Showing wonderfully at almost 20 years old - super youthful, inky dark and loaded with unctuous glaceed dark fruit. Good earth and a touch o' brett/funk - just a touch. Lovely.

Double decant and still needed a few hours to blow off some dust. Beautiful bouquet of red and some dark fruit, with pronounced herbaceous notes such as garrigue, some spice, earthy notes such as old leather, barnyard and soil and also with some minerality as in schist or iron. Elegant expression with some tertiary development. Very delicious. Recommend to enjoy with food

In the same mold as the 2004. Light, stony, earthy, mint notes. It seems to be advancing just a little faster than the 2004 right now, so this is a good time to drink it.

Auction purchase. 2cm fill. Advanced but nonetheless on point. Beautiful floral nose with pepper and cherry preserve. Lush on entry and suave throughout with sweet red fruits, crushed pepper and vanillin to compliment the mélange of spices and medicinal herbs. A substantial finish with lingering smoky red fruits. Well kept bottles should easily cruise another decade, but definitely in a good drinking window.

Absolutely stunning once again. Perfumed, floral, airy fruit, balm of Provençal herbs, spices, impeccable balance and, as usual, great purity of fruit and STGT qualities. The is drinking in its prime window now, I think, but there’s many years left in the tank. Bravo, Laurent.
93 pts

Rustic and herbal nose with tones of red berries. Decanted for couple of hours, which allowed the fruit to come forward. Ripe raspberry, red cherry and red currant with garrigue, crushed rock and some iron on the palate. Spicy, herbal and herbaceous. Present acidity, tannins and alcohol (14.5% but no heat), well integrated, well balanced and very delicious overall.

Significantly better bottle than the first two of these I drank from my cellar (all purchased via auction); luck of the draw I suppose. I wouldn't have pursued more but this bottle has changed my mind.
Drinking very clean / great texture, well integrated. A little more pepper and mineral coming through than cherry flavor. Lacks the incredible finish that I've had with the 2001 and 2003 vintages, which prevents me from scoring it higher, but excellent all the same.

94-95 pts

This medium-to-deep garnet Châteauneuf was decanted off of its sediment and allowed two hours in decanter prior to tasting over the ensuing three hours. Fully expressive upon initiation of sampling, it offers a layered package of dark bramble fruits, licorice, Provençal herbs, loamy earth and crushed rocks. Fresh, medium-to-full-bodied and with nicely integrated alcohol (14.5%), it stays solid in the middle and finishes long. This is a gorgeous Châteauneuf with fully resolved tannins and velvety textures. It is definitely at its apogee but well-cellared bottles should retain enough stuffing to provide enjoyement for another 2-3 years. Drink now-2025.

This 2006 Charvin CDP wine 🍷 is a wonderful Bouquet that offers drinkers a Burgundist style of a drop. If we can only open a 16-year-old bottle of wine like this every time.. well find and enjoy!

Gorgeous. More feminine than some CnPs, but no brett on the nose or bricking. PnPd for a glass of wild blueberry, slight French oak, graphite. Beautifully balanced. In an optimal drinking window.

This bottle has a little Brett and barnyard. Still has vibrant red fruit with provincial spice box notes. Maybe not as deep as prior bottles but much more elegant and balanced than a recent ‘06 Beaucastel.

Dark grenate, limpid, no bricking. 3h decant. Didn‘t evolve much afterwards, maybe the fruit got more to the background. Full-bodied, very soft extraction, intense tannins. Crazy aromatics of red fruits, herbal garrigue, smoke and earth. Some drying finish maybe stands for the only negative aspect. Really enjoyed this classical chateauneuf with the distinctive stem character. Drink now until 2040

Put through the vinturi into the decanter and began drinking ~75 minutes later. Took another hour before it hit its stride, although I might give my next bottle more time. Edit: definitely giving my next bottle a good deal more time.
Perfectly good, but neither particularly interesting or exciting - the '01 and '03 Charvins are some of my favorite CdP's.
Still has plenty of acid and a long finish, but a lot of the other notes have faded. Get tobacco and a certain amount of minerality, but very, very little fruit.
Given the structure, still has many years left, just not sure I'm excited if it fades further.

