced. Long, textured, and spicy with some smokiness too. Lost fruit after 90 minutes or so. I wouldn't hold on to 750ml bottles past 2020, but I'm sure there are some wounded soldiers already.

Our First Acker Auction (Marea in NYC): Two LGD '90s in one week! This was drinking much better than the bottle from the week earlier. Much fresher and brighter. Zachys Power of Packaging - Jan 2016 (Smith & Wollensky (48th & 3rd Ave)): There was something just a touch off when we first opened the bottle. Maybe a touch more sour and acidic than it should have been (my memories of this wine are of pure soft cashmere bubbles a bit more on the fruit and a bit less on the toast which can be a satisfying). This time even when the mustiness blew off it was still a bit more toasty than I remember. The bubbles were very soft and almost barely perceptible. The wine was good. Not as great as the last time, but I preferred it to a nice Rose Champagne that was served later (Armand de Brignac).

Mostly 1966 Bordeaux and other surprises (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): This bottle left me perplexed as the initial nose was disagreeably musky. The palate was better and some of the initial nose blew off, but there was an impression of oxidation, rusty aspects to the palate as well. The body was there, there was substance and vinosity on the palate, but the flavors were somewhat past due or even a bit faulty, if not corked.

66 Bordeaux dinner (Ripple Restaurant in DC): Upon opening, some detected TCA like note. I often get this in mature Champagne, a bit dirty/mold like note but not TCA. The taint mostly dissipates with air. This seems a bit too advanced. Burnt Sugar, apple peel, honey and orange peel. Quite sweet, fully mature honey driven palate expression and medium finish. A bit too advanced.

Dinner with Friends featuring '90 Veuve LGD Jeroboam (Anvil Club): From double magnum, courtesy of Sue. The foil had dried out but flaked off easily enough and I was able to extract the cork gently, releasing that wonderful soft sigh. Luckily there were only seven of us for dinner so we were able to spend nearly an entire evening with this wine. Deep straw yellow color drinking much more like a fine Burgundy than a Champagne with a very soft mousse and fine, but short bead. An initial bouquet featured marshmallow, roasted apple, lemon creme and pear with a nutty undertone. Flavors of orchard fruit, stone and nuts with a lengthy finish. Sauteed apple, caramel, cashew and honeysuckle notes emerge as it opens further over the course of the evening. There is plenty of fruit remaining on the palate, ending with a vanilla custard quality. Thank you, Sue, for your generosity and friendship and sharing this beauty. 95-96 pts.

This is one of my favorite champagnes hands down. There's more of the lightness and honeysuckle although this particular bottle also had that faint mustiness that comes in aged champagne and while it doesn't sound delicious it really is. Creates an elegance to the wine. Had with a lobster bisque and a lobster salad and this wine held up well to both. Excellent.

We had this last September and I remember it being my favorite wine of the night. This was perhaps less the standout (hard to stand out next to a 1995 La Turque), but still really great. Paired excellently with the burrata. Very much enjoyed. Still some of the green apple flavor that I got the last time although this one seemed a bit more tart.

Chicago: wine, food, friends...cigars!; 9/17/2014-9/20/2014 (Blackbird, Les Nomades, Naha, with lunch at Shaw's Crab House): {en magnum} Came across as mature (and I mean that in a good way), with a brilliant, gentle nature to it that, in a way, set the pace of the evening (a good thing as there were 16 wines, including several mags, and 9 people). Fathers 60th Birthday; 8/31/2014-9/1/2014: Mature nose, not far from a white burgundy. Lemon, canary melon, biscuits, liver and sunflower seeds. But the real treat comes on the palate. A Saturday Night in KW (Dave's House): (From Magnum). A pretty and elegant champagne, if maybe a bit unremarkable at this stage. Nose is light and hints at lemon curd, rye bread, cinnamon, ginger, and perfume. Not fully mature yet in this format. Palate has everything in the right place: a good balance of roundness, dosage, and acid. Finish is medium plus. Could see this picking up a few points as it ages.

Saturday Night in KW (Dave's House): Popped and poured from magnum, followed approximately 2 hours. Light straw gold in the colour, showing a fine, persistent bead. On the nose, lemon zest, mineral, a touch of garbage, bread dough, baking spice and with time, reveals some light caramel and hazelnut aromas. On the palate, showing a lovely richness and class, with a moderate length finish, accentuated with tastes of lemon/lime, mineral, spice and yeast. A very nice wine, but ultimately, opened a touch too soon from this format. Still some upside here.

