Napa 2003 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis (gift from a friend's estate). Dark garnet, brick edges; black fruit, cassis, herbaceous nose; mint; blackberries; mid-body (13.8 alc.); medium acids and tannins; semi-tight still; long medium black fruit and wood finish. Sediment. w/tri tip. 16.5 UC Davis scale, 91 other scales.

I opened this with a lot of trepidation given the recent reviews, and we were very pleasantly surprised. Well balanced fruit with enough acidity left and very soft tannins. Good body. Well integrated flavors of graphite and eucalyptus with a little espresso. Everyone else at the table was blinded to the wine and thought it was a mature Bordeaux.

In the bin with some other bottles that may have been (temporarily) forgotten...PnP with hamburgers. Cork came out clean
Dark garnet core color. Nose was faint, showing some red fruits. Palate of red fruits, dark cherry, earth notes. Not much on mid palate. Tannins resolved, medium weight and finish.
Mostly gone at this point, this was worth trying and may be more alive for other tasters. This bottle was not bad but probably 5-7 years past its peak. I am a big fan of SLWC, the Cask 23, SLV and Fay are among Napa's best (and age worthy wines). I expect less from the Artemis, meant to be drunk young and riced accordingly in their portfolio.

Let me first preference by saying the Stag's Leap collection (Artemis, Fay, S.L.V., Cask 23, etc.) are fantastic, without a doubt classic Napa Cab with great fruit and roundness.
About a year prior to tasting the 2003 Artemis, I tried the 2005 Artemis after 4 hours of decant. The wine was absolutely fabulous.
However, the 2003 is lacking compared to the other vintages. Given the professional reviews and customer reviews for this vintage, I can assume that my bottle was not flawed, rather the 2003 vintage was much flatter and softer compared to other years.
Tasted it right after opening and I was worried the bottle has been oxidized (cork was slightly depressed at ~2mm); it tasted flat and watery. I let it open up for 2 hours and the fruit came forward. Soft tannins if at all. Little flat grape finish but nothing too bad. Overall, it was a good wine but it just lacked the kick and robustness that a Napa Cab at this price point should have. I don't blame the age, I think it was just a bad year. I still give it 88pts since the Artemis is just so delicious. It just has the umami factor that I do not find in a lot of wines.
I would recommend the 2004-2012 vintages. 2000-2003 seem to be bad years for Stag's Leap winery.

This wine seems to be getting much better with more time. Maybe it was going through one of those famous closed phases for my previous tastings (~1 year ago). It is beginning to have a nose of interest with relatively nice cab fruit. It is showing more balance than before and actually has some taste from beginning to finish. There is huge variation in the tasting notes of others. Maybe the wine maker got his casks mixed up for the quality wine and the crappy wine. This is unfortunate for him, as I have been avoiding this brand as of late.

With all the so-so reviews I was nervous on this wine and was pleasantly suprised and very happy. This wine also still has so age left in it. Showed quite a bit better than expected per its professional reviews and previous tastings of this and other vintages. This aged well showing light signs of brick red at the rim. Nose of dark cherries, leather, earth and light floral notes. Palate shows more nice dark cherry, cassis, horse saddle, and cigar box. Nice soft tannins with a well balanced finish lend to a solid wine. I don't know if it's bottle variation, but I tasted this numerous times with consistent notes on this occasion.

This wine continues to disappoint with every bottle I drink, particularly at the price paid. There is little to recommend in the nose. The taste has a harshness that overwhelms whatever fruit is to be found. There is not a lot of tannin or acid, causing one to note the lack of much of any character. A very unimpressive wine from a well known and reputable winery.

Dark purple. Blueberries and roast meat nose. Coco, earth. Nice light mouth feel, not a new world extraction, true to her roots, a 70's style Cali cab. Almost French in it's approach. Subtle fruit, acid perfect with fine tannins all there in a front mid and back transition. Good winemaking just prob not the best fruit slw has.