This was nice but not fireworks. Sadly, I find myself feeling that way about Charvin more frequently these days than in the past. Me or the wines? Anyway, I agree with others, this still has some life in front of it. Given the relative simplicity of my bottle, if I had more '06s, which I don't, I'd roll the dice and hold them hoping for more secondary/tertiary development.

In the decanter for 3 hours and drunk over the next 3 hours. Violets, flowers, leather. Well balanced, fine, dry chalky tannins, medium + to long finish. Big wine, I did enjoy though. Holding up very well, years ahead.

Killer CdP, showed much improvement since the last time. Cherry syrup with licorice, tar, asphalt, herbs, plum skins, wet clay minerality; super silky, viscous, still somewhat a modern style but it has aged beautifully with tons of complexity and class. Tiny bit sweet, rich slick mouthfeel, long and changing over the 1 hour at the table. With Korean BBQ/wagyu at home on a table top grill. Lots of fun but the wine did overpower the meat. I thought we were doing Korean BBQ ribs on the outdoor grill. Anyway, aged to perfection, and still has another 5-10 ahead of it although doesn't seem like it would improve with time, just change.

Rosh Hashana dinner (from Saul's in Berkeley). Opened one hour before dinner. Dark ruby in color. Dark cherries and spice box on the nose. In the mouth we have black raspberries, black pepper, some meat nuance and the expected CdP garrigue. A little tannin, but seems almost elegant. Went nicely with my beef brisket.

Light ruby with a watery rim. Bark, garrigue, and licorice on the nose rather than the usual cheery red Charvin fruit. Lovely medium weight, fresh red berry fruit with some real sap, and outstanding complexity with the herbs, earth, and more savory elements beautifully folded in with an almost Nebbiolo-like tarriness at the end. Superb, very expressive bottle with great focus for the vintage, which I have sometimes found blurry.

Strong hearted wine with accents on the Provencal herbs, garrigue galore, a mineral noter and plenty of sound fruit at it's core. Just entering maturity and with many years ahead, still no sin to drink it now. #PB#Kandestederne#Boysofsummer

Red fruits on the nose with thyme, lavender, and rare meat and subtle florals under the Provencal herbal notes. It's full bodied and rich, yet with decent acidity for Grenache. I like the savory meaty and to some degree wild-feral notes in this wine. Very well made CdP drinking at peak. A glass or two is plenty, but this is very well done it its intended mode. Quite long on the back end.

-- decanted immediately before initial taste -- -- tasted non-blind over a couple hours --
Lots of mineral and classic garrigué on the Nose, where there's a relative lack of fruit aromas. Medium bodied on the palate, which seems to be drying-out. Pretty bitter, and the alcohol can be tasted. Appears this is on its downslope. This performed below my expectations, as I generally enjoy Charvin, and have generally liked the 2006 vintage in CdP. Drink Now.

Killer wine. Floral, perfumed, almost smells like Pinot, but on the palate - wow - liquid lavender and thyme, notes of pepper and so light and airy fruit, en danseuse indeed. Very young still, more to come but this is very hard to resist right now. This reminds me of the 2006 Rayas Pignan in many ways.

Exceptional. Light and cool Grenache in its purest expression. Floral with notes of thyme, lavender, rosemary, airy, dancing fruit with marks of raspberry, white pepper. Still young but very expressive right now and a pure delight to drink.
Drinking right on the other side of peak, with hints of hung meat, sweet berries and descent acidity. Very nice drinking wine that did not feel muscular, yet lacked elegance. Ehh...Drink

Light, faded ruby. More garrigue and licorice than the usual bright red Charvin fruit, but the latter increases somewhat with air. Light to medium weight, slight alcohol burn. Still good flavors, but a little long in the tooth in that it feels thin and attenuated rather than silky or plump. The fruit is also not as lively as I would hope.

Deep ruby/red, this Châteauneuf retains beautiful aromatics which include layers of dark bramble fruits, tarragon, rosemary and crushed rocks. Fresh, full-bodied and with tannins that are still in the process of resolving, it delievers flavors mirroring the nose and and has nicely integrated alcohol (listed as 14.5%). The middle palate is solid and the finish has good length. Enjoy this well-made wine over the next five years. Drink now-2023.

