Pours a medium gold in the glass. Developing med + intensity aromas of honey, orange marmalade, lemon, white peach, yellow apple, quince, apricot, white fig, wet rocks, hazelnuts, toast, vanilla. In the mouth, the wine is dry, full body, med acid, high alcohol, med + palate intensity, med finish. Overall, good/very good. I feel like this wine is overdeveloped for being 5yrs old. The wine is very fleshy in the mouth, which is what I was expecting, alcohol is noticeable and stands out in front, I also wanted a bit more acid, longer finish, and expected a bit more intensity in both the nose and mouth.

I see that some compare this wine to Condrieu- there's no viognier in this wine, St. Joseph blanc is typically marsanne dominant with some roussanne, I feel like comparing the two throws expectations off from what either is or should be.

Decanted 30+ minutes ( higher score certain if I was more diligent in my decant timing!! Likely 2 hours would bring about less character assassination?😂)

Don't open for 5 years+.
It's certainly drinkable now, but could easily benefit with a half decade of maturation.

Medium+ Ruby
Raspberries Blackberries
Black pepper prominent!
Sage Rosemary?
Smokey, (like cooking in the campfire where that smoke follows you wherever you move!)

Body medium+
Alcohol high
Acid high
Viscosity mouthfeel medium enveloping
Tannin medium, soft and resolving, (more structured with ox exposure)
Finish 45s+

Served w Black Angus Porterhouse( I kept the tenderloin, gave wife the Strip!😂) First day of warmth here in Alberta's Wild West!🤠

Syrah%
Viognier %??
14% abv

This should be an annual purchase, as it's approachable early, yet can withstand the test of time in a cold cellar.

PS Drink The Rainbow!

At a Rhone wine theme dinner with friends, served blind, decanted for few hours & it really needed it, most guessed a Northern Rhone & a Lala, very dark, full bodied, meaty, complex but still young

Opulent, dense and complex. Deep matured black berries, chocolate, roast aromas, leather, liquorice, herbs, framed by noble cask. Long, fresh, phenolic finish. Very young, requiring another 5-10 years to reach optimum.

Again too young. Cherries, vanilla, tobacco, violet, in a sweetish balance with violet and almost perfumed notes. I should again wait another three years or so for the next one.

In some ways a by-the-books Northern Rhone Syrah. Dark cherry notes with smoked plum, black olive, mint, and a long, forest-floor finish, with a tannin structure that’s very much present but by no means overwhelming. We split a bottle of this with a rack of lamb and some beef tartare, nailed it.

Exploring Northern Rhone Syrah (Paris): Primary fruit, intense, lots of wood vanilla, decadent élevage. Palate : Intense cassis coulis, mocha, a touch too sweet for me, still have to wait a little to have everything integrate more A touch milky ? Well made, consensual, international style, very Guigal, not a terroir wine. Blind, it would be tough to guess Northern Rhone vs. new world Syrah.

Thomas’s Northern Rhone extravaganza (Cabotte): So good. Much fresher than its flight-mate, of course, with a nose centred on stone fruit but seemingly ever-changing in character. Still a bit of oak, too. Rounded and juicily-fruited on the palate, with overarching minerality and some trademark Marsanne bitterness on the finish (as well as a touch of heat - it's 14.5%). I find this wine quite variable between vintages, as it pushes the envelope in terms of ripeness and elevage, but this 2015 was popular around the table. My #5 wine tonight.

Robe d'un joli violet. Nez complexe, fruits noirs, fleurs, épices. En bouche, on retrouve les mêmes marqueurs avec une pointe de vanille. Ça manque peut-être un poil de matière mais c'est vraiment très bon!

Nose: Peach, lychee, flowers, some alcohol.
Palate: Mirrors the nose, but with the addition of pineapple and almond. Fairly full bodied, medium acidity, but never feels flabby.

Vino maravilloso

Initially, this was just a test to find a quaffable wine for summer fin times. Turns out, it's a little more serious, even Tavel like in it's make up. And, it's $22 CAD!

And after quaffing this with a air fried potlatch salmon, I'll be buying much more of this for an afternoon patio lunch, brunch, dinner, charcuterie etc.
It's really good, for what it is supposed to be.

Beautiful salmon pink color, in a clear bottle that shows whirls engrained in the shoulder and the punt. Definitely an easily marketed wine.
If I didn't know Guigal's quality, and if this has a huge heavy glass bottle, I would stay away from it.
But, this looks to me like the perfect Valentine's Day wine...note to self! ❤️
Beautiful. And Guigal well made!

Medium Pink with a shimmer of orange
Very floral if not overly chilled.

Raspberries strawberries on entry.
Then, mid palate, kind of a cooked, that caramelized sugar from the fruit ( like when doing a flambee' of cherries jubilee or the oranges and juices with Crepes Suzette)
Flint or that slate or wet stone.

Dry
Body light, medium
Alcohol high
Acid high
Viscosity mouthfeel is rather less enveloping as I'd like
Tannins hardly noticable
Finish medium 30-45s

70% Grenache,
20% Cinsault,
10% Syrah

The QPR on this wine, is quite amazing...$22CAD.
Just bought another 24. Hopefully summer lands soon.

PS- Drink The Rainbow!

Double filteted/decanted. Loads of sediment & funky nose to start but quickly opened up. Perfect with duroc chop pan fried with shrooms & pancetta layered into mushroom ravioli. I sensed savory acidity ala pomegranate seeds that have started to ferment with a nice savory earthiness. Long red fruit finish with just a hint of absinthe. Past its prime? Not for me, evolving character of really well aged wines like this is a lovely unique experience.

Storartat!

Very unimpressed. Had just come from a wine tasting with a couple of excellent whites, and this bottle struck both the wife and me as very basic and one-note. Disappointed.

A magnum donated from the Guigal cellars. Fruit came off La Pòmmiere, the first vineyard Etienne worked at the age of 14. The wine spent 36 months in two new oak barrels. It has never been commercially released and is offered at charity auctions to raise funds for good causes. The wine is inky and powerful. There are black fruits a plenty and a strong ironstone character. It has light florals and some wood spice. It is deep and chewy, finishing with chalky grip and possessing incredible length of flavour.

Classic Guigal. Dark red fading to brick in the glass. Nose is bacon grease, bloody game, and strawberries with faint hints of eucalyptus.

This was popped and poured and it put on decent weight in no time. Taste was more of the same. A bbq in a glass.

Wow, what a wine. I picked up a sealed six-pack plus one bottle. So, I left the single bottle in the car when I put the six-pack in the cellar. It was pretty warm outside, but I thought nothing of it. When I got home, I was surprised that the bottle was very warm and leaking. Well, I decided to PnP the warm wine, and to my surprise, it was amazing. Having spent 40 months in new oak, I found it was well-integrated and had loads of dark fruit. I decanted the rest in the fridge to cool it down, then passed out and forgot about it. Woke up and found the decanter in the fridge. So, I thought I would give it a go later in the day. And I did, and it was just as good as it was the night before. It just seemed like the tannins came through, but in a good way. If you can get your paws on a couple of bottles, do so, and you will be happy. I just picked up three more bottles. I see now why Jeb updated his score (3/28/2024), and it went up a couple of points, and he was flirting with using words such as perfect wine or pinnacle.
