Sunday Night Dinner (Paris Club - Chicago, IL): I shared the sentiment of others when I had serious doubts at first that this was actually pinot. Jason thought it had more of a port-like tone to it and I thought there must be some petite sirah in there. After letting it sit in the glass a bit, some of the roasty tones faded and more classic pinot notes of sous bois, soft florals, and mineralty began to build. An absolute treat to try, big thanks to Chris for bringing this.

COuld not believe this was a Pinot and the age does not show one bit. One of those special wines at a special place--dark, brooding, and still full of fruit.

Offline dinner at Bern's. I don't quite know what to say about this wine. I'll pull a Jancis here and say "Pinot?" More like Zinfandel. Not bad Zin, but rich, hot, juicy Zin. The kind that makes you think you're drinking a 3 yr old Turley....but this was an almost 40 yr old Pinot!!!!!!!! We were told that Hanzell insists this is 100% Pinot Noir. If it is, then there was a little inbreeding going on in the vineyard when nobody was lookin. Don't get me wrong, it was good, in an interesting sort of way. Wouldn't try it again but would steer someone to it just for the fun.

Old Burgs . 29 Ponnelle & 67 Leroy Musigny, 59 Bouchard Chambertin, 72/91 La Tache, 74 Dujac BM, 64 Faiveley Echez + more.: I didn't like this wine. Maybe it was just too much of a change-up in this lineup. I took a brief sip and passed. Side note: the staff says that the folks at Hanzell assured them its 100% Pinot, but we scratched our heads at that, as we all felt otherwise.
