PnP Mature garnet red, yellow tinged, 4.5 Generous mature Nebbiolo, dried roses, tar, tobacco, sweet Slavonian cask, .. M-T, hA, m+B, dry, rounded, very well balanced, long finish. Complex. Drink now-onwards. Really in a fine place now

Medium deep brick red. Aromas of cherry jam, plum tarte, sandalwood, wet tarmac and violet. Medium body. Finely grained lively tannins. Blackcurrant acids and walnut bitterness. Palate of cherry, blackcurrant, truffle, nutmeg and baked earth. A mature, rustic and utterly well-balanced wine with delicate dark fruit, beautiful grippy acids and a moderately long mineral finish. Drink within 5-7 years. Tasted alongside Scavino, Bric del fiasco 1998 and the matched wine was generous, complex and modern in comparison.

This was such a delicious, mature Barolo more on the black fruit spectrum with authentic flavors of tar, licorice, bitter chocolate and a lovely floral lift. Not crunchy and complex but rather layered and savory with an enveloping finish and just the right amount of acidity underneath. Certainly a plug for how good a blended, high-production Barolo can be with age. Off the list at Lucciola.

It looked like a barolo in the glass, had that unique red hue of a nebbiolo or a Pinot Noir with age. There's a floral aroma and lots of tobacco on the palate. The tannins are finely knitted.

Classic barolo nose, but still fresh. Gorgeous rich, sweet fruit on the palate with a wee medicinal, tar edge on the finish. Juicy, refreshing acid. Long. Really very good.

Aroma of leather, earth, red cherry. Full body, high acid, potpourri, some liquorice, touch of tar and rose, gamey with a long tobacco finish. On the 2nd day, fig and raisins.

Amazingly aged barolo - love it! Not the best year in Piedmont, but I think this wine still has some aging potential in it. Excellent tannins provide a strong structure for the wine from the 'mouth entry' to the finish, which is long and velvety.
PnP. Drinking really well right now but has plenty of structure. Held strong throughout the evening. CT drinking window is too conservative - this probably has 3-4 more years easy. Very enjoyable.

This saw little air before we started drinking it, and that seemed to be fine. No sediment surprisingly.
This is drinking great, actually. Some menthol, licorice, cherry, floral and spice notes. The wine is silky and smooth, but at the same time there is some light tannin remaining. I wish I had a few more of these. They will drink well for quite a while.

Drinking beautifully now, needed all of the 4 hr decant. No sediment. Opened alongside 2016 Pio Barolo just for kicks. The 2016 was more approachable early, but with air, was soon and clearly surpassed in complexity and balance by this 2004. Mediterranean themed lamb shank dinner perfect pairing.

After two hours open in bottle, I'm finding a mix of tobacco with dried cherry and strawberry complemented by a dusting of autumnal spice and crushed roses. While silky and textural, there's a silty minerality here that adds gravitas, as a twang of citrus gives way to red berries and balsam herbs. This tapers off long yet nicely resolved, leaving a hint of grippy tannin, along with notes of worn leather and cedar. The fact is that the 2004 is still evolving and will continue to provide many years of positive evolution.

Similar notes to previous bottles. Very earthy, limestone and tar undertones, really wonderful to drink. Still has some dark fruit and hints of rose on the front. Wish I had 10 more instead of 3 more.

Unexpectedly found this uninventoried in the back my cellar tonight. Very youthful appearance, deep ruby core with slight garnet edges (I would have expected more garnet with browning). Highly aromatic nose showing drying rose petal, brown road tar, decaying pine needles, and wild, spicy red fruits. Fresh mouthfeel displaying dried raspberries, crushed cherries, sour cranberries, powdered cocoa, chewy old leather, and fresh forest floor. Tannin and acidity clearly lingering at the surface. Huge, very long finish…goes on for 45+ seconds. Most likely in the latter stages of development…seems, to me, to have plenty of life ahead. Drink now through 2025+. Impressive.

Three hour double decant. Drank a small glass. A deep ruby core fading to a deep garnet outer edge. Still an absolute baby and nowhere near reaching its zenith, which will come decades from now once the structural elements soften, it gains greater complexity, and develops those wonderful tertiary characteristics ages Barolo exhibit so brilliantly. Still a pleasure to drink in its youth with ripe black fruits, crushed wild berries, vanilla-infused black cherries, tar, pine needles, and aged balsamic.

Old world - nose of herb forest floor, mushroom, a touch of dried olive from the age and black plum. Fantastic and well integrated and aged fruits, herbs and olives. Beautiful if a touch evolved and one the way down.

Sweet ripe friendly aromas. Inviting and ready. Dry rose petals, bit of mint and pine-tree tar. Tannins are not aggressive. Not super complex on the palate. Drink now and over the next 5-7 years. This Barolo is house's signature wine. Uncompromisingly great quality with 80K bottles produced each year. 50-70% of grapes come from Serralunga, the remaining is divided among La Morra, Novello & Grinzane Cavour.
The balsamic, caramel, black tea, and slight berry sweetness seem to take over. Maybe starting to become oxidized. Could be better balanced. Medium weight, medium tannins. Kind of meh. Not really my style (and I do like Barolo).

