  • This is a birth-year wine for me. I didn’t know what to expect from this 36-year-old Napa Pinot, and my fears were heightened when the cork ended up being somewhat damp and gungy (although it ultimately came out without breaking into pieces). I was pleasantly surprised with the wine, which is still alive but undoubtedly past its peak. The wine is a light-medium red that is consistent to the rim – no browning and virtually no sediment in the bottle. The nose carries savory olives, pine, and a pile of leaves in autumn. In the mouth, this initially had an odd sweet cherry flavor, but that smoothed out over time. The finish is the most weathered aspect of the wine – smacking of acid and alcohol. Overall, I was amazed this wine is still going and drinkable. There wasn’t much in the way of varietal character, but it certainly brings most of the traits of a well-aged red to the party. No formal score due to the lack of any basis for comparison.
