Bought on auction recently. Bottle and cork in good condition. Medium garnet colour, some sediment. Red fruit, strawberry, thyme, garrigue, liquorice, sous bois, and spices, with medium-level acidity, mostly resolved tannin, and good length. Restrained upon opening, understated even, in particular for CdP. After one hour in a decanter, the wine starts to open up and becomes a little darker, more mineral, and more balsamic, if still restrained. Fully open after two hours of aeration. Good balance. Classic style. Drink now with at least one hour of aeration, or hold.

Simon Beatty Memorial Dinner - Chablis Le Clos (Noizé): We are getting deep into the evening now - it's not so much that the senses are dulled, but rather the conviviality and spirit of the evening is more joyous than contemplative. With that said, it's a savoury treat to go back to red Chateuneuf, something I loved earlier in my wine career. I was struck by how much the pleasure this gives is similar to that of Musar - a kind of non-tannic, non-acidic structure.

Light, elegant carresing sweetness, Burgundian feel, good acidity; very fresh for the vintage, no signs of fatigue. Plenty of local feel. Drinking a point. Everyone loved this. #H&N&Co.

Still fresh, although certainly mature. Sweet Grenache, sous bois, carresing fruit and yes, a very Burgundian style, smooth and elegant. For this vintage, I really do understand the Chambolle-reference. No reason to hold any further, a sexy drink now. #GlKongevej#Ivar

Perhaps a bit past its prime, yet, you still find plenty of peppery red fruits, a bushel of herbs, thyme and flowers, and a medium-bodied hit of black raspberries and bright, peppery, cherries and green olives in the finish. This is not a wine to hold for further development.

Smoky and earthy nose. Some grenache raspberry still in the background. The palate is boldly structured and well balanced. Some heat in the finish. Drinks good now!

Surprisingly high toned. Almost like a cote rotie. Definitely notes of leather but also a high toned fruit that borders on a flavor profile between Grenache and Pinot. Good, but didn’t reward cellaring as I had hoped

Sweet caressing fruit, creamy, round texture, garrigue here, the warmth of the vintage, still light on its feet; AD loved it, enjoying the sunset, so maybe this is really the Musigny of the South? #Kandestederne

This bottle was drinkable, but tasted of earth and seemed well over the hill. Corks on this bottle and the last were generally fine. I suspect poor storage on this lot.

Fully mature nose displaying soft red fruit, raspberry, strawberry jam, smoked meat, tobacco, a hint of green that adds complexity, dark spice, tree bark and earth. Fully integrated palate, nicely layered warm red fruit, silky and round, bright acidity, medium mineral, fully resolved tannins and a medium to long sweet red fruit driven finish. Drinking beautifully.

Absolutely beautiful wine that is at fully maturity IMHO. Personally, I love Charvin - his wines are like a magical blend of fine Burgundy and CdP. Great balance of fruit and earth/terroir.

Drunk during our second CdP 2000 tasting! Charvin was the least memorable bottle of the whole tasting that night. Flat and bit boring. No much finish. I would not judge this producer by this one bottle but it was nothing to write about.

Very rich nose with red fruits and brown spice. Pure silky red fruits on the palate are supported by a strong dose of acidity. Lovers of modern CdP may find this thin or light weight. For me, as someone who is not a lover of CdP or grenache generally, this was as good as it gets. Drink now.

Well structured, but too young to drink quite yet. Full on Blackberry fruit on the nose. The other elements have settled and started to knit well together, but the forward nose and flavors need a bit of time.

Ruby color, with some browning along the edges. Nice floral notes in the bouquet. On the palate, lean, elegant, balanced and complex; like drinking a mature fine burgundy. Terrific bottle. Not sure you want to sit on this wine much longer.

