initial strong alcoholic, fumy quality. Burns on the palate afterwards. Not too much fruit. Waited too long?

non blind. nice colr and nose of stone and steel with hints of oak and vanilla. mouthfeels is burgundian to me with predominacne of stoney character with nice yellow fruit and acid. mouthfeel tells all as this seemed a bit out of balance. while the fruit is there, the tartness and stoney minerality dominate. not much oak character tonight - missing some buttery, vanilla character. finish is shorter than i'd like but very good none the less. too young? decant?

Not as rich as before. Nice vanilla, baked pear with butterscotch. Enough acidity to remain fresh, but pales to the prior tasting. Hopefully a bit of a dumb period.

Nose: Lemon peel and nag champa incense.
Palate: Green apple skins, lemons, and vanilla. Great balance between round fruit and linear acidity.
Finish: Medium

Opened at Anvil with Allred. Score really reflects the bottle after being open for over an hour and warming to above cellar temp. Lemon, vanilla and oak with bracing acidity. This needs time in cellar and will be spectacular.

Big buttery and creamy on the palate. Hints of lemon. Lots of oak. Not sure it's a great QPR, but still a great example of a big California Chard. Very Good!

Outstanding wine especially when it is only slightly chilled. Wish we had more! Our bottle tasted lemony, creamy, with a hint of oak. Really fills the mouth with a lot of flavor.

Lemon cream. Pears. Some minerals. Very good wine with a lot of complexity, but a bit oakier than I like.

I also brought this wine to the SAFW tasting. Quite similar to my tasting of the wine on 7-29-11, except the nose is not so closed as it had been. The nose consists of complex aromas of lemon, baked apple, tropical fruit, butter. In the mouth, flavors of baked apple, lemon custard and minerals. The oak is restrained and nicely integrated into the wine. A long and extended finish. This wine has evolved into a fabulous chardonnay.

This has really come to a special place. Beautiful SCM fruit almost heading towards reductive but in a really well made way. And still very tight on the back end. I assume this means its going to go a long way.

Young but fabulous. Not taking a back seat to the excellent Bee Block Chardonnay. Floral, open, approachable but with room to improve. I will wait at least another year to have this one again maybe even make it a holiday ritual.

non blind and only my second encounter with this winery. lovely clarity in the glass. nose of mineral, acid, lemon. palate is dominated (?to a fault) with acidic fruit and brazen minerality. missing roundness for sure. kept waiting for the balance to appear but it never did. finish was as expected and shorter than should have been. hopeful that this will come around. i am not against non creamy, burgundian style chard, i just think this (or any wine) should have balance, and this didn't.

Received as a gift. If you like high-toned Pinot with acid and minerality, this is terrific. If you like sappy California Pinot, this will not be your style.

The most saline and burgundian though mineral component works nicely and a lovely balance between new and old world. Lemon, lemon rind with more pear than apple flavor. Plenty of acidity while being medium bodied with great mouth feel. Balanced.

Very nice, though the most introverted of the three Varner Chards. Nice nose. Maybe a bit closed, and enough acidity to wait. The oak frame is a bit noticable, but this isn't your bombastic Napa Chard. Light on it's feet, more buttered popcorn than brown butter and a bit less voluminous than Amphitheater.

Decanted 30 min. Delicious. Brown butter, butterscotch, apple with a mineral finish, tons of depth here with all the stuffing. Well integrated and balanced. Plus finish. The most new-world Varner block.

Very very good. Not too oaky, terrific rich flavors. The nose had a sweet candy like smell, but the flavors were very sophisticated! Wish I had more.
