Somehow lost track of this, a wine that I should have opened 3 to 5 years ago. Bright red, with no bricking. Nice, but shy nose - smells like a syrah! Blueberries on the palate and a decent finish. Tannins are completely gone. At its peak, it probably would have earned a score of 90. Although it's still pleasant, it's no longer close to balanced. Now, I'd give it an 84, so I've split the difference.

This was easily the best showing of the better part of a case consumed. This bottle has shed a good bit of its fruit to develop more savory notes, a decent nose coaxed by some swirling, just enough remaining tannin for structure. For my tastes and from a very small data set, I find these bedrock syrahs best about 8 or 9 years after the vintage date.

2nd day: Poured and let stand 1/2 hr in glass. Drank over 1 hr. Smokiness on entry is less prominent; acid has significantly lessened, as has the spice; much smoother by the end of the glass; but also significantly less interesting. Not appropriate to include this in the rating; more for informational purposes for those deciding whether to drink or hold.

Poured and let stand 1/2 hr in glass. Great entry - smokey, meaty. Then a bit acidic at middle and end. After an hour, the acid has receded a bit, the wine is smoother and fruit/spice is noticeable, but not prominent. Still a nice bottle of wine, particularly on entry, but after entry the smokiness recedes and the taste is not particularly distinctive. Nice QPR.

Historically, I have had no interest in the Bedrock appellation wines on release. I’ve mostly ignored them, and I focus on the vineyard-based releases, but I've bought a couple here and there. Dug this 7-yo out of my cellar, though, and we had it as a second bottle. And you know what? This is great. Not as deep as the single vineyard bottlings, but has all for the delicious Syrah hallmarks at this age: olive, spice, crude oil, dark fruit. Acids are still very balanced, despite a delicious richness. It’s full and tasty and wants for nothing. These appellation wines are great values.

PNP, flowers and some dark fruit on the nose. Some briteness - good acidity, background tannins. Plenty of dark fruits and spice. In a great place but should last several more years. Solid 91 points.

Intriguing wine. Intense back of the mouth brightness and powerful mature fruit, which in this case make for a really fun, nearly explosive syrah. Enough tannins to keep the other components in check. While not as complex as Bedrock's vineyard designated syrahs, the North Coast cuvee is good competition for them, especially at the price. It would (and apparently does) make a great restaurant syrah to go with all sorts of food. A highly compatible match for duck confit, and quite a sipper too. Can't go wrong. Not near the end of its good times yet, a few years to go, at least. Maybe at its peak now.

PnP. This has entered a phase that is a significant step higher than the last bottle I had 14 months ago. Dark fruit layered with pepper, meat and a touch of smoke that went really well with brisket. It is time we stop calling this a great QPR (even if it is) because that does not do it justice.

This continues to improve since my last bottle over two years ago, and is now a beautiful aged syrah with shocking value for the price. No sign of going downhill.

Nice perfumed nose, reminds me of lipstick! Strange but true. This is a bit disappointing right now. It has an uncharacteristic harshness that disturbes the balance. 85. Drink up. I brought a second bottle recently to a Super Bowl party to help (nice try!) the Niners. This had more balance and syrah character and was much more in line with the Bedrock quality. This one I would rate 90.

Beautiful rich inky dark color in my glass. I smell flowers, a lot of people have stated it's violets, so sure. I don't know my flower scents enough to have a authoritative opinion, it's just beautiful. I also smell some rich earthiness, not bad barnyard, but nice forest kind of Earth. On the palate I get pepper and dark berries. There is really nicely balanced tannins, very noticeable but yet not harsh A nice long finish. I like this a lot!

It’s aromatic with a blackberry, black currant, olive tapenade, crushed violet, white pepper charred meat character with mouth-watering acidity.
It was sourced from 3 distinct sites, with each lot vinified separately on native yeasts and between 33-50% whole Though raised in 100% French oak, minimal new oak was used for its 11 months in barrel.

