This is the 3rd bottle we've opened, at 2-3 year intervals, and the best by far. The tannins are very strong and somewhat overpowering for the fruit, but overall the wine is delicious. I get plums, cherries and vanilla on the nose, with hints of herbs - maybe a little anise? The taste is mildly astringent with tannins, but fruity and complex. The finish is long, ending with slightly bitter notes along with the lingering cherries and some warm spice, perhaps cinnamon. We'll save the last 3 in our cellar for another 5 years or so.

Daniel's White Truffle Birthday Lunch (Otto Y Mezzo, Alexander House, Landmark, Central, Hong Kong): My contribution. Dark, brilliant jewelled semi-transparent ruby. Nose is immediately seductive but in an unexpected alpine cheese first note before some beautifully subtle alpine berries cut in. Wow, this really is unfolding into multiple layers very quickly. It would have been better with a 2-hour decant.. as it proved two hours after pouring...but the sommelier at Michelin*** Otto Y Mezzo overruled me (Lesson = trust your judgement over a sommelier). Palate is lightly jewelled red/black fruit but overbalanced by still too young tannin. Very promising resonance and reverberance on the finish and it improves but not enough to merit opening a bottle for another 5-8 years. 91 but will go to 94-95 at its apogee.
I would love to decant my next bottle for 5-8 hours.

Showing well. Smelled of Madeira at first. Needed an hour in a decanter. Supple, still with a touch of tannin and balanced acidity that give it some grip. Licorice and cherries in a long finish. Very good. This is fully mature. Drink up. Now - 2028. From a 750ml.

Decanted for 2 hours. A bit of VA, rose petals and cherry on the nose. Rich palate, very young and primary, dusty tannins on the finish. Young with the potential to improve with time.

New Year's Day Double Blind Tasting (Atlanta, GA): Unblinded. This came towards at the end of the evening so some palate fatigue had set in. However, I found this to be much more open and approachable then the last time I had it back in 2016. Time in bottle has been a friend to this wine. Decanted for 2 hours prior to serving.

Utviklet på farge. Mursteinrød mot orange rød. Kraftig aroma. Roser, lær, svisker og krydder. Komplekst med marsipan og pepper. Tørr og stram, Tjære og lær. Blyantspiss. Lakris. Etter en stund mer sødme. Denne sitter lenge.

The Gang Drinks Blind (Mesa Verde Country Club in the OC): Served blind as part of a 2001 Italian flight. This is floral and perfumed. The core of the wine showed spicy and tannic with crushed berry, charcoal and good tang. These well-built Italian wines seem like they can last forever.

Everything I love about Nebbiolo is found in this wine; dark violets, red rose petals, black tea, new leather, juicy red & black plums, and a firm tannic grip. Barolo’s iron-rich terroir is also in abundance, it really stands out and grabs my attention. Brick red and still energetic at 20 years old; it may last another 5 years.

Pop and pour without decant. Cork in perfect shape. Opens up after 30 mins in glass. Raspberry, licorice with a hint of oak on the nose. Tannic structure still in tact, quite dry on the palate. This is a well made Barolo, refined and modern without losing its character.

Made in an international style with some Nebbiolo aromas amidst vanilla and leather. A beautiful wine, but oaked Nebbiolo is not my preference. Fell short after a Produttori Montefico 2008.

My reactions to Scavino are always complicated. These are often fabulous wines, great structure, pure, clear fruit, depth, tannin, mouthfeel. But you have to take them for what they are. If I judged them again classic Barolo criteria, I'd be more critical. But they are great to drink. I thought about selling them off as my tastes changed toward the traditional, but I'm glad I didn't. Digging into them has given me a chance to appreciate them for what they are.
Opened 3 bottles at 10 am and let them slow ox until 4:00 then decanted. Back into the bottles for a 7:00 dinner. The color is still very dark and the nose was just screraming of cherries. As it sat in the glass it just go better and better. Really typical barolo. Tar roses earth and more cherries. It was the wine of the night. We also had Cos '09, which just shut down in the glass and in about 10 years will be incredible. Also opened a double mag of Il Marroneto Madonna delle Grazie '05. This was extremly good but probably needs another few years to really shine.

