  • NYE Vino Fest (Atlanta, GA): Tasted at the annual 2023 New Years Eve Vino Fest in Atlanta. BYOB and guests were encouraged to bring wines with years ending with a 3. No formal notes, just scores. This bottle was decanted for sediment and poured immediately. Good but not great showing. Fun wine to kick off the evening! Brad - heavypourwine.com

  • Decanted directly before drinking. slightly red color with hints of brown. Little nose. From nose to finish a very elegant experience. Light bodied, but an extreme harmony, well balanced. Long finish. No signs of age, nor of youth. Drink now... but it will probably also last for 10-20 years.
Nice label with the Picasso painting.

  • Label was heavily stained and tattered. Mid-low shoulder fill. Cut the foil and had clear signs of seepage. With seepage could smell bouquet which was still lively and electric. Cork was saturated, broke in three pieces getting out. Didn’t have high hopes. Decanted to remove sediment. Color was amber-ruby. Drank immediately. Still had decent fruit, earth, light acid, light tannins. Definitely old school Bordeaux. Can’t believe there was still life in this off vintage 50 year old wine with all signs pointing to flaws. Tasted 2 hours later with fruit fading to leather, earth, and a mint explosion. Was an amazing experience.

  • Despite been a 2nd growth and upgrading to first growth on this vintage, and been a weak vintage. This is by far the best bottle I have from my last 2 tasting. Notes of mushroom, tea, forest floor, spices, toast, charr wood. At its last stage of drinking cycle. Drink up.

  • Blind. I was convinced this was 70s Napa perhaps Heitz Martha's given a distinct minty note. Lovely sweet mature plum and cherry with the aforementioned mint/herb throughout. Structure is resolved into the fruit.

  • Tuesday (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. The vaunted Picasso bottle. The minty notes on the nose actually had me going to old school, 1970s-era Napa cab, Heitz Martha's for example. And with the fruit still very fresh, this did not immediately come across as the typical weedy, green wines of the era. In a damning with faint praise sort of way, this is one of the better bottles of Mouton I've had.

  • First, the storage: Purchased on release at Zachy's in approximately 1976. Two years in an unairconditioned apartment that recent law school graduates live in while earning $16,500 a year. Then eight years in a rack in the basement with a very leaky door to the outside at your first house that you could afford only because your father loaned you the money for the down payment, then 27 years in a passive underground cellar of your second house until your wife insists that you have to build a real cellar in the basement because she is tired of having to move cases around on the floor just to find the wine that you want, then 10 years in a temperature-controlled cellar built by Chris Kravitz.

    Fill: Low Shoulder.

Cork: The first cork I have had that did not come out cleanly with a Durand. The top 80% of the cork came out in a crumble and looked like that dark brown crumbled chocolate you sometimes get on a cake. Half the rest made it out of the bottle with careful use of the Durand worm and the rest did a swan dive with a twist into the wine.

Decant: The wine has been lying at a slight angle in the display row in the cellar for a decade without moving, label up. Brought upstairs, put in an angled wine carrier at the same angle, cork removed, decanted through a fine screen to catch the crumbled cork into a "decanter" I got at K-Mart for $4.50, and then poured immediately into the glasses of waiting guests in the back yard.

Color: OMG - other notes say it was light in color. Not this bottle. As I decanted it, I noticed a slight browning in the stream, but in the bottle it was dark Bordeaux colored with no sign of bricking. The color was indistinguishable from the other four red wines we served - all at least 35 years younger.

Palate: Excellent. No sign of significant deterioration or other bad things that happen when Bordeaux gets old and tired. I would never had guessed 50 years old. I would have been surprised at 1982 and more likely would have guessed 1989 or 1990. Extremely smooth. Although the tannin was probably 95% resolved, there was still just a bit. There was red fruit on the nose but it was subdued on the palate. When I consider that my collection, and hence what I like to drink, leans heavily towards SQN, Saxum, and the cabs of Thomas Rivers Brown, subdued is probably a compliment to most of you. I have had some great Bordeaux over the years. 1989 Haut Brion, 1989 and 1990 Montrose, 2000 Latour and 1928 Margaux (at age 41) come to mind, and this was excellent. If it had more fruit or a bit more power, I would probably have scored it about 95. If I factor in the age, the storage, and the fill, this would get a 97.

