kɹʌɡ wɪθ dʌɡ (Chicago, IL): I shat on this wine hard when it came out (after all, it was released around the same time as the vaunted 164eme, which honestly hasn't turned out to be all that it was cracked up to be), but with the benefit of 7-8 years, this has really blossomed and become a bottle of Krug that is worthy of the florets label. Dense, mineral, and structural, but impeccably balanced between its acidity and concentration. Toasty, biscuity, and unmistakably Krug. Wow.
With the GJs, M and R Sunday dinner with elaborate salmon dish and salad. Followed by upside down banan cake. Hints if brioche on the nose. Krug means jug in German!

This was as good as I had hoped! Incredible nose of nuts, melted butter, ripe and fresh apples, stone fruit, chalky, brioche.. Just pure joy. The palate was just as mezmerising with incredible length, complexity and mouthfeel. Super rich. Open the bottle one hour prior to serving. I sensed that the fruit came out a bit more after some air which really made this wine even more sexy.

Krug tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Glass: Riedel Superleggero Champagne From Magnum. Clear, medium golden color. Beautiful ripe, fine, elegant and deep Krug nose. On the palate pure harmony and elegance and very balanced. Lots of stone fruit, salty mineral notes combined with great tension and energy. Long, lingering finish. Beautiful! 94-95

Heavy notes of yellow fruit, rich minerals, brioche, and heavy acid. Super weighty with graceful bubbles on the palate. Absolutely delicious. Better than many vintage bottlings I’ve had.

IPNC Weekend 2023; 7/26/2023-7/31/2023: Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Brought to the Salmon bake. ID: 314052 1990-2006 disg 6/14 after 8yrs on lees. Wow, this was amazing - Full, rich, ultra nutty, almond and hazelnut, toasty, so decadent. Just a killer bottle.

Popped and poured. Lovely nose of white flowers, seashells. The palate is medium bodied, rich, layered and nicely balanced. A little round on the close and showing early maturity but overall this is very good.

Tons of nuts and toast and richness and the usual Krug grand cuvee but a little richer and less acidity with the extra years. Hard to do better than a nicely aged bottle of Grand Cuvee

Krug Lunch (7x GC, 7x Vintage, 3x CdM, 1x CdA): Seven Grand Cuvees: 157, 163, 164, 167, 168, 169 and 170th. No surprise that the better base vintages showed best. The 157th (95 pts) showed most round and complete due to the extended age. The 164 (95 pts), 168 and 169th (both 94+ pts) all show good substance and superb acidic spine for graceful ageing. The 164th, from magnum, has an elegance to it which is above all others. The 170th (90pts), 167th (92 pts) and 163th (93+ pts) seem a bit leaner compared to the others and not all of them will be very long-lived iterations. But this tasting showed clearly, that even the lesser vintages of Grand Cuvees easily need minimum 10 years after disgorgement to start to truly shine.
TN: This is in a beautiful first stage of maturity with an expressive nose and palate, good mid palate density with toasty and bakery notes, some riper yellow fruit and a citrus spine. A tad short but overall a very pleasant 93+ pts experience. Quite balanced. My guess is that this will reach it’s peak rather sooner than later but it still needs a few more years to further become a bit rounder, finer and creamier.

Krug Tasting (Memories Bad Ragaz): Krug tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. Main takeaways: 1/ Clos du Mesnil and the 1996 back vintage were show-stoppers, 2/ 164 was in a different league of the Grande Cuvée line-up, 3/ a general feature and maybe signature for Krug for me was the fine integration of autolytic notes into a balance of fruit and mineral notes. The textures tend to be soft with just a splash of cream and structures built around acidity. 4/ Clos du Mesnil towers over the vintage and GCs in terms of precision, complexity and elegance.
Tasting note: This was an add-on bottle outside of the formal tasting, hence only brief notes: Pear fruit, slightly candid in nature, a glimpse of vanilla and steely-like minerality. Fresh palate built around acidity, but not expanding the overall complexity.

Krug GC 162-169eme (Chicago, IL): 116014. Showing better than when I wrote this off a few years ago; it's still on the lean side, showing a sharp acidic edge versus some of the other wines. Quite citric and malic, but this has filled out quite a bit from its youth.

