Dinner with Edson (Maybeck): Very limited nose; palate is light bodied, red fruit, medium to medium-plus acid, light tannins, some red fruit but lacks depth and complexity; medium finish. Is this far too young? This doesn't just seem closed though; it seems too simple. 85-

Drank side by side with the 89 Clos St Denis.....it does not get much better than this, to have the luxury to be able to drink these wines side by side.

This wine showed tremendous freshness and vivacity, while exhibiting classic secondary and tiertiary notes.....a testament to an outstanding producer. A Classic Ponsot....highly recommended!

@ Noreetuh NYC. Haunting earthy nose that can only come from truly hallowed terroirs. Bright cherries on the palate, echoing finish. Soulful and a thinker’s wine.

My 40th Birthday Weekend; 2/17/2017-2/20/2017: One of the best burgs of the night - despite getting trashed by Burghound back in the day. This had ample red fruit and a soft and light spine. Moderately perfumed with a touch of baking spice.

Mostly shut, brooding nose, underlying spice and eucalyptus. The fruit is so big and luscious on the palate, dark red and black cherry, cranberry. Surprisingly approachable after a decant, with good spice and tannic strength underneath. Medium freshness and length. Really looking forward to revisiting down the road.

2013 Grand Cru Horizontal tasting (Prince Wine Store, Bank Street, Melbourne): Dirty glass? Concentrated cherry and berry is obscured by a certain stale dustiness. With time this begins to blow off revealing some stalks and some slightly jubey notes - feels like whole bunch. Tart to the point of being sour on the palate. Tough and ungenerous and quite bitter. Last wine in the bracket and a bit of a dog to be honest.

Tenth Anniversary Magnum Celebration (Dig Wines and Piccino Restaurant, San Francisco): Magnum. Ruby. Remarkably thin feel and lack of richness for such a heralded bottle. Hugely disappointing and difficult to understand coming from this large scaled vintage. Another example of a Ponsot that was show stopping when it debuted but much less compelling later on.

WWW, Rotterdam. Just a sensational bottle. Given the other ratings, this must have been one of those bottles. Extremely focussed and powerful, yet restrained and precise. Small sips were enough for an explosion on the palate, so the bottle lasted twice as long.

2005 Burgundy Nite (Dino): Spritzy, and it needed a Mollydooker shake. After that it was pure fruit, with a burst of sweet berry flavor as if it were a pinot noir reduction sauce except it didn't come across thick in weight or verge over the line into being candied.

Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes 2016 - Last vintage made by Laurent before the break with the Domaine.

Dark sensual and powerful expression with precise darker red berries, dark chocolate and light animal aromas. Some perfume too. Wonderfully concentrated and lovely depth. Fantastic fruit feeling with fresh red-purple berries. Great balance between being transparent and displaying power. Lovely acid. Nice salinity on the finish. Great wine. 96 points.

It's hard not to think of Laurent Ponsot as a hero given the role he played in bringing down the whole Rudy Kurniawan scandal, which had more complicit enablers than Trump's activity in Ukraine. It should never be forgotten as well that he makes great wine at all quality levels, including Bourgogne.

This is a beautiful, fragrant, elegant Bourgogne drinking at its peak. Pale ruby lightening at the rim. Nose still has plenty of ripe red berry fruit, with just a glimpse of woodland bosky secondary development, perhaps with a bit of stalkiness. Graceful and very light on the palate, almost skates across to a light and feminine finish. Just 12.5% ABV contributes to its lightness of being. Would be interesting to know where the grapes actually come from.

I've had this wine before and I never noticed there's a yellow dot off to the side of the front label that apparently will turn orange if the wine has been exposed to elevated temperature. Fortunately, my dot is still yellow even though I got it years ago from the most crooked wine purveyor in history, Premier Cru. I don't remember but I'm confident this was less than $20 a bottle, maybe closer to $15. If you could actually get your wine from them, Premier Cru was one hell of a bargain as only a full-blown Ponzi scheme can be. Also, assuming it works, why doesn't every authentic bottle have a temperature indicator on the label? I'd rather not know why this didn't catch on, going by the assumption that it scared the shit out of importers.

Interestingly, the wine comes with a very distinctive black and white plastic stopper. I left about two or three glasses in the bottle, stuck the plastic cork back in snugly and left it overnight in the fridge. It had substantially oxidized by the next day, all the freshness gone. Important to keep extra real corks on hand or make sure you finish it in one sitting! I noticed there's a thin plastic sleeve on the business end of the stopper that probably secures the seal, which I left sticking up out of the bottle. Lesson learned...

Siggy's btl ( Mag) with Vincent's fabulous 9 course dinner with 12 close wine buddies at the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis marking my retirement in days. This showed some VA but it sheer power and intense fruit kept this mostly enjoyable early on. This is massive with an intense mix of red & dark fruit, a strong bead of minerality, spice, vitamin, herbs and soil tones. Enjoyable with modified expectations. This is really going to be something if future btls are not impeded by VA.

94-96

Mind blowing wine. Had this at The French Laundry and this was probably the most aromatically complex wine I've ever had. Paired immaculately with duck. Our group was originally going to have two bottles of a really nice Barolo, and we subbed out one bottle for the Ponsot. While it made an odd side by side pairing, it also showed just how good this bottle was. I'm a huge Barolo fan, but it was entirely outclassed by the burgundy and it wasn't close.

I've never been good at listing wine aromas and honestly I don't care to because I don't find it all that useful beyond general categories. But this had a lot going on at once. Bits of forest floor with medium dark red fruit and some underlying cedar. Great acidity and structure.

This wine is one of the best 2 or 3 bottles of red wine I have ever had and single handedly has turned me into a Burgundy fan. I hesitate to call it life changing but I doubt I will ever be able to have a refined red wine and not mentally compare it to this ever again.

Full but very rustic nose. Barnyard and brett. Did not blew off. Sour, dark cherries, earth and gravel. Not very elegant.
Fullish and quite rich palate. Plum and raisin. Earth and forest. Very good concentration. But also totally damaged by stinking barnyard and brett. Also a bit volatile. Comes across as a rustic sort of natural wine.
Correctly identified as the Ponsot. Perhaps show the danger of working with old wood. This was no fun experience. My number 9. Groups number 9.

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind: Tasted double blind alongside Geantet-Pansiot 2009 Charmes-Chambertin. The two were very different, but it was slightly unclear which bottle was which at the end of the discussion, but I am reasonably confident this TN is for the Ponsot! Fresh and powerful black fruit comes across as completely pure while slightly burly. Patience required, very good now, but better in a decade.

Opened about an hour before serving, let it breathe out of the bottle for 20 minutes then replaced the cork per some of the previous suggestions about this wine losing its fruit after a few hours. Gorgeous floral bouquet and red fruits emanating out of the glass; strawberry jam, cherries, perfectly intertwined. Majestic Ponsot balance on the palate, everything intertwined just beautifully. Not a super long finish but delicious nonetheless. Another wonderful example of a very misunderstood vintage.

** Same Confrerie event as LAT note, see that for another opinion.**
{Bought on release, prof. cellared, opened at 6 pm and tasted, not decanted; poured from bottles around 8.30 pm; tasted with 2003}. Classic CdlRoche rich nose and attractive fruit set in sophisticated nose, black>red fruit, rich but not as ripe as in very best years or the 2003. More detailed minerals and soil inflection compared to 2003. Qualitatively rank these similarly (both 93 pts). Drink or hold, at least 10 years in this format. Delicious and a connoissieur's wine but not a "WOW" wine. (I was seduced by the ripe fruit of the 2003, sot that I am).