Beautiful nose with brown spice, herb, funk, dark fruit and cinnamon. Palate is balanced with a sweet grenache dark fruit. This is a more feminine expression of cdp. Parker said Charvins wine resembles Rayas. I partially agree with that but Rayas' nose is much more sexy and the palate has more details and complexity. Drinking at peak now. No reason not to enjoy it now. 91-92

This bottle seems to be at maturity. Much better than bottles drunk years ago. I don't know that it gets better but no hurry. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has a slight funk, boysenberries, slight dark cherries and char. On the palate, perhaps a more feminine side, but if so, not the best hygiene either (in a good way). Earthy. Plenty of black raspberry fruit. Layers of complexity. Great texture. Still on the fresher side of maturity. I loved this wine.

This showed an incredibly rich nose with a mix of brown spice, black fruits and tart red fruits with hints of mint and animal musk. On the palate I found lifted textures with spicy currant, dark fruits and vibrant acidity. It finished fresh, maybe a tad shorter than expected, but oh so nice. There's no reason to wait here, this is ready to go.

Smoky bacon, garrigues, red fruit. Nose is somewhat closed. Palate shows concentration and length. Little bit dry, finish is warm (alcohol?) and long. Needs more time to open up.

Medium ruby/garnet color, lightening up slightly towards the rim. Beautiful notes of sweet spices, but also pepper, kirsch, garrigue, some minerality. It's medium-full bodied but not heavy, with medium acidity adding freshness and good quality medium tannin. Very good length. A super traditional, classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape that is all about balance and elegance and not the in-your-face kind of style that many producers favor now. Good stuff.

Birthday Celebration Chateauneuf-Du-Papes (Bill's, Wilmette IL): Something just didn't seem right about this. There was a very medicinal quality to the nose and palate along with some red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, and a touch of spice. I've never had a Charvin act like this before, so I'm going to chalk it up to an off bottle

Medium ruby with bricking around the edges. Captivating aromas of cigar box, baking spices, leather and crushed red berries lead to a well balanced and elegant palate that shows crushed sweet red fruits, hint of forest floor, medium acidity and a long finish redolent with ripe pipe tobacco.

Absolutely delicious, with spicy red fruit, blood orange, rhubarb, and garrigue notes. Medium body but rich, good concentration, and a very long, spicy finish. The finish is just amazing. 14.5% abv, but I don't get any heat or alcohol burn. This and the 2001 are spectacular, stylish wines with character and finesse.

Annual CDP tasting (Edina Country Club): 30 minute decant, drank a glass over about an hour. This drank younger than I expected. I think a 1 or 2 hour decant would have been better. Lighter-bodied, more Burgundy than CDP, nice red fruit, cherry, raspberry. Tannins were more present than anticipated.

Annual Holiday CDP Tasting (Edina, MN): Dark red color. Decanted for 30 minutes; drank 1 glass over 3 hours. This was the other wine tonight that I was looking forward to more than any of the others. I've had it rock and be very good. Tonight was very good, but not a rock your world experience, Lovely cedarbox nose upfront, sour cherry, muted nose, tightly coiled, opens more over 90 minutes, some perfume comes forth, a bit of leather. The palate is medium bodied, briary, oak, bright raspberry, some cassis, spicy finish. This was pretty tightly coiled and just willing to really unwind it what I think it ultimately it will be. 92+ to 93pts.

Cellared since release. Perfect cork and fill. Pop and pour, drunk over 2 days. Dark red core, lightening at rim. Nice complex nose of cherries, garrigue and pepper. Hints of mint come out on day two. Medium-bodied, lush fruit and woodsy/spicy notes on the palate, excellent balance and long smooth finish. Drinking at peak. Still going strong on day two. Should last for another decade. Outstanding.

Dinner for 17 (Our house. Denver, CO): Optioned not to decant; opened 3 hours prior to serving. Another spectacular showing for this elegant, poised wine. Bright red berries and spiced herbs on the nose. Besides the terrific balance on the palate that I've noted in the past, the wine showed more depth of flavor and penetration this time - red fruit, earth, asian spice and garrique. It seemed to gain expression when paired with food.

