Dark purple fruit - blackberry, dark currants, and a little dark cherry. Smooth mid-palate, however, I expected a little bigger/fuller fruit in light of the 95 rating from WA and 97 from Jeb Dunnuck - medium body. Nice rich flavors of dark berries and some spice/tobacco. Fairly long finish. Decanted for one hour and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time. Not bad at this stage but I believe this vintage probably needs another year or two for the fruit to open-up more and hopefully fill-out some. According to James Suckling, try in 2020 which I believe makes sense. In my opinion, closer to the 93 rating from Suckling at least at this stage. 100% cab.

Decanted 90 min prior to first glass; paired with grilled NY steaks with broccoli and baked potato. Still hugely tannic, even with the decant. Great black and blue fruit, along with earth and leather. Finish is all vanilla and coffee. Tannins made this not fun to drink on it's own, but when paired with the food, it was lovely. Drink 2020-2030+.

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 11% PV, 3% Malbec. W/ Augustin Huneuus. Nice ripe black fruit aromas, but has an edgy note to the nose. Very suave palate, a little marshmallow/vanilla on the finish.

At first not a lot to the wine. No finish and not much of a nose. about 2-3 hours into drinking it, it finally opened up and was much better. Typical syrah with dark fruits and goes best with a big rich "beefy" meal. It had a good finish with the food. It was much better with the food than on its own.

One-hour decant. This seems to be in the middle of its drinking window. Black and red fruit. Well-balanced. Should continue to drink well for the next several years. Drink or hold.

Had a couple of glasses at a work dinner on Thursday. We ended the meal with a half bottle left, so the host stuck a cork in it and offered it to take home. I obliged but wasn’t able to revisit until Sunday.

Distracted by the business conversation, no notes to speak of on the initial glasses beyond being pleased with the quality of the wine ordered and wishing the club was a bit more liberal in their use of decanters. That said, it was readily drinkable.

The Sunday half bottle...looks and smells better than it tastes. Flavor-wise it is enjoyable but it is a bit thin upfront and in the middle. Somehow the finish is on the long side. I haven’t tasted the 2015 Long Shadows lineup (yet) but I expect I wouldn’t linger very long here in anticipation of the other offerings. Certainly an inferior vintage to the 2007 I had recently.

Dark ruby toward purple, no sign of age. Initially greeted with clay, cocoa shavings, glue, Andes mints, and blueberry on the nose. Dense palate, with a somewhat gratuitous build, but some cool, redeeming acidity, as well. Chewy, and round, made for instant gratification; styled, not grown. Toasty oak, espresso dreg. Some earth, balsamic and black cherry by the second hour. BE SURE to serve this on the cool side (i.e. cellar temp or just above) as the EtOH can rear its head pretty quickly. 14,7% abv., drink now or in the next 4 years.

Aerated to decanter (mild amount of fine sediment) for 3 hours, served non-blind. Ridiculously heavy bottle.

update: after a long decant, this was returned to bottle, served 2 hours later and enjoyed over 2 hours. While the wine never really got interesting, it was enjoyable - the credit goes to the acidity. Tannins are fully resolved, this is in its window.

Winemaker, John Duval, formerly with Penfold's Grange. 14.7% abv. Darkly colored. Dark fruits dominate the nose. Drinks smoothly with fine-grained "sandy" texture, probably from the tannins, and dark berry flavor. It also shows a bit of subtly leafy or herbal notes. Ripe fruit but not overblown and not presenting as "hot" despite the rather high alcoholic content. There is delicious, lip-smacking fruit in the midpalate and the finish is a bit drying but not off-putting. There is also some fine sediment in the glass. This is perhaps more Australian than French in style, but personally I like that the tannins are muted, not forbidding, and I am willing to forego some of the pepper and bacon or smoked meat (although I like those qualities in Syrah) in exchange for the attractive black fruits. This was my first wine from the Long Shadows Wineries project. I tried to order some of the Poet's Leap Riesling at the same time as I ordered this, but it was sold out.

Had this while eating the main course during the BCS championship game. I see the reasons for the higher scores, but I am not there at his point in the wine. Frankly, I think I might upscore it 3-5 years from now when I consume the others I have.

That being said, it is a lovely Merlot, albeit very big at this point. It definitely needs food right now, or it is just an oaky but tasty bottle. Overall, I say that it has a nice play across the palate - so starts and finishes strong and is just as good in the idle It has a ripe taste and the high alcohol needs food. ribeye offset it beautifully. Well done - and I want to see what this wine can really be in a few years.

This is one of my favorite WA wines. It evolves in the glass with such elegance. I think it’s really good right now so a little time in the cellar should really make this wine show.