Original cost - no sure, but definitely less that $10.

  • Dégustation de 30 millésimes de Mouton Rothschild

    1973

  • Purchased on release. Below shoulder fill but still a good bottle. Fruit is all gone and entirely tertiary notes. Tannins are completely dissolved. Bottle went belly up into harsh acidity after an hour, this was far past it’s prime and isn’t getting any better. Drink up.

  • Well, this was a surprise.

Cork slipped into the bottle (I'm out of practice with ancient wines) which necessitated a hasty double decant. Pop & pour would have been a better choice.

Aged appearance, but an absolutely delightful nose. Mature, but sharply delineated, with balsamic, smoke, cola and candied strawberries, leather and a bit of sea air. Complex and utterly compelling, not just for the vintage, but for any vintage.

Nice balance as always with these old Moutons. Delightful tang on the finish, initially a little short but fills out an hour or so after opening. Tannins pretty much gone.

Expected this to be a distant second to the 1975, but I prefer this. Vastly outperforms the vintage's reputation.

  • 20 Old Bordeaux grand cru classe - vertical (1955-1986) and horizontal semi blind wine tasting dinner (Fredriksberg): 1973 was Mouton's first year as 1. cru! Was it justified? Definitely. One of the 2 winners that evening. Still fruit, alive and complex but of course also tertiary notes. As the other winner, Latour 1973 (also rated at 98) has many many years left for further ageing.
We also tasted Mouton 1981 which was far from 1973, but still outstanding (I scored 95)

  • Mid-shoulder level. Pop and pour. Explosive nose with smoke, earth and tobacco. Palate was elegant and silky with resolved tannins, plums, earth, and still a little bit dark-fruits. Enjoyable and exciting!

  • Popped & poured. Garnet-coloured, this seemed to be still in the pink of health judging by the nose. Lots of tea-leaves, earth and a little lead. Again, tea-leaves, leather, damp-earth, and still a little bit dark-fruits on the palate. Doubt this will improve any further, but in a good place now to drink-up. Nice...

  • Mid-shoulder level.

  • Pop and pour. Wine was in temperature controlled cellar for 20 years, but not sure how it was stored from inception. The wine was flat without fruit with orange and brown color. The wine had its day and it is over. It does not matter how long one decants this wine and there could be some bottle and cellar variation, but from the start there was no hope.

  • it's not often that I find value on Mouton bottles. Even in great vintages sometimes I don't see it performing like the others, but, this bottle was beyond outstanding. Level on the shoulders. Impressive nose with little sign of oxidation surely on the tertiary side with leather, cedar, souce some dry red fruits but so "sexy". Impressive palate, far from oxidative signs, holding up nicely, great mid palate and a long long finish.

  • Decanted four hours, needed more to get balanced. Very smoothe and elegant despite its age. Surprisingly good, eith still tannins around. Good depth and long finish. Cliassical four being an old grand cru Bordeaux. Lots of cherry. Great wine. Time to drink. I was lucky as botlle still above the neck.

  • Decanted and served a few minutes later. Tasted blind, and everyone guessed mid to late 80s, so this thing is really holding up. All fruit is gone, leaving a nice, old Bordeaux-like flavor. 90 minutes after opening, this thing was toast. Drink immediately.

  • Drinking very well much better than expected. Would have guessed this to be a late 80s GC. Nice color with some orange/copper to it. Lots of leather, tobacco, classic notes. Little bit of red licorice. Pretty smooth overall and enjoyable.

  • Wow, I was positive this wine was going to a total dud, but it definitely shut up and played the hits. Agree in the previous comments that the nose is soft but this wine delivered in taste. Earthy earthy tones, with a brilliant brick red hue. Paired with a lamb roast, couscous in a lovely au jus, this hummed. Thoroughly impressed, would be tempted to purchase this vintage again given its market rates.