Effusive blackberry, charred meat (initially heavy but dissipated some), garrigue, grilled herb, sweet florals. Night two the meaty tones are still present but not near as intense. Delicious, medium bodied flavors of blackberry, white pepper, olive, with med-long savory finish, super suave tannins, and good acid to give everything a bit of lift. Sad to see my last one go but this is drinking so well right now.

Wow this was good, and blew away a 2014 bedrock old vine zin opened just before. Dark dried fruit, Meat, pepper, earth, and just flavor -- this kept me coming back for more. Longer finish, more body. Dont drink this if you want a subtle syrah. Me - 91/92, Wife - 91

Aromas of fennel, lavender, and roses. Round and rich on the palate, beautifully integrated tannins, good acid balance. Self-confident with no sharp edges, perhaps a little lacking in depth. 50 + 16 + 17 + 8 = 91.

PnP. No real nose. Palate starts out with deep smokey black fruit that quickly turns into black fruit infused with meat. Perfect compliment to BBQ ribs. Continues to be one of the best QPRs in California.

Bedrock's North Coast Syrah is one of the great value wines of California. It is impeccably made, smooth, hearty, but not over-powering, no taste of alcohol, suitable for drinking with or without food. I want to rate this higher, for sheer pleasure, but have been brainwashed to reserve higher points for other varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, rather than the Syrah varietal. Maybe that's why Bedrock's North Coast Syrah is such a value: great wine without the hype.

This has really come into a nice spot - fruit has mellowed a bit, and is in balance with the savory and floral elements of the syrah, which also don't dominate. Definitely CA syrah - but stylistically it's a balance between the super-lean/savory (arnot-roberts) and big-fruit model. has some elements of both, in harmony. Really enjoyable and I'd take this over many more expensive bottles.

Not what I was expecting from a CA syrah, in a good way. Dark fruits, orange peel, tobacco, violets, white pepper and cocoa, and a touch of gamey-ness. Well balanced with medium finish. Not terribly complex but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Odd bottle. Seemed very tight at first after 30 min decant. Nose of blue fruits and violets. Palate of blue fruits, stone and ink. Glycerine on the tongue with good acid and tannin balance. Enjoyable without being too complex. As it continued to open, it became a little thin and hot on the finish. Unlike any other bedrock Syrah I’ve had. Will revisit remaining bottles in near term to re-evaluate. In any event - remains one of my favorite QPRs each year.

On the nose a cubist arrangement of chocolate, coffee, blueberries, and violets. Intense dose of fruit and acid on the palate, broad but not unfocused, with an integrated tannic undertow, long aromatic fruit-driven acid finish. 91

Deep purplish ruby red. Lovely nose that needed a little time to open up with notes of violets, olives, blackfruits, and white pepper. Moderate tannins (6/10) and medium plus bodied. Elegant body with some pizzazz with lots of layers and complexity. Notes of baking spices, olive tapenade, anise, cinnamon, blackberries, and dark minerality. Long and extracted finish, definitely from the whole cluster press. Drink till 2023. (91+)

I'm usually a major fan of this low-price, high-quality Bedrock bottling, but this vintage, while still a straight-up awesome QPR, pales in comparison (not literally) to other North Coast vintages, including the current 2015 edition which may be the best yet.
This one still lacks a bit of depth, and manages to be both slightly too primary with too short a finish to really love. It's possible it will continue to evolve -- though I don't get strong tannins to indicate that clearly -- but we've tried about a bottle a year now, and all of it has been ... Fine, but not enticing.
For the sub $20 price point this is still arguably a value, but other vintages have just blown the doors off this one, leaving me ultimately disappointed.

Great QPR. Still a bit too young for my palate. Should have cellared for an extra yr or two. Meaty, peppery, bloody - on both nose and palate. Ample black fruit. Good minerality. Still primary and somewhat one dimensional, but very enjoyable and easy to drink.

Much better than the last bottle drunk 1.5 yrs ago. This opened up firing, and then gradually the tannins and spice appeared to balance the wine. Shows dark fruit, pepper. Smooth tannins on the finish.