Last bottle of 6 held and drank over time from 2010 onward. Beautiful violet, floral nose. The sandalwood and strawberry have faded for a deeper profile of black fruits, fig, leather and tar, mushrooms. Still focused with medium weight, medium acid, coating the mouth for a silky finish. Well integrated tannins and just a delightful Barolo. At its peak. Enjoy now with proper decant. 93+

Just a wonderful bottle that has continued to age beautifully. One bottle is better than the next. Dark fruit, cherry, currant, fig, blackberry hints combine with earthy, loamy, mushroom, tar, and Italian soil flavors to make for a beautiful example of a 16 year old Barolo

Perfectly aged, this was ready immediately after opening the bottle. The flavors were blended well - not as much of the typical perfume on the nose that a younger Barolo would display, but rich deep flavor on the palate. Wish I had a case of this.

Did not show as well as my last bottle last year. This bottle did not have the evolution and tannins were quite austere even after 90 minutes in a decanter. Perhaps needed more time. Solid overall.
Had this bottle since new. Opened tonight and decanted for 1-1/2-2 hrs. Some dark fruit on the nose. Had with steak. Tannins present; initially fairly well integrated but increased after about 3 1/2 hours. Not terrifically complex; mostly monochromatic dark fruit. Don’t believe there is much upside to waiting longer. Ready to drink… In good shape… Just not exciting.

decanted one hour. color appropriate, nose reticent until about hour two, then floral, rose, dark soil; med weight; this has become a decent bottle, fruit is ripe & pretty, balanced, structured; still youthful & quite dry, but a refined example.
Pio Cesare wine dinner. Dark ruby. My favourite wine of the evening. 15 years old and showing really well. Elegant, good concentration. Very classic Barolo. A cross between the power and concentration of the 2007 and the nuance and elegance of the 2010.

Pio Cesare Barolo 2004. On the nose, some licorice, soy, undergrowth, banana. On the palate this was quite elegant, with the usual licorice and herbaceous qualities, some soy, elegant with a clean mid palate. 93/100 it’s coming along very nicely.

This is an excellent blend of fruit from the communes of Novello (Ravera), La Morra, Serralunga d'Alba and Grinzane Cavour. Medium (+) ruby-garnet, with a tawny rim. Decanted for more than an hour and then consumed over several hours. The nose is clean, complex, medium (+) in intensity, with aromas of ripe black cherry, aromatic (bitter) herbs, licorice, forest floor, cigar box and very subtle sweet baking spices. This spends 30 months in large oak casks, including some in Franch oak barriques. The palate is dry, consistent with the nose, with medium (+) acidity, medium (+) tannins and high but unobtrusive alcohol (14%). Medium (+) flavor intensity and finish. This is a very classically-styled, very balanced Barolo, which is drinking beautifully now but can easily go several more years. WS 94; No. 6 of 2008.

Last bottle, sadly. Drinking beautifully, everything seems to line up perfectly now, though it has some life left in it. Cherries, a bit of spice, with a hint of tartness and earth. Popped, poured down a bit beyond the neck, and let sit for a few hours. Then drank over the course of 2-3 hours. Recently had some '06 Barolos that couldn't hold a candle to this bottle.

Big soft fruit upfront w sweet tannins. Not tight at all like previous tastings. The big berry / stewed fruit dominates even after an hour in the decanter and then finally started to develop earthy, mushroom and herbaceous notes. How was this Wine Spectators #6 wine of the year? It's good and enjoyable, but... Needs another 3 - 5 years in the bottle and several hours to decant.

This lower to mid-level Barolo has consistently impressed me. The 2004 is no exception. Probably in a perfect spot with classic black cherry and floral notes with polished tannins. I just ordered 3 bottles of the 2013 due to this experience. Great QPR in the Barolo world.

This wine is at an awkward stage of evolution. Very tannic. After 24 hours the tannins start to mellow a bit. The nose is pleasant red fruit and flowers. The palate is dark cherries, tar and touch of spice. But it’s a bit chunky and rustic feeling lacking finesse and subtlety.

Red center, red to orange rim. Nose initially closed, taking about an hour to open up. Sweet and salty, overcooked bacon, brandied cherries, classic tar and fur, violets. Smooth, damsons, some citrus, some alcohol, good acidity, moderate tannins, basil, creamy oak, very good finish of small red berries. Very good Barolo, drinking well now, will develop well for another 3 years.

The nose showed a mix of cedar with dried cherry, strawberry, and faded spice. Hints of dusty floral tones, earth and undergrowth came forward with time in the glass. On the palate, I found silky textures with notes of dried strawberry, medium tannin and a slight zing of acidity toward the close. The finish was long, giving me hope for this wine, as saturating red berry fruits seemed to radiate from every corner of the mouth, with mounting tannin, spice, and wood tones. As I took a breathe, inner florals and dried orange notes filled the senses, with grippy tannin reminding me that this is a young Barolo.
Could this be in an odd phase? I’m thinking so, because the bouquet and finish are outstanding, while on the palate it comes across as simple and restrained. I’m thinking the next bottle I open should be in about three to five years.