  • Bordeaux tasting 1948-2005. Very pale orange colour, cab dominated, warm sweetness, barn, hay, wet grass, smoke, cigarrbox and campfire on the nose. Sunburnt character, still a special wine with complexity but way past its peak and probably one of the weaker vintages for MR.

  • Mouton-Rothschild Tasting (Kronenschlösschen, Eltville): Certainly better than expected. Attractive nose of moss, damp earth, leather. On the palate a beguiling sweetness even if not terribly complicated. Nice alongside food.

  • The smoothness and flavor were still there 40 years after production. Nose had almost nothing left but it was still a delicious wine with a great taste. It's over the hill at this point but still very enjoyable. If you have it, drink it NOW.

  • 'Farewell Jason' Long Lunch (Hong Kong Wine Vaults, Aberdeen, Hong Kong): Faded but clean plum and damson colour. Nose is high piano note of phenolics..... just super complexity. Palate is thin and faded but still showing its former glory. Not much length or resonance but still a treat......thanks Steve!

  • The fourth bottle of my 1970-1979 collection, the first year they went PGCCA.

Condition of the bottle - dirty and damaged label ( mould on cork )
Level - lower neck / shoulder level, clearly stored too moist.
Heavy on the sediment, required some gentle filtering.
Nose - somewhat peppery, earth, coffee and tobacco.
Taste - same as above, still very nice flavour coming out of this one

Guess over the top and not much left, so enjoy this bottle now !

  • CWS Wine Dinner (Sea Goose): This wine also had a pretty low ullage. I might have been a little bit more impressed if this had not followed the stunning Rioja, but it did. Tasted like Bordeaux, showed some elegance, and was quite pleasant. However, it did not make my think of 1st growth especially. The fruit was still there, it was well balanced, and enjoyable. There just wasn't any extra oomph. Not sure if there ever was, but with a low fill bottle I will not pass judgement on '73 Mouton.

  • I looked for this wine to drink it again due to my Japanese friend said it is very good at this moment.

    True !!!

The color is so red and clear.

The nose is clean and beautiful, at once the cork removed, very fragrant, very elegant like a Burgundy "Gevrey-Chambertin" with a tiny scent of typical Mouton.

I must say the nose as good as Lafite and Ausone combined, clean and seductive.

Lovely texture, medium-bodied, good balance because I can hold it within my mouth as long as I want to. Delicious and charming indeed.

Aftertaste as like nothing, only the happiness of powerless. Not such any impact but absolutely great feeling. Full-fill my heart, a very very good performance at this moment.

I'm sure that it can go for another 12 years and I would like to drink it again in next 6 years when it wakes up next time.

    Dear Friends,

This bottle gives new attitude to my wine world. I finished my 6 bottles last 6-7 years because I think it can not go anywhere and I was wrong. If you have this wine, please taste it as soon as possible.

Don't believe in Parker's TN because this is not his type of wine.

" Trust Your Instinct and Come Feel The Truth."

Mouton 1973, it already makes my world a little bit more wider than ever.

    Drink now - 2020/2026............96/100..............

ps. Glad to have 1-2 bottles left in my cellar.

  • At first I wasn't sure if this was simply past it or flawed, but reading other peoples recent encounters with this same wine, I'm afraid to say that the bottle must have been flawed. Extremely animal on opening, which didn't blow off with time in the glass. Certainly some red berry and spice coming through, good intensity, good acidity, but an imbalanced current of barnyard swept it away. Odd that, with the disastrous condition of the cork, there weren't any oxidative notes, and no off cork taint. Sometimes you just get a weird bottle.

  • Wow! Nothing wrong with this one!
Light garnet colored with a nose that needed half an hour to get started but when it did it
offered espresso roast, cedar and old decadent spice: in other words what a mature Bordeaux should offer.
Light bodied but flavorful and intense, leaner than in better vintages but still finish was lingering!
The first vintage of Mouton as Premier Grand Cru with the Picasso label.
A very fine mature Bordeaux still at its plateau of maturity but don't wait much longer...

