Gentle aeration for 3 1/2 hours prior to serving. Primary appearing deep ruby with little lightening. Strong menthol scents at first joined by ripe fruit later. Medium weight with lovely layering. Red and blue fruit, a veneer of soil, and clove spice. Not a bit too ripe, some tannins remained. This lost its vigor after being open for several more hours, in contrast to a magnum 6 years ago which kept going strong for the entire evening. Fading but still mightily impressive.

Trio of 1983, 1990, & 1991: The 1983 was lovely, graceful, and charming, all in an understated way. Essentially everything you want with this vintage. The 1990 was robust, and a bit of a bruiser. Great fruit, drank very well, yet still an adolescent at age 32. The 1991 was class in a glass, and ultimately my favorite. While the phrase balanced is out of vogue with many tasters, this was balanced (there, I said it). Edging into its tertiary phase, the 1991 is simply a complete and fantastic wine. The trio was a great example of 1+1+1 equaling much more than 3. A delightful tasting.

This was a double blind horizontal tasting by Mike, across four bottlings. This wine had a deep red center with puce/orange rims. It was actually slightly lighter at the rim than other bottlings. The medium+ intensity nose was comprised of cherry cola, plum, brown spice, and mineral notes.
In the mouth, this wine was balanced with great weight, acidity, and length. It also sported attractively rounded tannin. It showed lovely fruit as well as mineral intensity.
While this wine will last at this level for 10 years or so, I don't see any reason to wait.

- 1st bot corked. - A really powerful wine on both nose and palate. Initially more secondary, sous bois with deep dark fruits. Getting more expressive and sensual with air, freshen up. Powerful spiciness, sweet red fruits and herbs, autumn leaves.
- Fresh, very nice sweet rich fruits with growing intensity on the palate, silky ripe tannin, spicy after taste with umami complexity, lovely. A powerful wine with finesse. Similar to the nose, the palate is getting better shape, livelier with air too. More focus and precise, with the restraint and finesse that I always find in great burgundy, incredibly Long.

intense yet balanced. still very good ruby colour. I get a smoky root character, deep cherry and spices. very silky and seamless, exceptional mouth feel. Has a bit of the ripe 1990 character of many European 1990s, but in no way sweet or decadent as some can be. This feels like it can go for many more years to me.

Tasted at Tour d’Argent, this wine had a very deep red center and oranging rims. The high- intensity nose featured rhubarb, Griotte cherries, tan spices, and minerals.
In the mouth, this wine had deep intense fruit as well as firm tannin and acidity. It slowly became more friendly and rounded as it aired. However, it was still a bit firm after 3 hours but the trajectory was clear.
This bottle needed 6 hours in a decanter which it didn’t get. It was drinking at a 96 point level after 3 hours of air. Amazingly enough, the material here was so strong my guess was that it would improve with 10 more years in the cellar. While drinking with extended air, I see no reason to rush, and some reason to wait.

Bottle stored in a cold cellar from release. Poured on opening it was clearly mature, good fruit - classic and pure burgundy aromas (I can't improve on ambrosial beetroot), good even structure, though possibly a bit muted. Then it opened up and carried on opening up. And on. A really wonderful bottle in just the right place. A real joy to drink. My brother said complete (this was a birthday celebration) and it was.

After 4 hrs. OMG!! This opened up and became what everyone wants in a red burg. Expansive and complex. Nose was truffles, earth, red fruits, and some of the mint. Tannins were silky and integrated. The body even changes and was perceived as more medium body. More complex notes of mushrooms, soy sauce, red fruit, and green herbs emerged.
Interestingly, when I pulled the cork (with a Durand) the cork was obviously infected with TCA. I was pretty crushed as it was brought by a friend for his 70th and he was really was looking forward to this bottle (who wouldnt be, right?). When smelled and tasted, we got no indication of the TCA in the wine. I was still concerned cause sometimes it blooms in air. Even 5 hours later, no TCA smell and the wine was still showing really well. Was extremely unusual... but I'll take it.
Magnum Dinner for the Ages (and Aged)-Ponsot, Chave... (La Tour d'Argent, Paris): Magnum. Red with tawny outer third. My god, the most sinuous, complex Burgundy aromatics I've smelled in a long time-seductive red fruit, anise, and herbs. Big, round wine just filled with sap, natural sweetness, clove, and the most alluring feel. Solid acidity, understated soil, tremendous length. A very great wine that is at peak out of this format. I'm sure that the impeccable storage conditions played a large role as well. Superb, moving wine. In a nutshell, the reason we crave older Burgundy.

