Community Tasting Notes (9) Avg Score: 88.4 points

  • Blind, brick rim, evolved notes, sweet, barn yard, gammy and on a smooth and lengthy finish. Drink now.

  • APPEARANCE: Ruby red, turning brick red and almost orange towards the rim.
NOSE: Initially black olives, dark bitter cherries, hackberries, chokeberries. With some time in the decanter and glass it opens up more; the black olive and dark bitter berries topic is joined by Mediterranean herbs; rosemary, sage and laurel leaves. Hints of liquorice and wet earth. (91p)
TASTE: The arrival is dry, then unfolding an astringent fruitiness, evolving into a mid palate of almost bitter juiciness (or juicy bitterness?) in a much more appealing and drinkable way than I think my choice of words make it sound like. This continues seamlessly into the juicy, fruity, slightly bitter and oh so tasty and savoury finish and aftertaste. Quite rich and I would say full bodied. This wine is really four dimensional; sweet & sour, bitter & juicy. (92p)
The wine is mature but showing no sign of tiredness or running out of fruitiness or freshness. I think this will still drink very nicely over at least the next 3-5 years, potentially even longer.
This is at the same time so far from fruit laden, overly extracted punchy wines, yet it is exactly so full of fruit, with plenty of extract or dry matter and so punchy, albeit in a more sophisticated, yet also rustic way. It's simply just a lovely, multifaceted, complex wine. Total score 92 points.

(All this was written before I paired it with food. Together with a simple but rich lamb, onion, turnip and potato casserole with plenty of olive oil, rosemary and thyme it was really singing. The food brought out the sweetness of the fruit in this wine)

  • I'd say this wine is evolutionarily consistent with the previous notes. At this point, 15 years down the line, it has achieved peak bottle maturity (or just past), and with it, a deep garnet color with reddish orange brick toward the rim. The palate follows the nose as it captures a deep ripe sweet wood, almond and nut oil, melted prunes and raisins. Good clarity and tannic resolution with this 2001 Ciro. I say a proud effort. Others don't agree that it's in a good place. True on the palate though. This is a nice wine.

  • Hvordan har dette utviklet seg på 4 år. Forsmak: Fin kjellerlukt. Syrlig smak uten tanniner, litt brent og beis ettersmak. Har ikke hatt godt av lagring. 167 NOK.

  • Medium garnet. Really pretty aromas of blueberry, floral, leather, raspberry. Medium acidity, ligh-medium body with grapey mid-palate presence, some puckery tannins and a warming medium length finish. I was very impressed and enjoyed the wine. Not as rustic as the previous vintage I've had (99)