1975 Biondi Santi Riserva Dinner (Dave's House, Kitchener, ON): Very light colour...looks quite young with vibrant bubbles The nose is a touch reduced but that does blow off after a bit of time in the glass...aromas of lemon, minerals, autolysis, toast and dough. The palate is pure, but so young...out of magnum this was really much to young. Quite primary....lemon, lime, minerals, yeast, toast, dough and brioche. The finish is medium+...so young...minerals, citrus and lemongrass. Almost 92 If you have this in Magnum.....HOLD.

Well, of course I wanted to love this… It is big, huge actually, in a thick oxidized Krug style with yeast, miso, bitter almonds, and overripe stone fruits. The finish lasts forever. This is a bold wine that makes a statement like a sledgehammer. Not quite my style but I certainly appreciate that it is well made and will please many. A food wine. I think if I would have drunk this blind I would have scored it even lower. The brand name helps this one a lot (psychologically). It is also hard to not like wines you pay a couple hundred bucks for as well...

The Papies 20th Anniversary (Notting Hill Kitchen, Notting Hill, London): From double magnum/jeroboam. Indeed a Grande dame! We have always questioned the longevity of old GD's and we were worried about this but on the evening it gave a stellar performance. Had it after several magnums of Drappier 1990 and it was interesting to see it raise the bar. The colour is quite youthful and not as dark as other 1990s. On the nose it is rich, ripe, toasty, brioche notes. Beautiful nose, long and complex. Where it raises the bar however is in how youthful it is. Fresh and vibrant on the palate, good intensity and depth. Lots of complexity here. Very nice to see the richness of aged champagne co exist with vibrancy. Almost in a Dom Perignon Oenotheque way. Really a special lady this Grande Dame! 95!

I really liked this when it was first released, bought a lot and then drank all of it even though it was way young; now, I`m happy I did that because this and others I`ve had recently are not nearly as good; this did not suck, it offered some nice stone fruit, citrus and apple-pear notes all in a more feminine expression of grace and elegance than big and bold and in your face.

A fun trio of 88, 89, and 90 La Grande Dame. These were all terrific, with the 90 lagging behind the very good 88 and 89. The 89 has been and continues to be the class of the trio. It is flat out gorgeous. The 88 is also very good, with a precision that's easy to love. The 90 is a fine drink, but for a Grande Dame comes across a bit pedestrian.

Bordeaux Søskenparsmaking (Moss, Norway): Klar, lys gul, lett gyllen. Sødmefull nese som ved siden av aromaer av honning og moden gul frukt, har et litt støyende rosinpreg. Lett hint av VA. Mørk inngang. Moden frukt og avdempet syre. Noe rosinpreg også i munnen. Fin lengde. Faller litt sammen i glasset etter hvert. I utgangspunktet en flott vin, men virker noe varmeskadet.

This was a spectacular bottle of Champagne, youthful, great nose of yeast, toast, lemon. The acidity was right on, loads of citrus - lemon and lime, honey with great minerality. Bubbles were firing away, did not get an oxidized note in any of this. Was able to get about a glass out of the bottle. Extraordinary

Interesting bottle, but let me start by saying it was excellent. We tried this in two different glasses- a vintage champagne glass, and per an earlier review we also tried a pinot noir glass. The differences were dramatic. The champagne glass tasting highlighted the acidity, a light sweetness and retained the tiny bubbles very well for quite some time. The tasting with the pinot noir immediately showed the biscuity, toasty notes and later developed a raisiny nose and finish. I attributed this to the pinot glass not being able to retain the bubbles very well at all, which prematurely oxidized what was in the glass. This bottle has been cellared since purchasing in 1998 and still had plenty of life left in it.

Nutty, caramel, creme brulee notes; soft, slightly oxidized, but complex, earthy, with more subtle bubbles. Storage may have been compromised, but still very tasty. 90-91

A lovely grande dame indeed, opened for our beautiful granddaughter's first day on the planet. Gorgeous golden color, with very fine bubbles, and a toasty yeasty nose that carries onto the palate. I don't have much experience with Champagne this age, but having said that, I think it's nearing the end of it's bubbly drinking window. None the less - this was deliciously fine Champagne.

Gule epler, gjær og rugbrød. Veldig aromatisk. Hint av creme brulee og knekk. ¨
Intense mousse, stor munnfølelse og stor fylde. God syre, og jeg føler nesten litt fattanningrep i munnen, selv om denne Champagnen ikke har vært på fat. God syre.
Utviklet, men fortsatt veldig ung. Primærfrukten er på vei bort og for meg er denne vinen borderline mellom det gule og brune.
Litt endimensjonal på dette stadiet, og bør få mer tid. 2015-2040

Same bottle as Atreyu, and agree with his assessment. Impressive wine that surprises with its freshness and acidity. Could have mistaken this for a 96 if tasted blind. Great champagne

a BIG wine with massive acid. Not ready yet, will improve for another decade or more. Judging from other notes, there must be some badly stored bottles out there. This was an original disgorgement, and colour was quite light.

