  • [Pop and pour.] A sweet floral nose explodes from the glass. This is a gorgeous sweet wine with perfect balance and harmony. Complex, with a long finish of peaches, apricots, and kumquats.

  • From half bottle. This is in a wonderful place right now where the fruit's still remarkably fresh and vibrant, but it's also showing an array of more savoury smoky and creamy development. So much complexity and depth here, and impeccable balance with those vibrant '01 acids balancing the richness and sweetness perfectly. Even though this bottle had a frail cork and showed some light signs of seepage, there's lots of time ahead.

  • Singing straight from the bottle. Mango, pineapple, dried apricot, peaches, enough sugar to manage a moderately sweet dessert, lovely acidity still. This is a great example of perfect auslese.

  • Golden color and rich honeyed nose. So luscious to drink, shows some maturity but is holding up great and has plenty of acidity to carry on for years.

  • Truly amazing mixture of sweet, fruit, and acidity.

  • 7th of 8 halves, pnp, perfect cork and level, as bottle noted in August, maybe fresher and with more upside. VF+ (19).

  • Patio happy hour for the first weekday of our staycation, and what a way to start! Ripe peach, a dash of brown sugar and a cherry on top, it’s a peach upside down cake. Swish it around and there’s more spice, and the fruit gets more tropical. It’s never goes full pineapple/lychee as other bottles have, but this one had a really good cork, and no seepage issues, so perhaps staying a bit fresher, even at 20 years of age. There’s certainly no sign of a decline anywhere in the near or mid-term future, as the fruit is still strong, and the spice elements remain complimentary rather than dominant.

  • 6th of 8 halves, pnp, perfect cork and level, back on top form, fresh, very complex and youthful if with little obvious upside. VF+ (19).

  • Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: 3 Guys, lots of wine (@home): Glass: Zalto Universal
Tasted blind. Drunk over three days. From half bottle. Clear, medium golden color. Beautiful Riesling Auslese from Dönnhoff, that lacks a bit of tension and energy. Not as good as my last bottle. Very deep and complex, very long and almost immortal, but this one lacked a bit of acidity, which made it a bit sticky. Nevertheless a wonderful wine with potential for some more decades. 92-93

  • 5th of 8 halves, pnp, perfect cork and level, darker, more baked fruit, slightly raisiny, starting to show age, amazingly unctuous, persistent and complex. VF (18.5).

  • From 375

A fresh, fruity, and floral nose with Nahe fruit salad, white flowers, honey, and red soil. It is juicy and ripe on the palate: Baroque, but with great balance. More juicy fruit, well balanced RS and acid, and a real sense of Hermannshoehle soil. The acid carries its opulent frame well. As I age I tend to enjoy more Kabinett and Spatlese for drinking than auslese, but this has lovely balance and a sense of power coupled with elegance. Youthful still. It held up for around a week in the fridge with little if any change.

  • Saw that this bottle was a bit of a leaker, and had a couple inches of ullage, so time to open.

Yeah, right, not to worry again. It’s fresh, flavorful and absolutely delicious. Lots of peach fruit, and it’s married to tropical pineapple and lychee elements. After a powerful hit of flavor on s mid-palate explodes to a higher level. It’s mouthfilling, sweet, balanced, bright, zippy, salty, spicy, fruity and endlessly long. Where Prüm to me represents an archetype of Mosel Auslese, this wine to me represents that ideal for the Nahe. It straddles the line between power and elegance, conveying the essence of the grape and the soil. Even from half bottle it has decades of life, and room for development.

  • 4th of 8, pnp, perfect level, cork fully travelled, now with roundness of full maturity, otherwise wonderfully layered and with exceptional persistence and concentration, flavour profile as previously noted. VF+ (19).

  • Glass: Zalto Universal / Riedel Vinum Riesling
Drunk over three days from half bottle. Clear, medium glowing golden-amber color. Clean, medium+ intense, fully developed and super complex nose with typical aromas of botrytis but also herbs, ripe passion fruit, caraway and anise. And a hint of warm butter.
It is certainly lusciously sweet, but the high acidity balances the acidity perfectly. Only 8,5%abv. Pronounced flavors of ripe, exotic fruit, honey and herbs, all with a fine mineral core. Dense, creamy and mouthcoating, but never sticky. Great energy and tension, but also perfectly balanced and incredibly delicious. The finish lasts for minutes and is super complex. It makes so much fun now, that I can’t imagine if it can get any better. But certainly there is no hurry. Great stuff!

  • #17-02. 8.5% abv. From half-bottle. This is a bottle of Donnhoff that displays the hallmark lightness of touch without losing power. The nose is airy and lifted, but perfumed and herbal at the same time. The palate is sweet, but it's fully restrained by the acidity here. Nothing is screechy or loud, but everything is quite intense all the same. A gentle giant of a riesling.