Half bottle. Good condition, good balance. I didn't like the flavour of it much though. I had anticipated that it would look good alongside a 2007 Vieux Telegraphe but it didn't. Maybe it's the cepage. Charvin and Senechaux (of some vintages) just don't appeal to me.
*edit: I just added the rider in brackets because I had overstated.
Cellared since release, perfect cork and fiil. Dark red, cherries, red berries, herbs and clean earth on the nose but no barnyard/Brett. Medium body, good fruit concentration but no hint of over-ripe sweetness, great balance, medium finish. Excellent on day 1 and 2. Should drink well for another decade.

One of the better showing CDPs I've had in a while. PnP into a larger Burg glass and slow ox about 30 minutes prior to drinking much of it. Maybe because '06 was considered a less ripe vintage it pulls back some of the "over the top" nature of CDP in many vintages? Feels less weighty and ponderous than most CDPs do to me lately. This seemed better balanced with decent red fruit, spice and garrigue. The oak is close to fully integrated and even the 14.5% ( NOTE I was informed after posting the note that the producer does not use any oak. Aged in cement) So very well integrated in deed :). Alc seems a little less in your face than usual.Think this gets a tad more interesting with another 2-3 years but drinks fine now. I've mostly lost my CDP mojo in the last few years so take this TN for what its worth if you're a big CDP enthusiast.
Fresh and exuberant after being decanted for an hour. Lip-smacking with an appealing funk, the taste and texture reminding me of eating a red prickly pear. The wine smelled like passion-flower.

Tight and not very expressive right now, closed up quickly with air. Not as cool as the 2004, the fruit is still pure with a slightly darker profile combined with a good minerality. Still very much Charvin. I would leave for a few more years.

Dark inky purple with a faded ruby edge in the glass. Nose of blackberry & tobacco. Taste of cherry, blackberry, anise, black pepper, tobacco. Not a "fruit forward" example of CdP. The garrigue notes more expressive. Medium to medium-long finish. Really nice wine which paired well throughout the meal, but was perfect with the duck/fennel/huckleberry dish on the menu.

Not corked. That is a good start! The nose is the purest red cherry. Some underlying spice. The palate is all about red fruit still. With time it expands and develops complexity. Very long finish. That high% old vines grenache experience that very few can attain. Just gorgeous!

Inky purple with a pink rim. On nose, blood quickly blows off to leave a cherry and kirsch driven nose with garrigue, perfumed herbs, rare meat and sandalwoodlike spice. An obvious cdp. Pleasant but serious and modern in a fruit driven way. Long finish and palate of tongue coating black and sour cherries, wood and earth. Medium palate with sweet alcohol but not over the top. The charvin light touch is present but a bit heavier than normal on the alcohol.

An outstanding CNDP. Still dark colored, almost completely opaque. Aroma immediately pronounced and complex, deep black raspberry aromas with leather, smokiness, meaty components. Medium-full body, deep rich blackberr-black raspberry flavors, licorice near the end and into the aftertaste, which is long and leathery. Moderate tannin. As with most CNDP, this is not a sipping wine but needs food to show best. Enjoyable now but may still improve, will certainly last at least another five years. Ric

Popped and poured and drank over two nights. I am completely on board with Jeff's flavor descriptors. This wine showed well on both nights but better on night two suggesting this one will age for another 10 years easily. This one had a lightness you don't awesome find in CdP. Impeccable balance and smoothness. Light cherry profile. Very enjoyable.

Camphor and a touch of lemon on the nose. On the palate, sweet cherry, raspberry, a little bandaid, and notes of white pepper and savory herbs, with moderate acidity. This offers finesse rather than power, and although I don't have a problem with that I would prefer more complexity. Average or slightly below average value for the money at a bit under $50.

One of my first Garagiste purchases, back when I thought I liked CdP. So with that bias in mind, my note may or may not be helpful to you... Nose: some dirty muck, some red fruit, but no obvious barnyard (which I dislike in my wine). A little graham cracker? Plus the savory element unmistakable in the region. Palate: a little sharp, the alcohol is pointed and overshadows much of the entry. I find the acid and the tannin sparring. Short finish. I'm not going to rate this, as I don't like CdP hardly at all, but for my own catalog I'd give this an 80.

Colour medium, not showing much age. Nose opulent, savoury, sweet fruit, very nice. Palate long and pleasing, but still rather tannic to my taste. Half of it was decanted immediately on opening into a screwcap halfbottle which I had two days later. At first the fruit covered the tannin, but the second half two days later revealed that there is really a lot of (good) tannin, not bitter. This will age very well, and it might take quite a few years.