From 75cl, perfect, unusually long cork (2mm longer than a Chateau de Beaucastel cork I happened to find in the kitchen), decanted 90 minutes. Heavy vanilla oak, like a Vina Tondonia; crabby, mouth-puckering sloe-like tannins; raw leather; some thin bitter morello cherry action. Boy, does this need food (acceptable match with cepes risotto); on its own it is hard going. Perhaps better with a really fatty entrecôte? Did I really pay 47 EUR for THIS? 87-88(?)P

Perfect fill, perfect cork, beautifully pollished garnet wine in a well kept bottle... With that said, very aged and very sweet with firm tannins. Lacked acidity, lacked anything but sweet, flabby wine, punctuated by a whop of tannins on the exit (the best part..) I would say this one is way over the hill and gone...But ill try one more hoping that this was an off bottle (but me think not) DRINK

Last time I opened one was 2.5 years ago. This bottle showed much, much better! Unsure if it was the bottle or the additional age and the wine is in a different phase. Immediately upon opening, dried red fruit and earth. Tannin to fruit balance was way off and I had my concerns. 45 minutes later, wow. What an evolution. Nicely integrated red fruits and brambles with approachable pleasant tannins. However this wine evolved very quickly, almost burgundy like evolution. Within 2 hours the fruit was almost too faded. Drink now-7 years. I am glad I did not trade my last 2 bottles.

This is an excellent barolo, but it needs a lot more time in the cellar.
Poured through a Vinturi into a decanter to sit for 3 hours. The first glass was thin and very tannic. By the time that we drank the last glasses, about 3 hours later, it had blossomed into delightful tastes of fresh dark fruit with a touch of leather and earth. It It went well with crab cioppino.
Hold for at least 3-5 years, or decant it for at least 6-8 hours. This wine is far to young to be drinking now.

With some 300 reviews already entered, I'd like to thank my fellow winos for doing all the heavy lifting as far as writing a formal note. The wine is certainly still an adolescent, though the potential in its genes is apparent and it makes for a really easy to drink, one-whole-bottle-alone-on-a-Friday-night kinda wine. 5+11+17+9= 92, with a point or two upside potential.

This is why I have a wine cellar. We have probably held this in the cellar for 8 years or more. It was a great bottle of wine and is drinking well now. Shared it with my beautiful wife. T-Bone steak, grilled asperagus and caprese salad.
The wine really opened up as it warmed from cellar temperature. At about 40 minutes there were great raspberry and strawberry notes. We finished the entire bottle over a two hour conversation. Sublime!

Coming from the Pira Marenca '04, the relative levels of fruit (raspberry/strawberry) and toasty oak are approximately the same here, only one size smaller and a bit more earthy. Smooth, yummy and easy-drinking style with decent grip and not too much of make-up. We just gave it a quick turn in the decanter, no need for longer airing in our opinion. Went really well with the T-bone. Could go for several years more if you want the fully mature notes.

Last of my bottles. Decanted 4 hours before pouring. Typical Barolo cherry, earthy flavor profile. Tannins very much under control after 11+ years. Paired perfectly with pork shank Osso Bucco, Risotto Milanese, roasted Romanesco and rainbow carrots. Guests drinking the Pio for the first time were highly impressed with the wine.... and the food pairing!!
Deep, gorgeous wine that took a while out of the bottle to tame its tannins, then really hit the ground running along with a dinner of braised pork shank at GHR NY. Seems like it has several good years ahead of it. Decanted for at least an hour. Would definitely purchase more.

Drank at CT Seattle wine group dinner at Ponti, from magnum. Popped at the event and wine was still quite young, aromatic but closed, a little overly woody. 90 minutes split between a couple decanters and it opened up very nicely. What to say about Pio Cesare? It's TEXTBOOK Barolo in aromas, tastes, weight etc, a little more made in the winery than many of the fancier labels and quite right down the middle but pleasurable to a variety of palates, drinks nicely a year or 30 years old and everywhere in between, a reasonable value.

Light/medium garnet red. Piercing red raspberry on the nose. Gripping tannins with a bit of a green vegetal note, dried rose petals, barely-ripe raspberries, dried strawberries, and a bit of white pepper on the finish. After it opens up, there is a strange and very delicious coconut element at the mid-palate that really lingers. The dried fruit and floral potpourri dominates the lengthy finish. Very nice.

I double-decanted this about 4 hours before dinner with friends at a new Italian restaurant in Ithaca, NY (Gola Oesteria; highly recommended). In the glass, this was dark and rich; more so than I expected. Perhaps owing to the dim lighting in the dining room? In any case, the nose revealed crushed dark fruit, cedar (or some such fragrant woodiness). The palate was massive, with crushed fruit, blackberry, hints of earth, licorice, and a subtle floral fragrance. The tannins were chewy. This needs more time. It was way too soon to open; however, immensely enjoyable. 93 pts now, with great upside in 5-10 years. Hold.

Bouquet complexe de champignons sauvages, fruits secs (pruneau) et terre humide. L’attaque est puissante, sur une structure montrant encore sa jeunesse. Beaucoup d’élégance en milieu de bouche. Decanted for 2 hrs Colour:A darker almost ruby red. Atypical of Nebbiolos but some orange at rim Nose:bacon fat, red plums, somewhat muted Taste:rather stiff tannins are holding back some of the fruit. More leather notes on the taste than the nose. A bit short on the finish.
Not one of the better wines from this producer. May need more time in the bottle.

Holy bottle variation. I've really enjoyed this before but this bottle, while not obviously flawed, was just muted and sad. It really just came across as an echo of its former self and while not terrible, it was pretty boring with generic red fruit, light tannin & acidity, which almost made it seem like a past its prime pinot. I think this was just a bad bottle, but I can't peg exactly what happened.
Well balanced. Drinking really well right now. Lots of fruit and little tannins. This wine seems much better then a bottle I drank a couple of years ago. Possible wide bottle variation.

