Color: deep, burnished gold (deeper than the '71 from a few months ago) with a lovely viscosity holding the long legs to the glass. Bouquet of ripe apricot compote with caramel, vanilla and a little hard oakiness. Palate still has a sweet attack but not a lot of complexity unfortunately. Apricots for sure, with a little tangerine rind, oak and a touch of bitters, this shows the vintage weakness of relatively little botrytis. While the acidity is on the low side this is still a pretty, drinkable wine (at 45 years of age!), but it will never gain the complexity needed to send it flying due to the vintage shortcomings. Certainly not a patch on the wonderful '71 or '67 vintages, it's still a pleasant wine; just don't expect too much.

UCD wine group (Boulder, CO): Golden caramel color. Nose of compoted fruit (peaches, apricots, tangerine), caramel, honey and custard. Fully weighted quite sweet fruit with some complexity, but minimal acidity or mineral character. Was a dessert in itself.
