As suspected, the wine was past it's prime. It was a 20 year old wine from a marginal vintage that didn't age well. The wine wasn't flawed just old and flabby.

While still at the end of its peak drinking period, happily this bottle was much richer, more complex and longer on the palate than the 3/20/21 bottle.

Medium red color. Aromas of black cherries, licorice, smoke and wood spices. Elegant, mature fruit in the mouth with very good depth and length. This bottle was clearly at the end of its peak drinking period and was not a good value.

I've had almost a case this year but forgotten to post a note. This is drinking wonderfully, no point in waiting. I'd rather drink this than an adolescent example from a better vintage. Double decant 1hr. Medium bodied although gains weight with air. Tannins integrated although slightly drying. Some floral and herb notes and a distinctive dried meat flavour. Very easy to drink and nicely bricking rim. Think smooth, rich and mature and less aroma, density or complexity. Suits me for a mid-week or pizza wine though.

Sesti Brunello Vertical 1995 – 2005, with Greg Sherwood MW (Handford Wines, London): Light floral on the nose, some roast meats. One the palate it feels simple, lacks depth and although Sesti reduced yields by 50% in 2003 doesn’t seem to have done the trick. A bit of a dry bitter finish. 88-89