Opening wine for a small (belated) celebration of Xavier94’s birthday, I defer to his note. Base vintage’07 with multiple years in cuvée, oldest being ‘90. Slow to open and strut its stuff, turns rich and complex yet superbly elegant. In a great place right now but no rush on these. CT says I have one more. Sure hope so!! 94+

Immediately shows patisserie scents of lemon custard dominating at first then opens quite quickly to honeyed orchard fruits, almond cake, graphite/Smokey minerals and vanilla. While the acid is quite high on this, the wine totally changes as it warms up a tad and shows the hallmark Krug generosity to the nose and palate. A rich wine, indeed. I”m glad we gave this bottle some time to open up and warm up as well. Tasted two other times including a Christmas Eve bottle I never took notes on (2021) with similar impressions- starts off fresh and stern with higher acidity but then blossoms to more classic Krug richness. In this case, there is no rush on this (163rd) bottling.

Showing a strong smoky / gunflint note I’m not used to in Grand Cuvée, overlaid on the usual rich complexity. I bet it would have dissipated with an hour of air but we finished it before then.

Opened and drank over the course of a 2.5 hour lunch. Good depth of flavour, good acid, lemon and some green apples. Good finish to boot. Enjoyable and very well made - but I left feeling a bit underwhelmed? Maybe I have been drinking too much vintage Krug/ grower champagnes/ older MVs...

My last 163eme magnum. iD 315047 and disgorged 15 Summer. Another magnificent experience. Krug Grand Cuvee magnum and double-magnum are in another league from standard bottle. It is difficult to not be moved by the wonderful bouquet and palate -- toasty, fruity, nutty, and lingering acidity. Wish I have a dozen.

Other bottles of the 163eme have shows impressive but surprisingly young yet! Classic Krug generosity and richness with baked apple, hazelnut and ginger with buttered toast and a whiff of marzipan. Lots of vibrant bubbles still that work well against the ripe flavors. Delicious! Let this one open up and don’t serve too cold!

Light golden; richness from initial nosing through the long finish! Bruised apple, pear, toasted bread on nose; no clear signs of age beyond the color and complexity. About as large and heavy a Champagne for me to still appreciate. While other bottles say “163eme” on the label, this one didn’t but at least had an ID# telling us what we needed to know (blend of vintages from 1990 onward, base year ‘07). No big secret like the last Krug a week ago that I’m guessing was the 161eme.

From 375ml with ID 114005. This has aged well. Smoothed out and depended, with a darker golden color. Has a more profound yeast bread profile, along with the slightly rounder fruit. Very enjoyable.

Lovely wine. Lush, tiny intense bubbles fills your pie hole with such dense richness of a great champagne. I think base is 2007 and I think there's some 1971 in it as well. At least that's what the krug website said. A great bottle that you should not wait any longer to drink. If anything, I wish it had the tiniest bit more crispness and bite to it. It's soft lush and very rich. That and the Beluga caviar was an incredible start of the evening. Drink up !

Medium nose with notes of caramel, nuts, lemon, toast. High acidity. Long finish. 70% base of 2007 vintage. Personally prefer to aged it further to get bottle aged for more toast note.

I don’t know, this just wasn’t firing on all cylinders for me. Very fine mousse , aromatically was a bit muted and the palate didn’t pop like Krug usually does. Even with ample air and on day two it did not improve or evolve to e upper echelon that this bottling normally hits.
This is still so young, but I enjoyed it more than my first bottle a few years ago. Very fresh with just the right amount of toasty/leesy flavor. Acidity is starting to integrate, but really this will be so much more in 5 years. Will try to hold the last bottle until then.

Popped and poured. Pretty nose of orange rind, brioche and saline. The wine is medium to full bodied, fleshy and open for business. Delicious orchard fruit, lemon rind, crushed rocks with a little kiwi giving a tropical twist. My old issue with this wine is I felt a little energy which makes me wonder whether it’s going to age well.

Had it together with a 161eme magnum. Both were excellent and displayed what a Krug NV is. Sure. Both will keep getting better for 10-20 years. When you finish a Krug NV like this, you keep asking yourself why you didn't have more in cellar.

I am amazed every time I am enjoying one of these. Bit deeper yellow color, with a bronze edge to it. Good precise mousse (not smooth, soft or overwhelming). Deeper more tight nose, clearly notes of Rye bread. Deep rounded taste. I have tried pair it to many different meals, or like this evening after dinner - no matter with what, it always seems to accomplish and deliver.

37% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, 31% Pinot Meunier; 145 wines from 1990-2007; disgorged Autumn 2014. Clear, pale gold with a fine, very active bead – nose reductive at first, then toasted panettone, dried fruits, candied fruits, lemon, petrol. Medium+ acid, 12% ABV, medium body, medium finish. My first Krug! While I enjoyed it very much, I've liked other champagnes equally or more. I'd like to try another "vintage" of Krug for comparison.