Chateauneuf du Pape 2006 (@ VD): Bouquet with red berry fruits, garrigue and fresh herbs as well, laurel, some minerals and a clear touch of barnyard. On the palate a somewhat sweet start followed by fresh herbs and garrigue, a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness and mild tannin. decanted one hour. deep garnet, w/some oranging at rim; wild cherry, tobacco leaf, a bit of woodsmoke on nose; med+ weight; quite agreeable from the get-go, pretty, kirsch-like at onset, w/herbal quality mid-palate, cracked white pepper & fennel seed, round tannins, decent acids & length. showing considerably better than a bottle six months ago & spot-on w/dinner. getting close to optimal drinking.
I have experienced a lot of bottle variation with this wine. Some bottles are fresh and lively while others are stewed and a little flabby. This bottle was the latter but still enjoyable. A 2 hour decant softened some hard edges.

A welcome respite after a Burgundy disaster. Medium ruby. Hallmark Charvin raspberry confit enlivened by light herbs and ever so slight brett that did not prove to be intrusive. More weighty and syrupy than usual with an interesting element of green olive that added complexity. Good length, adequate acidity, gentle tannins. Maybe a year or two will bring complete resolution, but to my taste, very enjoyable now while retaining its luscious fruit. I was surprised to see that I hadn't had this in over 5 years and that it had apparently picked up significant body over this period of time.

Red fruit, garigue and spice. Complex and tasty but leaner and even more elegant, feminine and subtle than other recent bottles. My wife thinks it lacks fruit but to me it is just right. Not as ethereal as good Burgundy but leans in that direction. Plenty of life left.

The nose is very chateauneuf - garrigue and meaty, more than I remember of other Charvin's. Palate is about freshness due to a strong acidity but not a ton of material. Obviously still young but very enjoyable as it has a certain finesse and elegance to it.

I was really surprised by how mature this wine showed. Initially it was very hot at room temperature but a slight chill helped quite a bit and after 90 minutes of air it really opened up nicely to resemble a mature burgundy. Nose of Chinese five spice, soya sauce, Worcestershire, old furniture, white pepper, root beer, anise, cherry and plum. Palate was initially dominated by heat, but with time and a cooler temperature it came around to show a nice core of ripe fruit and spice. A very good and interesting wine. Based on this bottle I don't see this one going for the long haul. Seemed to be ready to roll now.

94 pts

I double decanted around 4:30 and poured my wife a real small pour around 5PM. Corked it up and headed to the restaurant with a high shoulder fill. Pulled the cork upon arrival at 6PM and started drinking around 8PM. Like the 04 Clos des Pape this showed excellent balance, purity and transparency. This still needs a few years to add complexity and loose a little baby fat but is extremely pleasurable right now to. I'll try another btl around 2017/18. Great now but its best days are still ahead. Very pretty nose of violets when I pulled the cork. I think this will be a lot like tonight's 04 Clos Des Pape after a few more years in the btl.

SonkinCellars Partners Meeting (The Barn): Perhaps not as good as a prior bottle I had, this is still quite good. There is a lot of stink on the nose which surprised me a bit. Very strong barnyard, but also some cherries and spice. Stilly young, but starting to show some nice layering. Good acidity and balance. Nice cherry fruit on the palate. Popped and poured. Needs about an hour of air and then it harmonizes and struts its stuff. After an hour you get plenty of sweet grenache (cherry) fruit, garrigue, anise. Tannins provide plenty of grip suggesting this wine still has years in front of it to show its best.

Popped and poured from the cellar. Dark ruby color with watery meniscus. Nose of herbs, anise and bitter cherry and old barrel. Starting to soften, but still tight with muted Flavors of sweet cherry and baking spice finishing with clenching tannins and a bit of heat. Needs lots of time or a lengthily decant. Seems to have good potential but to soon to evaluate.

Decanted and poured a small taste. Immediately I knew this was going to be enjoyable. Light cherry with just a bit of underbrush, tannins in check and very nice. Three hours later with lamb chops the wine was really showing well, just short of that soft sweet cherry I so enjoy with mature CdP, this one showed very well with just a bit youthful backbone and monolithic'ness, but plenty of early elegance. A bright future for this wine I see. very enjoyable now and sure to get better.

