First of three from auction, pristine cork. Decanted off moderate sediment. black fruit, black cherry, cedar, and lots of graphite and wet gravel. Medium bodied, medium+ acidity and chewy tannins. Early maturity, drinking well now with minimal decant. Very nice.

I love this vintage of Montrose. It is a beautiful claret that is singing right now. While it will benefit from a decant, it is drinking wonderfully straight out of the bottle. This is a classic Bordeaux that does not disappoint. Wonderful.
Another 2004 horizontal (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Bonus glass from the other table. In contrast to the VCC, this bottle was clearly correct, thus convincing me that the one I tried a couple of weeks ago was indeed faulty. Forest fruits and oak on the nose. Really lovely on the palate, with oodles of red fruit and plenty of framing structure and tannin - another 10 or more years of pleasure to come from these, I'd say.

Jonathan’s 2004 Bordeaux (Hawksmoor, Guildhall, London): This again has lovely, pure, almost noble blackcurrant fruit on the nose, as sense of smoke and mineral too, cedar. Quite youthful. Medium/full bodied, dark fruit, cedary, fresh acids with some grippy tannin still on the good length finish. Excellent.

Bordeaux 2004 20 years on Part 2 (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Spot on, a far better bottle than in March, less austere and more pliant, without the hint of greenness that some thought was present. This is nicely open, with rich and deep seam of dark blue cool fruit, very moreish indeed. After the last bottle I wasn't sure this could ever deliver but this is emminently drinkable whilst staying on the side of straight-laced. Delicious. My #2 WOTN.
