Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • Pale burnished golden color. Very old, tertiary and nutty nose with aromas of chopped walnuts, smoke, sorrel, some mushroomy tones, a little bit of dried leaves, an oxidative hint of green almonds and a touch of dusty old furniture. The wine is dry, old and quite oxidative on the palate with flavors of sorrel, some tangy Fino Sherry, a little bit of salted walnut, light umami notes of mushrooms, a saline hint of aldehydic sharpness and a touch of bruised Granny Smith apple. The age has made the mouthfeel quite concentrated and oily, but the overall feel is very bright and electric, thanks to the noticeably high acidity. The finish is remarkably long, lively and pretty oxidized with dry flavors of chopped nuts, mushroomy umami, some sorrel, a little bit of developed waxiness, a hint of lemony citrus fruit and a touch of tangy character that reminds me of yeasty Flor character of Manzanilla Sherries.

A bright and sharp but also very old and quite oxidized Pouilly-Fumé - the wine tastes more like a Vin Jaune than a Sauvignon Blanc. A fascinating experience, for sure, but getting too old to offer much in the way of pleasure. Must've been a lot better 10-15 years ago. I prefer not to mark the wine as flawed/oxidized, because the wine really wasn't faulty - only performing pretty much like one would expect a Sauvignon Blanc at almost 40 years of age to perform.