Opened for Madrid-PSG. This was good (it's a Charvin), but it was not as enjoyable as a couple of other vintages I've had in the last year or two. '98 was a ripe vintage but wore it beautifully, '99 was less ripe and I really enjoyed it, '00 was ripe and it showed. Now, the Charvins know how to make wine, so it didn't show in some of the typical ways for overripe CdP: no pruney-ness, no heat (Ok, a reasonable amount of heat. I never get these people who drink a 2003 CdP and then say, "Noticeable heat! Boo!" Duh, it's 2003 CdP...).
The fruit was nice, but the wine felt blockier than usual, especially in the mid-palate. There were some burnt notes and chocolate notes here and they masked some of the herby elements that are far more interesting in my mind. The level of finesse I have come to Charvin just wasn't there, and by the way the fruit faded on day 2 (the blockiness faded too, if that's any consolation), I don't think this will get any better.

Decanted one hour, tasted over 2 hrs; bottle from secondary market -mild-mod bricking -mostly mature grenache -med acidity, mature elements with earth and faint red fruit residue but somewhat tired and not overly complex, some heat and remaining tannins on finish -a disappointing bottle

Wow. Really good bottle of CdP. Not a big 'Parkerized' wine, almost Burgundian. In fact, I think blind I might have guessed a good vintage / good maker Gevrey Chambertin 1er. Not a lot (if any) of the standard (or Pegau standard) horse manure / funk. A cleaner CdP version. I really liked this...

This has put on heft and depth since I last tried it. Dark ruby color with restrained nose. Decanted shortly before drinking, I would almost call it closed, but opened in the glass with Charvin spice, cigar and tobacco elegance. Very clean and no funk, this has a long life ahead. Very good.

This is going nowhere - and it's a treat upon a bad & busy day; comforting, smoothy, elegant, almost creamy, burgundian, yet with lots of locale - garrigue, spiciness etc. This is the craft of a superior winemaker - and as the song says: I could drink a case of you, and still be on my feet. If I did have a case, though, I would probably drink up within the next five years, and it's so lovely now.

Cellared since release. Perfect fill and cork. Dark red to rim. Spicy sweet Grenache, cherries, leather on nose, medium to full body, peppery spice and ripe fruit on the palate, a bit low acid but not flabby, beginning aged complexity, long finish with hint of tannins on the end, should drink well for years, outstanding.

Light-medium ruby, clearly much lighter at the rim. Still viscous. Sweet Grenache garrigue is textbook in the nose. Coming out more with air. In the mouth, all tannins totally resolved. Good presence and grip, medium body, cherry fruit. Simpler than I expected, it is good rather than great. 4-12-14-7: 87/100.

This was a few points worse than a bottle we had last week. Furthermore, air-time seemed to make it worse. It was a little spicy and CDPish after a minor decant. Additional decant time resulted in more Burgundian flavors with tobacco and cherry.

Highly Rated Rhones and a Few More (Shari's house, Mpls, MN): Medium-dark red color and a bit cloudy. This had been slow-O'd for 3 hours. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This bottle was thrown into the tasting as a teaser since several of us had just had it a week ago. Though it was quite good, it was not nearly as good as the previous bottle. In fact, this closely resembled a bottle I had back on 5/10/13 which had me thinking it may be best to drink up. Nose offers up some perfume with leather, light florals, tobacco, cedarbox, cherry and berry, earth, and later some pretty subtle garrigue. The palate is earthy, funk, leather, lavender, medium body, a bit thin, medium plus finish. Very Burgundian. 92+pts.

Monthly Tasting Group: CDP's and Southern Rhones (Cafe Lurcat, Mpls, MN): Medium dark red color. Decanted for 45 minutes. Drank 1 glass over 45+ minutes. I was thoroughly impressed by this wine. I love the elegance and finesse that is Charvin. This bottle was even better than one from about 8 months ago and that was darn good. This nose is explosive with a gorgeous perfume of florals and garrigue, just enough earthy pleasant funk, cherry, kirsch, hints of grahite. The palate displays the intensity of flavor, but with the utmost of finesse, garrigue, violets, raspberry, cherry, kirsch, licorice, scorched earth. Extremely well balanced with perfectly integrated tannins, medium body, medium acid and a long 60+ second finish. Now I really want to drink this side by side with the '01. One of my WOTN's.

