Decanted but should have been longer. So sleepy. Good cab color, nice on the palate, a bit light as weight did develop later in the glass. Short sweet finish. Drink.

Opened in bottle for about 4 hours before serving, no decant. Lovely nose of red fruits and flowers. Beautifully integrated, "softer" wine with good depth of flavors, and a silky mouthfeel. Very nice.

Cloudy muddy faded purple; Earthy dusty soil, purple and red fruits, med. silky, full bodied but balanced; thought this might be a Cali Syrah. Held up really well for a 1990! Tasted much younger. Tied for last place, not sure why. TOC DD Yarom group at H&H Brazilian Steak Beverly Hills.

One hour decant. Deep dark intense magenta color. Mushroom, baked apricot, blueberry cobbler, and subtle caramel-infused earth. Smooth, dry, rich palate. Soft, plush, tongue coating acidity. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish.

First time trying this particular bottle (maker and vineyard). I was very impressed. Enjoyed this at Brennan’s in New Orleans. Very fun.

Awesome wine. Open for 45 min before and drank for 3 hours. Best glass was the last glass and if you only have one or two I would recommend waiting a few more years. However, this was super balanced with no hard edges and a nice balance of subtle dark fruit and secondary / tertiary notes. I will be looking for more to hold for a bit.

My last bottle of this, sadly. Double decanted at 3pm and taken to a friend's home for dinner. This was wonderfully expressive from the start and particularly red and light black fruited...black and red cherry, black raspberry, cassis, as well as lots of secondary and tertiary flavors and aromas like, graphite, spice, tobacco, cedar, violets. Very long and luxurious. Great texture and balance. Wonderfully paired with grilled venison medallions and fire grilled beef ribeye and NY Strip steaks. Excellent and probably the best bottle yet, so not at risk of failing due to age.. if cleared properly.

23x California 1974: Do the legendary 1974s still hold up? The answer is a resounding YES, and not just for one or two top wines, but across the board. These best wines showed incredible complexity, with still vibrant fruit cores perfectly complemented by layers upon layers of tertiary aromas, a fully intact structural frame, stature, poise, and freshness. While many of these wines should continue to age well, I don't expect them to get any better than they are now. The top wines in the tasting were the Mondavi Cabernet and the Phelps Insignia (both 97pts), the Mondavi Reserve and the Mount Eden (both 96pts), and the Ridge Monte Bello (95pts). Many more wines scored in the 90-94 point range. I'm convinced that many wines would have scored even higher in a different tasting setting, where you can follow the wine over the course of an evening. Only 5 of the 24 bottles showed signs of weakness, with 1 of those already oxidized, but given the substance that could be tasted underneath, this is more likely due to weak corks or poor storage than anything nature delivered this year. All the wines had very good fill levels and had been quickly double decanted before tasting to remove the sediment.

TN: The wine's nose was initially muted and not fully opened, suggesting the need for a lengthy decant. On the palate, it was more expressive, showcasing a classic Pauillac profile with notes of graphite, cool dark fruits, tobacco, and earthy undertones. It displayed remarkable elegance and balance, with a soft and integrated structure. Both Diamond Creek wines, and particularly this Red Rock Terrace, are still qiote young and would benefit from an additional 10 to 20+ years of aging. Decanting is advisable if consumed presently.

TN: This wine presents a medium expressive bouquet with dark fruit and dense minerality that makes it quite seductive, though not as complex as some of the others in the tasting. The palate is vibrant, with nuances of truffle and tobacco alongside fresh cassis and more dark fruit, underpinned by minerality and herbal notes. It's complex and precise, with well-integrated tannins and a fresh, satiny texture. Of all the wines today, this was the most classically Bordeaux-like in style. And both Diamond Creek wines were the only two wines in the tasting that are not fully mature and would benefit from additional 10 to 20+ years of cellaring. Decanting is recommended if opened now.

