Drank this side by side with the 2008 Dom Perignon, which was an incredible privilege.

The Dom Perignon was grand, but the Cristal was perfect. Very likely the best champagne that I've ever had.

On the nose clear notes of smoke, yeast and wet stone, alongside apple and citrus fruit. Chardonnay is very recognisable here, giving off blanc de blancs vibes. Incredibly structured, powerful yet clean, supple and perfectly balanced on the palate. Extremely long finish. What a treat this was.

However, if you have not drank it, personally I'd reserve a perfect Champagne score for Dom Perignon Oenoteque 1971 (which is still being released, I think). As is all things, taste is a very personal thing, but I can speak from also having 3 cases of Crystal 2008, so my bets are hedged :)

Cold War Nuclear Escalation Wine Club Dinner (Otto e Mezzo, Alexandra House, Central, Hong Kong): As ever, thanks to Runny and it didn't take too much unabashed sychophancy on our part for him to bring this along......after all, it has become a tradition. Deep, deep rich red colour that is still semi-opaque. The nose grabs you immediately and plunges you down Alice's rabbit-hole....where opium smoke hits you both in smell and taste and also creates an in-the-head resonance that is incredibly rare to experience on the nose......fresh and vibrant, wafts of youthfuil bramble fruits.....all harmony and integration. The palate is just OFMG....rich, sumptuous, velvety, punchy, smoky like a temple and with deep, deep, deep (did I say deep?) fruit......great oak and soft tannin structure that is mirror-polished mahonogy....it has a Pomerol softness and roundness about it but with such power. Gosh......it resonates in the head like bells in Chartres cathedral. Powdery but firm tannins remain on the tongue long after it has been swallowed.....and then begin the reverberations and reveries. Wow! I think it was everyone's WOTN and it even moved Jean-Paul to poetry......which is pretty impressive (the wine...) when considered it was up against Ch. Latour 1959 and Margaux 1983, amongst others. If you love wine, drink one before you die.

Just so you know, Runny and I split a case we co-sourced about 10 years ago but we have opened more of his than mine so far.....that will ultimately re-balance. With no intent towards showing off, the perfect bucket list two wines for me in one meal would be Grange '71 preceded by Dom Perignon Oenotheque '71, which is another life-changing wine in my humble opinion. I could (almost) ditch everything else in my cellar for those two wines.

Tasted blind. Red currant, blueberries, cassis fruit – surprisingly red in character although clearly with darker nuances as well. Aging notes of wet earth, leather, a bit of barnyard and mushroom. Beyond that, savoury and herbal with spearmint and dried tobacco leaves. An incredibly wide variety of flavours. Even more so when taking into account the evolution in the glass which expanded the aroma profile with full-blown eucalyptus, pepper and a melee of spices and herbs. A soft palate yet with tension, very fresh and fruity. Despite a 5h decant this was getting better and better in the glass, also here spreading out spicy notes along the lines of salad herbs and soup spices with increasing intensity, developing more push and a crystallizing bright fruit core. I am lost for words how to best capture the soul of this monumental landmark. This combines the spicy sexiness and sweet and fresh fruit of an Aussie Shiraz with all the majestic posture of an aged first growth Bordeaux - and I'm a sucker for both! The only thing missing was tears in my eyes – probably a glandular malfunction on the day, should get that checked…

12/3/2020 7:00:00 PM - Hi Sirpat, my absolute favourite Grange for current drinking is the 1971 which is still a baby (rather like the 1959 Ch. Latour, which another all-time favourite wine of mine). On the Grange '71 I wrote on one note "Everyone should experience this wine before they die"....or something like that.

Other Grange vintages that are drinking really well now are 1980 ('81 is much too young), 1983, 1989 (atypically, needs drinking up),1991, 1993 (really fabulous and just entered its open drinking window) and maybe 1997 (with a 6-8 hour decant but will only get better in the next decade).

If you haven't tried it, Henschke Hill of Grace from the '80s is in the same league...or some would say, higher. i sit on the fence on that one.

Lastly - in a similar vein and you probably know it already, I am a huge fan of Ch. Musar and have almost every vintage going back to 1959. Anything from 1999 backwards is gorgeous if you give it a 6-hour decant (even the 1980s wines need it). It's also a lot more affordable than Grange or HoG.

1982 Château Léoville Las Cases

7/20/2022 - drdan322 Likes this wine: 99 points

This Léoville Las Cases is simply exceptional.

One can see why Parker gave it a rare “100” early on and now it is stunning, compelling and profound.

We bought two cases in 1985 (for ~$49 per bottle!), since well-cellared. Las Cases is often slow-to-mature but the 1982 has been truly obdurate – a tasting five years ago seemed almost youthfully unevolved.

Yet now? Perfection!

The cork broke transversely but the damp lower part was extracted cleanly. The wine decanted nicely with little sediment. The first pour was transparent cherry-ruby red yet with no tawny brickish edges. The initial nose was whiffs of pleasant barny loamy forest and black cherry.

Even the first taste raced a super silk textural opulence carrying abundant lead pencil, spice box and claro elements with no rough angles at all as tendrils of well toned tannins wove a wonderful vinous brocade.

Within half an hour the rich raciness remained as the bouquet orchestrated a medley of ripe black fruit, saddle leather layered under kirsch, hints of cedar and dried rose. Polished mineral earth acidity drove silky seamlessly concentrated flavors to a lingering finish dappled with flakes of old tobacco and grains of ash.

The robust unevolved tannins of years past are now fully resolved in a magnificent harmony – this is an archetype of what a truly superb vintage of well-aged Saint Julien and, especially, Léoville Las Cases can and should be.

