Flight 1 (21 Notes)

  • 2010 Nyetimber Classic Cuvée 89 Points

United Kingdom, England, Sussex, West Sussex

Blind. Herb, lemon, toast, apple and light yeast. Nice poise, good acidity. Will age over the short-mid term. I thought this might be a Loire sparkling as I didn't find the depth of Champagne. Fantastic to try this producer as I've wanted to for years.

  • 2005 Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant 92 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières-Coulée de Serrant

Honey, melon, mint and herbs. Gets more expressive with air, there is really good texture and length. Some tang from the acidity that cuts through nicely. In a good place but will improve as well.

  • 2013 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gains 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Blind. Sesame, herb, melon and spice. Quite high in acidity, the structure is there for this to age well and it really feels like it needs it, even more than the other two wines in this flight.

  • 2013 Coche-Dury Meursault 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Blind. Loved this from minute 1. Sulfur, spice, floral, incense - swirls with aromatic layers and pop. Great intensity and the line of the wine is excellent. Texturally interesting and a wine that just makes me smile to drink. If it were a touch longer this would be off the charts, but as it is, simply magnificent.

  • 2013 Domaine Roulot Bourgogne Blanc 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Fairy floss, spice, melon and lime. Ripe on the palate, there is good energy here, with a line of minerality that helps give this some spark. Good length. Very very good at its level.

  • 2002 Voyager Estate Chardonnay 90 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Melon, corn, straw, almond and honey - definitely entering an aged zone. Clean and leaner on the palate, but the age is definitely starting to round out the edges here. Drink now and over the next couple of years.

  • 1999 Penfolds Chardonnay Yattarna Flawed

    Australia, South Australia

Too tired at this point sadly. 82 if rated.

    Faded well past its best.

  • 2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Blind. Violet, cherry, ash, musk and some redcurrant - has complexity and depth on both the nose and palate. Spices and red fruit all intertwined on the palate, this has great length and vibrancy. Totally approachable now, but obviously won't be hurt by further age. Superb and it finally got a chance to shine brightly!

  • 2007 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Blind. Blackcurrant, ash, iron and a bloody note. The palate feels a little flat at the moment, there is good balance and the structure is there, it just feels like it needs a good deal more time before it really shows its stuff.

  • 2007 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Blind. Stem, animale and cherry notes. Both the tannins and acid are quite high and define the palate at the moment. Really held back fruit and not particularly giving at this stage, I like it but give it more time.

  • NV Charles Melton Sparkling Shiraz 88 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Disgorged 08/2005. Haven't had one of these in a while! Blackcurrant, cherry, blackberry. Good spritz on the palate works well with the sweet fruit. Comes together nicely on the finish.

  • 1978 Masterson Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 87 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Mint, red berries, salami and chocolate. Quite lithe on the palate, there is a flash of bright fruit and then it softens out. Medium length. Great to try, but not a great wine.

  • 2009 Wendouree Shiraz 92 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Spice, roses, redcurrant, cherry and licorice - plenty of aromatic intensity. There is a similar intensity on the palate, which has opened up over the past couple of years. Still has good structure and depth, this is very, very good and will continue to improve from here.

  • 2003 Mount Pleasant Wines Shiraz Maurice O'Shea 91 Points

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Violets, ash, blueberry and some toasty oak. Youthful palate, with plenty of vibrant red fruits. Seems quite clean and lifted, the oak shows a bit but it isn't too distracting for me. Enjoyable.

  • 2005 Chris Ringland Shiraz 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Range

Smoke, coffee, pepper, briar and cherry. The alcohol (17.6%) is more noticeable here than it was the last time I tried it. Does lead towards a full throttled element on the palate, it coats the mouth and takes control from the start through to the good length finish. Will probably live forever.

  • 2004 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese 89 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Honey, ginger and orange peel. This bottle was starting to tire a little bit, with the acid there but not present as much as it needs to be. Still enjoyable.

  • 2013 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Blueberry, raspberry, cherry, touch of earth and chocolate with some blackcurrant. The palate is serious, with a whole lot of tannin structure and great length. Very good texture even with the fruit intensity. Seems to build and build across the palate. Very impressive.

  • 2014 Te Mata Estate Coleraine 91 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Ash, red cherry, slate, graphite, white pepper and kirsch. Good restraint on the palate, there is plenty of acidity to go with the mix of sweet and savoury fruit. Very youthful but plenty of potential.

  • 1933 Seppeltsfield Para Liqueur 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Caramel, charcoal, nutty and violet aromas. Sweet on the palate, with good fruit still present. Decent length and balance. This is a treat to try, but not mindblowing.

  • 2013 Jérôme Prévost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut Les Beguines 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Cherry, herb, straw, mineral, marshmallow and spice. Very youthful but there is interest here, has good acidity and the texture works well to keep the fruit sweetness restrained. Clean and young at the moment, I'll look forward to seeing how this is doing in a couple of years.
