Bienvenue a Champagne; 4/20/2023-4/29/2023 (Les Crayeres, various restaurants, Les Avises and a many wonderful producers): With such an amazing wine list it is a bit of a surprise to go back but this was so good the first time we had it that we figured why not again with the rest of our friends. Similar in style. It didn’t really need the decant. Was opened for business almost from the beginning and stayed that way the whole evening. All feral and meaty and gamey and wonderfully what you’d expect from a Jamet. I was impressed again. In a sweet spot for sure.

Bienvenue a Champagne; 4/20/2023-4/29/2023 (Les Crayeres, various restaurants, Les Avises and a many wonderful producers): I thought maybe this wine could live forever but I am learning maybe 25 years is the sweet spot. At least this poured with a nose that jumped out of the glass and then it was lovely the entire time and still great but not necessarily better than it was originally. All meat, pan drippings, acid, and structure. Beautiful. I could drink this ever night and twice on Tuesday. But it’s in that spot now.

There was some good company on the table, including a very good ‘01 Chave, but this Cote Brune dispatched them all and it wasn’t very close. This had an extra gear of bright, energetic lift to its core that was compelling on its own. Combined with the correct, fresh fruit flavors and intricate spices and perfume, it’s clearly extra special stuff. I haven’t sampled them all, particularly in the northern rhone, but this is the best I’ve had.
Tasted next to the 1988 Cote-Rotie. This is a massive wine and much darker toned than the 88. Dark fruit, olives, and meat are beautifully intertwined on the nose along with a lovely pine needle note. The palate has more of the same flavors and good acidity and is well balanced with a good amount of grippy tannins. Very long finish. Just outstanding and captivating and while it was drinking beautifully it will probably continue to improve over time. Maybe a tiny step behind the 88 today, but I think it will surpass that wine in 5-10 years. 97+

Single blind in a flight with Jamet Cote Rotie 98 and Guigal Turque 98. The two Jamet's were almost fungible. I think you could go back and forth and if someone swapped the glasses there wouldn't have been a telling between them. Not a bad thing as both beautiful wines. Much softer and more developed than the still primary Turque. If trying to find the difference between the Jamets the Cote Brune was possibly with a bit more tannins. Both very classic and soft interpretation of Cote Rotie in a lovely vintage compared to the more mighty Turque.