Again, just a nigh-perfect wine finally entering a long peak era, likely to 2050 and beyond.

I love 'obdurate' as a descriptor....I sometimes use 'sullen' or 'a bear that has just awoken from hibernation' but I'll use 'obdurate' more often in the future.

    Thanks!

Opened at 1;30pm, drank at 9pm. The cork was nearly impeccable, the color hardly had faded, in fact it was nearly black, so deep it was. On the nose, a black hole of ripe fruits, and classic Bordeaux scents of pencil, leather, wet earth, spice all in a huge reverberating chord. On the palate simply awesome, a huge presence, but not heavy, yet as deep as one could wish. This could go for another 30 years and easily, in fact I believe this would improve in the next 15 years to become a legend~ . A fabulously wine.

Regular dinner group (@ My place): Special company, I have a few and I was so curious, so why not open a bottle…. Well, it was NOT a disappointment. So young, so lush, a lot of cassis, cedar, exclusive oak. So concentrated. Soft but powerful tannin. Beautiful balance between acidity and some pleasant sweetness. Hard to not score this 99 or 100 for the moment. But it is so beautiful and will show even more elegance and complexity after some years. I will not give any advice when to open it, because this might be a superb beauty from now until 2035 or even later. 98++ for now is the most correct score I think.

Full body with ripe fruit and a firm structure. Flavors of cassis, plum, and forest floor. Long delicious finish with firm tannins and perfect level of acidity. This wine was outstanding and one of the best I've ever had. Sorry that I have no more bottles of the '03's but hope that the more recent vintages turn out this good.

On immediate opening, the wine had a brick brown edge and a distinctively wood varnish nose. It also had a considerable ullage level. After 90 minutes in the decanter, the brick brown edge miraculously disappeared and the strong varnish settled down and became more reminiscent of freshly cut wood. The palate became an amalgam of beautiful spice laden fruit with a hint of candy and a velvety richness. The finish was long, persistent and satisfying. I bought this wine in a local liquor shop for $11.67 in 1976. The price sticker is still on the bottle. It was the last Grange I bought as I thought that the price was becoming too expensive for my one wage family situation. The 1962 was a great disappointment but both the 1965 and especially the 1966 were memorable wines and among the best I have consumed. Only the 1967 remains in the cellar, a legacy of my early forays into top Aussie wines. The 1971 accompanied my wife’s beautifully cooked rabbit with red wine and thyme.

On opening, the usual VA cloud hits your sniffer, but a short time in the decanter let that recede and the usual cornucopia of Musar aromas came wafting to the fore: dark coffee, cherry pie, walnut, beef blood, ash, leather, spice cabinet. Brought a smile to my face with every whiff. On the palate, perfectly resolved tannins and that unmistakable sweet cherry Musar fruit with tingly spices, acid, and VA varnish. Like old Beaucastel, the wines' flaws are always plain to see but somehow meld seamlessly into the wines' character, becoming virtues. What joy they give me!

Palate is oh wow.... purity and linear attack of ‘black slab’ fruit and stern but somehow tactile tannin. The resonance and reverberance is a deep, low toned hum that is almost ‘ohm’. Wow, this is so young but so beautiful. The purity of the fruit and its slightly confit aspect is stunning. Silence creating....which is my greatest compliment of a wine. Can only improve with age. In spite of the deteactors, I love the 2003 vintage for its left bank wines. For myself this is the best Pontet-Canet drinking, and it is now in its prime drinking window. It has the typical opulent nose of the year, and it is rich with wine gum aromas of cherry, blackcurrant and plum. On the palate you are reminded you are drinking a Paulliac, with a good tannic bite, but everything is seamless and silky smooth in the mouth. There is great depth and balance on the finish, but I do find it on the shorter side. I have no problem in consuming my remaining stock at a leisurely pace over the next decade.

HDH Auction (Restaurant Tru, Chicago, IL): John ordered this of the list at Tru. This hits you like a freight train when you stick your nose in - massive, golden brown, toast and spice, and chalk and minerals. Like a mile-high monolith (made of chalk, Adrian said). Broad and energetic. Brutally powerful and focused on the palate - chalky but also deep toned. Chalk minerals, toast - malt. Long and laser-like. This has a vibrancy and vigor that 99% of wines can't even begin to approach. I really have no idea how to rate this, but it was awesome, so I'll try. 18+/20, probably will be closer to 19/20 when it matures. God knows when that will be.

Boxing Day Lunch at Home with Friends (Our Place, Hong Kong): What a beautiful wine! For those who don't know the story, the Mondavi family led by Cesare Mondavi , the family scion and lead winemaker, bought this property in the 1950s but his son Robert left in 1965 to set up his eponymous winery (at the age of 53). So this is a late vintage made by his dad.

Distinct semi-opaque unalluring brown colour, remniscent of English 'Worcester Sauce'. Nose is surprisingly alive and vibrant - lots of savoury notes ( including Worcester Sauce), old brown shoes. Palate is unexpectedly fresh, good acidity, alive, lots of Chinese Medicine black herbs, Worscester Sauce, another more common English bottled Brown Sauce and all finished at the back end by semi-rotted plantation wood, still distinct tannin, lambs' blood...then slowly some lovely blackberry fruit emerges out of the loamy mists of an autumnal forest. Oh 'GOSH!'...this has suddenly totally changed into a gorgeous and seductive blackberry fruit and younger oak. Best after 3 hours from pouring...gets very heady and reverberant on the finish...a Lazarus-like experience. It ended up as one of my favourite experiences of 2020, although slightly beaten by the 1961 Giuseppe Contratto Barolo we drank alongside it. Merry Christmas!
