2019 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche

La Tâche Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

11/2/2022 - NostraBacchus Likes this wine: 100 points

Tasted in a arrivage tasting of all DRC 2019. Overall, the 2019s DRC are beautifully perfumed, very ripe wines, but they also carry a nice vein of acidity that is making them brighter and fresh. The bottles show incredible class, but also a certain ripeness that might be something that needs getting used to for purists. I thought that the terroir was showing beautifully, despite the ripeness of the year. The wines seemeed very different and true to their cru, especially at the beginning of the tasting and again with quite some air. In between the differences were just a tiny bit muddled.
Superbly deep, layered, complex and just overall an incredibly unique wine. Very perfumed, ripe dark red fruit, also some dark minerality, plum, balsamic notes, rose petals, licorice, some spices, flowers and herbal notes too. It‘s full-bodied, dense and authoritative, with depth, pretty high tannin and acidity, that will require some time to integrate, but there is more than enough complex fruit to absorb the structure. A great wine that will only need time, too back I probably won‘t ever taste it again. It was so fascinating to taste this next to the Romanée-Conti, this was more structured, bigger and richer, while RC was more elegant, full of finesse and class. They are both equally compelling and pretty much as good as wine gets for me.

Part of a 2016 DRC tasting, a vintage that impressed with how approachable it already was, purity, elegance and versatility. For me, the La Tâche scored best, followed by Richebourg and Romanée-Conti – although the latter may well surpass the La Tâche in the long run. Corton came in last. Montrachet, Échezeaux and Grands-Échezeaux were not produced commercially that year and older vintages offered instead.

There is lots of depth and finesse. Intense red cherry, maybe unsweetened cherry jam, just a tad bit of smoke, bacon and a fruit that finds further support from mineral notes such as graphite or flint stone. A drop of rose water perfume. A beautifully juicy palate brimming with ripe red cherry, fresh acidity and tightly knit texture with soft tannins. Medium+ length finish. Microscopic precision. Over time sweet spices and herb are being expressed on top. Whether this will be the long-term winner in a race against Romanée-Conti over the next decades is a different question, but for me the wine of the night, no doubt about that.

Bottle no. 13,660 out of 16,644 bottles produced. PNP into Riedel Superleggero Burgundy Grand Cru glass (“Flower” day): Pale bright garnet with ruby tints, brilliant colors.

First pour impressions: Across full spectrum from darker red, blue and purple berry, cherry, plum and date fruits. The most alluring and deep nose of liquorice, dried herbs and flora, sweet Vosne spices one can imagine here. What sets this apart is how each sniff changes in terms of the profile. Just amazed at how this can be achieved…

More about prestine and deep fruit flavors consistent with nose on palate then the decidedly complex spicy finish. Truly perfect example of an “iron fist in a velvet glove” here. Unending finish.

Hard to put it under 96-97 points from the first sniff.

Second pour, 30 minutes upon opening, 7/8 left: Even more exuberant fruits and more ethereal floral and herbaceous spices this round, which somehow reminds me of the absolute top examples from Bordeaux! Extremely well integrated tannins and minerality that makes this feather-weight on palate which is amazing given the incredible level of dry extract of this wine.

Third pour, 45 minutes upon opening, 5/6 left: Magical fruity notes of deep purplish cherries then berries, with the signature “hoisin” sauce like savory and mineral driven notes sets off this round. This is quickly followed by the liquorice and dried flora notes that is so complex that is reminiscent of the top of Cabernet Franc, all achieved without any reductive notes and a ultra long clean and spicy finish. This is clearly solid 97 points now for me.

Fourth pour, 1 hour upon opening, more than 2/3 left: The fruit notes, unbelievably, just keeps getting better here. What a “wow” wine but I start to worry about my vocabulary on how to describe this… Could this (still) be the “wine to end all wines”?

Fifth pour, 1 hour 15 minutes upon opening, more than 1/2 left: More about savory and noble woody spices this round, lots of dry extract and arguably more tannic suggesting the young age of this wine. Then, the organic mellow dark cherry fruits sets in and quickly fill the mid palate with tons of energy. Really complete wine here.

Sixth pour, 1 hour 30 minutes upon opening, 1/2 left: Ok this is really the “zen” moment to enjoy this wine for me - potpourri floral notes, black and blue berry fruits, ethereal Vosne spices. Savory, pencil shaving like spices on the next sniff that suggests the depth of the underlying material and pedigree here. O.M.G. this is a wine that can satisfy anything one would ever want in a rouge. 97-98 points.

Seventh pour, 1 hour 45 minutes upon opening, 1/3 left: This round is more about complex savory notes to me with “elegant” graphite / pencil shaving notes (if there is such a thing?) at first sniff. Upon some time in glass the fruits are back again with deep, slightly inky purple fruits like plums and garrique like savage notes that is not dislike the top of Syrah from the Northern Rhone… I am literally running out of descriptors to do this wine justice! 98 points.