I've imbibed the Pio Cesare Barolo (03, 04, & 05) on three occasions and I've yet to pick up a fragrance or anything on the palate that tells me its from Barolo, or that it's even a nebbiolo wine. On the nose I get a touch of earth and tobacco but there's nothing that says nebbiolo; no tar, no roses. Where are my flowers, Barolo? I would challenge the Master Sommeliers of the world to identify this blind as a nebbiolo wine. If I hadn't had the same experience with each Pio Barolo I've tasted I would reserve my judgement and not score this thinking this wine may be closed for business at the moment but there's a track record here. That being said and my ranting aside, this should drink well as a red wine through 2017. Perhaps by then the roses will bloom.

Really nice - classic Nebbiolo. Moderate tannin, dark fruit, licorice, leather, minerals, spice. Opened nicely after a 45min decant. Drinking well now.

Nothing bad about this bottle but it was relatively simple. A food wine. Several hour decant...perhaps too long? Unsure why WS gave it such high accolades.

Decanted for about an hour. Really opened up nicely, deep notes of dark fruit, and cherry with hints of tobacco and leather. Long finish with soft integrated flinty tannins and alcohol. I am not certain this wine will last through 2022 as suggested. I think it is drinking well now. If you have a lot of this in the cellar, start drinking it now and carefully watch how it ages. A great wine now.

This took 3 days to come round, but it was worth the wait.
Day 1: Popped and poured. Very tight, obviously needs to open up. Glimpses of dried rose at the end of the palate and dried spice (nutmeg?). One dimensional though; and if I'm honest, disappointing. Cork placed back in the bottle.
Day 2: Growing a little bit more expressive, yet remains tightly coiled. Cherry liqueur nose. Pine needles coming through along with some nice minerality. Vanilla oak and strangely, Cola? 92+ at this stage.
Day 3: Much better. Palate has gained some weight. Old leather, dark tobacco, dried red roses, clove/star anise. Less mineral than previously, but it's lengthened out and become more 'complete'. Tannins are well and truly present, probably another 10 years before this peaks. Tar on the finish. Really enjoyable, old school style Barolo. I don't think I'll touch another until 2020.
94+

CORAVIN ACCESS #1. Aromatic nose of robust red fruit, some sweet red berries, herbs, roasted meat, fresh road tar and anise. The palate shows a lot of life. Nice core of red fruit, minerals, violets, some earth and rusty nail elements. Moderate body and sporting a little heat on the back end. Textbook Barolo done very well. Elegance and Old World, rustic and quite complex. Still needs some time in bottle - some austerity on the finish.

Taste: Fuller bodied with high acidity and chewy tannins. There is a coarseness to the tannins right now and the structure is youthful. Though the structure is on the obtrusive side, there is a succulent-ness with sweet red cherries, roses, red berries, tar, and roasted herbs.
Overall: This showed extremely well on the nose and it certainly feels like it can grow. There is a lot to like about it already and it would be interesting to see where this goes.

Still rather tannic. Any fruit that was present was in the background. Opened up a bit after decanting, but still seemed tight to me. Better with food than without (pork chop and root vegetables). Hold. Could (should?) improve with more time.

91 pts

Think I'm giving up on Barolo's as they don't seem to suit my palate and rather spend my dollar elsewhere. Maybe I've been unlucky on the few bottle's I've tried but this one had odd nose - almost a bit of petrol. Palate was too dry with not enough fruit to balance. Maybe corked but don't think so. Wife and I maybe finished half a bottle or so which means neither of us liked it. I'd probably give this a 85 but since I'm a serious outlier I won't officially score.

Double decanted for about 2 hours. Smooth and drinking very well now. Most at the tasting did not identify as Northern Italian. Good fruit and acidity, tannins fully integrated. Will likely last another 10 years but unlikely to improve.

This seemed well-composed and certainly like it has lots of time ahead of it. Haven't had too much Barolo, but it didn't seem all that expressive or soulful. Nice to drink, to be sure.

Great ruby red color. Aromatic out of the bottle. Wonderful aged quality to the aroma, especially after a decant. Smokey and tannic. I like it but needs another couple years to fully integrate the tannins. I decanted this one for 2.5 hours. Overall enjoyable.

Had this wine at a fancy steak restaurant. The steak was not much to write home about, but this wine was fabulous. We let it open in decanters for about 2 hours as we delved into a Napa Cab and became impatient with the slow service. For this wine this turned out to be not such a bad trade-off. The nose was big and evolved from bright strawberry and a little bit of a funky barrique, followed by some smokiness and a caramel/vanilla tune, then moved on to cinnamon and spice overtones, which led to a minerality of gravelly limestone, and finally settled on a deep rich cherry as I finished off the glass. I was glad that so many people got to share this excellent wine I selected for the table, but sad that my share of the spoils was only one glass.

Initial nose with port but the palate was quite tight The port sense settled down and eventually some fruit emerged along with some balance This tasted its age but could not tell if waiting longer would be of benefit

Showing better than the last one I had a few years ago. Again, it goes to show how much difference it makes to drink these further along in their development. This was delicate and expressive, lovely floral tones, and suculent on the palate - pretty captivating. Showing very well now but likely better still with a few more years of bottle age. This is nowhere near to beginning to fade.

