A nose of some muted fruit and spice, medium garnet in color. A medium bodied red, with black cherry, raspberry, herbs and spice on finish, a foodie wine. www.winelx.com

This took some time to open up - about two hours - but when it did it was terrific. Tannins had smoothed out, giving way to spices, herbs, and a pleasant fruitiness. Nose of all-spice, pipe tobacco, carrion, and dried forest berries. Reminded me of a Pinot Noir, as I guess it should. Seemed to be at its height - you can sit on it, but it won't get better, in my view.

Transparent dusty rose in color. Medium clear rim. Strong floral components on the nose. Strawberries on the front, moving to strong acidity and slight bitterness toward the back. Better with food than by itself. Have had good success in the past pairing this wine with cheeses-- maybe that would help increase enjoyment. Seems to be on the far side of its drinking window.

Tasted in a vertical of Travaglini Gattinara 2006-2010.
Clear, translucent cherry red color with a developed, slightly bricking hue towards the rim. The nose is quite reticent, especially if compared to the other vintages tasted. Although the nose might lack intensity, depth and typicity it doesn't; there are notes of cherry, sweeter cherry marmalade, some meaty notes, a little tar, a hint of ripe plums and a touch of salty licorice powder. On the palate the wine is obviously a classic, linear example of Gattinara Spanna: it has medium body, moderately high acidity and very pronounced, grippy tannins. There are flavors of both sweeter red cherry and more bitter sour cherry, some tart red berries, a little ripe raspberry and a hint of smoky earth. Despite its 8 years of age, the wine feels very structure-driven and tightly knit - although the rich, ripe fruit serves as a perfect counterweight to the stern structure. The finish is lighter than the midpalate, yet showing lovely length and intensity with flavors of peppery spice, sour cherry, some tart red currant notes, a little lingonberry and a hint of gravelly minerality. The aftertaste is quite grippy, bitter and astringent due to the tannins.
This is a thoroughly delightful, classic example of a good vintage Spanna from Gattinara - a true song of praise for Nebbiolo! It shows great structure and varietally pure flavors with good harmony and without any excessive ripeness. First and foremost this is a food wine, although by cellaring it long enough it might turn out to be a lovely wine on its own as well. Shows great potential for prolonged aging - I wouldn't be surprised if the wine showed wonderfully even after 30-40 years! Good value at 21,90€.

Popped and poured at a restaurant. Needed an hour to show well, but acidity was very much to the forefront giving it a slight tartness and shrill palate with fruit in the background. Lots of structure probably just needing some time. Went well with food though. Good.

This is a gorgeous glass of Gattinara, showing radiant red Nebbiolo fruit with roses, dry spice, tobacco, floral undergrowth and earth. On the palate, silky textures were complicated by brisk veins of acidity, with flavors of tart cherry, plum, dried spice and fine tannin saturating the senses. Balsamic tones and dried cherry lingered long on the finish along with a hint of tannin.

Garnet, medium intensity, with some fading on the rim. The nose is developed, with organic aromas of tobacco, leather, old wood and medicinal herbs. The palate is dry, with medium acidity, medium (+) tannins. The alcohol is medium at 13.5%. Fairly thin and astringent, and lacking in fruit. This did not do much for me at all.

Drinkable but that's about it.. Stemmy/green pepper nose. Some basic nebbiolo flavors but light, and kinda boring. relatively cheap but not sure i'll buy again.

Distinctive, asymmetric traditional bottle. Seems like I liked this more than some other tasters here. This is a well-crafted wine from the Alto Piemonte with an elegant lighter style, nicely suited to compliment an array of medium bodied dishes. Translucent red, with attractive tones of bright red fruit, earth and well balanced acidity. If you have an urge for a solid, easy drinking Nebbiolo, it's not a bad grocery store buy for $21.

Very nice wine. Pretty typical Nebbiolo flavor profile, not overly complex but hits all the right notes. Had more power and tannic heft than expected.. a definite step up from the entry level Nebbiolo d'Albas.

Launceston Place (South Kensigton, London): More concentrated and weightier than I expected, with a tar & leather motif outweighing any floral aspects. Not sure this will evolve much -- what you see is what you get.

Nose: Aromatic and high-toned with red fruits, cherries, tar, leather, and earth notes. There is medium depth with excellent balance.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The feel is on the prettier side with red fruits, earth notes, leather, cherries, and floral tones.
Overall: This is a pretty young Travaglini. There is a softness to the palate that makes it very drinkable right now, but this certainly can age. This could use some more depth, but, it is well worth drinking and is very well balanced and aromatic.

Nice color. Ripe aromas of red fruits, leather, flowers, and earth with a hint of spice. This is medium bodied with good concentration and good class. The medium plus length finish shows high acidity and fairly civilised tannins. Forward.

Nice experience, but tough QPR - 32$ CAN in MB. The last few notes are similar to mine...Nose is a little musty/earthy with some mushroom/smoke. Palate is tart with acid, but lighter coating tannin. Fruit is lightly smoked and tart sour cherry/blackberry/currant wrapped into one. Med bodied at best. Not sure if this/how this will improve over time...give it a go.

Light red. Aromas of mushroom, leather and dried fruits. Quite intense and tart in the mouth. Distinct tannins, maybe too distinct at the moment. But, this wine will definitely last a decade or more.

The Dirty Dozen Tasting 2013 (Il Botaccio, London): Tobacco and slightly dusty fruit on the nose. Dark fruit with a touch of spice on the palate. Very dense and chewy just now but should eventually come good. 16.5/20. 2016+