Eighth pour, 2 hours upon opening, 1/4 left: Wow somehow this is still giving new facades every pour - menthol, minty spices set off this phase with lots of “sweet” and ripe fruits, cinnamon spices and chestnut puree notes as support from the second sniff. Still, the best defining feature here is the extreme fine minerality that inspires the level of energy the grapes have here. Retain at 98 points.

Ninth pour, 2 hours 15 minutes upon opening, 1/5 left: Hitting another climax in my view with the explosive potpourri and complex floral notes that can only be described as “fireworks” on the nose. The wine is simply regal and extremely complex and well integrated on palate at this stage and indefinitely drinkable.

Tenth pour, 2 hours 30 minutes upon opening, 1/6 left: Getting more mellow, ripe dark red date fruits. Noticeably more smoothly tannic palate here with lots of dry extracts here.

Final pour, almost 3 hours upon opening: Inch perfect wine with exuberant fruit, superbly integrated with complex floral and spices, with noticeably darker tone hues to the eyes, and the incredible integration for such a complex wine in such a compact package. The fruits are again getting even better (somehow!) with the most alluring and explosive dark red berry fruits. Then, this is followed by a wave of savory, hoisin, complex spices and hints of cocoa, coffee and liquorice. This is by far the most profound and complete wine for me ever tasted so I would say this is now 98-99 points. Merci! What a perfect wine in every way this is!

Normally don’t post restaurant wines on here. But gotta post the DRC note. Drank at Fresh Run Farm for the “Quince at The Farm” lunch series in northern Cali. Soaring aromatics, tremendous complexity and crazy expressive. Red raspberries, exotic spices, roses, fine acidity and an energetic and ample mid-palate with a seamless balance and a finish for days. Absurdly delicious even at this stage.

Opened at 10am and started serving at 9pm. The nose is absolutely regal with intense Vose spice, stems, darkish red fruit and wood spice. Palate has all the La Tache stuffing and depth you would expect even at this young age. This is already so good now which is truly impressive. Love the 2014 DRC.

2017 DRC La Tache was one of the greatest young red Burgundy I have ever tasted.

It was an epiphany, causing me to completely reconsider what I thought I knew about the aging curve of red Burgundy. I had thought it was absolutely necessary to have at the very least 15 years of age to get something profound, and usually quite a bit longer. This wine proved that it's possible to get the magic without the age. Surely still a rare phenomenon, but it's possible.

For context on just how profound this wine was, we also drank 2008, 2009, and 2010 La Tache as well as various other DRC wines going back to 1993. But to my amazement, it was the 2017 that most greatly impressed me. The 2017 was the wine I woke up thinking about the next day. And I am usually the person in our tasting group that gravitates toward the oldest wines, the ones that some will say are "over the hill."

This 2017 has gorgeous exotic spice and fragrant dried rose petal aroma, very classic La Tache. There's magnificent fruit, but critically none of of the baby fat or oak that I often find myself having to try to overlook in young Burgundy. The balance is pitch perfect.

I should also note that not everyone at the table was in agreement with me. I don't usually assign points, but those that did gave it 94 -- certainly respectable, but not the best scores given that day.

I am now very curious to try other 2017 red wines in their current state, to see if any are as precocious. I doubt I'll find any that can match the great heights of this La Tache, but it will be fun to try 😊🍷

DRC 2016 – what survived the frost: Intro: Another great vintage. At this early stage I slightly prefer the 2016s over the 2015s at the same point last year as the former show a bit more open and complex (due to a less dominant fruit core). Out of the 5 reds, the Richebourg is my #1 with its early charms and seductiveness. The La Tache is the most complex and shows a tad more open than the Romanee Conti, which is so dense and packed that it very likely will reach higher highs than all other wines. The RSV also boasts the fantastic structure and finesse without the incredible depth of the big 3.

TN: Incredibly complex and ever changing aroma profile on the nose and palate with dark fruits, dark forest berries with time more and more pure red fruits with strawberries, cranberries, cherries, strawberry candy, rose hip, fresh herbs, loads and loads of minerality with wet stone, granite, earthy tones. The complexity and the purity of the aromas are off the charts. The structural frame comes with the softest tannins and a very round and high acidity which will need some more time to further integrate. Great length. Incredible 97/98 nose thanks to the unbelievable complexity, 95/96+ on the palate thanks to the complexity and structure with some deductions for the acidity. This could become a masterpiece and a (nearly?) perfect wine in 20 years.

