Tertiary notes start to come out already. Still a lot of fruits left. Some whiff of green note in the glass. Balanced, classic style. No hint of alcohol or oak. I think 2016 or 2019 GPL blow this one out of the water. There is no point in aging forever when the current vintages are way ahead in quality and sheer enjoyments.

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow": Pauillac and St. Julien (By me @ the factory): In the bouquet still youthful and lactic impressions, blackberries, beautiful oak and cedar. On the palate round red and dark berries, beautiful acidity and round, melting tannin, great length. A pleasure now with enough air time, but will improve with 4+ years of cellaring. 92+

Emirates flight. Beautiful classic Pauillac with layered dark fruit, a touch of graphite and horse stable / leather notes. Good freshness given the cooler vintage. Great with food and on its own

While 2008 is better on the right bank (think of the stupendous Ausone 2008), I vividly remember an absolutely stunning bottle of the 2008 tasted blind 5 years ago (rated 94pts). It was layered with a pleathora of well defined tertiary aromas. This bottle (not from the same cellar or batch), unfortunately, did not have much of that tertiary glory and remained a bit flat. Still a good wine, though.
TN: This is in zone, open and ready with a fine red and dark fruit core and some minerality on the expressive nose and palate. It remains a bit simple overall, but has a fine structure and good balance.
Decanting: No decanting necessary.

Ikke dekantert. Balanse og behag. Meget pen sak, allerede fra første glass. nok syre og taniner til å holde en noe dominerende frukt i sjakk. Super dag 2.

The nose is youthful, yet fresh and balanced with dark red cherries, cranberries, pencil lead, cassis, cedar, spice box, currants, crushed rocks, sweet tobacco, violets, and a hint of black fruits. The Medium/full bodied feel is seamless and filled with youthful verve along with medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. This was decanted for over 8 hours and is still clearly youthful. With decanting, this is open to drink on the younger side as the tannins aren't too punishing at this time.

Part of an ‘08 Bordeaux tasting with Toronto Vintner’s Club. This was the group’s favourite alongside 7 other 08 Bordeaux. Nice use of wood with good structure. Drinking well now.
Coravin fun - Grand Puy Lacoste (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium plus intensity aromas of polished oak, Ribena, toast, a touch of sweet baking spice, a little floral lift and cedar, quite a lot more jubey with time. Juicy, quite cassis on the palate with plenty of cream and oak in support, tannins are drying, floury textured and persistent, a touch of non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Yum.

Pronounced intensity on the nose with blackcurrant, black plum, black cherry, raspberry, graphite, blackcurrant leaf, cedar, vanilla, tobacco and leather. Developing.
Pronounced and dry on the palate with some caramel coming through. High acidity, medium plus body, medium alcohol, high tannins, long finish.
Can drink now but has potential for aging.

It's a great wine and a good Bordeaux. But there's something missing and I don't know what it is. The 'wow factor', excitement. Pleasant nose, very nice palate, great wine, but...

An easy afternoon with close friends; Pauillac and Pessac (@ My place): Dark berries, licorice, vanilla and luxurious oak in the bouquet. On the palate minerals, dark berries, beautiful oak and cedar, firm acidity and tannin. Still too young, but after a long decant showing some of its beauty. Better wait at least another 5 – 10+ years. 92 – 93

Coravin fun - Grand Puy Lacoste (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Black cherry and blackcurrant, slightly jubey notes, a little plum backed by toasted vanilla, sweet spice and a touch of cream...still smells quite primary but there is a sense of power and density. With time a little pyrazine. Juicy, fleshy and beautifully balanced fruit, acid and tannins make this a pleasing experience on the palate. Acid straying to the medium plus intensity, tannins are slightly chalky, sweet spice joins on the long finish. Very pleasant.

Private dinner (Nidau): Decanted an hour before dinner. Pauillac as it should. On the nose lots of tertiary notes and black berries, on the palate full bodied, good freshness, soft tannin, long finish. Very classical, in a good shape now, drink within the next 8 to 10 years.

first nose after opening: intensive black currant - promising more than afterwards delivered
after decanting: a little bit of alcoholics a lot of tannins + toasting good structure but not harmonic now it needs now at least 3 h of decanting to go get a little bit smother
it needs time! - wait 5 Years

Solid wine. No complexity, just a single flavor note, albeit a very pleasant one. We liked the wine, but I certainly don't see us purchasing it again. Much better QPR at this price point.

