  • not blind
A bit disappointed reading the other notes. Decanted for 2 hours. Still closed and reduced fruit notes, less elegant than expected. maybe better in a few years. 93-94

  • A bit too early, but the potential is clearly there. It will be fantastic in a few years!

  • Fantastic wine, even right now. The nose on this is so appealing , like a bouquet of fresh flowers, perfume spice, cherry fruit. Couldn’t get enough of the nose. Gave it some time in the glass and it opened up wonderfully. Despite its youth and future potential it drinks surprisingly well now. Will be even more amazing in another 8-10 years.

  • Delicious Super Tuscan. 60% cab sav, 30% Merlot, 10% Pettit Verdot. Rich, black cherry , black currant, earthy, leather. More tannic than a classic Bordeaux blend but it a good way. Just entering its prime drinking window. 14.5% abv.

  • At the start of the enjoyment phase. Already very powerful. The depth is yet to come. Tuscan Bordeaux blends seem to cope better with heat than the Bordelais itself. Reminiscent of a great Pauillac.

  • Star anise, plum, with a hint of tobacco leaf aromas. Super dry, with a full set of tannins after 4 hour decant. Flavors of cherry cola, touch of chocolate, and a rosemary with quinine finish.
Super Tuscan tasting Saturday, and had the pleasure of also tasting the 2017, 2019, 2020 all of which need more time in the bottle.

  • Double-decanted which I would recommend, but no extensive decanting needed. Leather, mushroom, vanilla along with fruit of red berry, black currant and herbal aromatics. The flavors are a bit blurry, however. Fresh acidity which dominates the palate. Tannin still grainy but stating to soften. As always a solid, Bordeaux-like performer. I have scored this higher in the past when initially this also had a nice floral overlay.

  • The winner of the night between three excellent 2016: Saffredi, Argentiera and Guado al Tasso.

  • Similar to last note, again, it needs time to open up, but than it really picks up volume and length.

  • Glass from magnum. Dark fruits, rich and balanced structure, leather (Brett?) on the nose. Obviously young, already enjoyable and accessible compared to the Solaia 2017 on the table.

  • Tasted blind at a social event, hence brief notes only. Nice bouquet of smoke, cedar wood, dark cherry, graphite and pencil shavings. A juicy palate, but wild with mouthcoating tannin and hence felt quite young. A nice Super Tuscan which in a blind context resembles a classic Bordeaux.

  • Best bottle (Ristorante da Salvo, Stuttgart): Quick & dirty note: Deep ruby color. Spicy nose, some espresso powder, deep.
On the palate high acidity, high tannin, probably a bit hot. It has all it takes to become great in the future: structure, extract, depth and density. Currently it is just a decade too early. 92+++

  • Deep garnet in colour. Nose shows blue fruits to the fore with black tea and hint of cocoa. Full bodied with svelte tannins, it is inky and delivering up gorgeous blue fruits and Tuscan sunshine with a little oak polish which should be subsumed with proper cellaring. Finish goes on and on. Quite primary. Needs minimum of additional 5 years and ideally a decade. Classy wine. From Zalto Bordeaux.

  • Almost ready to drink, wait 2-5 years. A little harsh acidity. A potential is there. Tasted in Finjävel restaurant. Bellissimo!

  • Back to Riesling Country 2.0; 6/17/2022-6/21/2022 (Flörsheim-Dalsheim, Bad Kreuznach, Niederhausen, Oberhausen, Bad Sobernheim , Bockenau): Chosed this one later that day to pair food at the restaurant of our hotel at Bad Kreuznach,
a bargain there, paid 59€ for this bottle,
initially enormous cassis bite, really full bodied, mineral hints, violets, lots of sweet, ripe tannin, and this is the problem,
for me lacking therefore food friendliness, while continuing dining this wine was too filling,
    better enjoy on its own,
great future ahead, a stunning wine,
but young and I do guess probably never food friendly, **(**), around 90-94(+), no rating today!

  • Same as prior note. Just great stuff. Give it some air and let'r rip. Remarkably consistent. Buying other recent vintages too in hopes they can match the '16. The '19 has even higher critical acclaim although we all know that doesn't necessarily mean it's better.

  • A terrific evening of 2016: Saffredi, Tignanello and Argentiera. The Saffredi was a closed second for me and number one for others. A terrific wine, full bodied and with sweet tannins. I was quite surprised how the three wines showed so young, only the Tignanello seeming too young. Of course no hurry to drink it but I will not make the mistake to wait too long as it’s so grat right now.