Decanted for 2 hours but was better after 4. Silky medium body with nice fruit and balanced acidity. This was better on night 2 where it gained some weight and length. Good now but better in a year or 2+

I couldn't help but open another bottle of this beauty, which is exactly at a maturity level that I love, and likely to stay for a good few years. Red roses color starting to fade away just a bit, giving a beautiful transparency to it, the nose is sublime with the right presence of rose, red berries, autumnal leaves and wet earth which lift itself to a wet stone mineral touch. That is exactly what gave me the love for wine; when the nature seem to meet and mingle in the glass... and to add just a bit more charm it even displays the right amount of spice/pepper and on the palate the healthy tannin suggest that it will keep this good shape for a while. Medium body(I don't even understand how I could have loved the full body ones many years ago...) and uplifting just like a beautiful soprano voice, which hangs in your ears, the back taste lingers on and on... wow viva Barolo~~
Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of pepper, spice box, berries and raspberries. Flavors of berries, cherries and raspberries. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold.

Really Good. Dark ruby red color to the rim. Medium bodied. This has the typical tar & roses profile, with a slight emphasis on the roses with the tarry aspects adding the structure. Not a full throttle powerhouse, but more suave, albeit with slight drying tannins on the finish. Overall, a very good wine that paired perfectly with a wide array of Northern Italian food. Decanted for a little bit, but it would have been fine straight out of the bottle.

My last bottle of this superb Barolo. Served to out of town guests. No formal notes taken. Drinking exceptionally well, but structured to age for decades. Loads of complexity. Silky texture. Focused acidity. Wonderful wine.

Gott sei Dank hat diese Flasche gefunkt ! Klasse Farbe , leicht ins rotbraun gehend.

Very good wine... but does not provide the expected experience. Taste, like the color, is a bit short on depth and density. Perhaps the short time in the decanter is to blame? Have one more left.

Marquis Philips Integrity vertical (Sarah & Randy's): Dusty garnet color featuring notes of rose petals, tar and dusty red currants. Dusty, sweet tannins with flavors of cherries, florals and red currants, with a dusty note on the finish. Slightly austere through the finish.

Very fresh and crisp. First pour looked more like a pinot noir. Slight browning around the edges. Tasted rainier cherries, tobacco, plums with a little tartness. I did not get tar, balsamic as in other barolos. Not earthy. Tannins were integrated and soft. Very rounded mouthful. Acidity was there. Very pleasant and would recommend.

Nose of fresh pipe tobacco and a hint of black licorice. Palate is full of tar, crushed rocks and slight bit of fresh cut rose. Quick finish for a Barolo, but it did pair well with my homemade penne amatriciana.

Not going to score this as it was an unplanned grab from the cellar during a raucous dinner party so no time to decant or really even contemplate. This followed two Brunello's and the difference was apparent. The Barolo had more floral notes that made it a nice contrast but it was my only bottle and wish I had more time to follow it but oh well. Was drinking well and nice and balanced with the awesome Italian meal prepared by my wife. Salute!

An excellent Barolo, less powerful but more elegant compared to the 2006 Renato Ratti Marcenasco I had a week ago. Medium garnet color. Elegant and typical nose of red cherry, florals (rose and violet), forrest floor and stony minerality. Medium-bodied with soft tannins, perfect balance and bright fruit. Long aftertaste. Absolutely approachable with a long life ahead.

Ok, I call this the Lazarus bottle. I was very upset with the last bottle and was instructed that it could have been a victim of TCA.... Well I went on line and from the wikipedia article, you can reverse TCA by placing wine in a bowl and place plastic wrap in the bowl. The TCA is bound to the plastic wrap an the wine is no longer corked. This bottle was lightly corked, did the above and the wine was as remembered... I couldn't believe the transformation. The wine was of normal viscosity with a nose of leather, herbs and tobacco. dark fruit on the palate with strong tannins that opened up for a nice finish. Prior to cellophane treatment: stale funky nose, thin acidic and closed!

Tasted blind, but recognizable immediately as a Nebbiolo. Floral bouquet displaying cherry, raspberry and rose. The palate shows medium plus acidity and light, silky tannins. Well integrated with a long finish. Drinking very well right now, and feels like it can continue to improve and gain complexity.

Been drinking this for the past three years and it has finally caught up with what was always a lovely nose of roses, spice, smoke. Orange on the rim. I wouldn't call this dense, but medium in body with a palate of strawberries, coffee and touch of chocolate. Tannins there, but fruit is integrated and finishes longer each year. Drinking window is open -- did a 2-hour decant-- but worth more time to see what's in store.

Still thick and young with very dense fruit. Sweet, forward and I have to say very pleasurable. Not what you would expect from a Barolo, but there is pleasure to be had here if one were inclined to open now. Time will of course reward. This will go for years.

Appearance: Bright and clear, medium ruby, with paler rims and legs Nose: Clean, medium intensity and developing aromas of perfume, iris, cranberry, black cherries, cloves, coffee and cedar. Palate: Dry, with medium and refreshing acidity, this wine is of medium tannin, medium (+) alcohol and medium bodied, with medium intensity flavors of cranberry, black cherries, nutmeg, cedar and strawberry, finishing with a medium length. Conclusion: Very good quality Barolo with an all-round and balanced structure, showing reasonably intense and fairly complex nose, developing maturity characters. The palate is refreshing, but a bit warming, with reasonably intense flavors though relatively less complex. Finishing with a reasonable length, this wine is ready to drink now though can further age for another 4-6 years.