The first thing to mention is: The cork has a lenght of 5,5 cm. Therefore it is difficult to pull it out with a laguiole for example. Deep ruby with only a thin slightly orange rim. Complex nose of red and black fruits, minerals, earth, with more time terpenes and spices. On the palate the taste is carried by an intense acidity that provides freshness. There is still some tannin left. Out of the bottle it needs some minutes in a big glass to put on weight and the first impression of lightness or even thinness is inversed. Decantation is okay when this wine is drunk within, let's say an hour. Extended airing after decantation for more than this, is not recommended. The part I decanted was less complex after 2 hours than the part without decantation. In a cool cellar this will hold through and maybe shed more of its tannin for ten more years minimum.

Double the Blind Double the Pleasure: 1983-96 Grand Cru Burgundy: Served double blind and double decanted. What was immediately apparent to all was this pleasant menthol quality to the palate. The wine was a gorgeous clear ruby. A bit darker and maybe a hint more earth compared #3 but as equally elegant. Kent pulls out a note where some critic assigned this 70 points and declared 1990 Ponsot an epic failure. This wine and flight shows that could not be any further from the truth. Alan guessed this correctly as CDLR. I guess Chambertin because it was so classy and refined.

At a large dinner party tasted 4 1990 Grand Cru Burgandy's: Clos de La Roche Ponsolt, and 3 Louis Jadot's Chambertin, Rucholtes Chambertin, and Romanee Saint Vivant. They were all outstanding with nice fruit and a little spice - very complex, well balanced acid and tannin with a long finish. I gave 94's to the two Chambertin's and 95's to the other two.

Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red/purple center with red/orange rims. The high- intensity nose offered up blackberries, overripe cherries, anise, tan spices, and soil.
In the mouth, this was very ripe and rich with great fruit, acid, and rounded tannin. This tasted young, ripe, and was gorgeously balanced. It developed the classic peacock's tail finish.
While this was spectacular in my book, tasters should be forewarned that this wine does have a touch of that intense, over-ripe quality that most VV wines get. While it is drinking with extended air, this will easily last, and continue to evolve for two decades+.

A wow wine. Actually preferred this to same out of magnum last year, because in 750 it showed more development and secondary character and was not as ripe/fruity as so many of these 90s can be. Really a regal, deep, impressive wine, with rich earthy notes and superb black fruit.

Objectively this is an excellent wine: rich, powerful, dominated by very ripe black fruits, griottes, and great length. As one taster said, it tastes more like a Brunello than a Burgundy. Style is too ripe and extracted for my taste, but for those who like the style it would probably warrant a much higher score. I worry about the aging potential as a "hot" angle is emerging from the wine.

Dark colour, with hints of purple, amazing for a burgundy this age. A little cloudy/muddy looking. Volatile acidity, leather, dark fruits and earth on the nose. A dark-fruit dominated, very extracted wine. Medium-long finish. Definitely an experience, even though this is not my style of burgundy. You could say that stylistically this is like a cross between Cote de Nuits and Cote Rotie.

This followed the 1999 and was a step up in intensity and complexity, but not a huge one. It is an earthy wine with lots of forest floor notes, good saturation of the classic black Clos de la Roche fruit. Thank you Frank! (Commerce)

Mad for Magnums (Ai Fiori - New York NY): From magnum. Very ripe black fruit aromas with lots of spice as well. Similarly ultra ripe flavors give this a slightly off-center, top-heavy character. Very 1990 at its best and worst.

