2008 Gérard Raphet Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes

Pinot Noir more

4/24/2024 - ankitmehra Likes this wine: 92 points

This was a wine I thoroughly enjoyed tracking over the course of the night. My first experience with Gérard Raphet as a producer, I was eager to try this the day I got it, but waited a month until I opened this bottle up. The wine immediately came off a little thin, but I persevered and allowed it to slow oxidise for about two hours before dinner.

What a difference two hours makes.

The power of the wine began to emerge the moment we poured it into our glasses, boasting a nose consisting of blackberries, leather and tobacco. The palate opened up with an upfront that pushed a balance of raspberries and a funky sous bois note. The mid-palate continued on with that funk as a hint of blackcurrant medlied with a mossy / vegetal note that eventually became subdued. The finish was really powerful as notes of iron, leather and spices all medlied together across some well integrated acidity. This was a wine worth letting open up.

Howard Ripley portfolio tasting: Exhibits what I'm gathering is a Castagnier signature of pure, deep, almost artificially dense fruit. Here it's complemented by darker coffee and animal tones. Spherical, rich on the palate, smooth with acidity lifting the finish. It's not a style that truly excites me but there's no question it's really good stuff

Served en magnum. Spicy nose, dark and brooding. Good concentration but too young and not as interesting as the ‘09 Morey Grives served alongside. Maybe in several more years this will improve. 92

2010 Charles Noellat Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Pinot Noir more

4/23/2024 - apple1813 Likes this wine: 91 points

(*This following tasting note refers to another Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru wine produced by the same winery, but with a specified lieu-dit, Chaffots. Adding a new wine has become exceedingly difficult after a recent update of the CellarTracker interface.*)

2010 Charles Noellat Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Les Chaffots is vibrant, perfumed and detailed. The wine is bottled under a natural cork, in contrast to DIAM-cork enclosure for the generic Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru from the same producer. The developing Morey Pinot Noir is clear and pale ruby in colour without any noticeable sediments. Expressive aromas of blackberry, violet and lilac are followed by sweet wood spices and truffle chocolate.

The mouthfeel is dry and medium-bodied, with a rather high level of lively acidity and a medium level of silky tannin. There are flavours of cranberry, red plum, crushed flowers and sweet spices in a rather long, delineated finish. The alcohol level is 13%. The empty bottle weighs 593 grams.

4/22/2024 - apple1813 Likes this wine: 90 points

2010 Charles Noellat Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru seems aromatically closed at the moment. The bottle is sealed under a DIAM-10 cork. The developing Morey Pinot Noir is clear and pale ruby in colour without any noticeable sediments. The bottle is likely reconditioned prior to the recent release.

Reticent aromas of red plum, wild strawberry and violet are followed by touches of earth, cocoa powder and liquorice spices. The wine does not seem to open up over five hours in the evening.

The dry and medium-bodied mouthfeel is complemented with a medium-high level of acidity and a medium level of supple, integrated tannin. There are flavours of brambleberry, black cherry, white mushroom and wood spices in a medium, savoury finish. While the mouthfeel shows signs of maturity, the nose does not show a consistent level of tertiary complexities. The alcohol level is 13%. The empty bottle weighs 576 grams.

Nice red burgundy. Aromatic Red cherry. Rhubarb. Earth. Subtle spice.

Elegant on the palate, sneaky good length.

Really reductive nose to start. Needed several hours to blow off and was much better day 2. Recommend either a lengthy decant or hold. Drank beautifully once ready.

This is what you hope for when you open a bottle of Burgundy. Fired on all cylinders. Nose roared from the glass with black fruits, and musky MSD aromas. Was stoney and had an incredible intriguing earthiness that made you unable to put your glass down. Silky palate. Idk I have had good luck with 2011 Burgundy despite the negative press. This was the WOTN alongside a 2013 Lignier Chabiots, and a 2001 Gaja Sori Tildin. A bottle drank months later was not quite as impressive but still very good with the same flavors and aromas.

This is a very dense and dark fruited wine. While it has elegance and a decently silky texture, and not as ripe as some '20 red Burgs I've had, it just feels a little too brooding and big for my preference.

Red and blue berry scents introduce a pliant wine that needs to develop more depth, and framed by a fiery tannic structure, ending with grip. The grumpy tannins which have started to mellow from last year, have lost some dryness, which is a good sign, and this wine still needs 5 years in the cellar to be ready.

A hint of reduction on the nose, swirling brings some blue fruits notes, followed by a sappy and rich mouthfeel, blending a rich fruited mid palate and typical Morey structrure and tannic grip. This is a tad better than the first time I had it two years ago. Fine textbook Clos Sorbe, and on the plus side, no trace of heat/stewed fruits. Cellar until 2028.

Opened an hour before serving, then enjoyed over three+ hours. Plenty of ripe red cherries, both faintly sweet and very savory with a trace of roasted meat. Not the most complex Morey 1er Cru, but well balanced and persistent with good+ weight and depth. At a good place now, with some possible further upside. Good for another decade+.

Yes, this is at a mature stage, especially given the vintage. But it showed well and was not overly oxidized beyond the 17 years. It was still showing apple and pear flavors and some marzipan. Somewhat like an apple pie but more on the savory elements. FORCEBERRY really captures it well so I won't try to improve on that except that 3 years later the premier cru quality still shows. I also will agree that this vintage is/was earlier maturing than the 2006 which is still in it's prime.