  • A couple of hours of air is key for this wine. Once that happens, it's beautifully balanced with rich dark fruits and a great beam of acidity making it quite good with food. A very slight roughness at the end of the finish may smooth out with another 5 years in the cellar. However, this is so tasty now, I'm not sure any remaining bottles will survive that long. Top notch stuff that crushes many Nape wines that are over $100.

  • Fantastic wine - tasted truly special when I opened it. Hoping the next couple bottles are even better with age.

  • Opened for 30 minutes, but not decanted, at a NYC Steakhouse. We had this alongside a 2015 Realm Falstaff, a 2007 Paolo Conterno Ginestra Riserva Barolo and a 2000 Chateau Gruaud Larose. Something has to come in last and this was it. Compared to my previous bottles, I was expecting much more, so despite the rating, I was disappointed. It just didn't seem as well balanced as the other wines. Not a bad wine, just in comparison, just not as good, it was the last one we finished, as everyone preferred the other wines.

  • A truly amazing young Saffredi out of a half bottle today. It really needed 1-2 hours to start to blossom. The bouquet convinces with dark cherries, peppermint, some red meat and bacon as well as some floral garrigue or lavender like notes. The palate is just overwhelming with pure intensity, power, fine but intense tannins. Amazingly enough it somehow keeps its balance due to the fresh acidity and therefore deserves this high rating. I guess, it should cellar at least 5 more years, before it reaches its first plateau of maturity. From thereon it should hold at least from another decade maybe more.

  • This wine is a big and bold Tuscany Bordeaux blend. It is rather tannic and closed if you don't give it a lot of air. I tried doing a Coravin taste and it took over an hour to be civilized. After that, I drank slowly over the next 2 days, first with Coravin plus 3 hour decant and it was fantastic. Day 3 it is beautiful with lovely smokey, dark fruit on the evolving complex nose and a mouth coating delicious flavor and a very long finish. It still needs time to develop the flavors that are somewhat wound up but this reminds me of a young Domaine de Chevalier though perhaps the terroir elements will evolve quite differently but that reminder is a very good thing (I love Domaine de Chevalier). I'd hold this for another several years, this is going somewhere very good. If you have a case, try a bottle but give it the longest decant possible. 93+ potential of 96 for me.

  • Dark. Floral nose. Black fruits, plum and balsamic. High acid. Medium body. Firm tannins. Needs long decant. Will hold remaining bottles a few years. Higher score likely down the road.

  • Thanks to my friend David m, who is a Italian aficionado, I got to know this wine. Despite being in its infancy the wine is excellent and complex. It needs a little more time to develop secondary notes and enter a multidimensional stage. But as of know it’s very French on the nose, the body is a touch bolder than most Italian wines, and the acidity tannins ratio will provide a long life to this wine...

    94+

  • I wish I had bought more of this wine. It drinks like something that cost twice as much. Agree with others that it needs a long decant. Bright in the glass, Bordeaux like, but with a bit of Sangiovese acidity.

  • Needs another 5 years

  • Young, but gave it 90 minute decant and it drank really well. Very Bordeaux but with an acidic edge.

  • My first bottle 2016 of this young Bordeaux blend from tuscany, as I read in some "fellow-CT-crowd" notes before, this needs a very decent decant, so popped this one three hours in advance, poured in two glasses and double decanted the rest,
very strong fragrance of juicy ripe cassis, plums, roasted almonds,
on the palate initially creamy sour cherry jam, cassis, lucious in a very good way, earthy and mineralic, pencil lead, smoky wet stones in the background, fullbodied, high ABV 14,5%, nevertheless velvety swallowing, very finesse like and multilayered, great long finish, very delicious from now on if decent decanted, reminds me of some higher class 2009 Bordeaux bottles, think this will evolve with dignity up to a decade++, **(**-*****), 93- 95(+) potential

  • Dinner at Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck. No detailed notes taken. Unfamiliar producer and label so did not know what to expect. Was bowled over by the quality of this wine. Bold, rich and generously fruited. Clearly from a warm vintage but yet was nicely balanced. Another “Super-Tuscan” to put on my radar screen.

  • Blind tasting the Saffredi 2016 vs 2017. Both wines are of high quality, not to talk about the amazing quality/price ratio. The 2016 is cool, fresh, precise, pure and with depth. Without decant not really approachable but so are the Sassicaia or many left bank 2016 Bordeauxs (think St. Estephe, St. Julien). The 2017 is a very hedonistic wine from a warmer vintage which offers layer upon layer of sexy, seductive aromas. Darker than the 2016 and with lots of nutty and burnt sugar aromas reminiscent of a Mouton from a hot year. Both wines are great but the 2016 mainly is a big promise whereas the 2017 is amazing to drink now.

