Corton Charlemagne and Rousseau Chambertin: Another great bottle of the 91 Chambertin. Great vintage, great producer, great vineyard - all coming together perfectly. Loved it. Not decanted in advance, opened at dinner then enjoyed over three hours.
Wedding Anniversary Celebration (Acquerello, San Francisco): Opened 2 hours earlier. Bricking light red color. Mostly menthol, but a bit of brettanomyces as well on the nose. Compared to the Mugnier Musigny in the same flight, lighter weight, more earthy, stalky feel despite no shortage of subtle red fruit and remaining sweetness. This has nowhere near the depth or length of that wine. Of course, some of this is the difference in appellations, but I much preferred it when it was 12 years younger. This was quite disappointing, and judging from this bottle, I have to believe that it is past its best.

The nose here is simply spellbinding in terms of detail, projection, and complexity. Light red fruit with a slight Gevrey rusticity and terroir. Initially the nose on both this and the Beze in the next glass are more or less interchangeable but this pulls away into a higher level of expressiveness, openness, and sense of place. Never wild or sous bois, just great earth influence. The palate is fully resolved and is effortlessly flavourful and textured, light and pure. Ethereal but still powerful. Incredible and could easily be the wine of the night, edging out ‘90 La Tâche. The more I think about that trip, the more this stands out as the one.

A wine much liked at the Domaine, this lived up to expectations. High fill. Flavors simply explode on the palate - expanding to all corners of the mouth. Earthy. Mixed red fruits. Some considerable power. A wine of forceful presence on the plate but also complexity and layered detail. Tremendous length. A wine of real vigor still. Everything in balance. Simply excellent. People more experienced with this wine over many vintages said this was an utterly memorable example of why this wine is so iconic in the panoply of fine Burgundy. A much maligned vintage. Will surely keep still a decade or two. Sadly my only bottle. Grey market import to the US. Peter Thurstrup capsule. Bought on release.
Grand cru class and fabulous complexity. Perhaps a bit young or just a touch subdued. Beautiful, layered, impossibly long finish, but still holding plenty of structure. Sensational but not seamless. A damn beautiful bottle that seemingly has plenty of life ahead of it. No sense of the fruit drying out or dropping off. I’d love to taste again in 10 years given the opportunity. Thank you, KB for sharing.

Incredible wine by any measure. That said, several bottles a few years ago were some of the absolute best bottles of wine I've ever had and I do wonder if possibly this has come off that peak a little bit. A little less perfect fruit, a little bit more earthiness. Could just be the bottle or the incredibly high bar I've set in my mind so hard to say for sure. In any case, fantastic to drink just not quite as thrilling as prior bottles.

Just about a perfect embodiment of what Chambertin should be - majestic purity of fruit, some rugged game notes, gorgeous tertiary loamy elements. Super long, super focused. Pretty extraordinary by any standard.

Brad E wrote about this crazy tasting where we had the Rousseau Chambertin and Clos de Beze from 90 and 91. I think we agree that all of the wines were extraordinary and that if you want a reliable epiphany experience with Burgundy, stick with Rousseau from great years with nearly 30 years of bottle age. Beyond that, choosing a favorite is really just splitting hairs. This one was my fave. In fact, on other occasions when I was fortunate enough to have a Beze and Chambertin from this producer side by side, my preference always lies with the richer, more voluminous Chambertin; others side with the elegance of the Beze. Both fabulous wines with just a slight terroir difference. If you prefer the Clos de Beze and want to give me your Chambertin, I'll gladly oblige, but either one is fine by me.

Magical 2x2 flights: 90 Chambertin, 90 Beze. 91 Chambertin, 91 Beze. A rare treat to have all four of these in one sitting. The 90 Chambertin was so pure, and so beautiful. Close to perfection. The 90 Beze was delicious, rich, and a great foil to the Chambertin. The 91 Chambertin was in any setting fantastic, but a touch shy of the perfect 90. Then the 91 Beze comes along, and is literally the sexiest wine on the planet on this night. So utterly lovely. What a perfect set of wines.

Holiday Burgundy Lunch - Rousseau, Leroy, DRC, Ramonet, d'Auvenay (Scottsdale, Arizona USA): Served blind. Wine of the night, amongst stiff competition from a lineup of Rousseau, DRC, and Leroy. This is as good as Burgundy gets, it's heavenly. Such precision and delineation, akin to a great Musigny, and also so clean. Light and long finish lasts forever. This is otherworldly. I am ever grateful to the friend who served this incredibly special bottle tonight.

Remarkable bottle of Pinot...drank next to a 91 Beze, which I very slightly preferred, though I may have been in the minority (or not). The depth and expressiveness was stunning, the wine combined great concentration with a savory element that was magical.

an exceptional night of wines and how they showed. Flight of 91 beze and chambertin next to each other was just outstanding. The nose on the Beze was pure perfection tonight and the best of had from this wine. I still found the chambertin the more powerful and pure wine. I ultimately think it will outlast and out shine the Beze though the Beze was the winner this night.

Second time having this in the past few months. Incredibly, from the same friend whose generosity knows no bounds. Consistent notes. This is a perfect wine. Lovely red and black fruits. Highly expressive nose, intricate, detailed, complex, but also gives up a wide array of scents in the earthy perfume. This was fresher and more youthful the the ‘85 in the next glass, which I actually preferred for its added tertiary earl grey and ripe blueberry detail, but this wine was near perfection in a pleasantly developed but impossibly fresh state. Beautiful. Benchmark stuff and I think even better than the last bottle.

Through the incredibly generosity of Bill J I was able to drink this incredible wine. Amazingly bright red fruit, a bowl of bright red cherries, red raspberries, some nuttiness. The nose comes aggressively out of the glass - no coaxing needed. This has everything - perfectly aged fruit, silky tannins, balance, complexity, depth, character, stuffing, finish and length. It simply doesnt get better than this. Thanks Bill.