As directed we gave this a good four hours in the decanter before trying it. The nose is very musty, almost a cave au fromage with some vegetal notes in there, some fruit but quite reserved. Not opulent. After a good hour in the glass it opened up, very smooth tanins, no noticeable acidity but you could tell it's still at the start of the drinking window. We may keep the rest of the case of another year or two before opening any more.

From mag, first of case bought EP. A little foursquare, but good solid claret nevertheless. Plenty of red and black fruit and reasonably well balanced. It’s mature and drinking well. It’s not going to wow though and not the best from this estate.

Solid wine. Did not review at time of drinking, but it was a solid Bordeaux. Did not age as graceful as some, and was a bit surprised that it did not round out as much after 12 years. Might as well drink it if you have it.

Cabernet Bordeaux Vergleich: - 2008 Kirwan: Noch sehr jung. Komplex. Sehr lang. Noch etwas ruppig. - 2008 Grand-Puy Lacoste: Dagegen etwas flach. Süppig. Schön zu trinken. Aber einfach. - 2007 Catena Zapata: Fruchtig. Starke Säure. Lang, aber sehr Mineralität. - 2010 Nenin: Toll. Jetzt schön zu trinken. Lang. Komplex. Sehr anderer Stil als Kirwan. - Für mich sind Kirwan und Nenin die Sieger des Abends.

This is really classy wine, light but so elegant in its dark fruit and muted wood. Not big on the palate, but what is there is of real quality. Everything is so delicately integrated. There is just a hint of bricking in colour, and I wonder whether the finely-tuned fragile palette of this wine will last much longer. I would say it is probably time to drink up.

Deep colour. Tiny bit of bricking. Not the brightest. Lacked freshness or clarity of fruit on the nose. Smokey. Palate quite full but stern. Ususally I expect a bit more elegance and charm from GPL.

Fresh, fragrant nose full of fresh redcurrant, intense mineral, and bricky notes. Pretty succulent palate - not a load of impact but svelte, elegant, and aromatic with a pencil-filled finish. Not a bad 08 at all.

I had this wine some time ago and liked it a lot. This bottle confirmed the first impression. This Grand Puy Lacoste is in a perfect spot today with all tertiary aromatics already there and still enough fruit and tension to balance it out. It's not the most complex wine, rather a lightweight but one to order from the restaurant list without hesitation.
TN: On the nose slight brett, tobacco, Pauillac pencil shavings, dark fruit, slightly stinky but I like that. Medium- weight, density, length. Not the most complex but still very enjoyable and good value for money.
Decanting: No decant needed.

Decanted 4 hrs. Mid weight Pauillac that is really in a good spot right now. Not a rock star, blockbuster, nor the 2nd coming, this is very comfortable in its delivery of gentle cassis fruit that caresses instead of conquers. There certainly is some nice complexities as well, graphite and subtly earthy tones are playfully doing there thing in the back ground. Some tannins for sure, but they are pretty tame and lend the necessary support and structure to make this all work and come together. Sure this could age further, but I’m glad to have drank my last bottle to capture the current state, it really worked for me. Even better, this was purchased for $47ish in 2015.
2008 Puy-Lacoste vs 2008 Feytit-Clinet: - Farbe: P-La klarer, F-C etwas trüb. Beide Schwarzrot und recht konzentriert. - F-C mit roter, süßer Frucht (Kirsche, Pflaume). Auch vielleicht etwas Nelke. Zeder. - Beides tolle Weine. P-L aber klar mehr mein Geschmack.

Light garnet with substantial brickening. Rich and multilayered nose. Blackberries with initial ripe black cherries which subside and reveal underlying tertiary notes as wood floor and similar. Body med light to medium. Well balanced in the mid section and finishes with mouth pluckering tannins.

The wine is showing some signs of aging, which matches its secondary development as you find forest floor, cigar wrapper, cedar wood and softening of the fruit and tannins. The wine is full bodied, juicy, crisp and fresh. You can start drinking this now, but it will be even better if you wait another 5-7 years for more of the tannins to soften.

From memory (we had this over dinner some days ago).
Opened 4 hours before dinner, and the nose kept on developing during dinner. Lovely Pauillac nose with some graphite, wet pipe tobacco. Great sniffing this wine. More lean on the mid palate. Slight heat at the finish, but not a problem with the Chuleton steak we had grilled for an hour on indirect heat on the Weber. This is definitely not something that would appeal to those who like big forward Napa Rolland Cabs. But was excellent with food. There's still some grip, but noticeably soft feel to the tannins. Ready to go in my opinion, with proper aeration. But could easily be cellared for another five years for sure.