Aromas and flavors of dark fruit, earth, bbq, and smoke. Light acid/tannins add structure. Drinking well now though it's not quite cohesive, I think this will be at peak in about a year then last a few but one to age long term.

Dark purple. Ripe fruit and alcohol aroma. Berries, chocolate, vanilla, and oak. Feels heavy. This is a great QPR at $26. Full body with robust balanced flavor. A bit of alcohol and some slightly sharp tannins. Should round out over time. I like this.

Dark fruit, plum, smoke, spice, hints of licorice. Smoke, dark berry, pepper, olive brine on the palate. Full and dense, but savory and not an overt fruit bomb.

Black cherry spice and smoke, or smoked meats in the nose, great round dark and red fruits in the body. Good acid structure and still firm tannin. Tannin softened on the second day, either drink with food--anything meaty, or perhaps wait another year although the nose and body are great now. I think this is one of the great values on the market today--although mailing list only.

I just signed up for the Bedrock mailing list and they do it a little differently than others I have joined. Instead of waiting around for two years they have a few wines you can get immediately and when you do, it moves you up the list (but maybe everyone moves up the list together?). This is not one of those immediate wines but hope it is typical of what I will be buying on their next offer. A cool weather syrah, which seems more complex than the typical warm weather version. Black fruit but not a fruitbomb--lot of black pepper and olive with a very smooth and long finish. Don't think it needed to be decanted.
Tight and reticent. Some swirling and time in decanter and swirling bought more to the fore. Showing more on the nose the second day. I'll give my remaining bottles a couple years

Solid and we'll worth the price. It's a touch too ripe or a tad sweet, but for an entry level blend drank too young it is great. Bacon and chocolate and spice and violets. Full bodied. Highish alcohol. Will merit a higher score in a year or two.

The nose features fresh black fruits along with strong floral notes, graphite, smoke, and even a touch of olive. This is definitely a style of Syrah that I like; nothing jammy or cooked about it, and plenty of character beyond fruit and oak (the latter of which is barely evident). The palate is rich but balanced. Lots of flavor here, but in no way monolithic. This is distinctly California Syrah, but in a way that expresses its origin without feeling "made". It's not the most complex Syrah, but to me, it's plenty delicious, and a nice value.

This won't last past the first hour (and these young'uns can start getting a touch flabby with time) but right now this is excellent and compelling: blackberry, tar, white pepper and a noticeable touch of vanilla and cedar frame an intense wine with taut acidity. At 14.5% this verges on being too ripe and sweet for me but lands just this side. Tannins firm but I don't know what age will hold for this.

This has evolved nicely over the past year or so. Similar to '12 vintage I had of this bottling, but with more structure and complexity. Notes of dark fruit, pepper, violets, and layers of au jus. Firm, fine sweet palate-staining tannin, good mix of acidity and a nice lingering finish. I still find this young, and think it should continue to improve in about 1-3 years more in bottle. But it is approachable and less primary than when I last had this over a year ago, especially given a good decant and time to breathe.

Violets, white pepper, braised lamb and plum. There is a strutting acidity with a medium, silky finish - the tannins are in the same vein. I see no reason to wait. Drink now - 2019.

I like it but not really drinkable yet, super closed down with some smoke and dark fruit, but only after a couple hours. The viognier did show early, but the aromas weren't integrated. A lot of wonderful elements that need a couple years minimum. 2-3hr decant helped a great deal but it still needs more time to integrate and mellow. I'm confident it will be fantastic, not just b/c of price but because of its overall quality.

Drank to follow up on the 14 OV Zin. I liked this a bit better, my wife not as much. Either way. Great QPR. There was a glass left on the counter on day 2. It did seem to have some VA, but I can't be sure about it. In any event not much and it was consumed.

Pop and pour and served with food (leftover pork roast, and some cheese, in case you were wondering). Followed for about 3 hours, with food and on its own. Dark color. Nose of dark cherries and some black olives. Rich and full bodied, with a nice streak of acidity to help carry the wine. This is a "clean" wine and by that I mean I do not get any horse/barnyard or wet wool flavors or aromas. Good rich fruit with a savory herbal and olive element. Tasted again the following evening without food. Still holding up well and quite enjoyable on day two. A very nice wine.

