On opening, the nose is all flint, struck match and smoke, but over 30 minutes or so white stone fruits, brioche and hazelnuts emerge, and merge with the smoke. The palate is deliciously creamy in texture, and the last glass was the best. Needs time but really good. Thank you GF 18.75+.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Five years on from first trying this, it remains pale golden with green tinges. the ripe chardonnay, spicey new-cinnamon oak and citrus zest remains, with a nutty overlay that grew with time in the glass. If opening this great WB soon I would decant for several hours to see it at best. Thankyou David 19.
Deep scarlet red with some bricking. No lack of ripeness to Morot's wines and this is no exception, with ripe black berry fruits and licorice on the nose. Lucious palate, with enough earthy gamey-ness at the finish for balance. Thank you Ray 18.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Deep youthful red black in colour, you would think this wine was half it's age. Classic Corton nose of iron, soil, red fruits and some spice. More of the same on the palate, with hints of lavender to the long finish. A fabulous Corton, enjoyable now but with the structure for a very long future. Thank you Tom 19.
Opened 4-5 hours before service and slow-ox, this was unimpressive on opening but was transformed in the glass later. Medium scarlet red in colour and no more than medium body, Merlot fruit, violets, red fruits and coffee on the nose with a suave creamy palate and a long finish. This would have paired well with the Albert Morot, as the wine is quite Burgundian in structure. Consistent with the bottle from a few years ago and delicious but not for keeping 18.5.
Top shoulder fill and sound cork. Dark honey in colour, not the black tea of the '76, and with the expected wild amalgam of smells and flavours on the nose and palate. Still sugar and acid for structure and balance, but with wild flowers, toffee, salty honey, stewed figs and the like: a cornucopia of flavours. Will probably outlive its cork 18.75.