Decanted 2 hrs (optional). As with last year I decanted with the hope of developing more aromas. However, I now agree with DrW that the expression of this wine is pure elegance, poise and finesse, at least for a CdP. What I called 'tight' last year feels more like focus. The red raspberry fruit and spices are wonderful on the nose. The palate starts with light to medium fruit but is met with dancing acidity and a little tannic backbone by the finish, alternating from silky to mineral to firm(ish). Even with its lightness of being this was a great pairing for a burly osso bucco dish. Decant is optional as is further aging, but I will continue to age and decant this wine.

Clear ruby. Compared to the '01, the nose is a beacon of pure raspberry fruit without any of the barnyard funk of the younger wine. Medium weight, plump, fresh fruit without any overripeness or heaviness-in other words, the essence of the Charvin style. Adequate acidity but clearly lower than the younger version, perhaps not as complex as that wine, but the clarity and quality of the fruit are just beyond reproach. Absolutely at its peak-not a bad place for drinking my last bottle.

Bottle A (hf/in). Tasted at 16,5-17 C over two days. Tasted vis-à-vis Clos des Papes 2000, this was certainly the superior wine; burgundian (I know it’s a cliché, but yes!), smooth, elegant, very pure grenache with the sweetness and the garrigue, very much a Rayas look-a-like, I am loving every zip of this. On the second day, it has not changed much, still extremely drinkable, châteauneuf in it’s most elegant expression. Peaking, I guess, but what do I know – this is Charvin, and it is very special. No hurry to drink, no sin, either,

Grey market bottle imported by Premier Cru. Last bottle in my cellar and one the best I've had over the years. Light red without any browning. Perfect interplay of bright red fruit and garrigue. Supple and sinuous with gorgeous, creamy red fruit buttressed by excellent acidity and the pinch of green. A touch of caramel without any porty, surmaturite tones. Very much in the elegant, pure style of Rayas. Bravo!

Medium amber red color with moderate bricking. Decanted for 30 minutes. Nose is lovely CDP with wet earth, whispy garrigue, very floral, raspberry, black cherry. The palate is decidely elegant, medium to light-medium body, slightly sour cherry, some darker notes of raspberry, earthy, underbrush, spices. This is well balanced, silky tannins, and has a very long finish. This is at perfect place right now, and i don't know how much longer this will hang on. Drink over the short term.

Bottle open for 2 hours. Rich, savory. lots of garrigue, spices, some raspberry & granache fruit. Some gritty tannins and medium spicy finish. Just doesn't have the vibrancy or depth of some other CdP that I like, but certainly an enjoyable wine. 1/3 of the bottle drunk the next day was actually better--more savory and more spicy fruit! Still, I would drink this sooner than later.

Flock CdP Tasting - 2003 & Older (Jordan's): Ruby hue. Nose is generous with big ripe candied red fruit, herbs and a kiss of toast. Palate is round, rich and medium bodied with tart fruit. Plenty of energy on the mid palate, but a quick herby finish. My 7/9, Group 5/9.

Orange on the brim. Traditional Pape style on the palate and nose. 'Stewed' prunes, raisins, laurel, sous-bois and forest tones in the nose. Multiple spices, black pepper, grilled meat and dark fruits on the palate. But the 1998 Charvin was even better.

Garnet with lighter rim. Thin and muted right out of the bottle. On an evening where everything was flawed, I wondered whether this was the third straight flawed 2000 Chateauneuf. In fact, it did have a little brett, not something I've encountered a lot with this producer, but not nearly as overwhelming as in the Mon Aieul. Lighter weight, good acidity, and gradually, the Charvin raspberry fruit appears with some licorice. Prickly finish. This is well short of how good this wine can be, or at least was as of a year ago. Probably the best advice is to drink up. I thought it was at its best in mid-2011, and unless you have a really cold cellar, this assessment is probably accurate.

Deep ruby red in color. The wine was slow o'd for about 6-8 h. Expressive black raspberry liquer, meat juices, camphor, faint notes of licorice and underbrush dominate the complex nose. The palate is beautifully proportioned with refined tannins, low acidity and waves of ripe dark berries on a long finish.