Great value at $19. This is more settled than the bottle I had several months ago. I continue to love all of Bedrock's offerings and really find great value in their entry level wines.
Decanted for 2+ hours then drank over the next 2.
Espresso and dark chocolate nose with a hint of baking spice. Palate has simple layers of dark fruit with minor briny and meaty undertones. The finish is moderate at best but the tannins are well integrated and there is just enough acidity to draw you into the next sip.

On pop and pour, nose exploded with coffee and black fruit. Decanted for 90 minutes and drank over the next 2+ hours. Palate had nice black fruit with a hint of blue fruit but did not seem to have the depth or layering I expected.

Continues to show well and provide great QPR. Blue and black fruits still dominate the nose, with this bottle showing more smoke, char and olive compared to my last one 5 mos ago. Some wines with the neighbors (Our home): Another great value in wine. It might be my favorite in the Bedrock stable. This seems better albeit tighter than the 12 which I loved. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, a bit of earthiness and some pepper. On the palate, juicy black raspberries. Tight complexity that unwinds in the glass. This was pop and pour and some air (or age) will help.

Couldn't decide 90 or 91 on this one, but I'll go 90 with room to improve. Obviously this is a baby, and was reticent even after a few hours, so I look forward to trying this one in the future. Raspberry, bramble, blackberry, black cherry, with some spice and a hint of floral. Still quite tannic and not yet resolved, but this is impressive at this age.

Drank on nights 1, 2, and 4. Fruit is very prominent on night 1 and not much different on night 2. Dark berries, flowers, lavender, fresh herbs on the nose. The flavors are a great balance between fruit and savory, with blue/blackberry, spice, pepper and hints of olive brine highlighting the medium finish. Medium body that hides its heft quite well, light, fine tannins and medium acidity.

My Grade: VG+. Very young, but quite drinkable now. This was enjoyed over 3 days with vacuvin and just kept getting better each day. Big, soft and voluptuous, there's just enough structure to prevent it getting flabby, balanced acidity, well made and avoids the Jammies. Not a lot of complexity now and will definitely be worth the wait in 4-5 years. People who are still avoiding Cali Syrah, really need fear no more as this is a great example of how to treat this noble grape.

Darker ruby. Spicy aromatics. Bigger and lusher than the basic Qupe, but it does retain some vibrancy due to strong acidity. Real Syrah inner mouth perfume. Blacker fruit not marked by any excessive sweetness. Very nice complexity and feel. A great success in a clear cut New World style.

An outstanding wine! Masculine and brooding during the first hour, akin to a meaty Northern Rhone, then it turns feminine and jovial, more akin to a Southern Gigondas. 14.5% ABV, seamlessly integrated. Try again in 2017. 91-92+

Needs more time in the cellar, but if opened, I would say a few hours of decanting is a must to allow this to open up a bit. Once it starts getting some air, it is quite a beautiful QPR Syrah. I'm going to let my other few bottles sleep for a few more years though.

MTP is widely described as a Zin-master (most certainly is), but his handling of Syrah may outpace his zin deftness. Hudson always exceptional, but what he has done year over year with North Coast Syrah is astounding. This punches well above cost, even gives some very notable single vineyards in and around the region a run for their money if not better. Oozes QPR. Balance, complex, yet for all the nuance there is certain power here. I may venture 2+ nights if there was ever any left over after night 1 or 2! Rating to traditional scale is 91, but rating juxtaposed to QPR is 100+.

Continues to be a QPR world beater. This latest installment is still very young and oh-so purple, but already shows great balance and purity of fruit. With a little time, I think we'll see the more savory elements here step forward as bit and create a wine with more depth and complexity. That said, the first bottle barely lasted long enough on the table to think about it.