Tasted three hours after decanting. Great bouquet. Red fruit, mineral and floral. Bright, fresh raspberry and strawberry fruit, garigue and spice on the palate. Modest tannins, tart finish and medium weight. Still tastes very young but more accessible than our last bottle. Seductive, elegant and feminine. The style is as much Burgundy as Rhone to me. Tasted after a couple of hours in a decanter. First bottle that we have opened from this vintage. Strawberry, lavender, floral, leather and spice nose. Similar flavor profile with sufficient tannins to suggest good longevity. Subtle and lean but with an underlying complexity. Certainly leaner than other vintages, 2007 and 2010, that I have tasted from Charvin. This will be even more than normally interesting to follow over time. Need to stay away from my remaining bottles for two or three years.

J&K had the gang over for “France Reprise,” so we brought some foie gras to sear, and a mini-vertical of the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Charvin CdP to accompany dinner. No notes, but the 2004 was drinking very well, with a nice spice quality, and softening tannins; seems ready to go. The 2005 was powerful but not over the top, deep fruit and firm tannins, and showed the most promise of the three; a special wine. The 2006 was showing the least at this stage; maybe a touch austere at the moment. A nice trio, excellent meal, and great friends.

Attendre 3 ans. 92-93+ pts

A walk-around Memorial Weekend party was the setting for opening this bottle. It was double-decanted prior to bringing it to the event, allowing five hours in decanter before funneling back into the cleaned bottle. Deep ruby/red, it has beautiful aromatics which include tiers of blackberry, tarragon, rosemary and crushed rocks. The wine is fresh and full-bodied on the palate, with medium-weight, dusty tannins and nicely integrated alcohol (listed as 14.5%). The flavors are black fruit and mineral-driven, persisting throughout the middle palate and long finish. Savory and expressive, this is a Châteauneuf which will be hard to resist over the 8-10 years. Drink now-2023.

Very Grenache right now. Floral and garriguey nose. Palate shows power & presence but not weight. A touch of spice. Went well with a rosemary and blue cheese pasta.

Classic CdP on the nose with lots of floral notes, red fruit, tangy berry, in a more Burgundian style; the palate is really different showing bitter cocoa, dusty cement, some fig, black raspberry, and kind of shut down; still an impressive wine; the nose fools you as being very elegant then the palate clamps down like many in 2006; give this many more years as this will not be ready before the '05s and '07s.

Enjoyed alongside a grilled rack of lamb with about 20 minute decant. Good fruit and the tannins silkened out over the course of an additional 30 minutes. Beautiful deep color and tempting nose.

Tight as a drum. Barely began to open at the end of the bottle/dinner. Some dark red fruit, adequate tannins, but hard to gauge this. Save the remaining bottle to try in a couple more years.

-- popped and poured -- -- tasted a couple pours non-blind over 1.5 hours --
I thought this bottle was reflective both of the 2006 vintage as well as the Charvin style. Light garrigue on the Nose and Palate. Red-fruited, with high acidity and just a little tannin on the palate. Not a "big gloppy" CdP: rather, this had medium concentration of fruit and also a nimbleness that wines from this appellation generally fail to achieve. Clean (no brett). Open/accessible. A pleasurable wine. Very good, or low-level excellent (gut impression score: 89 - 92).

I like Charvin's CdP because of the purity of red fruit. But this '06 did not highlight that style. The fruit seems slightly worn and compote-ed, and buried amidst woodsy, brawny notes like cigar box, and some funk which seems like brett. The tannins are softer than my last bottle, three years ago. I expected this '06 to be drinking very well, but it seems grumpy to have been woken up.

Unusual experience with decades of CDP tastes. Opened and tasted before 1 1/2 decant. Showed promise. High alcohol and tannin blocking some black pepper and smokey game flavor. then with the meal it just fell apart. Not corked and not an off bottle.Either this needs a lot more time or it is not holding together.

Deep dark cherry color, beautiful nose but definitily needs a few more years to fully develop its potential. Medium to full bodied on the palate. No disturbing alcohol, very good but may gain still a few more points, very enjoyable already but better left for 3-5 years..

A beautiful nose of Fromboise, kirsch, pepper, spice and earth open to an elegantly textured, soft, sweet, wine that finishes with supple, black and red, spicy cherries. Drink it now, or age it for up to a decade, it's a very stylish Chateauneuf du Pape.