Opened at 9am, slow-O till 3p, aerated to decanter, served at 7p, at cellar temp. The extended airtime really did this a world of good. Fully expressive, with roses, cherries, blackberries and oak. Full bodied, cool acids and a lengthy, detailed finish. Tannins at the very beginning of their integration; drying, but fine. I really didn't have very high hopes for this, having been let down with other vintages (normale), but this 04 is a keeper. Drink thru 2019, recommended
Brick tint. Nose of black cherry, smoke, mint, & dust. Lovely palate of ripe cherry, strawberry, cola, minerals, & licorice. Prodigious length. Refreshing acidity that keeps you reaching for the glass. Very youthful tannins that will ensure a long life in the cellar. Wish I had cases of this wonderful wine. Only 1 bottle left.

Needs more time to integrate. Opened and decanted for 4 hours. Saved a glass to retry tomorrow. Wait 2 -4 years before opening the next one. Day 2: Nose has blackberries and some dusty earth. The attack is pronounced rose flavor followed by blackberry fruit and a tannic finish. This has improved from yesterday, but clearly has a long life ahead of it. I'll still wait before opening another.

Great Barolo region terror in this vintage. Darker purple and medium in body. Soft mouth feel and well integrated. Very pronounced dark fruit with floral overtones.

Really enjoyed this, but don't pop if you don't have a few hours to kill on the decant. Drank this over five hours out of a decanter. At first, pretty tight, not showing much, but about two hours in this really began to hit its stride. Nose of leather, tobacco, earth. On the palate strawberry, metallic mineral elements, hint of licorice, smooth and balanced tannins with a length but slightly drying finish. Good stuff, but needs its time.

Decanted for two hours before drinking with braciole. Great pairing with the food. Aroma of leather, coffee and subtle dark fruits. Nice plum and blackberry flavors, with some drying tannins on the finish. This still has plenty of time left, but it is enjoyable right now. Popped, decanted, and poured a small glass, then decided we were done with wine for the night. Pulled it out of the fridge the next night and let it warm up to room temp for two hours. Very tannic and dry on the first night. 24 hours really helped, but it needs at least two more years. Tannins smoothed out, but still rough - big wine, good flavors - tastes and smells of red berries.

Powerful berry nose with floral notes, and a robust, tannin-infused palate; this wine will take what you throw at it; luscious flowery base nose comes to fore after full aereation; smooth and deep, and a wonderful food wine (food cloaks the dry tannic finish that is noticeable on the finish without food). 50/5/13/17/8

From a 375. Great silky texture. Very nice aromas of red and dark fruit mixed with green olives. Palate not quite on par with the nose. Cherry with dark fruits in the background and a hint of black licorice. Fairly light-bodied for a barolo, almost reminiscent of a pinot. Enjoyable.

Notes from day 2. Dark red to purple in color. Nose of dried cherry, black plum, fresh violets, sandlewood. Palate of cherry, black plum, sandlewood, tobacco, some dry earth, and sweet oak/tannin on the end. The tannins are still very present on day 2 and make up the majority of the finish that is above average in length. Good balance overall, but lots of oak present in this wine. Survey of Italy (Our House (2033 Brandywine St., Philadelphia)): This brings the goods. Rustic, earthy, spicy dense and concentrated. This is so young and almost painfully fresh for a wine that is now almost 6 years old. Solid fruit concentration on the palate with nice secondary development of earth and leather. ok people. listen up. you cannot pop this for another 5 years. AT LEAST. had 4, so popped 1. had after 1989 paolo scavino cannubi barolo, 1995 paolo scavino barolo (single vineyard), 2001 damilano cannubi barolo. this simply was NOT ready. INFANT! muted nose after a 3hr decant! definitely had the tannins and some fruit to age, BUT is not balanced and well integrated right now. this is not built to go 20 yrs, BUT give it 5 more years and i think it will come together. hopefully. mushrooms, very spicey, tar and a nice nice long finish. got good general qualities for a few years to come, but not too many. 2015. max.

Dark-ish Red, semi-clear. Popped and poured at home, so glass decanted. Smelled and tasted over an hour as it continued to open. Medium weight, but lots of flavor. Earth, olive, and leather, to a cherry-cola finish, that lasts a good 30+ seconds. Tried with Dried Italian Salami, which paired well, and brought out several of the darker flavors. Did not pair as well with smoke trout appetizer. Roasted Salmon and Potatoes, were a near perfect pairing. Will likely come back and post Night 2 thoughts on this wine. A little expensive for the profile, but this is only my second Barolo experience. Well worth a try for this 4th generation historic producer. (#6 on the 2008 Wine Spectator List at 94 Pts).

(At friends’ Christmas Party - Barolo night). First impression is toasty oak, cherries, jam and berries. Nice and dark red with velvety and round tannins. Very New World style and not shy on the oak at all. Nice finish and quite juicy. This Barolo could use a couple more years to harmonize. Quite enjoyable and some what of an antithesis to the rest of the '04 vintage, which was less forward in general. Drink 2012 - .

Beautiful translucent ruby. Recalcitrant nose, showing earth, green olive, cherry. Despite being decanted and consumed over 10 hours the wine refused to blossom. Red fruits dominated the mid-palate, along with mushroom, toothpaste spearmint, licorice. The tannins are serious but elegant ("silky"), appearing with great force on the back-end. Would be interested to taste in 10 years or so. By all means, hold this one.

