  • 2017 Château La Vieille Cure

Still very youthful-looking in the glass. An attractive, dark crimson almost right up to the edge. Very expressive on the nose. Complex, alluring scents of flowers, earth, pine needles and spice jump from the glass. Full-bodied, rich and plush in texture. Definitely modern in style - but not overdone. Loaded with juicy, ripe plum and dark currant fruit character, with a huge dose of sweet baking spices. Almost like liquid gingerbread. There's excellent depth on the mid-palate and the long finish features silky tannins that are well-integrated. Quite a unique flavor profile for a Fronsac. So unusual, complex and delicious. 92++

  • 2016 Château d'Issan

Brought with us to Seared 1200 steakhouse in St. Pete Beach, so this did not get a lengthy decanting. A very attractive, semi-opaque magenta in color - right up to the edge. The nose on this was just fabulous. Very pretty and captivating scents of flowers, earth and cedar fill the glass. Extremely elegant in texture and weight. Offers a delicious combination of tangy plum and dark currant fruit, deftly matched to a moderate acidity. There’s good depth to the mid-palate. Complex notes of iron, mineral and coffee grace the long, polished finish. The dusty tannins are integrating nicely. Poised, well-balanced and delicious. This is a charming, textbook Margaux with a distinctly old-school feel.

  • 2015 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Superiore

From magnum. Brought with us to Prime 88 in Brooksville to share with friends. Still a youthful-looking, dark magenta in color - right up to the edge. Very powerful and complex aromas of leather, tobacco, baking spices and Tuscan soil on the nose. On the palate this took a good 45 minutes to finally open up. Kept getting better and better throughout the evening. Full-bodied and rich in texture, but not over done. Bursting with a dazzling assortment of dark currant, plum and blackberry fruit flavors. Shows excellent depth and focus on the mid-palate. Finishes extremely long with prominent notes of licorice, spice and mineral. The velvety tannins are just beginning to integrate in this format. Complex, harmonious and delicious. A magnificent Guado al Tasso that is powerful, yet elegant. Paired beautifully with the Porterhouse for two that Kerry and I shared.

7/29/2021 5:24:00 PM - I just added a note on the '18 Oreno. Has the house style changed in recent years? Salute!

  • Brad T says:

12/10/2020 2:32:00 PM - Thank you for the comment on my tasting note on Oreno 2011! I'm also sitting on the 2004, 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016 vintages, and so far, I have loved every one of them.

  • tjtrot says:

6/1/2020 9:14:00 AM - thanks for the comments on the Petra Toscano Zingari

  • Motz says:

1/31/2020 7:45:00 AM - Congrats to you and your charming bride. What a great place for the proceedings. It seems that you pulled off a minor miracle. Godspeed to you both.

  • Motz says:

1/30/2020 9:09:00 AM - Great picture, Bam_Man. The white you are both wearing suggests nuptials.

  • BuzzzzOff says:

5/29/2016 9:15:00 PM - Good to be friends and fans, Bam_Man. Ah, yes, the journey from one buck chuck to Super Tuscans and Montrachet has been fun...hiccup!

  • COWineLover says:

1/20/2015 7:31:00 PM - Thanks for your note about the 2008 Monteti Toscana IGT. You know how much I value your notes, so when I received free ground shipping from a CA retailer lowering inventory before they relocate at $20 a bottle, a case was a no brainer.

  • partylikeakennedy says:

12/8/2014 8:44:00 AM - OMG yes, it's drinking perfectly right now!! The sommelier at the restaurant did recommend that we get to it within the next 6 months or so -- he thinks it's peaking now -- but it's a pretty impressive run for a chianti nonetheless!

  • partylikeakennedy says:

11/17/2014 7:27:00 AM - Right? I was very surprised! Pinot isn't the first thing I think of when I think of NZ either. Happy to make new discoveries like this!

  • COWineLover says:

11/13/2014 9:08:00 PM - Bam_Man Have you tried the 2004 or 2006 Tenuta Carlina La Togata BdM? I would be curious on your thoughts if you have. I own but have not tasted the 2004 and wondering if I should procure some 2006. Many thanks as always.

  • COWineLover says:

10/25/2014 8:03:00 PM - Thanks for your reassuring note on the 2004 Poggio il Castellare BdM. Every time I pull a Suckling rated wine I never know what to expect, so I appreciate the insight and the recommendation to give it some air time. Cheers :D

  • COWineLover says:

10/23/2014 6:26:00 PM - Thanks Bam_Man for the comment on the 2009 La Tour de Mons. I think you and I share doubts about how Suckling came to his rating notes, and this wine bears that out. I hope Suckling proves me wrong when I finally pull a top on the 2004 Il Poggio Castellare BdM or the 2004 La Togata BdM. I worry about what I will find inside.

