Epic Blind Tasting with Great Buds (Virginia): The nose on this had a lot of sun-dried tomatoes, stewed cherries, roasted red pepper, mesquite, and some earthy, roasted chestnut tones. The palate had soft tannins and medium-high acidity with flavors of roasted plums and dried cherries, along with some tomato paste, black pepper, and chewing tobacco. Honestly, I really had no idea what this was so I went with a blind guess of a late 1980s Napa Cab, based on the friend who brought it's predilection for blinding us on weird old US wines.

Grand Cru Wines at The Kenwood (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Medium dark red color. Slow-O for 4 hours. Drank a glass over 90 minutes plus. Lots of Corton character here. The minerality stands out, iron, chalk, bright bing cherry, dried earth and spice resonate on the captivating nose. The palate is fairly full bodied with a great soft texture, satiny tannins, iron and blood, nice purity to the cherry fruit, earth and dried spices. Good length and depth.

In a flt with James & Carries '02 tonight. Both showed Corton terroir with minerally earth. This was the more robust of the two vintages and yet velvety, resolved and elegant. A tasty range of deep dark raspberry, spice, forest floor and minerality. This was less refined but its mouthcoating flavors were very compelling and impossible to ignore. A slight hint of VA but nothing to fret about. Great nose! 94pts+

Mid brick; earthy animal nose; slight stemminess; balanced, elegant style; refined fruit on the finish; not as big as from better vintages, but well-crafted wine.

Popped and poured, though a decant next time would be better. Dark ruby. Nose was a bit reluctant. Black fruits and dried leaves. Nicely balanced on the palate, which is better than the nose right now. A nice wine, might improve, but not a great QPR.
