Opened at a wine dinner with friends; this was in a very good spot; still on the young side, but not too young; beautiful dark briary fruits, crushed rock, hint of smoke and pepper, floral and simply delicious. The palate is balanced enough to drink now for sure though I still see some upside. This is great and classic Chave.

Wunderbar, schon jetzt, sehr gute Reserven. Bis 2038 geniessen.

Nose is slow to show itself, needs some air time, then there are hints of the classic Chave truffles and grill smoke; this is more elegant and tame than the 12 Allemand paired with it, good acidity though not as blazing as the Allemand, more deep red fruit in contrast to the Allemand boysenberry, more complexity is yet to come, but this is an outstanding wine in the making, just needs another 10-20 years.

Allemand vs Chave (Kitchen Istanbul): Very pretty and open on the nose with dark fruit, cherry, and nice complexity, but clearly less floral than the Reynard next to it. Great acidity on the palate with tart fruit, cherries, good structure, and a hint of blood orange. Nice finish. This wine felt a bit reserved at first, but really woke up with air. Not quite as immediately enjoyable as the Allemand, but might get there with time. 94-95+

This was a nice bottle of hermitage we drank over two days. 1st evening with Hare @nuance , second on its own on the couch. Not the most concentrated or exquisite bottle of Chave, but that being said a bottle of Chave always is a treat. Good balance , no hard edges, shows it’s pedigree despite the vintage. One bottle left. No reason to wait with opening these, it will not get better. Drink now !!!! And over the next couple of years if you have more than one left

J.L. Chave Hermitage vertical tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Double decanted some hours before. Clear, deep ruby, glowing colour. Classic Syrah nose, spicy, bold and deep, speck and some plum. This is for me a mix of 2013 and 2009! Fine, high acidity and high, mellow tannin. Fresh, good pressure and tension, lots of fine red fruit, elegant, round and juicy. Long and lingering finish. 93++

Sunday Lunch with Raveneau Chablis and Chave Hermitage (Piccino Restaurant, San Francisco): Magnum. Ruby except for faded outer 10%. Pine needles and flowers. Medium to full bodied. Stemmy, brambly black fruit with the added complexity of licorice, earth, and dark chocolate. Surprisingly flowing and ready, especially out of a large format, although it finishes with moderate ripe tannins and has some late grippiness.

3h of decanting. Nose absolutely singing. Absolutely gorgeous. However a bit shut down on the palate, needed another good 1h to start showing its depth. I think this needs another good 5 years to start showing its full potential.
Decanted 2 hours. I found this pretty shut down. My allergies were acting up so not the best tasting night for me but I think this is too young to enjoy right now. Possible more decanting would have helped but I think I would wait a bit more time on this. A-?

cheers - wow, what an incredibly delicious and perfect wine! In 2017, I drank my first Chave, which was a 2000 vintage, and was 17 years old. Last night, I enjoyed this 2012 at 9 years old. I decanted for 3 hours, very little sediment. I thought the wine might be too young, but it drank wonderfully. A powerhouse syrah, but so balanced with many layers of subtle flavors. One of the finest wines I've ever tasted.

This is about as lovely a Syrah as I've ever had. I finally get the statements about how elegant & also powerful Chave Hermitage is. My friend was celebrating his 50th Birthday and well, lets be honest, opening something that's special is what celebrating milestone birthdays are all about. While I only had two bottles from this vintage, I'm still quite happy I opened this now so that I can get an idea of what this iconic wine is all about.

SLDS New Year #2: Pepper, spice, ash, bacon and violets with some red berries as well. The palate is clearly classy, but it is tightly coiled and controlled with the acidity pushing right through. 6 years on from the last time I tasted this, it has locked down and needs a fair bit of time to emerge. Still think this will be brilliant, but it is in a different spot right now.

Far too early to taste this, but I was there and so was the bottle. I had an empty glass, and well, it would have been rude to say no. Right? Good color, full-bodied, concentrated and classic, the wine is bright, crisp, fresh and lifted. There is a crunch to the peppery, blackberry and smoky red pit fruit. The tannins are a bit strict here. Everything is in place, but this is not a generous vintage. It is more restricted in style and will take at least another 10 years to become civilized.

Second Zoom tasting – Chave Hermitage (Mi Casa): Expressive nose displaying black fruit, blackberry jam, black berry, tapenade, a hint of garrigue already, rose and mineral. Excellent concentration, packed concentrated black fruit, rich and opulent, yet silky and fresh, bright acidity, strong mineral and a long sweet black fruit driven finish with grilled meat and tapenade at the end. It shows more tertiary notes that the 05 and 09. Stylistically, it reminds me the 01 a bit, i.e. surprisingly concentrated with generous fruit.

Sharing the same bottle of wine with friends - Covid 19 style: monster of a wine. Huge. Lots of oak on the nose and palate in the beginning. Then it started to integrate. That oak melds into the background. The ripe fruit is plump - generous, supple and delicious. It gains broadness without gaining sweetness. Saturating the mouth. @aewang said it became even more expressive and pretty the next day. Very nice wine, but if you’re gonna open one give it a lot a lot of air

Chave Night (with some extras) (The Grunzweig Wine Room, Los Olivos): Super primary (no surprise), with loads of iodine and bloody meat evidenced upfront, rustic and powerful. Took on complexity over time and the dark and red fruit emerged more, gaining richness and showing a floral aspect I found appealing alongside evident oak.