Did something I don't normally do, and poured this into a small-bowled white glass to try and tease more character from it. Bingo!
Showing signs of age, but much better than my last bottle, which was likely flawed. Awesome nose, with rich carameled fruit. Thin entry on the palate, but then the flavors explode on the late mid palate and finish. Very different from anything I remember, in that this isn't my typical "celebration" champagne, but nevertheless I'm enjoying it immensely.
For my tastes, I would drink thes now. As much as I like it, I enjoyed it more a couple years ago, though in thinking about it, those bottles came from a different source and may have been better treated. Who knows!? In any event, the fruit on this one is a bit drier and less forward than those earlier bottles.

Toasty, yeasty, leesy, showing a deep golden colour. Fruit has begun to subside, and a little oxidation is apparent. Drink up, unless you have large format bottles!

Continues to be a great bubbly. Mag consumed pre-dinner by party of 11. Nice golden color and fine bubbles. Mature, still nice acidity, clean, toast points, wet stoniness, and a little nutty as well. Drinking fine in the mags. Probably has a few years yet but certainly ready to go now.

An outstanding Champagne. The fizz still going on non stop and even in the colour a rich yellow which indicates a great champagne and extraordinary cellaring conditions. The rich perfum of nuts can take you to the oxidized but after 3 hours open it still had a rich mousse. Really refreshing on the palate.

Very nice, but definitely on the downward slope. oxidative phase, but not in a bad way. Still has quite a bit of fizz and the ripeness of the year does not completely overshadow the acidity. no reason to hold this longer.

Fill was about an inch below the foil. No obvious signs of leakage. Woody in character, maybe a little sherry. Fruit seems diminished, but does improve with some air, developing a nice apple note. Lacks any touch of sweetness to provide a more balanced flavor profile. Still has good bubbles/fizz. This bottle would be better served with food than by itself. I didn't score this, because a) it may be flawed and b) it may be that this just isn't my style though I have enjoyed bottles of this in the past.....

Terkel BYO: Intense nose with impressive yellow plums and apple fruit infused with a little freshly baked bread. The palate has some really inviting mature yellow apple/plum fruit. Very pleasant and well defined bubbles with a lot of bread in the aftertaste. Very impressive mature wine that has opened up very nicely.

Birthday dinner (My place): Light amber yellow color. Sophiticated, yet extremely inviting aromas of yellow fruits, fat yellow plums, mirabelles, sweet lemons, toasted bread, slightly oxidized and lanolin. On the palate it is perfectly balanced with fresh acidity, delicious, sweet fruit, yellow plums, mirabelles and lemons, and more complex, tertiary notes of beer yeast, vanilla, butter and nuts. Absolutely fantastic length, intensity and at the moment everything is coming perfectly together, making an overall super appeling wine.

Typical VCGD. Excellent pressure with a nice load pop of the cork. Hay color and very effervescent with a lovely mousse. Still gives an impression of youth. Taut and powerful with plenty of structure, citus and just a touch of autolysis. . A bit too aggressive in style for my taste. This needs further time to soften. Really a food Champane.

Ran's 40th Birthday Extravaganza (Israel): Oxidized nose, with brioche, yeast and mushrooms. Dark gold color. Lots of pronounced grapey Chardonay on the palate, with ample acidity and a fine mousse. A little further along than what I expected it to be (perhaps less than perfect storage for this bottle), but still very fine in the grander, heavier style of Champagnes.

Fantastic light colour, hint of green even; complete, weighty, red fruit, flowers, brioche, sève, roundness, green apple, consistent with the firm acidity; refined nutty evolution, very good length but not the ultimate harmony with bitters indicating a trace of fatigue. Very good but not great.

Yellow/gold in color. Aromas of pears, apples and toasted brioche. Very lively, fine mousse. Ripe, complex, medium-bodied fruit in the mouth with great depth and length. This is a great, mature Champagne and it was a joy to share with good friends on at 11:59 PM on New Year's Eve.

Steve brought over his last bottle and boy was it a good one. This was in the zone still showing youth, yet I was a lot more impressed with this than the 96 we tried several weeks back. Lots of rich layers of flavor with a full mouth feel. This is quite powerful yet it maintains a lightness and smoothness that can fool you. Brioche, Macadamia nut citruce peel and exotic fruit were all here. Very fine bubbles and mousse. The finish is big long and complex with the perfect amount of mouth watering acidity. Only got better with some time though it didn't stick around for long. I love the 90 vintage and this was probably the finest bottle to date. Awesome.