Party at My Place: Sensational and intriguing nose right off the open. Cool, dark red and blue berry fruit, damp earth, damp leather, cool spice. The overall impression is youthful in that the developed and complex harmony of earth, fruit, and spice is incredibly fresh and pure. Some rusticity to the character, but overall this is a highly refined, elegant, and clean wine of immense beauty. Spend time with your nose in this and pick out all the details of toasted nuts and espresso. Very fine indeed.

Just an amazing night. Drank a flight of 91,93, and 99 and ended the night with a 2005 roumier Bonnes mares. The 91 stood out to me because of the complexity it showed. powerful while still being regal and subtle. the 99 is a bruiser that will need a ton of time imo. 2015 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/3/2015-11/9/2015 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): The nose is even more complex and hedonistic than the 91 CDB. Incredibly complex nose displaying decadent yet pure red fruits, candied cherry, candied raspberry, sous bois, sautéed porcini, cappuccino and mineral. Incredibly harmonious and perfectly balanced palate, pure, energetic and weightless, bright acidity and incredible long finish that ends with a decadent red fruit note. Essence of pinot, magical wine.

Served alongside the 85. They are neck and neck in quality imo...Probably give the nod to the 85 as it obviously is more mature. Very complex expressive nose of red fruits, some spice. Great structure. Just needs a bit more time and should approach the level of the 85.

A great wine, that's primary flaw was that it was flighted with a virtually perfect 1985. I've had the 91 a number of time, and while I'm a fan of the vintage overall, the Rousseau's sometime seem to slightly under-perform. Which for Rousseau means they are killer, not killer plus.

Celebration for Bud's Seventieth Birthday (Eketahuna, New Zealand): Gorgeous nose, dominated by beautiful floral top notes driven by well judged volatile acidity. On the palate, beautifully harmonious and silken mouthfeel that has clear new oak influence that is integrated. Lovely to drink and apparently one of the successes of the vintage, the wine is undoubtedly outstanding but lacks the requisite multi layered complexity to warrant a higher score - it just lacks a bit of complexity on the palate.

Wow! Sweet, grassy, a little smoky, with some animal notes and some herbs, and a hint of roasted corn. Very light, well-balanced and the epitome of elegance. This is a classic example of why some of us love Burgundies so much... Everything was just so nicely balanced and silky smooth. With all the sediment in my glass, a huge nose of toast came out. I bought this in Taipei over 10 years ago, together with the Chambertin Clos de Beze that I drank almost immediately.

Dramatically more backward than the '91 Beze tasted several months back. With hours in the glass, started to open up and became quite an intense, powerful. and even profound wine. Medium to light color. Smells like a really big wine with beautiful red fruit and soil, yet comes across as more supple with surprising delicacy. Continued to expand and become more airy over the time it was open. Wonderful Gevrey Grand Cru and a point now.

Nose began subtle and a bit flowery, with three hours of air was more of a chestnut, bacon fat and spice. Concentrated a complete wine with great structure and excellent length. I was hoping for slightly more magic in the nose and finish, which would have then bumped the score up to 96 or so.

Incredibly harmonious and perfectly balanced palate, pure, energetic and weightless, bright acidity and incredible long finish that ends with a decadent red fruit note. Essence of pinot, magical wine.

Accidental Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St Jacques Dinner (Quince - San Francisco CA): Fake bottle. Perfect looking bottle with an ever-so-slightly different looking capsule and obviously not a Rousseau cork. Auction house will get an earful. Tasted like a good 2006 Marsannay.

Good complexity to the nose and palate but maybe it was overshadowed by the wine from the previous course but it did not meet expectations.

There was not consensus on this bottle. Some of us thought it was good, if not outstanding, others detected an off note that they couldn't get past.

Now this is a real chambertin! Dark, young, seriously deep and meaty. Quite different to the 96 but equally enthralling.

Great wine, that blew away the 91 Rousseau Beze drunk side by side. Still a lot of development left, don't be in a hurry to drink these.

Had at a friends house in from his cellar. A balanced, smooth, flawless wine. harmony in a glass - subtle complexity to start that evolved as time passed. Left some in the glass and was even better by the end of the evening.

A wonderful Rousseau. Beautiful balance and structure. Still has some life in it yet but no regrets about drinking it when we did.

Utterly glorious wine, perfect balance and finish. The ultimate expression of power without weight, this is the epitome of great Burgundy. It's difficult to describe in words, and I don't want to because that would only ruin it -- this must be experienced. My highest recommendation, a flawless, brilliant wine. A++

Lovely aroma profile with cherry, florality, light spice and light smoke. Very youthful on the palate, beautiful acid structure and wonderful flavour intensity. A brilliant wine that has plenty of improvement left.

Dramatically more backward than the '91 Beze tasted several months back. With hours in the glass, started to open up and became quite an intense, powerful. and even profound wine. Yet I still think I only got a hint of what is to come. Stick to the Beze for now, give this at least another 3 years. Someday, this will be an absolute classic.

Burgundy Gems in Oregon (Southern Oregon): Nose was first a bit musty, even earthy, but became more smoky and floral after 60-90 minutes. Black fruit with lots of acidity, great balance. Mostly primary, but some forest floor character kept appearing and disappearing over the course of dinner. Tannins were quite nicely integrated. Balanced in every way. Powerful muscular finish.

Alinea for Elena's Birthday (Chicago, IL): Serious earthy-mushroom funk on the nose. Good colour, tending to dark. More funk on the palate, blackberry fruit and earth and compost on the finish. A power core as it opened up, but still struggled to pull itself up. Never came around to what it should.
