Tidied this up after it called to me from the fridge...A very gentle decant and then consumed over an hour or so. This was pretty much fully mature, a littlle red and bllack fruit was dilute and fresh, tannins a whisper, plenty of sous bois, herbaceous notes and a little cedar completed the picture. I had it with some mature cheddar which was a terrible match and did a disservice to the wine, shame on me.

Coravin fun - Belgrave & Brane Cantenac (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Leather, toast, earth, red over black berry fruit, sweet spice, a herbaceous underpin, slight Autumnal notes and a touch of blood/iron. Medium plus intensity acidity, meaty, savoury, tomato and tomato leaf, talc textured tannins, a little sweet fruit underpin, a touch out of whack. Hmm.

From Coravin. Pretty, slightly dried out, blackberry, brambles, earth, leather, sweet spice, Autumn leaves and wet earth. With time there is a little red currant. Juicy, savoury, slightly sour brambles, leather, tannins are silky, drying and persist beneath this. All travel long. Okay but not as good as the last bottle I had.

I do love off-vintages. Maybe it's the low expectations but they always seem to be a pleasant suprise. Woody nose. Quite tertiary. But still has some fruit. Fully integrated. Medium plus acidity. Medium bodied. For RA birthday

Soooo 1984 is meant to be a fairly lousy vintage - I've read 'worst vintage of the decade' from some reviewers - which made this an awfully pleasant surprise. Juicy, leathery, red and black fruits, a little tannin, pretty, really very lovely. I hope the other bottle shows as well as this...