Copious amounts of butterscotch with metal and apple on the nose. The butterscotch is almost overwhelming, as if you were drinking something other than a vintage champagne. A lean wine on the palate with a good deal of yeast with a bit of orange rind and oddly still alcoholic. What I found most interesting on this wine was iit tickles your taste buds with just currents of the great minerality and acidity on the wine, . A very enjoyable bottle of champagne.

Anniversary Dinner - 2008 (Home - Minnesota): A great bottle of champagne. Both G. and I love the house style, and this bottle was exemplary in that regard. Like the Veuve of old, this is "middle of the road" in style. Not too lean, not too overdone. Fine bubbles that aren't big in volume but have some good staying power. Slight sweetness on the palate in the form of burnt sugar. A lot of length on a smooth finish.

Thirty Years of Phelps Insignia (1974 through 2004): Ordered off the list near the end of the Insignia vertical, and wow was this a much needed change of pace! Showed positively brilliantly with crisp citrus fruit, good minerality, a hint of bread dough and wave after wave refreshing acidity. Great, long finish. Ruined me for the last flight of Insignia, but at this point I didn't really care -- I needed this.

I thought the '95 and the '96 were both a little ho-hum, so I wasn't expecting more from the '90. But this was fantastic, still very youthful, with apple and tart pear and some orange peel, and underlying yeast and nuts. A great vintage champagne with years yet to go. I will look for more.

Dinner at Union (Seattle, WA): This started out very biscuity and warm, lots of yeast and butter. I thought perhaps it was a bit oxidized or certainly quite mature. However, with more time on ice, wow did this sharpen and focus. The minerality came to the fore, and this showed more smoke, charcoal and amazing precision. Amazing what a difference a few degrees can make. My only prior experience with this wine was very lacy and precise, but this was a bruiser, big and powerful. A very nice start to the meal.

Ullage of about 4.5 cm, and has been stable there for a couple of years, but I was still worried. When the cork came out without a 'pop.', I can't say that I felt any better. However from the first pou, it was obviously still bubbly. :) Deep golden color with delicate, fine mousse. Lovely nose of brioche and nuts, pears, wet stone and some lemon. Same elements in the mouth, with even more minerality, excellent yet subtle delineation, with good complexity and layering in a very extended finish. After about an hour it really began to open even more, offering more fruit and deeper delineation. Alas, as we had shared glasses with the chef and our waiter (and I'm happy we did) there was no more to be had. I'm just glad I still have 1/2 case left! Although this wine is ready now, I don't think there is any hurry, especially if the ullage is better.

Great bubbly! Citrus and apples on the nose, along with some moisture from all of the wonderful bubbles. Maybe a little lemon, too. On the palate, liveley with a little bit of nut, anong with citrus and cream. Damn fine stuff. The finish was almost off-dry but lasted about 30 seconds. Wish I had more, but it was my last bottle... Tasted at horizontal mult-varietal 1990 dinner at the University Club, accompanied by oysters on the half-shell with a citrus vinaigrette. Medium-gold in color and sporting a relatively brisk bead of small bubbles, the nose shows toasty yeast, dried cranberry and citrus. The palate shows a smooth, creamy texture with similar flavors. Long, smooth finish. Beautiful alone and excellent with the oysters.

A powerful nose on hazelnut.

This is always just a straight up great set of bubbles. Nicely aged and yet still going pretty strong. There's just a hint of that oxidized note that I like. A bit more on the toasty side than some of the others. Very well paired with some caviar.

Excellent showing.

Excellent.

Super soft bubbles, very smooth, with just the lightest sense of toastiness right at the end. Tasted again after a sip of the Montrachet and the sweetness was much more apparent. Liked this better than the '93 we had alongside, but the group was split.

Lovely and fruity, and lots of acid still. Dark yellow color, but bubbles are fading. Apples, yeast, bread and nuts. Like it, but maybe a bit one dimensional.

Intense mousse, stor munnfølelse og stor fylde. God syre, og jeg føler nesten litt fattanningrep i munnen, selv om denne Champagnen ikke har vært på fat. God syre.
Utviklet, men fortsatt veldig ung. Primærfrukten er på vei bort og for meg er denne vinen borderline mellom det gule og brune.
Litt endimensjonal på dette stadiet, og bør få mer tid. 2015-2040

a BIG wine with massive acid.

Amazing what a difference a few degrees can make. My only prior experience with this wine was very lacy and precise, but this was a bruiser, big and powerful. A very nice start to the meal.