TN: The aroma spectrum is quite broad with barnyard funk, leather, herbs, minerality and dark fruit. At first the herbal aromas are too prominent, even greenish notes and too much acidity are tainting the picture. With more time in the glass the wine shows its true soul with many layers of aromas, pure red berries, pure dark fruit and lots of terroir expression (earth, crushed rocks) as well as some pleasant barnyard aromas. This is highly precise, fresh and pure and with time very harmonious and melting. To reach its peak it will need a lot of time. I was at 90+ at first with the best moments at 95+ points.

Decanting: This needs a serious decant. I would go for at least 4 hours in the decanter. Better more.

  • 2016: Bourdeaux vs Tuscany: A big, complex wine, rich luxurious texture. Petit verdot accented aroma comes through, backed by a bright zesty cabernet and mineral merlot. First impression is simply 'wow'. A winner by any measure.

  • Perfumed floral notes, basket of mixed fresh berries leaning towards red. Fresh palate with a velvety texture but a lot of power behind. A slightly darker fruit profile on the palate. Once again almost unbeatable quality price ratio here, in my view, even surpassing the grand 2013 (scored 95 twice). Although I would need to see both next to each other for a definitive answer.

  • Sour cherry and black currant, violets, licorice and spice. A lovely nose. Fine grained tannin, a deep sweet fruit core and a good dose of acidity. Beautiful balance. A lot of wine for that price point.

  • Deep, dark purple-garnet, essentially opaque in color. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of dusty/earthy & floral notes, spices, cocoa, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium-full bodied, with very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, lush, ripe fruit flavors of sweet dark cherries, blackberries & plums with dark cocoa, spices, herbs, minerals & a hint of vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but should continue to develop further & merit a higher score with additional aging. An indicative blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Petit Verdot.

  • Winebar [1 Rosé, 3 Whts, & 8 Reds] from 08/09/19 + 4 Shared Bottles (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Dr. Tom, THANK you for sharing this GORGEOUS "Super Tuscan"! :)

    Supposedly 60% C.S, 30% Merlot, & 10% P.V.

N: Slightly closed; Smoky, toasty, earthy, chocolatey notes; Intensity lurking

P: LM body; RNDISH entry with very NICE, almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which, without even remotely losing contact with the init frt, seamlessly evolves into an unbelievably LONG, BALANCED finish with already an elegance & hints of swtness to the dusty tannins. This should REALLY blossom down the line! My EXC+/Exceptional-, the higher with time. 99 pts Suckling, 98 WA, & 93-96 (Galloni). [This vendor's $75.95 is now $4 < wine-searcher's current lowest!]

N: GORGEOUS melding of MANY aromas (in no particular order): Spice, flowers, pyrazines, minerals, choc, iron...

P: MF body; RNDISH entry with very NICE, almost swtish frt met by astringent pucker which, without losing contact with the init frt, seamlessly evolves into a VERY LONG, BALANCED finish with a bitter/swtness to the dusty tannins. A potentially *elegant* GEM that NEEDS through '22 (I'm guessing), then making its 15th... as a minimum. My EXC+/Exceptional-, the higher with time. 99 pts Suckling, 98 WA, & 93-96 (Galloni). • Decanted for two hours. The nose is absolute perfection, with dark, ripe cherry, leather, blackberry, granite, flower shop and freshly sliced plum. Sumptuous, polished tannins with a full body, and in an attempt to not seem overtly platitudinous, but this achieves exceptional balance. Designed to age for many years, with a chiseled backbone, and yet I am still loving how mesmerizing this is as of today. An astonishing palate, and an all encompassing nose. The finish carries on with so much echo and a little rose petal with tobacco. Just outside of Bolgheri, this Bordeaux blend is beyond riveting. Legendary. Drink 2023 -.

  • brief notes from a London tasting

Interesting wine with plenty of personality, but just an absolute raving bonkers RRPrice of £90. To me on the day £90 seems 50% over-priced. (Not all Fattoria Le Pupille wine's are this silly: their Poggio Argentato Toscana Bianco IGT is genuine value for money, £18 for an outstanding white wine.)

    C.....dense red, light body.

    N....great fruit, intense.

T....floury soft tannins, good length, lovely ripe fruit balanced with acidity, genuine quality, fins' off-dry. A Foodie style. Drink young, drink now.

VFM.....contemptuous, the £90 RRP a hilarious joke (if it was funny). Lovely wine but drinks like a £40 one.