Hopefully not a representative bottle.Brownish color. Brown sugar nose. Palate is sticky sweet dried pruny fruit with heat on the back end. Moderate sweet finish. Sickeningly sweet and over ripe without much of a spine. Bought at auction, bottle looked great on inspection but may have seen some heat which stripped out the complexity at some point. Unlike any other Charvin I've had. 82 if scored.

A follow up bottle to a bottle several weeks ago that was off (no hints of cork, just inexpressive and dull). This one is much better, an understated but classic CdP, raspberry, white pepper, garrigue. Fruit is a bit dry and austere. Long finish.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose is tight giving way to notes of camphor, a little band aid and a tequila smell (the graphite/ash smell you get when you rub tequila in the palms of your hand). Flavors of berries, herbs and a dash of Ricola on the finish. Medium acidity, lighter tannins, medium body. Drink over the short term? Not sure. This wine was not as expressive and of sufficient weight for a 2002 CdP. Seems a bit off so no rating.

Wow. Side by side with the 00 Vatican Sixtine, and in a different league. More mature, more fruit-filled, more elegant and roundedly substantial, more nuanced and ethereal, this is the bomb. Just longer lasting, more refined, and more delicious for prime time drinking with grilled fresh Alaskan king salmon with fine friends. Wish I had more, this could go another 4 or so years (some brown in the decanter), but is at a lovely peak now. Very, very fine. 94pts pure quality, 96 personal prefence. This is It, and On.

Popped and poured. Might not have given this enough time to strut its stuff, but without much air, this bottle seemed more advanced than its age and even a bit past prime. No fruit left, but smoky leather and garrigue dominate. Slightly bretty with some iron and sweaty farm stuff. Palate still had some sweetness, but no fruit, all secondary. I've got a few more left of my case; this was the least enjoyable bottle so far. Hopefully flawed rather than over the hill.

Mmm, this took a while to hit peak, but now this is singing. An expressive nose of pepper and garrigue moves to a spicy, vibrant, energetic palate. There is still a surprising amount of structure and nice mineral notes, although the fruit on this bottle is a touch dry. Lovely bottle of wine.

Brick ruby. This is good stuff. Flamboyant berry, ink and celery salt nose. A touch of brett on the palate. Otherwise a round, fruit filled wine with a creamy texture, vanilla and jasmine tea. . Unfortunately, it loses a bunch with air as the brett takes over. Initially a 95 point wine, ends up in the 89 to 90 range. (89)

Decanted 2 hours (needed 45 min plus copious sediment). Lightish garnet. Last bottle was 4 yrs ago and I thought time would develop the aromatics. Not with this bottle. The aromatics were tighter, more focused, not broader/expressive. Nose had a pure, almost bright cherry character, with the previous noted garrique and licorice-like aromas barely supporting. The palate was a star with intense grenache dancing fruit that was light but very lengthy. Firm line of tannins, mineral acidity, giving a finesseful texture/sensation, but not a whole lot of overt complexity of flavor/aroma. Terrific with food. Wasn't expecting this 'stage', but pretty sure this, while quite fine now, has an interesting life ahead.

Le nez classique du domaine, de fraises des champs, et de fleurs, un des vins les plus bourguignons de ce vigneron qui en compte plusieurs. Just outstanding. A traditonal ChdP nose, but without much barnyard or gaminess. Sweeter than you would think. In the mouth it has smoothed out, with sweet fruit like young ChdP (compared to the more historical style), but not over the top like many of the 2003s. there were elements of leather, garrigue, pepper, but all framed with the wonderful sweet, rich fruit. We had barely a hint of brick in the color. Not at all over the hill, but drinking superbly right now. Fabulous.

Didn't love it, which is unusual for me and Charvin's CdPs. I last had this wine three years ago, and since then, the wine has lost the sweetness of fruit but has not gained much in the way of complexity. The wine is showing less in terms of fruit, size and structure (in particular, the tannin has really thinned out), which are all not unusual at this point, but there is a void in the midpalate that makes this 2000 much less impressive than the 2001 Charvin, for example.

brick red around the edges. notes of some kind of sweet potpourri and, I kid you not, Luxardo Maraschino Originale 32°. some leather and slightly smoky qualities lurking just beneath the perfume. easy elegant tannins, super drinkable right now, definitely in its prime. Charvin's wines are almost Burgundian in style, which I prefer to brute-strength CdPs, so this bottle was really something tasty.

