Drank with Echezeaux 2013 and Grands Echezeaux 2010 of the DRC. Great complexity and finesse on that nose, lots of layers of spices and the palate is also gorgeous, such finesse, yet intense and classy, impressive length. Despite the poor reputation of the 2004 vintage, such an amazing chance to drink such a rare wine.

  • This wine had a very deep red center with light red rims. The medium intensity took quite a while to develop. After a few hours it developed plums, violets, minerals, and some rhubarb.

In the mouth, this had a nice silky texture, light rounded tannin, and very good length.

This wine still seemed young and likely to improve with time. However, the QPR seems debatable.

  • Touch of creaminess aromatically that signaled Mugnier, but smells and tastes like 2004. Strong greenness on nose and palate. Polished and refined tannins.

  • During a La Paulee dinner, so no detailed tasting notes. Great, spicy wine, red fruit with clay, cloves, wonderful, no 2004 greenness whatsoever.

  • Montrachet and Musigny: Blind. Dark violet florals, chocolate, blood, black cherry and some redcurrant. Really composed on the palate, medium bodied fruit and excellent length that is stretched out by bright acidity. Doesn't show any of the 2004 green streak at the moment, a really successful showing for this wine.

  • Denne var som grønske i medisinskapet.
Langt svakere enn en flaske jeg hadde for et drøyt år siden.

Beautiful ruby. Sweet nose, cinnamon, blueberry, black currant, floral. Just incredible, So fresh and seductive! The savouriness, the sweeetnes, the finesse and elegance yet so much substance. Truly iron fist in the velvet glove. Fresh and great length. Truly captivating! Drinking at its peak and wil stay there for very long time. My WOTN

  • Musigny theme'd dinner at Summer Pavilion.

TBU - hard to pick a favourite between this and the 06 Vogue Musigny. Anyway, these 2 round up my top 3 wines of the night...

  • 2004 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Holland Park): Not up there with Mugnier's very best examples from Musigny, but this was nevertheless an absolutely lovely wine, and drinking wonderfully at the moment as well. The nose did feel slightly green and herby, more so than many of the other 2004s on show, but this was wrapped up in a full, generous bouquet of blueberries ringed with a beautiful perfume of lovely florals and whiffs of smokiness. It was such a powerful bouquet that I though the greener inflections added interest, rather than distracted from the whole. It was beautiful on the palate too - very Musigny in character I thought, absolutely complete and full, and wonderfully inetgrated, so that it felt like many complex notes - blueberries and spice and meat and earth - all wrapped up and melded into one solid beam of flavour that filled the mouth right from the attack and all the way into a super-long finish. In true Mugnier fashion though, this was always a wine of purity and grace in spite of its great depth and generosity, with a wonderful clarity glowing through its fruit expression. Tannins were soft and silky, but the wine was carried nicely by the fine acidity of the vinatge. Like the nose, there was a just a touch of something green here - capsicum I thought - but it was more or a subtle highlight around the egdes of the palate that reminded you of that this was from 2004, rather than a real distraction. All in all, a beautiful wine, drinking wonderfully now.

  • Poker night - Reds double blind - 91 Musar, 09 Coche Perrieres, 67 Marthas and etc.: Served blind by Paul. Strong note of stem, my guess is Dujac CDR from 2008. I tell Paul that he better not brought the 04. Strong stem but not obvious LBT. Subtle blackberry fruit, strong stem, black pepper and earth. Medium concentration, stem like dry note and medium finish. Not a bad wine but not worth the price.

  • No '04 mean green here, lovely floral aroma. Quite enjoyable, though it didn't have the miraculous precision and delineation that the best examples of Musigny possess. I rate this a very good wine, but only a middling Musigny.

  • Clearly a step-up from the '94... as good as the '06, with a beautiful nose of roses, berries, intermixed with dang-gui (a Chinese herb) which some may identify as a touch of greenness... Nice silky/cool palate, with red-dark berries and some mushrooms. A very, very enjoyable wine, considering that this was from the '04 vintage!

  • Freddy Mugnier dinner at Jade Palace. Very dark in appearance, in fact more opaque like as compared to the 2006. This too, was very similar in bouquet to the 2006, with a lovely rich and intense perfume from red roses and violets, with wild strawberries, grapefruit, blueberries and orange zest. This had a touch of green-ness, but nothing as sinsister at the Roumier Cras. This had more structure and power as compared to the 2006, with lots of red and blue fruit, strawberry jam, chocolate and coffee bean. Ironically, although this is an 04, I felt it improved greatly in the glass as compared to the rest of the wine this evening.