At first look some bricking around the edges but the color seemed to deepen with air. A nice mouthful of sous bois, leather, fresh blue fruit, anise and a bit of tannin left in the finish. Drink now but still has some life.

The nose was restrained at first, but once it began to open, there was no stopping the ‘01 Bric del Fiasc. Here I found a vibrant mix of mineral-drenched, sweet black cherries with brown spices and dried roses. On the palate, it was silky yet poised, with medium-bodied creamy textures contrasted by tart red berry fruits, caking minerality and a savory, herbal twang. The finish was medium-long as hints of fine tannin resonated on the senses, against a backdrop of lingering spiced cherry and mineral tones. This was easily one of the best 2001 Barolos that I’ve had the opportunity to taste; balanced, elegant, refined and structured all at the same time.

I had a completely different experience that DrWine2001.
On the first coravin pour this was 100% ready. Bricking at the edges. Very fruit forward black cherry almost candied, menthol and cocoa and a slight underbursh (but not oak). Decanted half the bottle night one and it stayed pretty well for a several hours before tailing off. Full bodied without a hint of astringency, medium acid, with firm muscular but fine tannins. One of the few bottles I've had evolve with good coravin practices when opened again the following night.
Can't speak to the provenance of the bottle as it was an auction acquisition, but this bottle was ready. Though the cork looked to be in great shape. Personally, I can't see a reason to wait on this if having with food with and/or a short decant. Frankly the tannin may outlast the fruit.

has shed some of its youthful brute power. Menthol and cherry with no oak evident (for oakaphobes). May still be early to completely judge this but some of the fruit profile comes across a bit candied and I wouldn't be hugely optimistic of great upside, but admittedly i dont have huge experience of BdF this age. Certainly better than the 1998 and 2000 though. 91 pts

Very deep hued for Nebbiolo. This really was a perfect illustration of the benefits of decanting, although if I had to do it again, I would have decanted this in the morning. Out of the bottle, thin, fruitless, and astringent. At around the one hour mark, developing black cherry fruit. At 2 hours, menthol and fennel layered onto the fruit-the first hint of secondary aromatics. Still quite a musclebound wine with fabulous acidity, a bit of espresso, and toothsome tannins. Excellent but still dominated by its structure 3 hours into its journey. Honestly, this wine seems no more than halfway toward full maturity, and I wonder how much charm it will gain along the way.

I like couple of the other tasting notes. This is a modern style wine which has turned old style in taste. And this bottle was infanticide. Even though it is 15 years old, this was just too young. Don't open for another 5 years at least and it will last much longer. And then it should be superb, as the fruit is deep and will truly evolve as the (now tough) tannins get resolved. Very glad I have a couple of these left.

Decanted for 2 hours. Dark youthful appearance, hesitant initial nose which after two hours opened up to reveal dark cherry fruit, tobacco and floral notes. Palate of deep cherry and spices wrapped in a silky textured frame, tannins resolving, balance and finish pleasantly engaging. This Barolo continues to evolve nicely

After 3 hours in the decanter, this wine is still a brute. Nose is much better than the finish, but the grippy tannin is still to much to handle. If you drink it now, make sure to have it with a heavy fatty meal like Osso Bucco. Still needs time on the bottle... Try again in 5-10 years.

Seth's 40th Blowout (Cumming, GA): Deep crimson with pale rim; great nose, floral, roses, currants, sweet fruit, slight candy, oak, medicinal edge, sandalwood; fine but firm tannin, all red fruit, long, medicinal, very young, slight boxwood or piney note; thought this was a modern wine that has proved to be very traditional with age so I called '01 Gaja Costa Russi.

Color is classic, light ruby with a brick tone. Big nose that wows. 95+ on nose alone. Plum, dark cherry, graphite, mint. Big mouthful of dark cherry that lingers. Very good stuff, but with the big tannins that are still there I'd say it's only just barely entering its window with many good years ahead. 2015-2030?

Doesn't have the roasted tobacco thing on the nose to me. Not a ton on the nose but it was just opened. We think its going to be coming up. And then a seamless, gorgeous palate that has beautiful tannins. The tannins due of course take over in the end, of course, but not in a way that just shuts down the fruit.