The color was a beautiful deep red and led me to expect more than I received on the nose. There was a mix of red and black fruit that I couldn't quite separate, spices, and some earthiness. The tannins hit my palate like a truck, but some of that is probably the result of the smoother, more supple wine that preceded this one (David Arthur). Regardless, the tannins were well balanced with the acid and the earth and fruit still shone through. A hint of licorice (or menthol?) as well. The finish was short and very very clean. I enjoyed the wine, but I will have to lose the other bottle for 5 or 10 years. (4+13+17+8)

Very similar to the previous bottle we enjoyed back in June. Based on that note, the only difference this time around was perhaps a little less earth on this one but a little more body and texture on the palate. Same score as before. (93)

Drank from 375 ml. A little tannic out of the bottle but only about 20 minutes in the glass was needed to soften it right up. Nose of dark red fruit, some earth, mushrooms and leaves. The aromas seemed to fill the air. First sip yielded abundance of cherry fruit, mushrooms and flowers. Nice bite on the finish, which lasted 20 seconds. I have 4 more splits and one 750, but I don't think I need to stage these out. Only 6 months ago, I thought these needed a few more years. With a good meal, they're coming out!

Very very very nice Barolo. Awesome spice, deep florals, and black cherry on the nose. Cigar wrapper spice, black cherry, and some road tar in the background. Pretty much stunning. Nice now, but ten, fifteen, years down the road this could bring a man to his knees.

Utter vinfanticide but what pleasure. Incredible depth of fruit on the nose - deep, dark cherry, tar, roses - all those classic Barolo notes. In the mouth what hedonism. Fantastic tannins - teeth gripping but working with the fruit to deliver an amazingly complex and alluring wine that screams out "I will kick arse in 10 years time". Amazing depth and amazing promise. See you in 10 years.

Deep violet red color with earthy tobacco and floral scents wrapped around a dark fruit core. Good acidity, with nice fruit and complexity from firm tannins. Finishes clean and lively. Great with food and nice on its own as well. This is on par with the excellent Podere Ruggeri Corsini Barolo I had a couple weeks ago. It has perhaps a touch more fruit but it is also slightly more expensive.

This is a top 100 wine? More like a serviceable $20 Chianti. Acidity, limited fruit, very light ... not what you expect from Barolo. I decanted for 30 mins to see if that would help it open up, but it didn't. :(

Beautiful wine that will only get better. Probably needs another year...maybe two...to reach its full potential. Lots of mocha powder and licorice on the palate. Just enough fruit to make the wine enjoyable.Lots of wood on the nose. Great Wine!

Nostrils: very rich and delicious with supple red fruits, some ripe plum and floral undertones Tongue: extremely lush on the palate; delicious red fruit; black tea; sassafras root. When paired with rare Sirloin Marsala this wine truly began to sing. Beautiful flavors of blueberry and vanilla seemed to come out of nowhere and overwhelm the palate.
Overall: this was a fantastic wine that will probably mellow and get better with age. 92+

Strawberry and Floral nose. Great mount feel with nice tannins but not overly tart for this young wine. Opened and poured at our favorite Italian place for our anniversary. This has the potential to to reach the mid 90's in a few more years. Drink now and enjoy or hold and enjoy even more.

Shared w L--still very young, the lovely ruby red color is giving deep red fruits w spice over leather after 2.5 hours aeration--tannins still too prominent, but this promises to reveal degrees of sumptuousness as it evolves across the years.

A nice showing from an exceptional house. This wine was paired with portobello mushrooms soaked in a garlic, butter, and green onion sauce; grilled steak fillet; risotto, and a vegetable pasta. The nose showed rich, succulent fruit with a nice hint of vanilla and earthy spices. A nice long and restrained finish on the palate revealed the smae nuances experienced on the nose. This wine was still very young and ripe, and will only get better with a few more years in the bottle. A must buy for any fan of barolo wines.

Light cherry red appearance with brown edges. Nose of plum, licorice and leather. A bit of a smoky taste, along with dark dried fruit and leather. Finish is somewhat dry with a good amount of tannins. Overall, a bold and complex wine that is enjoyable to drink with dark fruit flavors.

I must have had a different wine to everyone else here - the one I tasted was simply oak and vanilla and then more vanilla and more oak. It was somewhat pleasant but barolo would have been my 10th guess (maybe)

Directly out of bottle to glass, gave up very little on the nose, very tannic, some deep red fruit, a little herbaceous and with a fair bit of alcohol on the palate. Deep ruby red. After 20 minutes, the green notes disappeared. After 60 minutes, the nose improved with lead pencil, dark red fruit. After 90 minutes, the nose really began to come out. Mouthfilling red fruit, floral and mineral notes, velvety tannins, with a little heat. 45s finish. It certainly needs about 3 to 5 years but will be terrific then.

very good indeed. medium dark, beautiful nose of oak, vanilla, red berries, high pitched fresh tannin. I had decanted for a couple of hours but wasn't enough to tone down the oaky character which I don't like so much. The next evening was much better letting the way for beautiful structure of red berries, fresh tannin, beautiful acidity and mineral. I will love this in a few years.

Very good but extremely young. nose of sweet bubblegum, vanilla, strawberries and flowers. Good body (hard to poinpoint the taste) with strong creamy tannic finish. This is in the 90-91 range or even better but it is so young that it is hard to judge, needs 5 years at least.

