  • Pinot at Jim's (Jim's): Solid but far less attractive than the 1982 regular because of excess tannins I have liked this wine in the recent past but it has lost all grace.

  • The cork was in great shape (I did use an Ah So to extract it) and the wine had almost no ullage. The color was red tea but still very acceptable after 32 years. The nose is complex and slightly dominated by notes of brown sugar, but underneath it is all classic Pinot. The balance is slightly flat and the tannic structure is completely resolved. It is glorious and I wish I was sharing it with a someone who thought CA PN could not age because this is real example of a counterpoint. Storage of this bottle has been from the winery warehouse to my cellar 29 years ago. Other notes is that this was a period that Tim Mondavi experimented with retaining some stems during the fermentation. The alcohol is 13.5%.

  • Horrible cork - a bit depressed, dry, crumbly and difficult to extract. The nose makes up for it though - pure, forthcoming tertiary laden Pinot scents. Dry, stylish, earthy, with sassafras/cola notes adding to the ripe, warm cherries. Fungal and sous bois profile, along with the classic brown sugar wash of well matured ripe pinot noir. Still retaining remnants of acidic structure (fading though) and very resolved but still present mouth drying and appetite inducing talc-like tannins. A brilliant wine, certainly past its prime (unless you're English :-), but still superb. A legacy. Roberto, we miss you! 92pts pure quality, 96pts personal pleasure and preference.