Decanted for 90 minutes...Okay I slipped. Shouldn't have opened this...it defo needs te to get some more tertiary characteristics to lend a little complexity. There is some leather and earth playing peek a boo past the cream, slightly unripe cassis and plum sprinkled with sweet spice in a cedar bowl but it is still a little youthful for this palate...a little savoury, wet, chalky tannin helps with protein. Ho hum Day two - stored in the fridge under Argon. Note pretty much as above but the whole is more harmonious. Straying into 'yum' territory for me. Day three - stored in the fridge under Argon. Hmm, with even more time this is gaining weight, length and, oddly enough some creamy richness. Very nice.

Gift from a grateful friend. Poured into decanter and drank over 2+ hours. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour with thin garnet rim. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of fragrant cedar wood, graphite earth, steely stones minerality, woody pencil shavings, red plums, blackberries, slight green herbs, bell peppers, touch of leather and barnyard. Developed. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), smooth medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red plum, blackberries, blackcurrant, red bell peppers, sweet graphite earth, cream cassis, sweet tobacco spice, leather. Sweet juicy sappy medium+ finish. Very good quality. Cool elegant claret that is pretty accessible easy-going now. Open for business, and doesn't really feel like something I would want to age a lot more.

Coravin fun - food matching (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Cassis, cream, vanilla, sweet spice, very polished. Just beginning to show a very slight leather note and some Bovril on the nose. In the mouth it's juicy and quite round with generous cassis driven fruit backed by vanilla oak. Tannins are chamois soft. Very drinkable and, for me, still quite youthful with just the first glimpses of age characteristics.

Surprisingly red-fruited nose, shows a surprising level of oak as well. On the palate, there's a certain medicinal quality to the fruit that's distracting. Somewhat hollow on the mid, not much depth. Seems to be in an awkward place, comes off as disjointed and lacking cohesion.

Decanted for 2-3h. First: Need to say the rest of the group in the tasting loved it. And I admit - this wine is now in the perfect spot for drinking. Horse stable, leather, dark fruit, long and balanced finish. I‘m not a big fan. But a bit plump to be honest. You‘ll find everything you‘re looking for in a Bordeaux - but nothing more. In today’s group, I‘m anti-consensus underwhelmed.

Coravin fun - Burgundy & Bordeaux (Kennards, Waterloo): From Coravin. Ahh, smells like a good quality, moderately posh, Bordeaux Cream vanilla, polished fruit and oak over wet hay, tobacco, leather and cedar. This was a pretty good bottle of Bordeaux - dark fruited, a little tobacco, slightly saline, medium-bodied claret. A civilized glass of wine, very easy to drink (pop and pour). Purchased at my local Wegmans (of all places!) and drinking very well today.
A tad hollow on the mid-back palate, and it is young, but otherwise great - plenty of what I look for in Bordeaux (from the black and red fruits to the leafiness to the iodine to the cedar, and mouthfilling tannins...)

Don't understand why both the pros and CT community continue to underrate this wine. Drinking excellently now, and consistent with my earlier notes. Paulliac to the core - lead pencil, tobacco, hint of eucalyptus. Core of black fruit and sweet fine tannins.

Drank at Augustine's last nite in NYC (Way overpriced there, of course). Lovely nose of black fruit & tobacco. Medium weight, firm & elegant in structure, as opposed to muscular. Lot of blackberries, some cherries, tobacco, green pepper and graphite. Good acidity level, nicely structured, with long finish. Drinking very well this nite. Quite elegant.

I thought I was opening the 2006 so this was a pleasant surprise, quite developed but with fragrance and juiciness lacking in too many 2006 Medoc.
Lovely classic GPL style, currants and green tobacco. 2008 is a nice vintage, forward but that isn't necessarily a bad thing unless you have a cellar full of them and little time to drink them.
Will this get better? I hope it turns really cigar boxy, old claret. There is a slight worry that this is as good as it gets. Best to keep sampling regularly.
13.5% ABV, sealed with cork.

Decided to go ahead and try a bottle. Rather transparent crimson in the glass. Fragrant nose upon opening with a strong Paulliac funk, almost all cab franc like. Had a nice core of red fruit on the palate, bit of stone and flint upon transition to the finish. A little toasty oak still sticks out a bit. Surprising how light the tannins are at <10yrs of age and th acidity gives this a weightless quality on the palate. Solid mid weight bdx, I suspect this will be in a great spot at 12-15yrs from vintage. Today, drinkable and enjoyable, but not as integrated as I would like.