  • Being one of the worlds most famous Bourdeaux Chateaus, Mouton Rothschild has always been on my hoping-to-try-list. Now it happens that a friend of mine turns 40 this year, and he being a keen collector of Moutons, what else to open then the 1973 vintage!

The 1973 is particularly interesting, not only because it’s exactly 40 years old this year, but also because this was the year when Mouton was elevated from a second growth to a first growth classification. This was apparently a grueling business, taking a lot of time and effort to convince the authorities. Hopefully they had some time left over for winemaking!

The colour is a light healthy red, but with a fair amount of brow tint.

On the nose there is some dried figs and plums as well as a lot of dirty aromas. Dust, cabbage stew, forest floor and barnyard.

I am happy to say that the wine, even with all that age, still had some fruit left in it. I wouldn’t call it vibrant, but there were enough to save it from complete dryness. The acidity is alive and kicking, as with some many old wines that will be the last to fade. There is just a slight bit of astringency, and the tannins are very fine, almost powdery. The body is fragile, like that of an old man but the lenght of the taste lingers on well beyond that of the every day wine.

This is a wine well past it’s prime, but it has not given up completely, and it leaves me with a feeling of forgotten greatness.

  • A Magnum. Had with Christmas Dinner. Cork crumbled while opening and strained through muslim into 2 decanters. Not much on the nose to start but started opening up after a couple of hours at room temperature. Wine was almost veltvety, no harshness at all. A 'mature' taste but still very pleasant. Need to compare with a more recent example before I would recconmend purchasing. If you have a bottle then drink up quick.
The wine looks Tawny colored. It smells like Prune, Fig, Black currant (cassis), Forest floor, and Dust. The body is Medium/Full. The wine has Satin-like texture. The wine finishes Long.

  • Bought a case. Lost about 4 bottles in the case due to age. But the ones that were good were *really* good. Wine is a living thing, and this wine demonstrated that with layers in the nose, earth and beautiful tannins in the front; tobacco, leather, cashew, cinnamon all in the mid; and a finish that went on for ages. Not the best vintage of this producer, but a good showing none the less.

  • High neck fill, capsule in good condition. The aging cork was masterfully removed by Adrien with a waiter's corkscrew. Cloudy deep pink-red.

The wine survived very well. Nose of cedar, cigar, and smoke. An old unkempt humidor. No fruit left at all. A hint of tannin on an acidic frame, with cedar and mushroom. At 11.5% alcohol and no desire to impress with its might, this was a true claret.

Certainly beyond its prime, but a stunner given our low expectations (which included, prior to uncorking, discussion of who would get to pour the historic juice into the sink).

Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment

  • A truly historic wine, the first year they were added as a First Growth (and maybe the last to be added?) not to mention Picasso on the label.

The wine: The cork was difficult and we ended up straining, high neck fill and the cork was only 3/4 soaked, so it appeared to have battled the years OK. After filtered into a decanter, the wine was closed. Nothing on the nose (ok, a little alcohol), nothing at all on the palate, hmmm. So we decided to give it a little while and see what happened. Well, after about 30 min it actually started to develop a bouquet and some fruit on the palate. Light fruit, some smoke (which took over after about an hour open), pepper were all notable. The wine had a nice color to it with minimal bricking.

Overall, a wine I'm proud to have had an opportunity to be a part of. Is it a RP 100?--no. Is it an awesome wine?--yes.

  • Almost dead. But then again, we knew that going in as the cork was protruding out of the bottle. Pulled the cork and it was soaked all the way through. Nose of earth and leather. Light bodied wine with barely a touch of dried red fruits on the palate. Clipped finish. I imagine a bottle kept in good condition would be better than this and quite drinkable.

