2023 Château Haut-Bergey

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/4/2024 - Jeff Leve wrote: 91 points

Using less oak for the aging, the wine shows more elegance, with additional purity in its character. The wine is soft, fruity, ripe, and elegant, with a smoky edge to the cherries in the finish. Drink from 2026-2040. 90-92 Pts.

Delicious, and a good accompaniment to a thick ribeye, after a 4-hour decant and rebottling. There were notes of cocoa, vanilla, tobacco, and mixed black fruits, along with hints of leather and wintergreen. Yummy.

Similar to my tasting note from 2022. This wine continues to improve with age. It now tastes like how the 2000 vintage tasted at its peak. While still early maturity with loads of fruit, this is a beautiful Bordeaux through and through.

90-92 Punkte. Kräuterig und rotfruchtig im Duft, frisch am Gaumen, leichtfüssig, nicht sonderlich komplex, jedoch mit guter Harmonie und salinem, leicht herbem Finale. (En Primeur Tasting April 2024)

I have had 5 pr 6 bottles of this over the last 18-months and have experienced a great deal of variability bottle to bottle. When this is right it is really very good. The bottle tonight felt a little past its prime. Great mouth feel but just a bit of that burnt prune on the palate that felt over baked to me. Wine was begging for food and I enjoyed it more with some very sharp cheddar. If you have some I would enjoy them. Not a bottle I am going to seak out going forward. I have had a bunch of fun following this bottle over the last couple years. Think I have one or two left and will drink before the year is out. Stay tuned!

Hmmh - thought this wine had more tertiary notes (cooked/conserved fruit, mushroomy notes) than expected. Might not have been optimally cellared over the past 12 years though...

NIce nose of iron, blood, earth and chaulk. Maybe a tiny bit of horse stable. Mouth, like the nose but showing some char on the barrel and the tiniest bit of baked fruit. Very savory. Med+ bodied and pithy. Ready now, but could go longer. 90+pts. $26G.

3 days later in the fridge it was falling appart. 87

Another one that seems a bit corked. Drinkable but no rating. Has structure to continue to develop…agree that another 5 years seems reasonable.

Dark purpleish red with just a touch of age on the rim. Light intensity nose with red fruits, touch of oak, cedarwood, tobacco. Palate is medium bodied, easily accessible and friendly with more red fruits, chocolate, just your classic Bordeaux profile. Not very complex, but nice grippy tannins on the finish. Drinks well now, keeps for a while too. Nice "everyday" Bdx.

Typically a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (80%) and Sémillon (20%). MLF blocked. Aged for 10-12 months in French oak barriques (1/3 new).

Pale but also quite intense golden yellow with faint lime-green highlights. The nose feels rich and expressive with sweet-toned aromas of exotic fruits and sweet creamy oak notes, some vanilla nuances, a little bit of mango and greengage, light buttery tones, a hint of lemongrass and a touch of ripe golden currant. The wine feels dry yet ripe and somewhat concentrated on the palate with a moderately full body and quite intense flavors of ripe orange or pomelo-driven citrus fruits, some creamy and toasty oak tones, a little bit of steely minerality, light sweeter nuances of greengage and tropical fruits, a hint of vanilla and a touch of ripe Granny Smith apple. The mouthfeel is textural and slightly viscous, but the quite high acidity lends good sense of balance and freshness to the wine. The finish is long, firm and pretty acid-driven with a dry aftertaste of creamy oak, some lemon marmalade, light tart notes of passion fruit, a little bit of woody oak spice, a hint of vanilla and a touch of lemongrass.

This ripe Bordeaux Blanc felt still pretty big and surprisingly oaky for a 14-yo white wine, but even though I'm not a big fan of heavily oaked wines, I admit this wine showed enough depth, intensity and structure to come across as pretty impressive. The overall feel is a bit too sweet and oak-driven for my preference, but seeing how surprisingly youthful and vibrant the wine was at 14 years of age, I'm pretty convinced this wine will continue to age just fine, hopefully integrating some of that oak in the process. Most likely this wine needs at least 5-10 years to reach its plateau of maturity - possibly even more! Despite its glossy, somewhat oak-heavy leanings, this is a surprisingly nice Bordeaux Blanc with lots of upside.

Very nice and special Charakter. Less fruit than 2009 but great smell and taste heading towards tarmac after rain on a sunny spring day. Will probably gain one or two more points within the next 3 or 5 years but already enjoyable!

In a very good stage of development. The tertiaries are just starting to pop. Tannins are well absorbed, mouthfeel is silky, extract is plenty. This can age another 5 years easily. Great QPR.

* Opened 5 hours before serving (no decant).

Seems that many 2000 Bordeaux's are just singing right now, and I've noticed this to be especially true with top-tier Pessac-Leognan.

The 2000 Haut-Bergey is no exception, and surprisingly won the night for me, over a 2005 Branaire Ducru and a 1998 La Gaffeliere.

Color - Garnet, with a slightly lighter rim. Lively, but age is starting to show.

On the nose - Gorgeous notes of wild mushrooms, game, tobacco, espresso and earth, with lovely herbaceous aromas and a hint of leather. Secondary and tertiary notes, with great complexity and expressiveness.

In the mouth - Medium bodied, round, beautifully integrated. Lovely minerality at the core, supporting layers of lush dark fruit and a delicious, complex finish.

A beautiful wine, and it's apogee.
92+ points on the night. Drink now, no point in waiting.

Aromas of brambles, blackcurrant, plum all with a savoury underpin, forest floor, a little leather, earth, a sense of concentration and a touch of umami & blood. In the mouth it's juicy, fleshy, slight liquorice joins savoury brambly fruit, Autumnal, tannins are powdery and persistent all travel long assisted by a touch of non-intrusive alcohol warmth and a smidge of caramel. Lovely.

(40% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 1% Malbec, 13.5% Alkohol) Expressiv in der Nase, viel dunkle Frucht, Trockenkräuter, Koriandersamen, Zartbitterschokolade, Veilchen, sehr komplex. (Januar 2024)

Not bad for the price - purchased K&L SF $25+tax. But fades fast after ~20-30 mins. Nearing the end. Drink up! 2007 vintage not meant to be kept for this long.

Opened last night and the nose was a little funky to start; some people said baby diaper, but it was Frenchy for sure. Notes of leather soon followed. It became drinkable after an hour and after 3 hours I took it to Italian dinner. It opened up even better and popped with food. Don't wait too much longer so go for it.