These last three bottles of the 163rd edition have been a little ugly. I didn't really enjoy a single bottle. They were harsh, and a little metallic, and slightly off putting. My storage was perfect...
congrats J+J: vigorous bubbles. light golden straw color. Nose reductive at first, then broadens to a fleshy golden peach. Palate broad, powerful, fleshy yellow fruit, some honey character, some minerals. For this bottle at least, drinking very nicely, showing both power and balance, and still seems young. 93 pts

A generally solid bottle of Krug, but definitely one of the weaker releases. This has a mild biscuit quality on the nose, as well as a bit of white fruit. There isn't the expected Krug richness and power on the palate -- it's a lighter wine that ticks the checkboxes, but I think it's fair to expect more given the name on the label.

First Krug and I have to say it lives up to the hype. Lemon meringue, marzipan, flowers, yeast, honey and orchard fruits. Generous and velvety on the palate yet with a firm structure of acidity and minerals. Even at the tactile level, the mousse is so creamy and satisfying. Long finish. I typically don't like this richer style of champagne but consider me a convert. Best NV champagne I've tasted to date.
Pichon Lalande with Filet Mignon and Aniko, Derrald, and Alex (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): With Aniko and Derrald and Alex, nose of honey, slate, shale, hints of lemon/lime soda, same on the palate, big body, delicious, intensely concentrated with minerals and honey, slightly dry, crisp, refreshing, more honey on the long, long finish, will improve over the next 3 years and reward the patient, easily last another 10 years.

This is a lovely champagne still early in its life. Very fleshy with flavors of yellow and tropical fruit, almonds and toast. This has excellent purity and balance while at the same time having some exotic flair. I don’t think this will be very long live but givens its krug enjoy over the next ten years.

New years eve at home: Best bottle yet - a pure delight to drink this, has no rough edges, just so much loveliness on the nose (roasted hazelnuts, smells of bakery, some milk chocolate) and a deep complexity that just makes me feel this is so worth the money. Fresh and energetic on the palate this has a long ways to go still.

93-94 This showed better than the previous two 163's I've had recently. This seemed more developed and took on a richer and toastier profile than I remembered. May have just been temperature, either way very much house style and enjoyable as always.

HDH Dec auction trip/dinners at SKY and RPM Italian; 12/13/2018-12/15/2018: Classic Kruggy goodness here with lots of ripe fruit, freshly baked biscuit, and very light hazelnut and toasty notes; it's a big wine but very light on its feet with no shortage of acidity and effervescence, and it's a lot of fun to drink as a palate cleanser.

HDH December auction; 12/13/2018-12/15/2018 (Chicago, IL): I've never been a super big fan of this edition, but this bottle seemed to be showing a lot better than my previous ones. The Krug quality shows a little more prominently here, with that broad richness really starting to play up in the form of a bit of biscuity goodness. The palate is large-scaled and rich, and seems to have gotten bigger than I remember it being. There does seem to be a touch of white grape juice sweetness that needs to dissipate before this can become a truly great wine.

Drank from 750ml this time compared to from magnum back in September 2018 and was much better, as expected. Nose is fresh white flowers, white nougat and fresh-peeled hazelnuts. Palate is immediately very refreshing green Granny Smiths apples in a big impressive blast of acidity and wonderful fresh pettilance in the mouth, followed by white nougat with green pistachio nuts, fresh-peeled hazelnuts off the bush, hints of brioche to come in the future. Great length in the mouth and with considerable promising youthful resonance and reverberance for future development. Was impressive as an aperitif (which I rarely find with Krug Grand Cru) but really blossomed with very simple Suckling Pig taken straight out out of the fire. Drank as a gift to friends we visited in rural Thailand, which also helped too!

Lazy sunday afternoon Krug event - Vertical of 160eme-166eme , some vintage brut, Mesnil and Rose.: I didn't love the 163 (or 07 base) on release. I felt it was too jagged, fruit was a bit too sour and it fell kinda flat to me. It's really knit together well since then. It still doesn't have the clean acid drive of the 164 (or 165/166) but it's fleshing out, the fruit is generous and sweet and the mouthfeel is soft and yeasty. I don't think it'll age particularly well in comparison to the surrounding vintages, but it's drinking well now.

Lunch at Jade Court (Chicago, IL): Definitely a relatively weaker Krug GC, but it's still a solid bottle nonetheless. Fairly intense with its acidity, but not as complex as the best editions of the GC. It's a lighter release, and all else equal, one that I would skip.

