Sight: medium tawny
Nose: leather, spice, dusty and old. No fruits
Palate: light body. Bark is worse than it’s bite. No fruits, leather, not very pleasant, but not undrinkable. Way past it’s prime.

Licorice, flowers, red, white and black cherries pop in the nose. On the palate, the wine is soft, creamy, round and fresh, with a nice, plummy character in the finish. Drink from 2024-2037.

Ripe, sweet, black cherries, flowers, licorice and smoke fill the nose here. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, soft, fresh and creamy with a strong, refreshing, spearmint and herb note on the backend. The wine is made from a small parcel of100% old vine Merlot planted in 1961. Drink from 2024-2037.

Color: Deep Ruby.
Aromatic Intensity: M+.
Sweetness: Dry.
Acidity: M+.
Tannin Level: High.
Tannin Nature: Ripe, chalky.
Alcohol: H (14.0%).
Body: Full.
Flavor Intensity: M+.
Aroma & Flavor Characteristics: Blackberry, black cherry, black plum, licorice, sharpened pencil, garrigue, charred wood, baking spice, espresso grounds. Fruit is concentrated and ripe.
Other Observations:
Finish: M+.
Quality: Very Good. The fruit concentration, tannin, and alcohol are in balance, with the medium(+) acid adding vibrancy to what otherwise would be a “heavy” wine. If the intensity and finish were longer, or there were a little more complexity of flavors, this wine would be outstanding.
Aging: Suitable for aging. There is a lot of concentrated black fruit that can transition into tertiary flavors and aromas, adding complexity. The tannins would also benefit from softening further. The medium(+) acid and high tannins, along with the high alcohol, will ensure the wine is well-preserved as it slowly ages.

This was a fun one. Probably way past its prime, but still a good drink. Brick color, minimal fruit, still a good bit of acidity and a little tannin left. Dusty/moldy (in a not so bad way) but that faded quickly.

Les tannins se sont assagis, le vin a développé quelques arômes tertiaires de cuir, de mousse, mais conserve encore un peu de fruits. Très peu de lies au fond de la bouteille. C’est vraiment très bon.

Beautiful nose of ripe and cooked red fruit, warm spices, and campfire. Flavors of black cherry, blackberry, warm baking spices, pipe tobacco, campfire, and forest floor. Fruit is fully ripe. I love the producer, and this particular vintage is a little unbalanced, though still very drinkable. Oak isn't fully integrated, sitting on top of the fruit. Alcohol presents on the finish as a little hot. Glassy polished tannin texture on the sip transitions nicely to very fine-grained on the finish. Flavor and aroma intensity: M+. Body: M+, with a smooth texture. Tannin: M+. Acid: M+. Finish: M. Good, with the alcohol impact most affecting the quality perception.

Smoke, oak, espresso, and chocolate-covered plums are at the core of this wine. Supple in texture, with layers of silky, fresh, sweet black cherries and chocolate, this is going to be delicious on release, and it has the stuff to age as well. This is easily the finest vintage of Couvent des Jacobins produced yet. Drink from 2023-2042.

There is a wealth of fruit here as you find black, red and blue fruits meshed with smoke, cocoa, licorice, crushed rocks and flowers in the nose. On the palate, the wine is opulent, vibrant, long and deep. There is flesh and freshness in the finish that carries through to the hedonistic endnote. Drink from 2024-2045.

Intensity medium. Cherry, blackberry, blueberry, black currant, vanilla, oak. Acidity medium. Tannins medium (+). Finish medium.
I was largely distracted and put off by a greasy/waxy odeur that no one else noticed, but dominated my opinion quite negatively.

At Singer & Foy survey of '89 Bordeaux. Good, relatively dark ruby color. Nose is rich, with a heavy Merlot component. I thought I detected mint or mentholatum. Very light on the palate, but with very good flavor. Extremely accessible at this stage. Lovely actually. 5-10-16-7: 88/100.

Wine is dark red, slightly purplish in color.

The nose is very lovely sweet candied plums, blackberries and bluberry tart.

The wine has round tannins, good mouthfeel, and a lot of fruit. Chako found the tannins still a bit rougher than she would like. But we enjoyed this wine. 89-90 pts. This winery is right next to our apartment.

Tasted at Etablissement Martin in St Emilion.