Ordered off the wine list at Oustalet in Gigondas at a very reasonable price. This is much too young, of course, possibly a decade to young. Chez Oustalet I got notes of black olive tapenade and airy fruit, this is light in style for an Hermitage. I brought the bottle home and on day 3, there's blackberry fruit/pie but also marks of oak. This really needs to be tucked away and cellared for many years. Is it grand vin in the making? I'm not sure.

POP !

An outstanding young syrah. There's a bit of that archetypical Chave polish on the nose and palate -- this is perhaps a little less syrah than it is Chave, but this is incredibly delicious no matter how you spin it. The nose shows some dense meatiness and black fruit, as well as a bit of iron. Simultaneously sweet and savoury, with velvety tannins. It's not the most potent; this has a bit of a lightness about it, so I suppose this is probably a younger-drinking edition, but it's killer now already.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Tasting with Erin Chave (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Huge black cherry and berry aromas and flavors with sweet spice and roasted meat. Very concentrated, structured and long, perhaps starting to get a little brooding on its finish. This shows what I liked best from the 2013 and 2014 vintages just tasted, with 95-96 point potential a decade+ from now.

From a sample at Hedonist wines. A bit closed nose, very primary fruit of blueberries and black currants with some smoky bacon hints. Wonderful balance and elegance with precise acidity, fine tannin and fruit in a beautiful mix. A profound wine, can’t find any flaws! Best Syrah I have yet come across. 97-98p
15 vintages of Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage, Rouge and Blanc (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): This offered slightly musty aromas with a stewed bacterial notion. There's also quite a lot of sweet, darkly complected fruit. After aeration, some of that funk blows off, and then a riper licorice note comes with, coupled with sweet dusty charcoal. Really beautiful after aeration and that funk blew off. The palate offers more lovely sweet fruit, with sweet soft tannins and lightly puckering acidity. Flavors on the palate are currently closed for business. Tart, rich acid comes in on the finish, coupled with dusty tannins. Soft, gritty tannic raspberries as well. Mostly showing its potential on that pretty nose today. 92+

France Soir beauty (South Yarra): My memory is a bit hazy at this stage but this was pretty good. That's all I can remember unfortunately.
Edit: Had another look at this and does seem a bit riper in style. Quite approachable and maybe not as backward as you would hope for its age. A touch of brett there but doesn't detract too much although would be better off without it. Invest in a barrel steamer J.L Chave!. This bottle was lacking in freshness so maybe not the best example.

94-95 ++ pts

Reserved nose, hints of dark crushed fruit, creosote, some woodsie notes; palate is dark, very brooding, deep red fruit, some apparent wood, very good structure and acidity, but so backward and secretive right now. Score impossible. Don't touch, put this away on faith, but is this a wine in the same style as the earlier great Chaves at this point? I wasn't drinking 78 on release, but I wonder.

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Double blind tasting, brief note. This had been decanted for 3-4 hours before serving. Black berries and cherry with slightly sweet spice in a fashion that made me think (and most other taters) this to be a great young Burgundy. Textural engaging. Sensational potential.

Chave-a-thon (Trentina's): My red wotn. That said, it should not be opened at the moment. It is tightly compacted waiting for a decade to allow it to explode. Right now its like concentrated Hermitage. Black raspberries, violets, roasted meats and black pepper. Firm hard tannins. On the palate, lots of fruit intertwined seamlessly with roasted meats. Maybe some black licorice. Long finish. A wow wine for sure.
Chave and co.: Exotic and lifted aromatics of incense, cherry, five spice, floral notes and truffle. Spectacular on the palate, the balance is remarkable with the fruit and the structure already in harmony. The acidity is brilliant and the wine just sings out already. Thrilling and exceptional at this moment, I'd love to see what happens to this in the future!

Very dark red color with a garnet hue. Bottle had been open about 3 and 1/2 hours. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. The nose is a bit reticent now, there's lots of brooding black fruit, blackberry liqueur, licorice, and hints of black olive. The palate shows restraint, medium-full body, lacks the mouthfeel currently, black and blue fruits, blackberry liqueur, mineral, a little savory, youthful with plenty of wood showing. The tannins are are round and approachable. This was very good, but showing a lot of youthful character that needs to settle down to become impressive. Needs 5 plus years. 91-94pts.

Drank the '11 last year which was more open than the 2012. Licorice, tar, bay leaf and raw meat. Big and very tasty palate. Great wine. Everything is there it just needs more time to become greater.

Gorgeous funky red fruit, tons of truffle and pepper.
Modern styling for this vintage. Excellent showing. SO very young.

POP !

lovely nose, floral, brambles, raspberries, touch of reduction here too
Very very approachable now, perfumed, such ripe fruit, very smooth and elegant, touch of dark chocolate on the finish
You should probably keep this but it's so good now!

Very tight and difficult to assess in a big tasting with a small glass and no decant. Lots of dark fruit, a touch of herb. The balance is good.

94-95 ++ pts

91-94pts.