PopnPour, tasted over 4 hours and on Day 2 -opaque med dark red -gorgeous kirsch/dark cherry, typical Charvin -a bit tight, darker fruit dominant consistent for the vintage, slightly disjointed and finishes with trace heat, more harmonious on Day 2 -very good wine in the making, try again in 2-3 years, WIN on potential

This is a pretty, elegant CDP with lovely flavors of kirsch cherries and garrigue. Finishes fairly complex with subtle concentration. Balance and elegance is what this wine is about and it paired beautifully with Amy's fabulous beef stew. It won't make old bones though so drink up.

This was served a little warm and likely suffered b/c of it. Showing quite a bit of heat on the nose and palate which I haven't gotten before. Bright red fruits, sandalwood, fine tannins and medium finish. Only the heat detracted.

Had this after a great 2006 St. Damien Gigondas Louisane and grilled lamb chops pairing. The Charvin was just too slick, a bit oaky-herbal, and extracted for the pairing. It needs a more refined dish, not charred, gamey notes of the lamb. Unanimous consensus at the table that the meaty, dried herbs and fruit of the Gigondas went much better with the food. That being said, the wine is much too young. Give it another 3 years minimum.

Twelve hour bottle decant followed by another two in the decanter. This is an extremely classy wine. Young and perhaps a bit austere, but has all the components to go the long haul. Black and red fruits shying behind earthy roasted herbs, soil and mineral notes. Medium bodied and long. Probably best enjoyed 2015 - 2020. A great reminder that no one does Grenache like the French. Love it.
Drink now or hold. 91+

Not sure what to make of this. Great nose of brooding dark fruits, leather and chocolate. Taste didn't follow, it was initially sweet with pine needles but then extremely tannic with a finish that seemed to fall off a precipice. This bottle has to be in a closed phase. Potential is there but needs to sleep and retry in 5 years minimum. 88 now with low 90's expected.

This has retreated into its shell since I last tried a bottle to consider purchasing a half-case. The parts are all there (fruit, structure, underlying elegance) but it needs some time to come out of its somber phase and coalesce. The remaining five bottles will rest for at least another few years.

excellent and quite serious. very dark and brooding, but it retains a great freshness. a distinct dustiness that holds back the pure fruit a bit -- this just seems very clamped down, even after being open for 24 hours. there is excellent balance here -- very intense fruit, but nothing cooked or hot. this should age slowly, but reward it. give it at least a few more years.

Popped and aerated for 3 hours. Pronounced nose of dark fruits, kirsch liqueur, dried herbes de Provence, beef broth, and garrigue. Medium-plus body, quite concentrated for an '06 Chateauneuf. On the palate, the fruit is almost feral, with spiced blackberry and raspberry notes combining with flavors of dried herbs, smoked meats, minerals, and earthy root vegetal notes to give an overall profile that is more on the savory, slightly saline side. The tannins are still large-scaled and a bit chunky on the close. This is still showing a touch young and should be cellared for a few more years...still, overall an excellent 2006!
Quick commentary: Opened with the 2006 Donjon, which provided an interesting comparison of 2006 Chateauneuf from similar tiers. While delicious and perhaps showing greater complexity, on this evening the Charvin wasn't quite the match for the overall freshness and elegance of the Donjon. Still, both wines were delicious and a reminder that "off/sleeper" vintages provide some of the best drinking experiences!

Medium color, strong nose of damp earth, saddle leather, Provençal herbs, licorice, and red raspberries. The palate was a bit tight one night 1 revealing the structure of this wine. On day it had loosened up to reveal a gorgeous, supple texture of dark red fruit, with a savory mid-palate and insanely long finish. I agree with Steffen's review below as it does remind me a bit of a younger version of the 2001 Henri Bonneau CDP and is reminiscent of the 2004 Charvin, but a bit more refined and elegant.

Sandy’s multi course with Ash and gang – Showing great, ’06 CDPs can be great deals. Dark bricky red, three descriptors hit me on the nose – bitter chocolate, peanut butter, and pine needles. In a wonderful mélange tho! On the palate, wonderful sleek balance and good chocolate meets crushed pine nuts. Classy CdP.

