If you've ever doubted the old chestnut of a wine "putting on weight" with age this will disabuse you of any skepticism. The fruit here is as black and dense as road tar, still youthful, succulent, and sweet - except when this was *actually* in its youth it was nowhere nearly so rich and dense. But the accompanying flavors are the stuff that only comes out with bottle age, loads of smoldering tobacco and a scorched, singed character that's almost Pessac-like. This is still climbing up its slope, possibly with even more room for improvement, but at the very least a long ways to go before it tastes like something you'd call mature. Perhaps a successor to the underrated 1985? |

The fruit is matched by lots of delicious cedar and saddle leather, with a touch of tar behind. The structure is still good, providing lift and tension. Overall this wine is open and inviting, multi layered and very long - just a joy to drink. Drinking now this will last anotehr decade. |

Black fruits, graphite minerals and a gorgeous silky texture which leads to a refined, complex finish with notes of grilled nuts and smoked earth. One cannot under-estimate the greatness of Pauillac and this is a classic example in every way. |

After another hour, the fruit faded slightly into the background and it became more tannic. Another hour later it turned again. Certainly the best is yet to come, but even at this stage it is a really great wine. 95 pts. at the moment |

But within half an hour or so it had already mellowed and the wine was wonderfully balanced with nice fruits. Before opening the fill seemed a bit low, but it turned out that it was nothing to worry about because the wine was wonderful |

Sandalwood and tobacco on the nose, the palate is red fruit, more smoky tobacco and oak, roasted coffee, spicy tannins, and a long clean finish. Deliciously complex and paired tonight with pan seared filet and baked potato with plenty of butter. Then chocolate cake for dessert (the bdx was an awesome pairing!). Very mild resolved tannins at this point, I'd say it is ready to enjoy. |