Dark reddish cherry. Very pretty aroma of flowers and tart cherry. Beautiful flavors or tar, sour dark fruit, and flowers caress the palate.....and new oak. Definately modern in style but i amd hoping the oak will intergrate over time because this has a lot of time left. Tannins are quite persistant. Hold off if you can for 3-5 years

Youthful aromas of fresh red fruits, minerals and flowers (roses and violets). Approachable for a Barolo of this age, with huge potential for further development, thanks to its perfect structure. Gradually opening-up and gaining weight with aeration. Best from 2013.

This is an opulent, layered wine, delivering a a generous dose of dark fruit and sweet toasted oak. With an elegant and restrained style, it is complex, deep, and clear, with a long and persistent finish. Much too young but already revealing its elegance, this is a memorable wine at a reasonable price (at least until it was inluced in the WS top-10 list). From 2012 until 2024.

Popped, decanted, poured --- then sipped over 90 min. VERY tight at first, still tight after one hour, started to opened up just as we finished the bottle. This could use about 3 to five years in the cellar. Great potential! Berries and floral on the nose, light clear burgandy-pinot color, chewy tannins, lots and lots of flavor on the finish - even the very first sip lasted forever. 91 plus! with lots of potential. WS rates this #6 overall for 2008 with 96 points! JM must have really treated this right after opening, to get that great of a taste! I will get back to you in 2011-2013 to report on my second, third and fourth bottles.

Sampling 2004 Barolo, Part 1: This stuck out like a sore thumb compared to everything else on the table, with its oaky nose of sweet toasty mocha, cherry and rosewater. Tastes of sweet cherry fruit and raspberry ganache, turning almost entirely to sweet toasted oak and mocha on the midpalate and finish. Very firm yet sophisticated, silky tannins. Some great material here that seems to have been sullied with too much NFO. Pass.

Color: garnet, pale for a red
On the nose: chocolate, cherry, crushed red fruit, stewed red fruit, caramel, earth, leather, blackberry, menthol or eucalyptus, a little smoke
On the palate: very complex, not sweet but the flavors are very berry-like if that makes sense, still has tannins, very smooth
Overall this was very nice. Would pare well with a variety of foods. Heavier foods would go well with it. Would purchase again.

The educated guess was 2nd growth Bordeaux. Likely St. Julien. Wow, were we wrong.
Rich red fruit and cassis, tobacco, graphite on a beautifully balanced palate.

Hold.

Wines At Our Table; Week of March 1, 2015; 2/23/2015-3/1/2015: Dark red brick color with complex, and expressive blackberry, dried rose, tar, mushroom aromas. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, well balanced and focused with a silken texture and chewy tannins with red fruit, sweet spice, and leather flavors and a bit of minerality. Long finish. The wine was aged in French oak casks (70%) and smaller French oak barrels (30%) 14% alcohol

Colour:A darker almost ruby red. Atypical of Nebbiolos but some orange at rim
Nose:bacon fat, red plums, somewhat muted
Taste:rather stiff tannins are holding back some of the fruit.

94+

Aromatic nose of robust red fruit, some sweet red berries, herbs, roasted meat, fresh road tar and anise.
The palate shows a lot of life. Nice core of red fruit, minerals, violets, some earth and rusty nail elements. Moderate body and sporting a little heat on the back end.
Textbook Barolo done very well. Elegance and Old World, rustic and quite complex. Still needs some time in bottle - some austerity on the finish.

Chicago Italian Lovers round 12- 04 Nebbiolo Blind (Domaine Wine Storage, Chicago IL): Nose: There is a brighter quality to the fruit with an attractive red fruit core that leans into red berries, sweet red cherries, menthol, roses, violets, tar, and some roasted herbs. The nose is well balanced with a perfumed nature to it as well.

Nose: Clean, medium intensity and developing aromas of perfume, iris, cranberry, black cherries, cloves, coffee and cedar.

A classic Barolo that has to be taken with food. Luckily it was a North Italian Restaurant (In HK !) and so it went really well.
A lovely complex rich taste with great depth and tones

On the palate strawberry, metallic mineral elements, hint of licorice, smooth and balanced tannins with a length but slightly drying finish. Good stuff, but needs its time.

Anniversbirthday Dinner; 11/13/2009-11/14/2009 (Chef Luis): This was infanticide, but that's why I bought two bottles! Even after an hour in the decanter, it was very tight. (4+13+17+8)

Forgive the lack of specifics as it has been a couple weeks for this entry. I really remember only the score given and that this was just a beautiful wine though fairly young and tight. Worth buying a few bottles.

I had decanted for a couple of hours but wasn't enough to tone down the oaky character which I don't like
so much. The next evening was much better letting the way for beautiful structure of red berries, fresh tannin,
beautiful acidity and mineral.

Great Barolo, Dark in color, Aromas of Strawberry, Vanilla, earth, and some Caramel notes. Soft ripe tannins, and a lingering finish. This wine is a Baby. Allow several more years for this to reach its full potential. (Best from 2012-2025) - JD93

Very good. Structured and complex. Balanced. Tannins need time and I expect this to improve.

Shared w L, Julie, Sydney on Christmas Eve '08--a hit, living up to the WS hype, leather & dark cherries, complex and well structured; really glad to have a good bit more, as it's sure to improve.

Pass.