Ready to drink with my fresh white truffles and fettuccine- and then slipped through my finger; broken. All over my garage floor where I stored the truffles... The garage is now redolent with Barolo and white truffle... I sat in a chair for 30 minutes absorbing the aromas. Oh well.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with high acidity and very chewy tannins. The structure is a bit unyielding, but that doesn't hide the class of dark red cherries, licorice, tar, anise, roasted herbs, dark red fruits, strawberries, and some incense on the back end. This had the classic starting lighter on the attack and exploding on the back end.
Overall: As good as this was, this can get better. The depth and class is there, but the structure was holding it back a bit.

Do they last forever? Well here is a prime example - lots of dark red cherry fruit on the nose mixing with a chocolate like aroma. Frankly, in a wonderful spot. The tannins are still strong and there is a hint of softness towards the back of the palate. Delicious. Definitely start drinking (if you haven't already) because it is in prime form. The tannins would suggest it can age for many more years but I wonder if the fruit will hold up?

Dark ruby. Nose of licorice, plum, tar, fennel, floral notes. Spicy and shot with vanilla oak, which covered the lovely plum and strawberry fruit like a blanket. Tar and pepper on the finish. Tannins fine-grained and smoothed off, acidity ample. Quite polarizing as some were quite enthused and others turned off.

White Truffle Dinner (Domani Restaurant, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong): Fully opaque black-red core lightening to slight bricking at the meniscus. Nose is light and perfumed, a lovely high note of semi-dried nail varnish after most of the acetone has blown off, sultry black and red fruits. Palate is much better.....beautiful balance, grace and poise. Surprisingly resolved tannins for a relatively young wine...powdered tannins. Beautiful reverb and resonance with an absolutely classic Barolo finish of dry red brick dust. Superb. 92-93.

A solid, classic example of Barolo probably deserving of a higher score; crimson core with copper edge; nose of menthol, tar, sweet cherry, iron, and some rose; very balanced on the palate, reminded me of a balanced and resolved Clerico Ciabot Mentin Ginestra, softer tannin, cherry, classic through and through; well done and will stay in this phase for many years to come, in the beginning stages of its drinking window.

beautiful nose of balsamic, forest floor, and earth. tannins are getting finer. what is really striking about this wine is the depth of fruit, length and absolutely beautiful balance. while still considered young by most cognoscenti, this barolo provided me with great pleasure. i enjoy modern producers more on the young side as older examples completely fall apart for me. great showing.

Pretty nice tonight but could easily benefit from 5yrs more blt age. Quick double decant and then open for 2 hours at restaurant before tasting. Oak is starting to integrate well revealing a promising glimps of the palate fruit and classic balsomic /fruit aromas. Fresher and more focused like many great 2001s. Pretty happy with this wine and glad to have a few more for the future. Scott bought from me so just got a small taste. One of the best wines tonight.

Terroir-istes International - Italy-Piedmont-Barolo-Sandrone & Scavino (Rodwell House): Pale garnet with wide Orange rim. Attractive perfume with roses, jasmine. Mix of primary fruit: plum, black fruit alongside more developed notes of medicinal, tarry characters. Palate shows lots going on although unconventional notes of menthol and iodine, medicinal characters add intrigue. A wine in development, complex and showing multidimensional fruit layers. Very fine texture, depth of fruit with a very long finish and firm, powdery tannins. Great wine albeit contentious.

Popped and poured, finished 1/2 the next day. Nose shows pleasing balsamic and dried flowers aromas. (Note: this was popped and poured). This was a completely diffferent wine than when had in 2007. Not sure it's bottle variation, not enough air or just that it is closed (I don't think it was badly stored or corked) but it just did not deliver. Knowing how it was in 2001 I am even reticent to post a full note, but the nose was muted and the taste shortish - it was a nice enough drink (especially with the truffle dishes) with some barolo flavours but not the powerful explosive wine I remembered. Maybe try again in 3-4 years or better luck with the next bottle. Did not improve over 2 hours+.

