Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • From a magnum. 12,5% alcohol.

Medium-deep lemon-yellow color. The nose feels similarly oxidized than in the vintage 1980 that was tasted alongside, only with less intensity: the wine feels nutty, somewhat flat and quite aldehydic with aromas of sorrel, some green apple slices and a hint of mushroomy character. The wine is medium-bodied, dry and quite aldehydic yet still relatively balanced on the palate with flavors of nut paste, some dried Granny Smith apple, a little bit of beeswax, a hint of lemony citrus fruit and a touch of aged leathery character. The mouthfeel is somewhat oily, but the moderately high acidity lends good balance to the wine. The finish is bright and lively with very long and quite oxidized flavors of lemony citrus fruits, some wizened green apples, a little bit of aged mushroomy character, an oxidized hint of walnuts and a touch of sorrel.

A rather similar wine to the vintage 1980: pretty oxidized and too old for its own good. Must've been a lot better 10-15 years ago. I prefer not to mark the wine as flawed/oxidized, because the wine really wasn't faulty - only performing pretty much like one would expect a Sauvignon Blanc at 35 years of age to perform.