Solid Cali Cab. Green olive and herb nose. Bit of pepper. Dried cranberries, strawberries and earth nose. Light mouth feel and palate, though not in a bad way. Good fruit on the front & mid palate, decent finish with the tannins, leather oak all in restraint, yet a solid backbone.
Day 2. More open nose, all there, same just open. Gains more weight. Big oak and tannin finish, not monstored up, but there. Fruit, acid, oak, tannin for the long haul? Also not an extracted fruit bomb, so kudo's to sticking to the plan. Not sure. But a decent representation of the cali nv cab.

This wine completely evolved over 3 hours. Had I scored it when I first opened it, it would have been much lower. Still no anywhere the 70 WS gave it, but clearly lower. Great color, nice and jammy looking. When first opened a scent of eucalyptus and high alcohol were dominant which thankfully wore off after decanting for 2 hours. One unusual note, the first glass I had was after about 2 hours of decanting and there was very strong cranberry flavors which disappeared after the first glass. Full dark fruit spectrum with a healthy serving of strawberry on top. Earthy/leather characteristics on the mid palate. Lush mouthfeel and smooth on the finish. Can't put my finger on what it is this wine is missing but just doesn't blow me away. Still a good to very good wine and would probably buy again.

WS rating is far too low for this wine (at 70). Definitely a nice bottle and well crafted. nose is somewhat off-putting. a bit of alcohol there. There is some cassis and definite tannins. Medium to long finish. Bottle was a gift so hard to say what the QPR was. I probably would buy this for a 30$ price, maybe a bit more, but not more than $40.

A darker garnet and smoky heavy look. This wine holds its color to the edge. The first aroma is surprisingly underwhelming. A musty cedar, deep berries, earthy currant, and sand. Later a oak and citrus bouquet. A smell of mustiness pervades?? The taste is even more disappointing. Deadened leaf and wood floor are immediate. This wine is also chokingly thick. Overall I would say that this bottle should have been flawed, but all signs point to this being a disappointment instead of a corked bottle. I do not have much experience with the Stags Leap area so it may just be my juveniles palate.

Really nice wine. Heavy blackberry, black currant on the nose. Great fruit emerging from this wine. On the palate is wonderful dark fruit with a bite of clay and mint. Tannins are very smooth and there is a substantial finish. I don't think this one has the structure and body to age a long time, but when it tastes this good now, who cares. Very good effort.

I liked it right out of the bottle. But the others felt it needed to open. We had it at a restaurant w/o a decanter so it would have been better to decant for at least an hour. This is a good basic wine that can be enjoyed for quite a while.

Excellent cab. Elegant and soft, opened with some time. Drank it blind against a 2002 Mondavi Reserve and 2003 Caymus Special Selection. They were much more complex as expected but two of the four people picked the Artemis as number one. For the price it held up well against the big labels.

A vibrant nose of plum, cassis, nutmeg, black licorice and hints of rosemary greets the taster, with additional layers of raspberry, tealeaf, rose petals and vanilla. Concentrated fl avors of black cherry, plum, cassis, baked cherry pie, cocoa, toast, and allspice intermingle with dusty tannins, hints of white pepper and tobacco. Perfectly balanced and fi rmly structured, this wine has signifi cant aging potential and is ready to enjoy now with an herb-stuffed turkey accompanied by a velvety chestnut soup.

Consumed unblinded from the Vintage Wines, Ltd. wine bar. Bright disc. Black robe with purple rim. Clean nose, showing quite intense aromas of black currants, black cherry and vanilla. Full-bodied on the palate, with liberal oak and slightly tart acidity (making me wonder if this ripe wine was acidified by the winemaker). Massive but supple tannins. The flavors mirror the nose and lead to a medium, slightly hot finish.

A bit dissappointed since we have loved past vintages. A very strong earthy and musty character that remained throughout the bottle even after breathing for a few hours. Did improve with time and probably would not open another until 2008 or later.

Elegant, velvet feel. Soft for a cabernet. Subtle but gorgeous finish. 2nd night in the bottle was not holding up as well, but still very good.

The wine exhibited a great deal of alcohol as soon as the cork was opened. The flavor was not complex even after decanting for an hour. I have to agree with the ratings that this is a wine to store for another couple of years.