  • From 375ml. Spicy nice peach and sweet fruit. Lovely but soft for me palate needs a bit more oomph. Others like this a lot more than I did. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6 Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 15.5-16/20.

  • Indianapolis III; 9/15/2017-9/17/2017 (Indianapolis, IN): #17-02, 8.5% abv. From half bottle. The nose shows outstanding density and power, with so much powerful sweet fruit and fresh herbs. The palate is just as dense, but it's possible to pick out individual flavours if you are looking for them. It's that clarity and precision that you get on the best wines from this estate. Fairly sweet, this is balanced more by the mineral extract than the acidity (even though there's still plenty of that).

  • Opened the previous night. Deep yellow. Fragrant botrytis nose. Big, round, lush, fairly sweet. Tasted young and fresh but would have guessed Beerenauslese level richness.

  • From a half bottle. Light golden colour. Still felt a little coiled but was still stunning with its nose of citrus and red apple against pale honey, and the hugely dense and complex palate of pronounced apple, apricot and thicker honey on a slate / mineral background with quite searing acidity. Great now, great future ****(*)

  • #17-02, 8.5% abv. From half bottle. Somewhat muted nose, but the palate is absolutely lovely. Tons of ripe yellow fruit with a gentle touch of green herbs. Light, elegant, and refreshing. Shows a touch of botrytis. Sweet, but fully balanced with racy acidity. This has that magic ethereal Dönnhoff touch. Awesome riesling.

  • After a tasting of a few Barolo wines with some friends. All the wines were tasted blind. Intense golden yellow in color. I immediately get aromas of ripe quince, apricots, candied peach, honey and some mineral notes on the nose. Succulent and mouth-filling, with noticeable acidity, yet still lacks some freshness - I’d hope for even more acidity. Creamy mouthfeel, an enormously long-lasting finish with lingering aromas of yellow fruits and honey.

  • 3rd half of 8, drunk over 3 nights, sensationally good, even better, fuller richer more flavour than 2014 note, vv long and persistent, and still a baby! Very fine plus (19/20).

  • My favourites by Luis Gutierrez (plus private dinner at La Piperna) (Vila Viniteca - Madrid): Close to convince me but don't sure if time is going to benefice.
Aromas of apricots but very slight after all. On the palate very short. For my expectations, a holy sh#t. My fault. I had great hopes of it.

Falta un poco pero no creo que el tiempo de lo otorgue.
Aromas a albaricoques pero muy débiles. Muy corta en boca. Para lo que esperaba, un petardo. Quizás mis expectativas eran demasiado elevadas

  • Out of 375. Much riper and sweeter as expected, with lots of peachy stone fruit and lychee, with some more tropical fruit in there as well, and some botrytis. Dense and concentrated, but while there's enough acidity to hold it together and keep it from being cloying, there's not enough to make it racy and thrilling, and the acid only sneaks in late, so the finish is a touch tart but it's not quite there to balance the sugar in the attack. Not especially complex. Just good, rather than mind-blowing, and somewhat underwhelming relative to expectations.

  • HDH auction tasting at Tru; 6/27/2014-6/28/2014 (Chicago, IL): #17-02, 8.5% abv. From half bottle. So, uh, I guess this stuff ages. Perhaps a bit leesy on the nose, but the Donnhoff signature is definitely there. The fruit has receded a bit into the background, and this is starting to develop some secondary characteristics. A relatively creamy texture, this has lost what I would imagine is the acidic cut of youth. Can you fault this for being in the awkward teenage stage? A good balance of sweet and sour, with mostly floral notes dominating (I feel the fruit is starting to take a bit of a backseat), this will be even better once it sheds the awkwardness of puberty.

  • HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago, IL): Tons of peach, lychee, stone fruit, and pears. Beautiful layers of tropical fruit, some petrol and white floral notes. This is a great wine, that I wish I owned more of.

  • Agree with the effusive comments of Salil and Rieslingfan. You could list all of the fruit, spice, and savory elements that come to mind, or you can just enjoy the amazing balance and the crazy finish. Drinking beautifully now, if you like your rieslings youthful.

  • Nothing new to add to my earlier praise for this wine. It remains a stunning wine, one of the most compelling and consistently thrilling Rieslings I've ever had with an amazing depth and purity of fruit, minerality, gentle honeyed and floral notes and now showing just some signs of developing creamy and more savoury notes. The balance is impeccable, and the length is beyond words.