Just about everyone writing notes on this wine are nuts...this thing rocks. One of the wines of the year for me. Feminine, amazing graceful like Audrey Hepburn (or Kiera Knightly in today's terms). Unreal nose of everything you could ask for in a barolo. Great mouthfeel, long finish. Amazing with any food you would throw at it. Really singing. This is what keeps wine interesting.

We drank the bottle I referred to above last night. Beautiful wine. Such clarity in the color of the wine! I found whatever wood Enrico used to be totally integrated. The bouquet was classic Castiglione Falletto -- Dark, plummy, slightly balsamic fruit backed by a distinctive minerality, a very fine note of steel with none of the redder, rustier note that you get say in Bussia fruit. The wine was quite large scaled but the balance was impeccable. I found an elegance and finesse in this powerful wine at this stage that was compelling, perhaps slightly lighter footed than earlier great efforts at this stage of its developed. Called to mind his 90, but not as massive. Some of this elegance I attribute to the vintage but a fair amount has to be attributable to Enrico's tremendous dedication to his winemaking (and his patrimony) and the benefits of the significant investment he made in his winery in the early 90s. Altare once told me that no one is more dedicated to his Barolo winemaking than Scavino, and this bottle surely confirmed that observation.

Decanted one hour. Ruby red, no sediment. Nose of spice and dark fruit with a hint of licorice. A little tight (still an infant), but nice and balanced with tart black fruit, dried cherries and more licorice on the palate. Tannins are just a little sharp, but balanced well with the perfect acidity. Will be a stunner after another couple years. Must try to resist opening another. Went nicely with broiled top sirloin and saffron pilaf.

Subtle nose of oak and light spice. On the palate, spicy, with red / balck fruit. Solid underlying acidity. Very nice, but still a bit flasy for me. That said, this is a young wine, and I would expect this to integrate with time in bottle. Tonight, I found the 2001 Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca, tasted side by side (see TN), to be head and shoulders above this wine.

Deep crimson. Upon opening tight as a nun's... After a couple of hours in the decanter it started to open up with dark fruits, cherries, some licorice, vioiolets, roses and tar but still felt rather restrained. On the palate dense fruit, cherries, cranberries, tea, some menthol? Concentrated and long with mouth-puckering tannins. Too young naturally, not completely unapproachable now but should be great after 2010. Great potential but seems closed up right now. 92 points for now. I've saved half a botte in the fridge for sampling over the next couple of days.
Edit: Followed this wine over a couple of days, tasted best on the 4th day with an astonishing floral very sensual nose that had me sniffing it all night. Tannins softened although still very abundant, the palate didn't quite match the nose. This bodes very well for the future, see you next time on the other side of 2010.

i tasted this wine about a month or two ago, and the taste of that wine stayed with me. enough that i recently bought a couple more bottles. it is a massive wine. tannic and backwards, but full of classic nebbiolo flavors - tar, licorice, etc. in general, i tend to prefer more traditional producers (longer macerations, open top fermations with manual punchdowns, aging in big slovian oak casks, etc.), but this wine has me rethinking some of those thoughts. it is truly a beautiful barolo, capable of aging for a long time (although i have yet to try an older scavino). it was very primary and huge in the mouth, but i have high hopes for this wine in a number of years.

Terroir a Confronto: Brunello & Barolo 2001 (Alba, Italy): Garnet, slightly denser. Closed and only developed a little balsamic character over time. Acidic, sweet sensation, slightly rough tannins. Big wine, masculine and muscley. Needs years.

BBQ Mendo and gang--whooooaaaahhhhh... loads of molten tarry licorice, espresso, mocha, rich warm wet earth. Tannic and young, but a seductive wine nonetheless.

Decanter Great Italian Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark Hotel, London NW1): Solid red with a bright purple core. The nose has sweet, rich, lucious qualities with emphasis on mint and herbs. Also a slight doughy quality. The palate shows juicy fruit, especially plum, spices and flowers.

Fabulous, complete Barolo. Beautiful balance, restrained but ample fruit buttressed by well integrated tannins. The only thing wrong with this wine was its youth.

I tried this wine at the WS Grand Tour in Las Vegas about 2 months ago. A sweet floral nose. There seemed to be more fruit on the nose than on the palate indicating that the wine will need some time to open. Dry with notes of black fruit and currant. Lean finish. 91 points.