Tasted vis a vis the 1999; this richer, typical for the vintage, darker with notes of plumb, raisin, sweetness and a touch of heat - not as elegant as 1999, more typical neuf, but certainly on the same level. This will keep, but I don't see it developing much further.

Well it had to happen. This is the fourth time I have had the 2000 Charvin, and the prior three bottles have all been promising but sulky, dark, and ultimately somewhat unyielding. I *finally* got a good one that is ready to play. Textbook Charvin with sweet, pure red fruit and white pepper, overlaid delicately, precisely and beautifully with dried Provencale herbs. This is a very pretty expression of Grenache. Mmm, spicy finish, surprisingly structured and peppery. Good upward potential of a couple of points here and certainly quite delicious from this bottle.

A little more funk to this than in recent bottles, but the beautiful raspberry fruit still manages to come to the fore. Spicy and fresh with little tannin to get in the way of enjoying it right now. Lovely wine if not quite as pure as it can be.

Vinturi decanted 1 hour. What Jeff Leve said. One of the nicer Charvins I've had in recent memory. Soft and lustrous, the textures and aromas are equally matched and equally compelling. I'd have scored this higher but for some structural issues; best over the next 5 years, I think, but drinking quite well now with a brief decant; I don't see it improving from here. A very satisfying finish, and very nicely integrated.

Beautifull nose with sweet strawberries, smoke and later licorice. Medium-bodied, soft and delicious with pepper, herbs and licice. Good now and typically that the nice Charvin makes a CNDP with emphasis on balance and elegance.

This beautifully styled Chateauneuf du Pape was filled with jammy strawberry, garrigue, licorice, black cherry and fresh cherry aromas. Soft and silky in the mouth, this medium bodied, mature wine ends with flavors of fresh, spicy, jammy cherries. This wine should be drunk up over the next few years as it lacks the same level of power is showed a few years ago.

89 pts

Fairly light red and transparent at the rim. Looks like a red burgundy, but it doesn't taste like one. Nose of garrigue and a hint of burnt sugar. In the mouth the wine doesn't show much fruit, but rather gives you garrigue, iron, and blood. The fruit that is there is definitely red and has a bit of sweetness to it. This is a good wine, but not as good as the last bottle I had. I have 6 left so it will be interesting to see how this wine evolves. This wine has plenty of acids and tannins for the long haul. I expect more tertiary notes to emerge in the next couple of years. As it catches more air it is beginning to be a bit more expressive and the finish is lengthening.

2000 Chateauneufs @ Hawksmoor (Hawksmoor, London): Slightly smokey black fruit nose. Quite rounded and ready, probably the most open and accessible so far. Very typically Chateauneuf. Lacks the complexity of the others. Takes on a sweet, more open, slightly spirity quality after a couple of hours. ***

Light ruby like a burgundy, with a genteel nose of spice, garrigue, licorice. Medium bodied, with finely crafted layers of red fruit and berries woven together with smooth velvety tannins. Thrilling finish that lingers for nearly a minute. 14.5% alcohol, but I didn't notice it. Now here's a fine and understated CDP that doesn't run you over with a bus!

Seems quite unchanged from a year ago, which is to say delicate, pure, and full of red fruit and subtle southern Rhone spice and herbs. Totally seductive. I just love the balance and feel of this wine in the mouth. It is so silky without the slightest hint of any rough edge. Obviously drinking beautifully, but no reason to think that it won't hold at this plateau for some time given its wonderful fruit.

Cracked open a case tonight. Shocked at how young and unevolved this still is. Lots of red fruits on the nose which follows through on the palate. Medium-bodied, straight-laced with just a bit of heat on the finish. 92 points with room for further improvement.