Decanted over an hour. Fresh berries laced with a bit of minerals and camphor. A slightly spicy note adds a unique twist to the wine. Full bodied with a long finish. Overall tends towards a smooth wine but an abundance of tannins adds a bit of an edge to it, though over the course of a meal the edge goes away. Will be an even better wine in a couple years.

This wine is 81% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. Aged 22 months in French oak (85% new). 14.7% alcohol.
PnP and started enjoying this wine. Will taste it over the next few days to watch progression...
Nice, med ruby red at the core, fading to a pale purple rim.
Nose shows med+ intensity blueberry and plum fruits, coupled to slate, wet soil, dark chocolate, and bell peppers.
The wine shows a full body with med alcohol, and the med+ intensity tannins are definitely becoming more noticeable with air, showing a nice dryness with an underlying voluptuous, velvety mouthfeel. This wine shows pedigree. The fruits on the palate include blackberry and plum, with some gravel and smoke leading into the med+ length finish.
Drinking quite well, just now, and will continue to improve and integrate through 2017, drink well through 2021 or so.
One day later- the tannins appear lighter today, though still with a medium, astringent finish. Surprisingly, I think this wine will not age as well as I thought it would from yesterday's "fresh bottle". I would push up the latest drinking window to 2018 or so, just in case. Still, pretty delicious right now...

Considering buying more to lay down in light of Dunnuck’s favorable rating but wanted to see where it’s at first. Surprisingly quite approachable for a 2018 cab. Dark ruby fruit - currants, blackberry, dark cherry, and some plum. Smooth mid-palate with a nice purity but a lighter profile than expected - medium body. Nice flavors of dark berries, spice/licorice, cassis, some tobacco, and a mineral/graphite component. A cross between new world and old world. Fairly long finish. Decanted for three hours and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time but drinking well after the decant despite its youth. As usual, a solid cab for the money at around $60 in the secondary market but Dunnuck has consistently over-rated this cab including the days that he rated the Washington wines for WA. In my opinion, it’s closer to Suckling’s 92 rating - at least at this youthful stage. 100% cab.

At home with some leftovers, cold weather, nice spice with the meal. Haven't had this wine for a few years. Splash decanted for about 30 minutes, was open for business right away, added depth over two hours.

Bought this wine for the Grange connection - like most - no notes on my first tasting two years ago, don't remember it being memorable. Wine has put on weight and gained considerable complexity since last tasting.

Dark maroon to the rim, high ABV but no real heat on nose or palate. Dark fruit on the nose. Dark fruit, plums - Aussie style front palate - followed by oak, herbs, bacon, meat. Medium body, long finish.

Softer mouthfeel and tannins, slightly sweeter and softer style of Syrah than most from Washington I have experienced. Enjoyable and much improved from last bottle.

Between all of the Long Shadows wines tasted recently, this is the one that tries the least to be what it actually is. This is Syrah. This is not a 100 point Syrah, but this is a dang good Syrah that will guarantee to drink like a classic Syrah and made by a guy who knows what Syrah is all about. Black, thick, dark, black pepper rich. On day 2 I think that this one was softer, but according to attestation there was less smoked meat on Day 2, and this must have been the case because I wasn't really picking it up (and I'm pretty sensitive to this note). Very enjoyable wine that should age 10 years.

Black and dark red fruit - blackberry, dark currants, and dark cherry. Smooth mid-palate with solid depth for the price point and nice purity, however, I expected a little bigger/fuller fruit in light of Jeb Dunnuck's 95 rating from WA. Flavors of dark berries, some spice/tobacco, and a little earthy/old world flair that's really not my ideal flavor profile. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep. Decanted for one hour and drank over another two. Improved a little with time but drinking pretty well after the decant. A solid QPR at $55 and I would imagine that most will enjoy the vintage more than I did but once again the flavor profile isn't my thing. According to WA, anticipated maturity 2020 to 2040. 100% cab.

9/5/2022 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: NR

The 2018 Feather is perfectly named, as it delivers depths of intense fruits, spice, leather and mocha notes, while remaining incredibly energetic and at times--"as light as a feather". That's not to say that there's not enough stuffing here for a long evolution, in fact it's just the opposite. The 2018 possesses a crystalline tannic structure that you could almost miss due to its wonderfully balanced acid profile and masses of tart wild berry fruits. This energizes the senses, all at once drenching them in vivid raspberry and blackberry, yet also keeping the mouth watering for more. Frankly, the best days are yet to come, but after an hour in decanter, I can't imagine keeping my hands off long enough.