An easy afternoon with close friends; Pauillac, Pomerol, St. Julien (@ My place): In the bouquet ripe dark berry and cherry fruits, tobacco, graphite, red berries, vanilla and rustic flavors. On the palate cassis and other dark fruits, vanilla, graphite, some licorice, good acidity and firm tannin. The wine is still youthful and is not showing much finesse yet, but I have the impression there is potential. 89 – 93. So 91 for this afternoon.

Delicious. Slightly less rich in mouthfeel compared to previous bottle, a bit more elegance and finesse rather than power. Creamy red berries, tobacco and classic Paulliac graphite unfurl on the nose without much prompting. Some hint of sous bois on the nose too. Palate had plenty of red fruits, and unending cassis. Some hint of green and savory character. Fully integrated fine grained sweet tannins. The difference was evident when drank side by side with a run of the mill Cali Cab Sauv. My kind of wine. Excellent. Drink now.

Excellent. Had this at restaurant Odette, paired with roast pigeon. Great Paulliac character that I love. Dark ruby in colour. Dark fruits, graphite, tobacco and hint of vanilla on the nose. Juicy cassis, perfectly ripe fruit, yet good acidity and freshness throughout. Perfect luxurious mouthfeel and laser-like focus on the fruit. Any oak was well-integrated. Super well-balanced. Finish is medium with elegant refined tannins. Drink now.

The second "claret" of the evening from Pauillac. A fairly typical blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Dark ruby red colour. Nose of slightly ripe, black fruits with a touch of spice and pepper. Palate experiences dark berries, some coffee, touch of chocolate and well-represented tannins. A reasonably pleasant blend of power and elegance. We definitely enjoyed the drop, but wondered out-loud if another four years or so would have done her more justice.

The wine looks ruby colored. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like tobacco. Very smooth texture, and light tannins. Not a heavy strong bordeaux, but very elegant with a medium body. Although everything seems to fall in place the aftertaste is rather short. Paired this with some meats on the BBQ, excellent combo.

PnP.

Decanted for 30 min and drank over the following 3h. Needs a bit of air to open up but does not benefit from very long decant. Medium garnet. Nice, fairly subtle nose of forest floor, a touch of cedar and dark fruit. On the palate this is just medium bodied, accurately drawn but a touch lean at times. In terms of (lack of) extraction, sweetness and toast this is the opposite of the 08 D'Issan a few days ago. Some secondary notes of tobacco and leather are just appearing in the background. Tannins are well integrated so don't really see a reason to wait much longer. Medium finish. Nice but not the most impressive 08

During a Pauillac themed wine tasting dinner. Decanted for 1h. Dark ruby. Nose with lots of blue fruit, cassis, pure with some oak in the background. This is medium bodied with good typicity. Not the best GPL I had but for the low price the 2008 vintage carries this is a bargain Paullac that still delivers all the elements of the appellation. This can be picked up still below 50U$.

Decanted for 3 hrs. I expected an especially earthy, acidic or overly tannic Pauillac given the 89 score from Parker. Thankfully, Neal Martins 92 and corresponding note are right on the money. Easy going and supple, the wines black cherry fruit is perfectly matched against subtle sweet tobacco and graphite. While the fruit is the main attraction, it maintains its freshness throughout, lingering well into the finish. Charming and perfect to drink now and over the next 5 years while your more structured vintages sleep away. And most impressive, this was just $45 at Seattle's McCarthy and Schiering. Well done.

Dark ruby color turning crimson at the rim with a nose of dark berries, leather, smoke and tobacco. The palate is full-bodied with a silky texture and bright acidity. Flavors of black currant, darkly-toasted vanilla, tar, and cedar form the core. Elegantly balanced and delightful. Finishes long on refined tannins on the tail-end with a hint of earth.

Flight 1, Bordeaux, Wine 6 (blind): The wine was very dark ruby in colour and offered floral notes, violet, blackberry, cassis, cedar wood, leather, some gamy notes and some oak aromas on the nose. On the palate the medium-bodied wine showed blackberry, cherry, cassis, leather, some bell pepper and some gamy and oaky notes, paired with medium-plus acidity medium-plus ripe, well-integrated tannin and very good length.