  • From magnum, this is not a big one but good enough to blow my mind. After 2 hours, the scent of beautiful Musigny shows up, the silky texture, medium-bodied with a soft landing, lovely long finish. 92-93/100

I love the style of Mugnier more than Roumier. (at this moment)

  • Medium red. Aggressively peppery, menthol aromatics right out of the bottle. Eventually, some red fruit rises. Medium weight. The pleasant fruit and hint of sap are swamped by harshness and the herbaceousness which was strongly reprised on the finish. Nowhere near Grand Cru quality, much less that of Musigny. The half full bottle was a heartbreaking sight as we left the table, but that was all we could manage.

  • Dry earth, tubereuse, strawberry. Light silky tannin. No greens despite vintage. Long finish. #wine

  • Tasted at the Gala dinner La Paulee NYC. Couldn't get past the green elements in the nose. Nice on the palate.

  • Had pulled 2 other Burgs but Jay had brought a Musigny so I thought I would see what we had that might be drinkable in that department. Settled on this to see where it was at. This would divide people along the lines that this vintage divides people. There's the green, semi-stemmy smelling, vegetative, herbal, green peppercorn streak on the nose and in the palate. Undeniably there but not in a truly disgusting level or manner. Under it there is a lot to like The fruit is compelling and it tastes youthful. There is complexity if not necessarily a lot of depth to the wine. Longer finish than most wines. Went well with the food as that seemed to help either work with or mask the green streak. All this being said it is hard to separate the price tag from the reality. 88 (just one the wine's merit, not on any sort of QPR)

  • After an incredible early morning of seven Dom Perignons in a technical tasting at the Post Hotel 2008 Wine Summit at Lake Louise in Alberta Canada, we had the distinct pleasure to enjoy eight beautiful Burgundys. Frederic Mugnier, General Manager at Domaine Jacques- Frederic Mugnier led us through this interesting tasting. Frederic was well prepared and knowledgeable though struggled with English. I can not criticize as I know fewer words in French than the number of languages he can speak. The 2004 Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Musigny was pleasant so I am guessing Hank (below) is correct again in assuming a bad bottle or dirty glass. The color had a bit of an orange cast to the purple. I got roses and leather on the nose. It was earthy like a merlot and it was thick and viscous. The leather carried over to the mouth. Having hung reins in my mouth occasionally on trail, you get good at picking that taste and it was leather, good leather. I liked it but it needs time.

  • Tasting Notes Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier (The Wine Summit At Lake Louise 2008): Paler ruby colour – not anywhere near as dark as the 2003; nose seemed muffled and it took some firm swirling to break out; unfortunately there was a distinct vegetal character to the aromas, and this covered over anything else; somewhat awkward on the palate – some heat on the back of the palate; have to strain to get any fruit; flavours have a sour character; finishes rather light.
There was obviously something wrong with the sample I tasted. Whether it was from an “off bottle” or whether the glass I had wasn’t cleaned properly, the wine was a disappointment.

  • A terrific bottle of wine and as one would expect, a standout from the vintage. Served side-by-side with the 2004 Mugnier Amoureuses which was a good pairing but the Musigny out-performed, as expected. This is definitely no 2005 in color and is lighter in color generally but noticeably darker than the Amoureuses and also lacks that very shallow brown tinge we detected on the Amoureuses. In the mouth, quite similar to the Amoureuses with a distinct and intriguing stemmy note that is pleasing to me and adds just the right complicating intensity. In the mouth, somewhat darker fruit oriented and up on the next level of mid-palate broadness and depth vis-a-vis its premier cru companion. With time in the glass, this wine continues to broaden out and improve. Noticeably longer finish than the Amoureuses with just a touch of the detection of very well rounded, and balanced tannins. I believe this will be longer lived than the Amoureuses and will probably peak in about 10 years.

  • Magnifique Pinot, association parfaite de densité et de suavité, arômes délicieux de fruits rouges, grande longueur. Un régal.

  • Mugnier Tasting at World of Pinot Noir (Shell Beach, CA): Mugnier tasting. Floral aromatics with lots of red fruit. Flavors of red cherry carry over from nose to palate with strawberry as well. Fruit, acid and tannins are already nicely balanced. Trace of green bitterness at the end. Probably needs a few more years but won't have the same longevity as most vintages of this wine.