  • Flat out wow. This is incredible; a kaleidoscope of Riesling fruit ranging from ripe pears and peaches to fresh mandarin oranges, gently seasoned with herbal and spicy elements, touches of honey and a stony mineral character. There's a sense of remarkable purity and clarity to the flavours, incredible balance with really bright acidity beneath that balances the sweetness and keeps it very light and refreshing, and a finish that just keeps going and going. A tremendous way to finish a trio of amazing wines.

  • Saturday Night at Ian's (Ian's House): Loved this riesling. Dense waves of lychee and petrichor fill the nose with white florals and tropical fruits. The palate is something special - blending incredible power with an almost weightless mouthfeel. This is was I look for in riesling.

  • Half bottle. Light color. Fantastic blend of peach, papaya, and green herbs. Only moderately sweet, sappy but lively due to invigorating acidity, some minerality late. Little in the way of secondary development. A complete treat to drink.

  • Stunning Riesling. A spectrum of ripe citrus, apple and white fruited flavours merging seamlessly with herbal, honeyed and minerally notes and some developing creaminess. There's amazing complexity and depth here with the acidity keeping it very light and refreshing, but what really stands out is how everything combines into a seamless whole with a sense of real polish, flawless balance and a finish that persists long after the bottle is emptied. Amazing. (AP #17, for those who keep track.)

  • From a leaking half bottle - I should not have worried. This is still at least somewhat shut down from the glacial cellar. There is some aromatic development, though any hints of age are much more apparent on the palate, with an emerging sense of creaminess amply balanced by a bracing, slatey finish that lingers for longer than I can track. There's just a hint of spice, gently overlaying a fruit salad of flavors with no single element sticking out from the whole. Balance, balance, balance! Fabulous, but in need of more time in the cellar.

  • it's the acidity, stupid

vintage specific nervous acidity that settles into the corners of your tounge. 10 minutes after drinking it is alive and searing the deep of your mouth.
from 375, the sweet is less unctuous but more bracing balance to the zing

    special. dare i say profound

  • Clear petrol, just a hint, otherwise generous tropical aromas, botrytis not obvious, but still sweet and spicy on the nose. medium rich mouthfeel, great acidity to balance the whole experience. makes your mouth so very happy. peach, maybe sour cherry on the finish. went down way too fast. wow.

  • A night of Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle at Trestle on Tenth (NYC): AP #18. Still very youthful, yet there's incredible complexity already apparent. Shows seamlessly woven flavours of cherries, apples, peaches, pine cones, spices, earth, cinnamon and herbs - this is an amazing wine to sit down with and explore the many nuances and layers with tremendous acidity underneath and a very long finish. This may not have the size and richness of the younger Auslesen poured later, but the complexity, depth and purity of flavour is just mindblowing. Wow.

  • Visit to Tahoe to meet Eva and kids. A wonderful hosts in Cornelia and Maury.Opened at 5 pm and poured in decanter. Immediately everyone had a little sip:a bit reserved on the nose, but palate was greeted with viscous high pitched lemon cotton candy and limoncello liquor....hmmm...great start. 3 hours later served as a dessert at the end of the great dinner(duck). Tasted very different: deep flavours of poached peaches and apples in vanilla bean syrup, caramelized apricots and a bittersweet hint of greapfruit on the back - all supported by balanced acidity. A WOW wine. Sitting across Eva I could see that she was savouring every drop and offered about a half that was left from my pour. She did not offer any resistance :)
This was an Affair to Remember: " Oh darling...don't cry darling..anything is possible. If you can drink...i can get some Donnhoff"

  • Yellow with early signs of age. Nose of dried flowers, hints of candied fruits, bytrotis and some minerals. Did appear a bit muted and I thought I detected a hint of something TCA wet cardboard like stuff... Very little and it is very likely that it was just a bit closed. In the mouth the experience were similar, good fatness, sweetness and length, but still the feeling that this is hiding something.

  • I thought my note of the 2005 Prum spatlese had exhausted my hyperbole resevoir, but this auslese filled it right back up again. From the first sniff, the first sip, it is obvious that this is amazing wine. Sweet herbs, stones, ripe peaches, pears and apples all come out of hte glass in wave after wave. Just stunning, and a wine that never need touch the lips to affirm its fundamental greatness, but once it does there is even more proof. All the flavors of the rainbow, and a sheer drinkability that, for me, takes it past all but the greatest of true dessert wines. Even the Donnhoff Brucke Eiswein, iconic as it is, does not eclipse this for me. The Eiswein is fantastic, but its intensity takes it away from the sheer bliss of the Hermannshohle auslese. Each sip of the auslese is like the first, and the depth and breadth of the flavors is beyond anything that can be imagined. This is still almost painfully young, but already showing stunning flavor complexity without the patina of age. One can only imagine what will happen in three or four more years when the secondaries begin to impart their subtle influences upon this gorgeous flower.