Terrific wine. This is exactly what CdP should be in my opinion. Red to dark fruit, kirsch liqueur, garrigue, licorice, earth. full and explosive on the mid-palate, but not at all woody, overblown and plush. It's got finesse, elegance, a silky to velvety texture, and amazing finish. Old-school CdP that is showing off its 85% old vine Grenache and skillful wine making. This is one that can go in the cellar for more than a decade or be had with dinner right now. Stunning wine and fans of old-school CdP should buy this for sure. Slightly reminiscent of the 2001 Henri Bonneau CdP I had over the last year or so.

Decanted for one hour. Nose requires some coaxing, but its lovely...thyme, lavender, smoke. Palate is tightly wound. Cherry, some sweet dark fruit notes, but a shit load of structure too. Tightness on the back side. Tightens more with air. Honestly, the wine just seems really young right now, it's bouncing recklessly 'round my mouth. Slight hints of the alcohol, too. Don't think I'm opening my remaining bottles for a good 3-5 years.
Too young at this stage - closed in fact with alcohol dominating in the nose and tannins in the mouth. I'm sure this will be better in a couple of years.

Red berries, strawberries, berry jam on the quite fruity nose (tasted on the second day!). Lots of berries on the palate, a lot of kirsch, exotic spices, liquorice, refreshing acidity... quite long aftertaste. Very good, but far from ready... the alcohol needs to integrate more. Best on the second day. Very promising, but difficult to keep your hands of.

I'm a fan of Charvin's wines and wanted an early data point on this young one. Nose of raspberry fruit, flowers, forest and tea, with zero heat. Quite young, the palate shows good concentration, powdery tannin, red fruit and tea, more Burgundian and classy than powerful. Lovely, juicy finish. Half the bottle remains to see how it developed overnight. Obviously an infant, but I have every confidence that this will develop into yet another excellent Charvin Chateauneuf. UPDATE: No degradation overnight. The wine actually tightened up and was not as expressive, although, again, the raw materials are very promising. Let this one sleep for three years or so before trying again.

Popped and poured; opened up over an hour to give beautiful high toned red berry fruit framed by notes of barnyard, flowery spice and mineral; very Burgundian mouthfeel with a silky yet crunchy texture. Wine seemed to shut down on day 2, so my other bottles will rest for a while. Extremely classy wine, enjoyed this tremendously.

Right off the bat, color is unusual for a CdP: med cherry core with light reddish rim. What a beautiful nose. Hard to tell CdP here: mineral, floral, cherry and pepper. A touch herbal. Beautifully balanced, focused and 'droit', red fruits profile with a touch of licorice (even though he doesn't wood at all).
After 2h, alcohol was more present and the wine shut down. Put this wine in the cellar and let it sleep a few years.

Popped and poured. Medium plus crimson hue. Pronounced aromas of raspberry & kirsch, fennel sausage, salt brine, dried herbs, and a bit of game. Medium-plus body, with nice concentration. Big flavors on the palate mirror the nose but add distinct notes of earth and crushed stones to the fruit...quite savory too, almost like enjoying a broth of sorts. Medium tannins are quite unobtrusive for the vintage. Really delicious and just singing. Should age well for years but quite tempting to open another up in the near term.

Good typicity on the nose with lifted liquer like red fruits, garriggue and baked, dusty earth. A kind of salty mineral character is appealing. A touch hot but not enough to be offputting, particularly in the context of Chateauneuf. On the palate though this strikes me as a bit thin, surprisingly. Not the density or depth I anticipated. Some tannin for sure in the mix. A bit short / simple on the finish. Hopefully this is just a bit clamped down and needs to unwind.

Enjoyed with a wonderful dinner at Alto. Showing its bright potential for only brief periods at this point, it was tight and closed for much of the evening as well as the next day. Very elegant and balanced, but the fruit, while present, didn't want to come out and show itself quite the way that it almost certainly will. Laying my others down for some time and looking forward to their development.

Bought this to evaluate for purchase. Popped and poured a taste. Aromas of herbs (thyme, rosemary), garrigue and oil-cured black olives immediately come forth. Then subtle notes of sandalwood, and some cherry liqueur. The palate is firm, yet plush; the tannins and acidity near perfect; all framing impeccable red fruit. Beautiful -- this is flat out lovely stuff. Clamps down after a couple of hours, but there's loads of material underneath. Buy more, and then wait at least five years to open another bottle.