From half-bottle. We decanted the wine for two hours before we poured the first glass. It was medium- to dark ruby in colour and offered a shy nose of cherry, blackberry, black currant, cedar, vanilla and cocoa. The palate started sweet, with cherry, blackberry, black currant, plum, gravel, spices, vanilla, tobacco and cocoa, paired with medium-plus acidity, medium-plus fine tannin and very good length. The medium-bodied wine was very balanced. A lovely Pauillac for mid-term drinking. I would buy again at reasonable prices.

medium body, comes out a bit more brick and maroon, great nose, positively Pauillac. Medium bodied, elegant mouth feel, slight cedar, pencil lead, cherries, Wow this starts of strong. Though an ever so slight hollow mid palate, after a few hours turns shy, but then comes back with a vengeance after hour 3+. Needs a little more time to sort itself out, but silky and approachable already. I really enjoyed this wine.

A private lunch (Restaurant The Fat Duck ***, Bray-on-Thames, UK): The oak is slightly caramelly and still a bit dominant, but the blackcurrant fruit convinces, the texture is satiny, medium-weight, sleek, ripe tannins, not very deep, seems quite soft for a young Pauillac, good length. Not easy to predict where this is going but a lovely drink already.
That typical cedar blackberry thing going on on the nose. Bay leaf and rosemary on the palate next to ripe berries. Pretty young but enjoyable after a splash in the decanter. Will improve and be pretty good in 5 years or more. Long finish.

08 Château Grand Puy Lacoste. This château, which takes its name from the high sloping, gravelly terroir, produced a lighter than usual style of wine in 2008. Similar to the 2001, with a blend of 69% cabernet sauvignon, 28% merlot, and 3% cabernet franc, this cassis, cedar, and spice perfumed wine is a bit restrained. It finishes with fresh blackberry flavors. 89-91 Pts

Medium almandine with medium bricking.
Powerful aromas of chocolate and barnyard, cedar and dill with a hint of minerality. But It really has that manure smell.
Medium body. Soft texture and modest presence.
Flavours of rich black fruit and powerful oak.
Drinks young but I’m not sure this has much potential.

Ho hum
Day two - stored in the fridge under Argon. Note pretty much as above but the whole is more harmonious. Straying into 'yum' territory for me.
Day three - stored in the fridge under Argon. Hmm, with even more time this is gaining weight, length and, oddly enough some creamy richness. Very nice.

Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour with thin garnet rim. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of fragrant cedar wood, graphite earth, steely stones minerality, woody pencil shavings, red plums, blackberries, slight green herbs, bell peppers, touch of leather and barnyard. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), smooth medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red plum, blackberries, blackcurrant, red bell peppers, sweet graphite earth, cream cassis, sweet tobacco spice, leather. Sweet juicy sappy medium+ finish.
Very good quality. Cool elegant claret that is pretty accessible easy-going now. Open for business, and doesn't really feel like something I would want to age a lot more.

Excellent.

To state "I dont like it" is probably a bit too much but - it is really not up to its normal level in 08 - a huge disappointment...

Drink now with a 1-hr decant.

A bit close on the nose with some red fruits. Blueberry, cherry and a hint of vanilla on the palate. Medium to full bodied. Very enjoyable. I prefer this one than La Gravette de Certan 2009 on the same night.

Quite bright appearance. Something soapy with some bright red fruit on the nose. Some cream, touch of nutmeg, some blueberry. Very smooth attack, creamy fruit. Still quite strong oak yet to integrate. A little bit short on the finish and not the most complex but delicious. Some secondary notes already developing a little cedar

decanted > 1 hr and drank over 1+ hrs.
it was a bit closed on both nose and palate initially, it opened up very nicely over 1hr and drinking well toward the end as it is less edgy on palate.
nose of leather, tobacco, cedar. and medium tannin and finishing. good value drink.

Coffee, earth, blackberry and tobacco notes open to a wine that still wants a few more years in the cellar to shed its tannins. The wine ends a peppery, cassis filled finish.

Slow-O 3 hours, served non-blind. Pretty straightforward aromatics and flavors, but leaves me with a sense that interesting things may well lie inside given proper bottle rest. Right now it's enjoyable, but mostly unremarkable. Re-visit in 6-7 years.

medium body, comes out a bit more brick and maroon, great nose, positively Pauillac.

Bottle from a case that stayed a bit too long in a hot car, but is drinking well. 1st day a bit steely but open to business. 2nd say joyful feeling to it, cool vintage character. Drying tannins but not overly so. Sour feeling too (do not expect residue sugar in this), which anyhow gives me hopes of potential for future.Should come together nicely.

Sweet red berries and smoke on the nose. Red berries like lingonberry and cranberry 1st day. Assured and dependable. Not to pronounced acidity. 2nd day slightly blacker fruits but retaining the red character. Long. Mid-weight. Reminds of Leoville Barton, but not quite as silky.

89-91 Pts
