2013 Franz Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Hochrain

8/15/2016 - Bob H Likes this wine: NR

One final day 2 note from a dinner with Outplaying and his significantly better half ;^)

Light yellow-gold in the glass, with a reticent nose that gives you a little white fruit cocktail.

Light on it's feet for a Hirtzberger Smaragd, with adequate acidity and decent length - this is still a youngster, but also pretty enjoyable right now.

We had this last night alongside the 2002, 2005 and 2012, and this is very similar in profile to that 2012 - I think this is fine to drink now, but also promises the potential for favorable future development as well.

Hard to beat as a seafood white for the money. Good fruit acid balance, longish finish, mineral component balanced out clams to perfection. On its' own interesting enough to keep going back for more.

Cellar tracker is showing two different bottles for this wine. The label on the other wine matched our bottle, but is Montagne st. Emilion and the other bottling listed something else. This bottle was from Eric’s dad’s cellar and showed really well. Lots of fruit left, with earthy mushroom accents. Soft. Enjoyed this a lot. A treat, knowing the provenance.

This was different from previous bottles...this one was hard, firm, edgy, very dry, with a mineral and graphite finish. No soft and plummy fruit this time. Still enjoyed very much, might be in a closed down phase.

Big, lifted bouquet of red cherries, floral incense, cinnamon, and loam, quite ripe for this house. This has a silky attack and mouthfeel already, tasting of ripe yet bright cherries with an earthy, woodsy note telltale for this chateau. A refreshing sour flavor kicks in on the finish, keeping this real. The weight of the wine is pretty pitch perfect for my tastes-- it avoids any heaviness, but shows zero dilution and has sneaky extract and intensity from good acids. There's a distinct touch of alcohol too, but its well integrated and comes across more medicinal like menthol than boozy. Overall, this is excellent in a heady, rich style for Lanessan, quite true to the vintage, yet eschewing the pitfalls modern winemaking. Drinking great already, I'm really digging this. 92-93 pts.

I really enjoyed this bottle. Great balance of fruit, acid and tannin with modest mineral notes. Lengthy finish.
Needs a 2 hour decant to open fully.
Accompanied dinner of grilled London Broil and grilled veggies (eggplant, squash, peppers, asparagus, Portabella, onion) with baked potato, awesome.
Last glass with Sunday breakfast of a veggie (grilled) omelet, bacon, and toasted bagel.
Maybe not the best drink at breakfast but the wine was just as good as the night before.

From a 375.
This is Excellent right now. No need for a lengthy decant. It opens up nicely in the glass.
Medium-full bodied, rich on the palate.
Dry, with smooth tannins and balanced acidity.
Dusty black cherry with a nice cassis bite on the back end.
I need to get some full bottles of this for the cellar.

I went to Total Wine to pick up some 16 Capbern. They were sold out, but I found these for $17 with a coupon. Popped and poured, I am going to try to follow this over a few days. I skipped the 11, 12 and 13 vintages and didn't like the one bottle of 15 I tried. This is a lighter vintage with the fruits mostly in the red spectrum. Accents of tobacco. With air, I get a little mint on the nose. There is a nice dose of acidity but I'm not finding it very tannic. At this stage, this is much more interesting to me than the 15. Really a pleasant wine. I don't see how this could age as well as the 09 and 10, at least so far tonight, but it is very nice for the level and price. If this gains a little weight and depth tomorrow, I will be very happy.

I can’t help but smile when drinking this. The first from a buried case. This is classic, real deal Bordeaux that I paid all of $18 per bottle for. Cassis, fallen leaves and tobacco. Austere, refreshing and perfect with food. Just good solid wine. Drinking well but should hold (I doubt it will improve). You don’t need to rob a mint to get good Bordeaux. (90)

Assessing Bordeaux 2015 from bottle, part I; 11/2/2017-11/3/2017 (Bordeaux): OK, this was amusing. In this blind tasting, GPL was featured ... twice! Coming after Pichon Comtesse, it was not as good as when tasted after Pedesclaux. We all agreed that blind tasting includes being influenced by wines tasted just before! In any case, I'll try to synthesize the two notes. Overall one gets an impression of depth and width, and with oak, but refined and long. A very good GPL! However, a bit shorter than the Comtesse. There you go.

