Community Tasting Notes (7) Avg Score: 85.8 points

  • Wine was opened about 3 hours ago, tasted @ ~60F from a Syrah glass.
COLOR: 5/5 - Pleasing burgundy color with a bit of bricking around the edges.
NOSE: 11/15 - Initial dose of alcohol at opening blew off, leaving strong cherry cola behind with some blueberry. Underlying aromas of something volatile/chemical (autobody paint, vinyl, ?fruity?); not offensive, just curious.
FLAVOR: 7/10 - Early flavors of licorice and blueberry have morphed into more of a smokey dark berry melange.
FINISH: 7/10 - Smooth, clean finish that builds into apple, blueberry, black raspberry, swelling nicely.
POTENTIAL: 2/5 - Will likely remain drinkable for the foreseeable future, but I suspect this at or past its peak.
OVERALL: 3/5 - Good, interesting wine overall. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill Zin. Alcohol seems restrained and the flavors aren't showing the typical fruit-bomb you might expect. This paired very nicely with a Rosemary-crusted pork loin and roasted potato dinner. I liked this better than 85 points, so I'll call this 85+. Better 'potential' would put this around 87 where I'd put it as a 'gut rating.'

  • A garnet color with pretty and complex nose of rhubarb, pomegranate, cherry, and sassafras. Flavors however were more candied and reminiscient of cherry cough syrup. Some anise notes came on on the long finish. Alcohol too was a bit perceptible as well. This wine did work a little better with food than on its own.

  • Decanted for an hour. Muted nose of strawberries, a little spice, and oak. Sour (and I mean SOUR) cherries, thin mouthfeel, with a good dose of alcohol to light your fire, and a strong herbal bitter finish. If you like Zin of this style, go for it. To me this was one of the worst Zins I have had in the last couple years. Certainly makes me wonder if I had a bad bottle relative to GV's review, but the cork and bottle were perfectly intact, and so I have scored it accordingly. Will never buy again, especially at 22 bones.

  • Grape on the nose, med-light bodied, with strawberry jolly-rancher and sour cherry, but fiarly smooth, not spicy. pretty good.

  • nice color, followed by berries on the nose. The wine was extremely smooth. On the palate, the berries were very evident, but it had a very sweet finish. There was also some sediment in the bottle, so be ready for it. Too sweet for me. A nice smooth zin. This is a fine example of what Zinfandels could become with some age.

(SKY ZINFANDEL MOUNT VEEDER) #2; COLOR-dark; NOSE-beautiful dark components, grape Big League chew, raspberry syrup; TASTE-great acidity, luscious mouthfeel, complex, beautiful blackberry component, this is a food wine - NOT a fruit bomb, structured & complex, some heat, overlaid with chocolate, bright strawberries, then finishes w/ good sour cherries, nice rich finish; I like this "Old World" ZIN a lot, good wine; GV-90