Garnet in color, fading to brick red at edges. Nose of raspberry and brown sugar, with some rocks also. Good depth of flavor on its full-bodied frame. Red fruits and very slight herbal flavors. Fruit dominates and secondary characteristics are a bit hard to pick up. This is clearly quite ripe. Mild to moderate ripe tannin on the long finish. Very, very good, though not great.

This wine was crushed by Vieux Donjon 2000. Hard to see where the 95 RP points are? It is very smooth, unfocused, low acid, strawberry milkshake. Next day the wine was better, showing some of that peppery stems and tannins. Felt younger than Donjon - perhaps this is just not ready yet - but I have my doubts.

This was not as good as the last bottle consumed two months ago. More austere tannins and a slightly green finish. The nose, however was wonderfully complex with notes of garrigue, pepper, berries and spices. The wine was popped and poured. Based on my experience with this bottle, I would opt for a short decant as the last glass was significantly better than the first.

Absolutely wonderful wine full of finesse and elegance. Light, but complex nose of garrigue, red berries, pepper and spices. Beautiful and seductive palate, light and delicate with soft tannins and good acidity. An absolutely gorgeous wine with a very long, lingering finish that, although it can be cellared for another 4-6 years, provides immense drinking pleasure at the moment.

I didn't think that this was an awesome showing for this wine. I guess I had expected more eight years in; this was relatively simple, light to medium bodied and didn't send up any fireworks. Tasted rather like a good CdR than a CdP from a fine vintage.

92 pts

Quite tight initially. Later, quite a lot later, it emerges as a rich, ripe, deep and quite traditional Chateauneuf. I really think this benefits from a lot of air right now, much less so than other 2000s I have had. Lovely spicy finish, supported by mineral/acidity rather than tannin. Slightly warm vg+

Light, delicate, and airy-not my usual descriptors of Chateauneuf, but this wine was all of these and more. Transparent light to medium red. Opened with incredibly pure raspberries which leapt out of the decanter. A squirt of tart acidity and a core of deep cherry gave it both focus and brightness. Then, at about 2 hours' time, it revealed itself as a Chateauneuf, with lavender, rosemary, and thyme relegating the fruit to the background. Everything is so subtle and full of finesse here-best Burgundy I've had in a couple of weeks! Little tannin to interfere with full enjoyment now. My only small concern with this wine is whether the fruit faded a bit too fast for a wine of this age. Next time, I'm really tempted to put it (and myself) to the test and insert it as a ringer into a red Burgundy line up. I can see the '05 evolving in a similar fashion, although that wine struck me as more floral than this.

Popped and poured at cellar temp. Initially quite reticent with raisin and prune notes, this took about 30 minutes to start to show its true colors. Quite ripe with a roasted edge, but this does show the soaring raspberry and white pepper notes I expect from this producer. Gorgeous ganache, some garrigue coming through as well. Still seems to want more time or a lot more decanting.

Decanted 2 hours -- fair amount of sediment and 'fully expresive' after about 45 min. Light garnet with some slight browning. Fabulous nose of garrique, cherry, red berries, licorice, spices and smoke. Beautiful flavors on the palate that are focused by its lighter weight and style. Tannins are really soft, but the wine is held together by acidity and mineral. I'm glad for the flurry of CT notes that drew my attention to this wine as these are 'ready to go' but I could conceive that it might develop more aromatics with near term cellaring -- we'll see.

Our first bottle. We were surprised at how accessible it was at this time. The nose was very traditional ChdP, but with only a hint of the barnyard. Under it was fruit and herbs, at least for us. We found it a medium wine, with, as someone else has said, elegance and smoothness but very traditional ChdP features. We are always struck at the fact he uses no wood whatsoever, so what you get is what went into the tank. Will hold up well, but surprisingly accessible. We loved it among our many ChdPs.