11/10/2017 9:47:00 AM - Panos, thanks for the note and I agree with you. When tasting multiple wines, the previous wine often has a big impact on my impression of the next wine. Usually it is more subtle in horizontal tastings, but it can be huge when wines are different ages or new world versus old world.

Similar in color to the first wine, maybe even a shade lighter at the core. Nice nose, although without the definition of the Thivin CdB - a little "green" nuance as well.

Smoother/rounder on the palate, but without the "oomph" of the first wine. This is my 2nd 2011 Vissoux Bojo, and for what it's worth, neither has really floated my boat (although both were fine for casual drinking).

While I think that Gilman's review is a bit too favorable, this was a good Bourgogne blanc that shows good clear fruit with energy and verve, yet showing a bit too much oak currently in the vanilla and raw new wood on the palate. I think the wood will absorb and then this will be very good. I've been meaning to try this as a possible substitute for the Dauvissat cru Chablis that we've been opening. Found this wine, of all places, at a package store in Georgetown.

4/11/2014 5:48:00 AM - Pknut, have you tried the Perrieres bottling from Bize? To me that one is a little more Chablis-like in that it is leaner, perhaps more citrusy and shows more minerality. The minerality is a little earthier, flintier though than oyster shell. Its been a while since I've opened one of the Les Champlain though so I'll have to open one soon.

Once again, I find myself liking this far more than other tasters here. Initially, it's a very one-dimensional wine with nothing more than a simple tart lemon flavor. After half an hour, this bottle was positively singing: lush & creamy texture, lemon curd, lime, mineral, slate, and floral notes come through. Long, very mineral finish. I commented to my wife that this was my favorite 20 dollar bottle of white that I've tasted in recent years. For the price, hard to beat.

IMHO dusts the 2011. Consistent with the vintage this is bordering on take the enamel off your teeth. Very nice Chablis but with a funny funk on the nose on this bottle which blows off. A bit over-priced compared to the Fevre Domaine bottling. Pissed that I bought a case and the shop composed a case with half 2011 which I find watery and thin in comparison. 1/24: had a bottle of 2012 last night and the funk never blew off. This is on sale again and I am not buying more. I think the Fevre Domaine is a better buy at a similar price point. Lowering my score owing to the funk. 1/30: I finally had a good bottle. Lovely floral nose. I actually did a double take and sniffed several times as it was so uncharacteristic. Nice Chablis stoniness and grip. QPR not quite up there with the Fever and Defaix but finally a decent bottle of Pica. There is hope for the balance of this case.

I Pobega'd this new delivery ... it's terrific juice! This 1er combines 2012 richness and weight with real Chablis typicity. Pale gold colour. A nose of chalk, lemons, spearmint, river boulder, Granny Smith apple and flint. Energetic and vibrant on palate. Flavours of lemons, green apples, limestone and oyster shell. Vibrant, bright acids. As I say, good fruit weight and quite rich but the acidity ensures there is good balance and precision. Finishes long and parched desert dry. Like most '12s, I don't see this as a very long lived wine but, even this early, it's pretty much everything I look for in a young 1er Chablis. Very good!

Took to local venue Cov in Edina tonight to have along with crab cakes and salad with Nita. Somewhat linear at this stage but seems to have what's needed to be another great Dauvissat Forest. Tonight this was pale gold with sea breeze and mineral nose. Currently, the palate is mineral dominated, almost to point of licking a rock, which I'm not complaining about :). Along with the bowl of rocks there are notes of citrus, stone fruit and herbs. Ideally, this needs at least 3 more years. Wish this hadn't gotten so dam expensive! I used to buy 3 or 4 Forest for around $40 ea. Now its hard to find for less than $70. So I only buy a random btl to try rather than stock up. Those days ended with the 2011 forward. I may grab one more for prosperity.