  • partylikeakennedy says:

10/15/2014 9:09:00 AM - Oh man! Sorry to hear that the Margaux sucked, but I'm feeling validated too that you agree with me! Oh well, live & learn! If it's too good to be true, it probably is!

  • partylikeakennedy says:

10/10/2014 10:44:00 AM - Lololol!!!! I don't believe in moderation, that's just boring! Let me know how the Margaux is....I'm hoping your bottles are okay!

  • partylikeakennedy says:

10/3/2014 7:54:00 AM - Ha ha! Well you never know, we could have had a bad bottle. Since you've got four on hand, why not open one and give it a try? If it's good, let me know and maybe we'll pick up another bottle to give it another chance!

  • Motz says:

9/11/2014 5:21:00 PM - Bam_Man, I tasted two Italian wines today that made a serious impression. One was the 2006 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Vigna Asinone, probably the best Vino Nobile I have tasted. The other was the 2006 Rocca delle Macìe Ser Gioveto Toscana IGT. That is a great wine that can be had for great QPR.

4/10/2014 3:00:00 PM - Thanks for posting the scoring method you use. I've been looking for that.

  • Motz says:

4/6/2014 11:00:00 AM - Bam_Man, Why don't you look through my cellar for a WA wine that appeals to you. As a starting point I can suggest the Ex Umbris, Robert Ramsay Par la Mer, 2010 Neufeld, and 2010 Fidelitas Champoux. I've written notes on the first three wines, and on the 2008 vintage of the last one.

10/26/2013 5:47:00 PM - Hey Bam_Man, I was impressed by this great wine. Do you know anything about it? At around $30 it's a steal. Thought you might be interested. I reviewed it here. 2009 Tre Monti Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore Riserva Thea

10/18/2013 12:58:00 AM - Good call....I will definitely put some away to try again in a few years.

  • LindaFox says:

10/13/2013 7:43:00 PM - Okay, but only because you asked nicely.

  • LindaFox says:

10/11/2013 9:14:00 PM - You are hilarious and, yes, that is correct.

  • Champagneinhand says:

10/1/2013 8:37:00 PM - That's awesome you admit to drinking white Zin from Gallo. I used to do Carlo Rossi every now and then with pizza or Italian food, but it was their mock Chianti. Masseto. Had somebody back out at the last second as that very bottle was on the agenda. Buy lots of Galatrona and hold on to it for 15 + years and I think you will not be disappointed. Same goes for almost every red wine from Tua-Rita you can afford.

  • CCestaro says:

9/28/2013 10:38:00 PM - Our wine club is making an on line purchase from your main Florida retailer....all clear from your seat .?

  • Derek Darth Taster says:

  • roybivens says:

8/19/2013 8:41:00 AM - I have noticed that you seem to have a specific, segmented scoring system to arrive at a final score for a wine. Is this true, and if so, would you be willing to share your method?

  • Motz says:

8/9/2013 5:57:00 PM - Hey Bam_Man, I have an opportunity to pick up the Ricasoli Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio 2006 for $55. I noticed you have a few bottles, but I didn't see a tasting note from you on it. Any thoughts on this wine? Would you recommend the purchase?

  • soyhead says:

7/24/2013 8:28:00 AM - Thanks for your note. Yes the oreno 06 is just not ready. Cheers!

  • Kris G says:

5/8/2013 11:01:00 AM - I opened another bottle of the Bramasole 2006 Syrah : way over its top, I find it strange > I suspect a too hot storage before I bought it, this evolution is not a natural one : it has becomen "tertiaire" as the French call it, no fruit or tannins left : just rotten wood :( ashame : I loved this wine in an earlier stage

  • slrankin says:

4/22/2013 8:20:00 AM - Bam_Man- I got your note about the 2005 Carpazo B di M.. You have more faith than I do in the ability of the wine to develop over time. I have 5 more bottles of this and will follow your lead and give them time. I hope your are correct. I do like the wine- am just hoping for a bit more heft. Thanks for the advice. Steve (slrankin)

  • wfdeacon says:

2/28/2013 5:19:00 PM - I agree, lots of great '07 California Cab's, the year reminds me of '97, where you just stocked up. I have, but have not tried the '09. Just saying in general M's Oakville is a solid product.

  • Motz says:

2/26/2013 10:50:00 AM - Bam_man, I am temporarily living in FL for school. My email is located on my profile page. Drop me a line if you're so inclined.

  • Bam_Man says:

2/26/2013 7:53:00 AM - Yes, you're right. It was taken in the tasting room at Fattoria Lornano in Tuscany. Unfortunately, the lighting was less than ideal.

  • Motz says:

2/25/2013 6:37:00 PM - Where was your profile picture taken? Looks like Southern Europe from the architecture.