Light garnet in color. Raspberries, green pea puree and a touch of pork fat. Not as lush or sweet as I expected – actually is a bit hollow and sharp in the middle. There is certainly a lovely flavor complexity, but it is lacking the flesh to round out the herbaceousness. The nose promises a bit more than the palate delivers. Good, but did not meet expectations. Hopefully, just an off bottle. (87)

Like other 2000 Chateauneufs, this wine has exquisite balance on the nose and palate. Cherry fruit and some element of truffle. The palate is pure cherry fruit all the way right now. Dinner at Bin Wine Cafe (Chicago, IL): Ruby red to purple at the core. Aromatic nose of red fruits, herbs and tar. Decanted 2 hours before bringing it to the restaurant. Then it sat open for about an hour while we had a white with our appetizers. Tasted when first opened and it showed all its potential but had a hard edge and sharp tannins. When poured with our steaks it was soft, full, and round with great balance. The hard edges were gone and replaced with a long and most pleasant finish.

Not decanted. Drank over the course of dinner - more approachable than the 2001 Charvin. Soaring aromatics of minerals, baked red fruits (cherries, strawberries). While still a decent amount of structure, coats the palate. Delicious, delicious, delicious. And will get better for 5+ years and last for 10-15. Great wine. Will finish the 2000s before the 2001s.

Despite two tasting notes that said this was closed, I pulled the cork. The color is as dark and purple as any CdP I have seen. The nose is not at all closed. It is classic CdP with sweet cherry, dried herbs, and briar. The palate very lush and sweet with blackberry, cranberry, spice, and vanilla. The finish is tannic, chalky and endless. Despite the size and obvious concentration, everything is well balanced. This wine is really a monster and needs time. Parker's window showed this opening in 2003. I would guess that this needs 5-6 more years to be fully accesible. Paired well with grilled grass fed New York Strip steaks. 92++

Seattle Tasting Group does Southern Rhône (Seattle, WA, USA): Danger Will Robinson! Initial scored 87. This wine (which I brought) was the single biggest disappointment of the night IMHO. Even with several hours of decanting this sucker was SHUT DOWN. The nose shows a nice dustiness and black cherry, but it was extremely reticent. Very black and closed on the palate with a medium finish. Only Brad had the foresight to call this wine as a great wine that was closed for business, and the rest of us fell in the mid to high 80's. (NOTE: later with another 45 minutes in the glass this definitely improved a great deal and moved to 90 pts.)

Good stuff.

11/5/2015 - Enfant sauvage Likes this wine:

Light-medium ruby, clearly much lighter at the rim. Still viscous. Sweet Grenache garrigue is textbook in the nose. Coming out more with air. In the mouth, all tannins totally resolved.

Popped and poured. Fairly light medium transparent ruby. Muted nose of provencal herbs and minerals. Very smooth, fully mature CdP. This seems to be on a plateau to me. I doubt it will get any better from here. However, it is tasty with a very long finish. Tannins are resolved. Muted grenache fruit, sous bois, with some stoniness, a touch of leather, juicy acidity. My stock of '00's is running precariously low, but I thankfully found a few online to last me a few more years. No hurry to drink these, but no need to wait.

J’ai pensé d’abord au 2002 mais il a plus de volume que le précédent, je croyais ensuite à un 1998 fatigué car je l’avais acheté aux USA donc risque possible.

Still seems to want more time or a lot more decanting.

Had it at Sona last night for dinner. I had never had a Charvin before and I was impressed with the elegance. Very refined, almost burgundian. Smooth, earthy complexity with a long finish. Outstanding.

Dinner at Bin Wine Cafe (Chicago, IL): Ruby red to purple at the core. Aromatic nose of red fruits, herbs and tar. The palate has restrained fruits, fine tannin and low acidity --- summing up to a round and textured mouthfeel. Loads of black licorice and herbs in the long finish. Very nicely done CdP and ready to drink.

Brought to a friend's. Was served without decanting or allowing any breathing time. Was very good, but could have been better.

Dusty cherries on nose; distinctly ripe grenache, high acid on finish. Medium to medium-light body. Nose is fine, perhaps the acidity would work better with food? This wine changed significantly through the night, making me think it needs to sit around

Closed.
Before it closed this was a burgundian beauty that just oozed a balanced bing cherry
and garrique mixture.
Now it is only a shell. Do not touch until 2006.