1978 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill

To Tony (La Grange Park, IL): From magnum. Mind-boggling how obnoxiously young this is. Served blind, I'd probably guess something like 1991 (though it's not as fruit-forward and ripe) or 1992 (probably a better guess). There's a bit of chocolate and cacao going on with this wine, but coupled with the way the fruit shows (secondary at best) and how youthful those big tannins are here, it all works in perfect balance. That this feels kind of chewy on the palate says all you need to know about the further ageability of this. I only hope I can cross paths with a bottle of this again in the future.

To Tony (La Grange Park, IL): Next to a magnum of the 1978, it's very apparent how ready and approachable this wine is. And yet in isolation, it kind of isn't. The fruit profile here is quite dark, and there's that classic old Diamond Creek perfume on the nose that is really amped up. On the palate, and developing with some air, you get more of a funky, sweaty animale note (not unlike good old Rioja) that somehow is so pheromone-ridden that you're clamoring for more. Despite how good this was, I very much preferred the obnoxiously youthful 1978 magnum more.

Very nice. Dark cerise color in the glass. Slightly earthy aroma. Blackberry, cassis, plum, leather and a hint of cedar on the palate. More fruit forward than previous vintages I have tasted but was a wonderful follow on to an '18 Pape Clement at an extensive wine dinner with friends.

"Tits and Boobies" (Chicago, IL): For the so-called shoddy 2011 Napa vintage, this is fantastic. Producer over vintage all day long. There is so much of an old-school sensibility to this. Very judicious oak use, where it is more of a seasoning than an actual flavour. Plush, dark fruit, and a silky, refined texture on the palate. Sure, it won't be the longest-lived Napa wine, but there is already so much enjoyment to be had here.

I bought a selection of 1984 Diamond Creek wines at a charity auction that had been donated by a very well known collector here in Savannah. These wines: Volcanic Hill (2), Gravelly Meadow, and a Red Rock Terrace had all been sourced directly from the winery to the collector and cellared properly. I had the first of the two of the Volcanic Hill wines in the Spring of 1999. While excellent it was clear to me that this wine needed more time in the cellar. I continued to enjoy this collection over the years but continued to hold onto this 2nd bottle of VH. Actually, it was not my intention to hold this bottle this long but as I read the various comments of my fellow oenophiles, I decided to wait until my 75th birthday dinner of Loebel’s dry aged USDA Prime NY Strip steak that I cooked myself with my wife. So incredibly, this wine was no where near over the “hill”. The cork was still firm, the sediment was very acceptable, and honestly, it needed a good hour plus decant to shine. I was afraid to use our real decanter so I used our “Venturi” aerator to catch any potential sediment. My wife doesn’t drink red wine these days so enjoyed half of the bottle and then used my VacuVin to preserve the rest. Two days later, it was still amazingly vibrant! There was less fruit on the nose/bouquet but yet a richness of flavor that was reminiscent of black fruits and actually grapes! Remarkably, there was still a deep, dark color with no bricking or lightening of color! Would it have been better 5-10 years ago, who knows?

Birthday party (Chicago, IL): My favourite of the three 1984 cabernets tonight; it's still a bit volatile on the nose but the palate makes up for it. It's cleaner and shows more of a pure black fruit profile, as well as plenty of leathery tannins.

Good. Shy upon opening. A very reticent and introverted style of Napa Valley wine. More cerebral than the fireworks typically seen in early 2000s Napa reds. The tariff represents rarity moreso than life-changing juice.

Dinner with Paul and Jeff (The George Town Club - DC): Despite being forty years old, it remains very youthful character with an abundance of generous fruit. A hint of cassis but mostly red fruit, plum and cherry, scorched earth, lead pencil, a hint of green, leather and crushed rocks. Excellent concentration, generous red and black fruit, rich and unctuous but also fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long ripe red fruit driven finish with ash at the end. This reminds me the 92 Phillip Togni cab a bit, but more oaky, perhaps sweet American oak. May be a combination of Togni and Montebello. It doesn't have the complexity of a great Bordeaux but shows a lot of fruit. Really enjoyable and no need to hurry.
