Dinner at Villa Saunières (Saunières France): Red and black cherry with moderate weight and concentration, but the wonderful balance I find in the finest 2000s, with nice freshness. Charming indeed.

Ruby red color. Slightly unclear edge. Not as much aging as expected after 14 years. Nose is spicy, hot and slightly alcoholic. A hint of an animal note but also with some fruit in it. On the palate though it seems completely shut down. Full of green twigs and unbalanced tannins and overly acidic. There is fruit and depth there but it is utterly crushed by the sheer weight of the greenness. Decanted momentarily later and left alone for 3-4 hours. Later the palate has improved a bit. The pinot fruit is more prominent and shows a hint of charm. But I cannot help feeling disappointed. This is a grand cru, but feels more like an angular and poorly made premier cru at best. I had much higher expectations for this wine.

Westchester Wine School Premium Burgundy Tasting (Mamaroneck, NY): Drank blind at WWS tasting vs Drouhin Clos de Mouches 2006. The Corton definitely showed its age in the glass. Nose also was very musty, almost thought the wine was maderized. It wasn't, and the nose faded over time. Fruit has faded somewhat, leaving behind lots of mushrooms, dust & bark. Tertiary notes dominate here, tannins fully resolved. I liked this wine, though I thought it had seen better days. I enjoyed its complexity and depth. Many tasters loved this wine, however, voting it the #3 WOTN.

(Bonneau du Martray Corton) Medium, medium-plus colour. Pleasing high-toned red cherry fruit shows on the nose. There's a solid core of fruit on the palate. A silky, wide, expansive impression in the the mouth with velvetty tannin. Long and with definite personality this is a 2000.

Opened up in the class after an hour. Some bramble fruit, rock, earth and gentle oak. Moderate weight and length. Enjoyable.

Only average, nothing special in it, acceptable but much too expensive for its class.