The 90 La Tache dinner also 05 Coche CC, 88 Krug and 01 Rousseau CSJ (Decanter restaurant, St. Regis): The 05 Coche Corton Charlemagne was a slight letdown and I am a bit nervous. Pop and pour, the cork is perfectly moist and elastic. Quick sniff at the bottle, the wine seems correct. A small pour to a Zalto burgundy, I am speechless and becoming very emotional. The nose is simply perfect, beguiling interplay of unbelievably complex tertiary notes and incredibly explosive perfectly ripe hedonistic pinot fruit. Everything that you look for in a perfect Burgundy is present in abundance, decadent black fruits, Vosne spices, sous bois, truffle, cornucopia of flowers, roasted coffee beans, licorice, liquid smoke, stem, perfume and incense to name a few. The palate is also perfect, intense, subtle, precise, fresh and energetic all at the same time. It is certainly ripe reflecting the 90 vintage but still remains perfectly fresh, precise and balanced. The finish is never ending. This is perfect now and will remain perfect at least for the rest of my life, transforming like the monumental 62. Truly an emotional and spiritually uplifting experience. From the same batch as the last bottle drank last year.

Complete DRC Vintage Horizontals 2017 vs 2018: Since Covid didn’t allow for a proper arrivage tasting last year, we tasted the 2017s in direct taste-offs vs their 2018 counterparts this year. All bottles were opened a few hours earlier, not decanted but we got enough time to follow each wine over 45+ minutes in the glass which allowed for proper aeration and analysis. A few observations: 1) The 2017s are disarmingly easy to drink, charming, soft and open. 2) The 2018 show more depth but will need more time to flesh out, open up and become rounder. 3) Best ever Cortons. Slowly but surely they grow into their allocation (not market) price. 4) The showstopping RSVs edge out the Richebourgs with the purest fruit expression vs raw and today a bit unintegrated power. 5) The La Taches and RCs are playing in their own category in terms of complexity but the RCs are a bit closed. 6) The Montrachets are fabulous with a sharp, complex and complete 2017 as a consensus WOTN and a 2018 which is a bit broader but still amazing.

TN: This needed a bit of swirling and time to open up. On the nose intense red berries and the typical spice notes, gingerbread and some meaty/bacon notes. Superbly delineated, inviting and ever changing. Same on the palate with a superb complexity and new aromas popping up with every sip. A broad range of fruits in all colors and shapes, spices, gingerbread, smoke, herbs, stems and animalistic notes. So perfectly defined and powerful but well controlled by the elegance and a superb structure. The 2018 in the next glass had even more complexity and it will likely has a longer life and reach a higher peak but this 2017 is fabulous.

Love the exciting color; the marriage of underbrush and sweet fruits is equally as exciting, though it's far from reaching the apogee of its complexity. And even though this was Audozed overnight, this was still holding back - I suggest at least 7-8 years of rest; if your cellar is cold, let it rest for 15. Served blind, I guessed the producer, but not the vintage. What an unexpected treat, and a great way to wind up a 3 month long tour of Italy's wine regions.

Unbelievable concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated black fruit, unctuous, rich and opulent yet silky and sensual, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, mostly masked very fine tannins and the finish that never ends. It confirms once again that this is the biggest and most concentrated La Tache at least since the 90, only equal by the 15. It remains very youthful and doesn’t show much sous bois yet it is incredibly complex. If you prefer a lot of sous bois and tertiary notes as I do, this can easily improve for three decades or more. Pure red fruit, lifted all spice, vanilla pastry cream, mint, herbal tea, rose petal, chamomile, zesty, chocolate, meaty, citrus caramel, violet, lightly peppery, roasted game smoke and spice. On the palate it is whole, so full in itself, at full display of the masculinity of terroir, while keeping itself not only ethereal but also tangible. So much energy but just so seamless, a stronger RC so to say, flawless at the moment. While “accessible” like the rest of the vintage, decades of patience will reward more than greatly. 98-100

Bottle #01330

Appearance: Dark red with rosy pink edges

Nose: Showing it's stuff right away on the nose. When we came back to it after initial opening (~1.5 hours later) there was a lot of red fruit, typical asian spice and hoisin. As we continued to enjoy, the nose developed some hints of tobacco as well.

Palate: To begin with the palate was super tight (as to be expected), but when we started enjoying the bottle an hour and a half after opening, the palate was showing a lot more with hints of tobacco and licorice.

Overall: With every glass this wine evolved and got better, but even the first glass was utterly balanced. So while the wine improved over time and showed more complexity and give, it demonstrated amazing balance from the get-go and that remained throughout. The last few glasses were so silky rich and elegant. The few times I've had La Tache, it's been a kaleidoscope of flavors and this experience was no different. Although this was one of the most impressive young bottles I can remember drinking, I would recommend saving any bottles you own for a future date. But if you see it for a good price on a wine list, don't be afraid to try it (or tell me the restaurant name).
