Introduction

This was a smaller than usual gathering of our monthly group. There might have been a game or something that conflicted tonight. Drinking wine was a better plan.

  • 2006 Jacquart Champagne Brut Millésimé 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This is a very even handed Champagne that has nice fruit; green apple, apple skin, ginger, and yeast. 90+ to 91pts.

  • 2014 Vouette et Sorbée Champagne Blanc d'Argile Extra Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

    Pale straw color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Chalk, brisk minerality, enough fruit to counter the the lack of dosage, green citrus, good intensity, chalk finish. Craig's bottle and I think I liked it more than he did. A good wine, but it punches at a higher price point than maybe it drinks. 90+pts.

  • 2016 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 92 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

    Light salmon color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Boy this has got some seriously juicy citrus fruit, killer acidity, and some red berries to boot, all with a level of brightness and lift that you just don't get in many roses.

  • 2016 Château de Peyrassol Côtes de Provence 91 Points

    France, Provence, Côtes de Provence

    Very pale salmon color. Drank 1 glass next to the 2016 Tempier. I thought this held up quite nicely in comparison. Different in style though, much more subtle and elegant, understated in some ways, but has sneaky intensity and a poise that can't be denied. Strawberry, floral, light cream, peach, and spice. 91+pts.

  • 2007 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Very dark red/purple color. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus (don't recall what prep). I found this dark and juicy with deep rich fruit and a layers of flavor. The nose is full of dark berry fruit, blackberry, cassis, roasted meat, very savory and full of umami, spice, and slowly emerging garrigue over 20 minutes. The palate is full bodied, concentrated, layered dark fruits, cassis, blackberry, plum, anise, garrigue, with a silky texture and tannins. This came off balanced, if still a rip wine. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought this was by far the best this wine has drank. I'm not sure about aging this, but it certainly has come together for now.

  • 2007 Domaine de la Mordorée Lirac Cuvée de la Reine des Bois 90 Points

    Dark red color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This was rather big and dark, some alcohol showing on both the palate and nose. Medium plus body on the palate, cherry, dried cherry. I have a sense this would have been better a couple years ago.

  • 2006 Domaine Tempier Bandol La Migoua 92 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

    Very dark red color. Splash double decant; drank 1 glass over an hour. Very nice, kirsch, red fruits, and savory on the nose. Deep, medium plus body, with darker fruits on the palate, balanced, a bit rustic. 91+ to 92pts.

  • 1998 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Very dark red color. This got 2 hours of slow-ox; drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was in great shape, and had a marvelous nose of funk, saddle leather, dank earth, crushed flowers, spearmint, and a mix of red and black fruits, cherry, black cherry. The palate is full bodied, balanced and consistent with the nose, with integrating tannins and long finish. Really good.

  • 1999 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Another very nice wine. Bigger than the '98 Papet, but filled with classic character, black raspberry, cassis, spice, red currant, dry earth, garrigue, rather aromatic. The palate is full bodied, a nice mix of black raspberry, framboise, red currants; tart, garrigue, medium tannins and a spiced finish. 92+ to 93pts.

    Dark red color. Decanted for 3.5hrs and then open for 1.5hrs before serving. Very disappointing, alcoholic, sharp, wood, dark fruits, not appealing. I'm going to hope this was an aberration. Score withheld - sub 90 though.

    Decanted for 3.5hrs; drank 1 glass over an hour. Dark raspberry, blackberry, funk, charcoal, garrigue, deep and savory on the palate, very tasty.