Bright, clear, translucent medium red. For the first few hours, this was all herbs, lavender, black olive, and pine needles. Lighter weight for Chateauneuf with fresh fruit, great acidity, and early on, a tarry licorice core that lingered. At around the 2 hour mark, beautiful raspberry scented fruit just soared out of the glass. Not much tannin. Another elegant beauty from Charvin that will continue to drink well early but whose acidity rather than tannin will allow it to age over the mid-term. What a refreshing style in today's high alcohol, maximum concentration world.

Disappointingly bitter, with some nice herbal notes but not enough sweetness of fruit to counter the bitterness. Relatively light weight overall, which would be very nice without the slightly green/bitter elements.

94 pts

Pulled the cork upon arrival at 6PM and started drinking around 8PM. Like the 04 Clos des Pape this showed excellent balance, purity and transparency. This still needs a few years to add complexity and loose a little baby fat but is extremely pleasurable right now to. I'll try another btl around 2017/18. Great now but its best days are still ahead. Very pretty nose of violets when I pulled the cork. I think this will be a lot like tonight's 04 Clos Des Pape after a few more years in the btl.

Popped and poured. Needs about an hour of air and then it harmonizes and struts its stuff. After an hour you get plenty of sweet grenache (cherry) fruit, garrigue, anise. Tannins provide plenty of grip suggesting this wine still has years in front of it to show its best.

Similar flavor profile with sufficient tannins to suggest good longevity. Subtle and lean but with an underlying complexity. Certainly leaner than other vintages, 2007 and 2010, that I have tasted from Charvin. This will be even more than normally interesting to follow over time.

It needs a more refined dish, not charred, gamey notes of the lamb. Unanimous consensus at the table that the meaty, dried herbs and fruit of the Gigondas went much better with the food. That being said, the wine is much too young. Give it another 3 years minimum.

92-93 pts

Demie bouteille (from half-bottle)

Completely closed and tight upon opening. Decanted and started to come around after an hour, kept getting better, so let these breathe if you've got 'em.

Chateauneuf du pape Blind tasting (My Home): Tasted Blind.

Very structured and classic. Tons of herbs and red fruit. Needs a few years but don't expect a gobby blockbuster. I like this style a lot.

2006 Southern Rhone horizontal tasting - CDP (Crystal Wines): Alcohol : 14.5%
Tasted Blind. Quite cloudy of purplish ruby, weird the rim ss little brownish (storage problem?) Restraint nose of spices, pepper, rubber and hint of plum. Cough water like flavor. Quite rich, but very alcoholic and heaty, not balance. Very big and structure up front. Mouth coating powdery tannins with long finish. Flaw? Buy - Re-taste is needed

Superbe nez élégant, avec des notes épicées. Belle trame tannique.

93 pts

Young, young wine. The nose on this was very closed down at first, butt he last glass (after 30 minutes in the decanter) really started to show something. Very prototypical chateauneuf that has years ahead of it. I won't open another for at least a couple of years.

This is so fresh and lively.
The nose is closed in at this point.
What is there is cherry fruit. A little earth.
The palate is so focused and gorgeous.
Lively Bing Cherry fruit that bounces around your mouth.
The finish shows a hint of spice and some provenceal herbs.
Long finish. A really great Charvin to me.

Pork Fest Wines: 06 Charvin, 01 Turley, 96 Grasso, 02 Shirvington, etc. (Rockridge, CA (Oakland)): My friends Jeff and Pam brought over a Magnum of this tasty wine...killing babies..yes we were!!! Opened around 2 pm and consumed about 7 pm - 9 pm. Young, yes, but terrific. Juicy acidity, terrific concentration and purity of fruit, tannins and acid providing very nice structure...provencal spice, slight licorice, dark fruit, black pepper and a slight leather note....went through a period where it really clamped down on the sides of the tongue but then generously opened back up. 93++ Hold and revisit in 10 years.

This wine was decanted and poured. It initially showed well but after about an hour the wine closed down, the tannins dominated and it became disjointed. This will need a few years of bottle age to show its best and has the potential to become an outstanding wine.

Ripe strawberries, black cherries, kirsch, exotic spices in the slightly lactic, elegant and engaging nose. Spicy and fruity on palate, with good persistence and depth; accessible in its youthful exuberance (after decanting), but this will surely close down in the near future. A great Charvin CDP in the making.