Can't think of a better way to kick off a roof top barbecue with good friend than a bottle of Krug! Beautiful golden color - nose of golden apples. On the palate - just what you expect from Krug - rich mouthfeel with nice clean bubbles, some yeast and bread dough but lovely precision from the tart apple and lemon fruit with some honey and minerals. Complex and delicious!

These took a little time to come around... but when they opened up there was nuttiness, and rocky mineral, and zippy white fruit. Hints of darkness also snuck through which was at times off-putting. That's 4 bottles from a case that were good, but not great.
Arrived late for dinner at Jade Palace. Tasted from bottle after 2 hours of air already. Same tasting note as before. With the addition of some salty wet stones minerality, soapy white flowers, and chalk. Seemed to shut down quite a bit after another hour in the glass. This needs more bottle age.

Krug Release Party (Zachys DC): This is a magnum so a year behind the current release of 750ml bottles. According to the ID code (415058), it's based on the 2007 vintage (73% of the blend) with 11 other reserve vintages back to 1990, 37% pinot noir, 32% chardonnay, and 31% meunier. I would have guessed a much higher white grape percentage. Aromatics are very toasty - sawdust and some nuts. It's bright, pure, and cleansing with bracingly lemony fruit but it hits the palate like a sweeping chord even though it's focused on the higher registers. The attack is fresh and fruity but it's more tertiary on the back end, where it shows flint and root beer flavorings.

Aromatically really nice with citrus fruits, lemon, orange peel, toast and slight smokey note. Palate delivers an energetic young wine with creamy mouse and focused palate. Honey crisp apples, lemon zest, pastry, apricot, almond and smoked orange notes on the palate. Outstanding as usual.

Krug Grande Cuvee "Vertical" (Farr Vintners London): From magnum. The nose rich, generous, a good amount of toast. On the palate the oak also most apparent compared to other releases but very well integrated - red apple, salinity, yeast. Quintessential Krug for me and for the group. Drinking GREAT now - my favorite of all the Grande Cuvees for current drinking. This is a blend of 183 wines. 31 per cent Meunier (highest of all Grande Cuvees) and 73 per cent of base vintage 2007 (also highest pct). Impressive and I was surprised by this as it comes from a more difficult base vintage. Maybe the magnum format also helped? 95 points and drinking at peak now in my view.
On the tight nose primarily lime notes, hint of apple, light bread notes, on the palate quite primary and tight, firm lemon-driven acids through to the long finish, superb persistence, over the course of 2 hours it settled nicely- maintaining its firm presentation but showing a bit more citrus fruit, mousse notes largely in hiding, in comparing this and 164, 165 and 166 to prior general experience- the 163 is the best representation of what I would call the "typical" experience for this wine at a young age (with the caveat that "typical" at Krug is still marvelous in the grand scheme of things.) (****), needs a few years to settle and cream a bit. 2020-2035.

Wednesday wine night casual at ES BK. Tasted blind. Pop and poured. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, light gold colour. Legs. Fine bubbles. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with immediate aromas of roasted malt barley, toasty almond nuts, caramel, honey, citrus lemon. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol (12%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of vinous red and golden apples, honey, almond nuts, caramel, malt, marzipan, citrus lemon, some green apple/pear with more air. Very complex. Long finish. Very very good quality. Drinks so easily. Am not a great fan of Champagne in general, but I asked for more of this. Open and so inviting. Glorious future ahead. Can only get better with more bottle age. Based on the 2007 vintage. 37% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, 31% Pinot Meunier. Dosage 6 g/l. Disgorged 2014.

NV KRUG 163eme EDITION GRANDE CUVEE- in a half bottle and a perfect fit inside the foot mold of one of my swimming fins [the NV Krug Rose half bottle occupied the other fin]; this is the first time I realised the code on the bottle actually specifies it`s for a half bottle; the code was 114005 which denoted the bottle received its cork in the winter of 2013/2014, comes from 183 wines from 12 different vintages with 1990 the oldest and 2007 the youngest; it also was ages for over 5 years, is made up of 37% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay and 31% Pinot Meunier and is part of the 163 eye edition.
Tasting notes: rich and full bodied with layers of complexity, this had an ever evolving fruit profile which included peach, pear, apple and lemon all of which had accents of ginger, toasted brioche, almond butter and honey; it was so full on, our best enjoyment was to just take occasional sips and enjoy all of the treasures as they slid in, over and down as did the sun into the ocean.