I dunno... this is young and everyone says give it time, decant etc... but mine is drinking beautifully from the get-go. Light texture, violet in the glass, with significant legs. Bright red fruit with a delightful floral component on both the nose and the palate. Very Bedrock. Not much acid, some fine tannins, beautifully made and surprisingly balanced for its youthfulness. Even smoother and more integrated on night two, but this is already a lovely wine. And as usual, outstanding QPR at $22 direct from the winery.

Had over 2 nights. Let breathe for 1 hour on 1st night and consumed over next 3 hours. Young, tight, and a bit unyielding. Mostly primary at this stage with notes of dark fruits, pepper spice, blood iron, and black anise. Structured and complex, youthful firmly tannic with good mix of acidity, and decent length on the linear and lingering finish. Potential for good evolution, IMHO.

Based on notes from other reviewers, I threw this in a decanter for a couple hours. And what resulted was "wow". Savory in character with rich fruit. Slightly tight on the backend, with some fine tannins present. While I won't be able to follow my own advice, ideally these should be put away for 2-3 years. But with the right treatment, this is a compelling wine today, particularly recognizing the price point. One of my "QPRs of the Year" on a consistent basis. From memory, the 2013 is as good as or better than any prior vintages of this wine that I've had.

opened a day after getting my shipment. Pop and pour, Super tight but showing some finesse with a bit of white pepper and peppercorn. Your typical fruit profile with plum sauce sneaking in there. Alcohol showing through right now but I think that will simmer down with some more air or cellar time. For $20 this is a great wine to enjoy and can actually age quite well I would think. I won't put an official score in because of youthfulness and pop and pour but a lot of upside maybe 89-91?

Right off the truck and this sucker is wound tight. 2 hrs in the decanter and it's starting to show a little bit. Dark red fruits, smoke, and a touch of heat on the nose. I get blackberry, plum, and delicious "meat juice" on the palate with just a hint of a green note on the finish. The tannins are dry, but not as sharp as they could be considering how long this took to show anything. Decant for several hours if you want one now, otherwise this will drink beautifully for years to come.

Nice, pleasant and easy drinking. Typical Syrah with similarities to Northern Rhone. Really opens up after a couple of hours and gains complexity and length. Nice rounded tannins. Good now, will get better!

This gained an extra point or two for me on night 4 that I was not expecting as fruit and acidity became more balanced. Great value for immediate drinking but will try to wait a year before the next bottle. 91 initially, 92+ on day 4.

Such a good QPR. Dark berry with loads to tobacco, meat, and smoke. Great acidity and balance.

I just love this bargain. I wish I had bought a case, but this is my final bottle . Still, lots of tobacco and I am picking up dark berries. Must decant for at least 45 mins.

Popped and poured, consumed over 3 hours. Nose: Medium expressiveness, dark chocolate, earth, plum, and lavender. Palate: Medium bodied, dark red fruit and spice attack, chocolate and spice mid-palate, nice back-end lift, slightly harsh edges reveal the youth here, needs a little time to settle down.

The group found this to be a wonderfully structured wine. Good flavors, some spice and pepper, but most of all just really nicely balanced - not too much of any one element. Certainly will get more if I can!

Nice nose of spices, primarily white pepper. Medium bodied with dark fruit on the palate. A bit hot to start but calmed down a little after a 2+ hour decant.
2nd day: alcohol heat really tamed presenting much more of its spice and fruit notes. None left to see how it does on day 3 ;)

Young and will be good. I'm on a run of great California Syrahs, now what do I do with the overdone ones? The good new is that California finally has great choices to rival balanced Syrahs from the northern rhone, and at affordable prices

Blackberry fruit on the nose, with the tension that comes from cool climate syrah, good fruit on the palate, balanced with nice acidity, some tannin, but very drinkable from the get-go.

Inky dark ruby garnet. Forward nose of jambon cru, violets, red and black berries. Concentrated dark fruit on the mid-palate, strong but balanced tannins, good acid support, very long finish. A powerful flamboyant wine. 50+17+17+8.

I dunno... this is young and everyone says give it time, decant etc... but mine is drinking beautifully from the get-go.