Farewell Dinner (Charlie Trotter's, Chicago IL): Lots of ripe black fruit and earth on the hugely powerful nose. Very dense dark spice as well. Richly textured palate, again, showing lots of dense, ripe black berry fruit, damp earth, and spice. Very good acidity. Long, powerful finish.

Farewell to a Great Restaurant (Charlie Trotter's - Chicago IL): Perhaps I didn't give this enough time tonight, and it was certainly tough to quickly assess this "middle aged" wine in context of so many well aged bottles of Burgundy. Dense, ultra-ripe black fruit aromas with lots of spice. Similar flavors, but i found this very bulky on the palate. This didn't show me much nuance or charm, but others appreciated this wine more than I did tonight.

Domaine Ponsot Dinner with Laurent Ponsot and Danny Haas @ Cityzen (Cityzen): Big scale wine, blueberry compote but mostly red fruit driven, cherry, asian spice, forest floor. Very ripe fruit but absolutely no hint of overripeness. Nice silky palate, excellent concentration. The wine opened up tremendously adding a lot of complexity. Still young and vibrant fruit with nice structure, will last for awhile. Started as a 96 point wine going up to 98 to 99. Always a pleasure.

WTF impromtu event (Wine Vault): Great bottle of wine. You can taste the heat from this vintage and probably somewhat atypical for the wine but Ponsot managed to keep it all under control. More than held its own today against 2 Jayer Cros P and 1 Jayer Ech. That about says it all. Will hold and get better! Definite upside. Hoping one day I can have this side by side with a Lignier CdR 90.

Dark red in color and pretty cloudy. Hints of stems but not over done, nose of cherries, beef jerky and very deep. But perhaps the palate got some catching up to do which is not as finely built as the Hubert Lignier right next to it, finish slightly edgy and alcoholic, should get better with more cellaring time, drank from 375ml.

Magnum Madness (New York, NY): Magnum. Big black fruit on nose and palate, along with lots of spice as well. Flavors came across more ripe than its aromas, but this was overall a very powerful 1990 (fairly common) but also incredibly balanced (much less common). Great textures and mouth feel.

Grand Cru Burgundy Blow-out at Troquet (Troquet, Boston): Restrained wine that opened slowly through the evening. Touches of mint, coffee, and leather on the slightly musty nose. Savory flavors that would match well with a meaty dish. Very pleasant wine with maybe a little hole in the mid-palate. Would be great on it's own but paled a bit next to the wines that followed.

1990 Burgundies (NYC): Dark red with a slight lightening on the rim. Tight nose. Soft, approachable tannins. Black fruits, licorice, iron. Terroir driven wine. Nicely extracted wine. I would personally let it age a bit more to perhaps let the nose open up.

Explosive fruit cocktail of red and black fruits held together perfectly by a superb structured frame. This wine still has ways to go. Very well kept bottle but you can see the potential in 10-20 years time!

Aromatically - mushroom, forest floor, spice..very elegant nose with lots of pedigree. On the palate a unctuously thick wine with layers and layers of flavor beautiful fine grain tannin. Must have been a monster in its youth.. great stuff

Blind tasting two Red Burgundy with Mike, first place, Bright beet red color in the glass, closed nose that opened very slowly throughout the evening which hurt its score, lovely, dark black cherry taste on the palate, sweeter fruit than its peer this evening, very earthy, slightly musty, tie broke based on the taste on the palate, medium/long finish.

A lovely wine, but a bit overshadowed by the 1988. The nose showed very ripe fruit, as did the palate. Delicious, although didn't quite have the structure of the '88.

Touch of spearmint and forest on the nose, very ripe, sweet fruit on the palate, lovely black cherry fruit taste, tasted lighter than the other wine, earthy over time on the finish, will last five more years. Blind tasting of two Red Burgundy with Mike. Second place.

1990 Burgundies (NYC): Dark red with a slight lightening on the rim. Tight nose. Soft, approachable tannins. Black fruits, licorice, iron. Terroir driven wine. Nicely extracted wine. I would personally let it age a bit more to perhaps let the nose open up.