Tasted ahead of 2004/2003/2002 vintage. Disgorged Q3/15. Blushed golden yellow in colour. On the nose white/yellow stone fruit, citrus fruit, spices, hints of red fruit, minerality, good depth and slowly opening up in the glass. On the palate fresh and precise, mineral, lovely fruit, fine mousse, quite tight still. Very long. Fresh, almost a little lean at times. Hold. 92-93+

163ème. iD 116003. 90-07. Disgorge 15/16 Winter. Beautiful and layered bouquet of zesty fruits, yeast, floral, and biscuits. Like other 163eme I tried, it lacks texture and structure at this stage. Obviously not as good as 164eme but should improve with some ageing.

Plum Market Luxury Fall Tasting (Chicago, IL): This comes off a little rough, but certainly tastes broader and closer to the Krug house style than the super zippy 164eme. Wonderful! The nose is pitch perfect balanced between oven fresh baguette, ripe pears and a basket full of freshly plucked market citrus fruit. Great wine overall. And drinking really well right now. I understand this is supposed to be slightly inferior being based on the 2007 vintage as a base, but the blend of vintages is just really showing well, and this is a great wine as is.

Based on 2007 - this is lighter than expected with great balance and decent ageing potential. Nice aromatics but needs 3-4yrs in bottle before it puts on weight and becomes more interesting. Lacks stufing to become one of the better Grand Cuvees though. 92pts now, potential for up to 94pts in the future. Hold to 2020.

163ème iD 116003. Wines from 90-07. Disgorge 15-16 Winter. Pale yellow and dancing bubbles. Very aromatic when serving with big burg glasses. Young, zesty with touch of yeasts. Good as a young champagne but should cellar it for at least 3-5 years for a more balanced palate.

Based primarily on '07, disgorged Spring 2015. Shows a fair amount of oak on the surface, but it actually holds it well. Loads of sweet apple, peaches, citrus on the nose and palate. Very nice with a hint of brioche on the palate. Excellent acidty, good richness and a long finish, which leans a touch tangy. Pretty good.

A pity it was consumed next to the vibrant 164. The 163 is rough around the edges in comparison. It has a grainy texture running through the palate with obvious wood influence and oxidized orchard fruit. The yeasty flavor overwhelms the fruit and there's a sourness that's just not appealing.

A private lunch (Restaurant The Man Behind The Curtain *, Leeds, UK): Base vintage 2007. Relatively restrained style, more about elegance than about power, perfectly balanced, seamless and complex, but somehow not as distinctive or outstanding as I associate with Krug - or its price tag.

The Athens Wine Event to put all the others to shame (Paleo Reastaurant, Piraeus): Krug ID 116-003, 2007 base wine and received its cork in winter 2015-2016. Round and effortlessly balanced , very elegant and with honey notes overlaying the toasty, yeasty feel. As always very beutiful and a great way to start a dinner. It did feel however a bit too round as if it's loosing its vitality especially compared with the 2008 base we had after. 92-93

Krug Tasting with Olivier Krug (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): This has 2007 as the youngest wine, making up the plurality of the cuvee. Most recent release, so no surprise it is very bright and slightly tight. Still nicely elegant and well balanced. Classic Krug richness, but I don't think it will ever match the charm of the 162eme.

Painfully young and bordering on the shrill, it took on weight as it warmed up and got some air, I think it has the materials to be an outstanding wine but it needs time.

Note: A blend of 183 wines from 12 different years, the oldest from 1990 and the youngest from 2007, spent over 8 years ageing in the Krug cellars , 37% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay and 31% Meunier, disgorged in winter 2014/2015.
Expressive classic Krug Grande Cuvee style, ripe citrus and stone fruits, flinty minerality, yeasty, with a tough of sweetness and balancing sharp acidity. A great showing which can only get better with further bottle ageing. Will try again soon.

kɹʌɡ wɪθ dʌɡ (Chicago, IL): I shat on this wine hard when it came out (after all, it was released around the same time as the vaunted 164eme, which honestly hasn't turned out to be all that it was cracked up to be), but with the benefit of 7-8 years, this has really blossomed and become a bottle of Krug that is worthy of the florets label. Dense, mineral, and structural, but impeccably balanced between its acidity and concentration. Toasty, biscuity, and unmistakably Krug. Wow.

Tasting note:
This was an add-on bottle outside of the formal tasting, hence only brief notes: Pear fruit, slightly candid in nature, a glimpse of vanilla and steely-like minerality. Fresh palate built around acidity, but not expanding the overall complexity.

Drink up !

Tasting of 163, 164, 165 and 166 side by side