  • Guest brought this in and didn't even want it tonight. Staff tasted after the shift. Everyone thought it was tired and way past it's prime. Smelled better than it tasted and it didn't even smell that good! Smelled like roasting red peppers in a dust storm and tasted like those same peppers served on a cardboard box with prunes. It sounds disgusting, but it wasn't totally unpleasant. There was still something about drinking history that made it so much more appealing... especially for free!

50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 8 + Smaak / Afdronk: 12 + Algemeen / potentieel: 5 = 80/100

  • Bouquet of sun-tan lotion (cocoa butter), menthol, and black tea again, with still great palate intensity dominated by bright acids. This was surprisingly good in my book, with great length and tons of complexity of a very mature wine. It faded very quickly with air, but I thought it was terrific at first. Others liked it much less than me, but I am fan of old school, mature claret.

  • Brownish color. Mature, hard, and somewhat green, but not at all unpleasant. Delicate, angular wine that's clearly fading, but still some fruits that tend more towards red. High acid. Not bad.

  • I thought I'd post the TN just because a dear friend had a case that she never opened and she wanted to give me the bottle to decorate my wine room..............First lets get the TN out of the way. The wine was tasted like boxed wine that sat out in the sund for a week poured over an old redwood tree and drunk form an old women's shoe..............yes it was that bad. One of the worst wines I have ever had the peasure of tasting. The bottle clearly surpassed the juice. This bottle is famous and collectible as you know. The label was fashioned from Piccasso's Bacchanales series and he only released the painting to be used commercially until after his granddaughter's death. Another reason the bottle is sought after is the fact that this was the last ever commissioned and completed painting by Piccasso...............The last reason it is so collectible is this bottle represents the only change in the 1855 classification. Mouton was elevated to a first Growth in 1973 with possibly the worst bottle of Bdx ever. I believe the 1965 Vintage of Bdx was worse truthfully.

Lastly the Mouton's motto changed as well from `First I cannot be, second I do not deign to be, Mouton is. To in 1973, `First I am, second I was. Mouton doesn`t change

This wine is not fit for sauce. Well maybe on the dog's Alpo................

  • 6 times testing last year 2006, I rated this wine between 89 - 93 points.

From the only 1 best bottle :
-Light to medium ruby colour, look very nice. ( other 5 bottles were amber edge )
-Scents of clean Mouton, cedarwood, alcohol, redberry, watery, quite good and better than I expected ( 65/100 PP )
-Light to medium-bodied, a little bit high acidity, not complex but acceptable, Burgundy taste...Umm...I love this wine....
-Long finished more than 60 seconds was very impressed.

    Recommend :
-For everyone who has it, if it cames from the best cellar, please drink it now or within 2 years.
-This is one of the Classic Mouton and let see how the wine-maker worked it out in this poor vintage.
-Come feel the Glory....Drink the beautiful Label of 1st Growth History....

    Cheers,........

  • Annual holiday event (Columbus, OH): Scary brown color. Lighter tobacco and subtle dark fruit notes. Older, front-heavy palate and a caramelized finish. Lighter-bodied and with a somewhat hard edge, but not without charm. Better than expected, and would probably be very acceptable with food.

  • This bottle was a gift to a friend from her brother who stored them since release (he bought a case...). The cork was completely saturated and had mold on top (i.e. the bottle had leaked at one point) but came out surprisingly easily and in one piece. Almost no sediment (just a bit of sludge). Color was very pale light red with some orange hues. The nose was very light with hints of cedar and, surprisingly, sour cherries. On the palate the wine was very light with present but not piercing acidity and even a trace of fruit left (who would have thunk...). The finish was moderate but there (which all by itself was surprising). Blindly I might not have guessed Bordeaux (the nose was pointing in that direction but the palate was much softer, almost Burgundian). Over all the wine was (much) better than expected (my expectations for the label exceeded my expectations for the wine). At the right price ($30 for the a premium for the bottle) I would buy it.

  • This wine was losing the battle against the time; a light colour, small fruit, fresh acidity, vanilla, the wine misses the frame to keep sour, sweet and bitter together, on the decline.
