Powerhouse of a Riesling and showing superbly - lots of tertiary smoky, honeycomb, and other savoury notes around the ripe white fruited core here, conveying richness (as ZH typically does) but also a sense of finesse on the palate with a spine of acidity giving it good lift. Great wine.

This has gone past dark gold into sort of a caramel color, and while I’m used to the deep colors of aged Zind-Humbrecht this looks quite advanced. On the palate, though, it’s still hanging in there with preserved orange rind, tart peaches, and a nice smokiness. There is some residual sugar but it is well covered by the abundant acidity and it’s fairly dry for this particular producer, probably Indice One although they hadn’t started using that labeling when this was bottled. Good but definitely on the way downhill.

The Rotating Dinners, I.8: Alsace (Chicago, IL): This was overshadowed, alas, by the incredible Clos Häuserer, but was still a solid riesling in its own right. The nose was relatively smoky, and this is in a leaner, less exuberant style, though this still had some very nice acidity to go with it. Less sweet and leaner, with some really nice brown-sugar-dusted pineapple on the finish.

WCC Blind Alsace Kaiseki Dinner (Shogun Sushi and Sake Bar, Delmar, NY): Stunningly complex. Another terrific wine. Why don't I drink more of these. A touch of botrytis, but pretty dry, just adds to the complexity. [Sad to say, this was my last bottle.]

Beautiful caramel notes show it’s age. It’s ready hanging on probably will not improve. Fun experience.
